6TH TO 7TH GRADE CAN BE A BIG CHANGE. WE WANT OUR 7TH GRADERS TO BE INDEPENDENT THINKERS AND PROBLEM SOLVERS.
A LITTLE ABOUT MYSELF I am originally from Ankeny,
Iowa and moved to Arizona 9 years ago.
I graduated from the University of Iowa and recently from NAU with my masters.
I have a son named Wyatt who’s turning three in September and a daughter named Penelope who’s almost 4 months.
We have a tortoise shelled cat named Cookie.
BACKGROUND
This is my 9th year teaching and 7th year teaching 7th grade Language Arts.
I am extremely excited to continue teaching at Altadena and getting to know your kiddo.
I am thrilled to be able to share all the fantastic short stories and trade books this year as well as strengthen their writing.
SUPPLIES
Composition notebook (~need 1 per semester)
pencils Red pen Loose leaf paper Expo marker Old clean sock Colored pencils
NOTEBOOKS
All assignments and assessments will be in their composition notebooks. -easy to see all their assignments and their
improvement over the semester.
Divided into different sections(reading, writing, vocab,) We will do this in class.
Any other assignments will be taped or glued into their notebook.
At any time you want to see what they’re doing in class, you will be able to look through their notebook and see all of their assignments done throughout the quarter.
THE FIVE ARTS OF LANGUAGE
Reading (tradebooks, short stories, poetry, other student’s writing)
Writing (1 big writing assignment a quarter) Listening Speaking Grammar (conventions)
SCOPE MAGAZINE
Scholastic Magazine is geared towards 6-8th graders and has nonfiction articles of high interest targeted towards middle school students.
Aligned to common core standards for reading and writing.
Students will be able to practice summary writing with these articles as well as be up to date on different things going on around the world.

SPELLING AND VOCAB
Spelling and vocab will be coming from the student’s trade book.
Spelling will also come from the Spalding Spelling rules.
AELA SPELLING
Students will take ~4 classical roots quizzes a quarter in addition to spelling from their trade book.
ABSENT
Students have two days for each day they are absent to make-up work.
It is the students responsibility to go online and check for work and assignments that they have missed. If they miss notes, they can get them from a friend or myself.
GRADES
Grades will be updated weekly. Please be sure to check on a regular basis.
80% assessments
20% homework/classwork
HOMEWORK Homework may be given up to 2-3 times a week. (spelling, vocab,
finishing an assignment, reading assignment)
Students will be given a Holt Literature book and a Language book that they will check out through the library and that will be kept at home.
Homework needs to be turned in on time. If there is a family emergency or circumstance where it can’t be completed, please email me or send a note with your kiddo.
Students will be expected to communicate with their parent if their homework isn’t completed with a note and a parents signature. They have two days to return the note. After two days the student will be given lunch detention.
The assignment can still be turned in for half credit within the following two days.
AC-LAB
Greek and Latin roots will be taken place in Academic Lab this year. Whichever core period your student has Language Arts, that will be the quarter that they have Language Arts for Ac-Lab. Additionally, homework and tests will be assigned a grade in Academic Lab

READING OPTIONS
Students enjoyed bringing their Kindle, Nook, etc to read the trade book we’re reading in class. It allows students to take notes, highlight, etc.
Students also brought in their own copy from the library or personal copy to take notes and be able to take home.
ELA-Will be able to check out the book at the end of the day if they need to catch up.
COMMON CORE STANDARDS
-alignment of standards among the states -focuses on college readiness standards -increases our expectations -higher text complexity -more non-fiction text -textual based evidence to support answers -gone are the days of guessing: students now
have to explain how they came to their answer in all subject areas
HIGHER ORDER THINKING VS. LOWER LEVEL THINKING
Higher level thinking cues (common core standards)
Make inferences about the theme or author’s purpose.
Analyze an essay. Cite evidence and
develop a logical argument for concepts.
Lower level thinking cues
Identify or describe characters, setting, plot, problem, solution.
