Saint Michael theArchangel, Whittingtonis one of the four parish churches working together inthe the united benefice of Whittington, Arkholme,Gressingham and Hornby. It has been a holy placefor worship and prayer for over 800 years. It celebrates its Harvest and Patronal Festivalweekend at the end of September.A new updated Visitors Guide has just beenpublished. There are copies at the back of church. The church is usually open during daylight hours.

‘Michaelmas’ weekendSaint Michael’s day falls on 29 September. We celebrate it on thelast Sunday of September each year (Sunday 27 September thisyear), when all four churches gather in Whittington at 10.30am tocelebrate Michaelmas weekend (pronounced ‘Mikkel’, then ‘-mas’like the ‘-mas’ in ‘Christmas’). Whittington also makes Michaelmasits Harvest Festival weekend.Saint Michael is celebrated as the protector of God’s people andthe defender of justice. He is most often depicted with sword andshield defeating the devil. He also carries the scales of justice, representing not only the wisdom of justice but also the perfectbalance of God’s justice and God’s mercy.

Arkholme and District WITricia Berry made a return visit as speaker for the July meeting, back in Arkholme Village Hall. She related a day in the life of aFirst Responder – quite a contrast with her last visit, a cookerydemonstration!

Tricia belongs to the Endmoor team and is on 24 hour call to the ambulance service. First responders are trained by the Ambulance Service to give basic life support to patients until the paramedics arrive. Tricia brought a lot of kit, all of which is paid for with funds raised by the local group. Endmoor, like several other areas, has raised funds to put defibrillators in village halls and other local buildings. The defibrillator machine is a vital piece of equipment which can stabilise a failing heartbeat; the machine monitors the patient and instructs (Really! It talks to you!) the user how to proceed – amazing!

Tricia demonstrated CPR on her faithful dummy and encouraged everybody to get training in the basic technique. She was enthusiastic about proposals to have the technique taught in schools.

We are all indebted to volunteers, like Tricia, who give their time and effort to provide this service to their communities.

After some discussion about the decision to cancel the Group Meeting due to lack of participants it was decided that we invite our neighbours’ thoughts about future meetings. Our centenary boat trip and tea is confirmed, with a dozen members looking forward to visiting Skipton and a super tea at Coniston Cold. Our entry to the County Show in September is well in hand. Members were reminded of the Pre Show Dinner and that reduced-price advance tickets are available. News from the National Federation: Janice Langley was re-elected as National Chairman after the AGM. The next AGM will be in Brighton on 11 June 2016.

We meet next on Monday 14 September in Arkholme Village Hall at 7.30pm and, as usual, visitors are welcome. The speaker will be David Mower from Leighton Moss RSPB Reserve. The WI meets regularly on the second Monday of each month (except August) . For details please ring 21303 or 71818. New members are always welcome.

Arkholme DefibrillatorLast November the Jumble Sale organised by Karen Charlesworth andher team of helpers raised over £1200 to purchase a Defibrillator forthe village. The Village Hall Trustees have decided to purchase aHeartsafe defibrillator. It will be sited at the Village Hall and will beaccessible for all.

Even though it is a foolproof machine it would be best if as manypeople as possible were trained to use it. If you are interested in beingtrained or even in joining a team of First Responders in the villageplease email [email protected]. We look forward to hearing fromyou.

The weather in ArkholmeRobin McIlveen

June 2015 July 2015Rain days 14 23

Decidedly Wet Days (5mm+) 1 5Wettest Day 1st-2nd 16.6mm 27th-28th 18.1mm

Monthly total 34.1mm (1.3”) 79mm (3.1”)2015 total to end of month 585mm (23.0”) 664mm (26.1”)

JuneMuch to my surprise my wistful hope for a dry June was fulfilled! Only 10 months in my 156 months of readings in the garden were drier than June’s 34mm. There were just 14 rain days (compared with the usual 20), and the single day with 5mm or more (the wettest day of course) gave nearly half the month’s rain. Despite this, temperatures exceeded 20°C on only 5 afternoons, though the last of these (June 30th) reached 28.5°C (83.3°F). Apart from this, the month was dry but strangely cool.

JulyJuly rainfall was close to the long term average of about 80mm, but since 65% of this fell on the 5 wettest days, many of the other 18 Rain Days were only slightly wet. Though there were only 8 completely dry days there was enough sun to prevent the ground from becoming soggy. The afternoon of July 1st reached 29°C (84.2°F – likely to be our hottest day of the year), and the next 4 afternoons exceeded 20°C a little, but then afternoon temperatures slumped to disappointing levels for the holidays.

August so far has had 39.3mm of rain with only 3 dry days out of 19, and only 2 afternoons reaching 20°C. All in all it has been a typically mixed bag of a summer, with not too much to blame or praise.

Gerald writes...Seventy years ago as an almost 10 year old at Arkholme School I recall the great reliefand celebrations when the war against Japan ended. We all thought that was the end ofwars but it was not to be and countries are still fighting over disputed territory all over the world. What a pity the United Nations organisation isn't capable or strong enough to put a stop to all these conflicts.

I am told that the planning application for the Solar Energy Farm on Sadler Nook Lanehas been submitted to the City Council Planning Department. I understand that Whittington, Hutton Roof and Kirkby Lonsdale Parish Councils have been offered money if the plans are passed. At the moment the offer is verbal rather than in writing so the amount may not be guaranteed. If there are any objections to this planning application they must be at the Planning Office well before the end of August.

Dennis Westmorland is back playing his special brand of Lakeland music on Saturday5 September in Whittington Village Hall on behalf of Lupton Church. It will be a great night of music and song plus a very tasty supper during the interval.

Arkholme Parish Council met on Monday 29 June in Arkholme Village Hall. Appeals relating to the proposed wind turbine at Sunny Bank Farm continue through the planning system (details accessible online). Planning permission limits on permitted site working hours apparently do not apply to site deliveries. The rejection of the parishcouncil’s application to have the Bay Horse (and bowling green) declared a public assetwill be investigated with a view to an appeal. A blocked culvert near the village hall, a streetlight (F2) with its electric panel open, and flooding on the B6254 near The Nissan Hut, had all been reported and were being investigated. Recent outpayments included clerk's wages and PAYE, the rebuilding of part of the pound wall (£150), and insurance (£505). Two vacancies on the parish council remain to be filled by cooption. Present were Charles Waddington, Graham Jackson-Pitt, David Howarth, Roger Mace, two members of the public and the Clerk Gillian Hodgson. Next meeting Monday 7 September at 7.30pm in Arkholme Village Hall.

Whittington B4RN updateThe Whittington team continues to make good progress installing B4RN’s superfast fibre-optic broad band network around our parish.

On 8 August the team held a barbeque at the Village Hall to celebrate the fact that it had been exactly one year since the first sod was cut at the south end of the village. The event was attended by some 40 village residents, friends, visitors from other parishes and representatives from B4RN. To mark the occasion, Phyllis Pinch made an exceedingly impressive ‘birthday’ cake – an almost ‘to scale’ model of the village covered in green icing and decorated with a miniature digger and coils of orange ducting!

After a very productive early summer, we are now preparing to extend the route down the north side of Church Street. As we move towards properties on this side of the village any help from residents, even on an occasional basis, would be very much appreciated. The jobs needed for the completion of the project are various: from assisting with digging to collecting materials from the B4RN depot, from measuring out ducting to making tea and cakes. If you can help in anyway, please make contact with any member of the Whittington B4RN team – we are out and about every Saturday. Youwould be made most welcome and it’s a great way of getting to know friends and neighbours better.

Arkholme School – new classroomOn Friday 17 July we were delighted to hold the officialopening of our new Early Years classroom. Generatingextra space in school and creating a purposeful learningenvironment for all our children has been a priority forsome time, it is therefore very rewarding to see the hardwork of many people come together at last. The building was completed at the end of May and sincethen we have been working very hard to create an ideallearning space both indoors and out. A huge thank you toall members of our school community who came along to our two ‘Dig it, build it, fix it’ days, giving freely of their time and resources and to all the staff who have been working hard since, to make sure everything is ready for September. Our new classroom is a real testament to the strength and support of the community, who enabled our dream to become a reality for the children of today and the years ahead. We celebrated our opening with musical performances from the School Band and singing from the children in Key Stage 2. Mr Peter Elton, Chair of Governors, cut the ribbon and welcomed everybody to look around before enjoying refreshments in the playground. If you would like to visit our new classroom, please contact the school office on 21418. - Joy Ingram (Headteacher)
