Two Best Practices of the Institutions
1. Character Building.
2. Organisation of Literary and Science Exhibitions
a) Title of the Practice: Character Building.
b) Objectives:
To enoble the students with good value system.
To chisel and mould the students into a well-rounded personality.
To aid them with opportunities in transforming themselves into socially responsible
citizens.
C) The Context:
The institution treasures a rich heritage of more than half a century and its tradition and glory
entices throngs of womenfolk near and far. Most of the Freshers admitted into the first year stream of the
College need a strong impetus for a righteous way of living. The late adolescent stage of the students also
strands them at cross roads. Moreover the impact of media and the increased use of technological gadgets
has also digressed the students‟ minds on unwanted disgusting subjects. The students need to be educated
and trained to discern right from wrong by using their free will. An awareness has to be created in them
to lead a value-based life.
Hence, the institution is shouldered with a responsibility to direct the students towards the
right path and channelize their potentials in appropriate ways that would brighten their future. In this
regard, it becomes mandatory to offer specific Courses and Programmes in order to inculcate good
practices amongst the students.
D) The Practice:
A compulsory paper on Value- Education under part-IV is offered to the UG students
in their VI Semester. A need-based syllabus is designed by a team of our learned
faculty. The committee assigned for this purpose compiles a book as well and
prescribes it for the final year students. One hour per week is allotted for this paper
which is utilised to impart good values to the students. A written examination is
conducted and marks are awarded.
Certificate Course on “Gandhian Thought” enrols interested students and thereby
they are enlightened with ideal thoughts and practices through the life history of
Mahatma Gandhi.
Realising the importance of Yoga, irrespective of its religious foundation, a diploma
on “Yoga, Meditation and Holistic Health” is offered as an Add-on course before
and after the regular working hours. The students practice the art of Yoga
48
strengthening their physical and mental well-being. A methodical training in
Meditation is also given through an efficient master. The holistic health of the
students is administered with Yoga and Meditation.
The Tutor-ward System enables the students to resort to the advice and guidance
provided by the respective tutors. During the Ward Meeting, cleanliness, discipline
in and off campus are emphasised.
The Counselling Forum functioning in every department redeems the grievances of
the individual students and also mentors them with feasible solutions after
considering their family situation and academic performance.
A Personality Development Programme is organised for the freshers every year to
initiate them into the flow of the institutional practices and orient them towards life
skills. These Programmes are conducted by competent Human Resource Trainers and
therefore the Programmes serve as eye openers for the freshers that they begin to
value moral ethics.
A daily prayer is conducted through the Central Announcement System. The students
observe silence in their respective classes and then utter the Universal Prayer. The
Prayer kick-starts every day with sanctity, instilling a sense of austerity and serenity
in the minds of the faculty and the students prayer purifies the thoughts and ennobles
the minds.
The NSS. RRC, YRS, SSL, of the College motivate the students to do self -less
service. The volunteers of these forums organise Blood Donation Camps, donate
blood, visit Orphanages, Rehabilitation Centres and Old Age Home to contribute
their service physically, financially and psychologically.
E) Evidence of Success:
Discipline has become a regular feature of the College that it is one of the prime
reasons for the college‟s popularity all over the state. There is an augment of students‟
strength every year. The number of applications received surmounts to a great extent every
year. During the Parent Teachers‟ meet the parents proudly acknowledge the virtues upheld
by the college during the Parent -Teachers‟ meet. The parents express their utmost
satisfaction in the overall functioning of the College and the emphasis laid on students‟
individual discipline in particular. Similarly the hostel strength has increased year after year
reiterating the discipline factor prevalent in the College. On the whole, the college has been
serving as a sanctuary where students stay, enjoy, equip and also edify themselves into better
individuals.
F) Please identify the problems encountered and resources required to implement the practice.
Problems Encountered:
The students of the Undergraduate Courses are in a transition period----- from
silly adolescence into mature adults. The psyche of these students is highly vulnerable that
they tend to go astray unless proper monitoring is done. The students need to be under
49
constant, close watch in order to avoid any kind of mishap. At the same time the students and
these issues are equally sensitive and so this warrants a confidential and careful dealing of the
problems.
Resources Required:
More number of Personality Development Programmes shall be conducted to
strengthen the integrity of the students. Professional Counsellors may be appointed permanently so that
students will come forward to discuss their personal problems frankly and come out with successful
solutions.
i)Title of the Practice: Organisation of Literary and Science Exhibitions.
ii)Objectives:
To enable the students comprehend what they learn.
To inculcate an artistic sense in the students
To broaden the outlook of the students
To facilitate application –oriented learning
iii)The context:
In the present scenario there is a dire need for the students to comprehend
whatever knowledge they acquire. A mere accumulation of facts is not enough for them to
compete in the ever-changing world. The students need to be trained to think beyond their
books. They must be in a position to apply whatever they learn in appropriate contexts. In
order to achieve an in-depth study of their subject a three –dimensional display of the facts
that they learn will be more helpful.
The advent of computer in the process of teaching and learning paves way for a
practical approach to their subject. Hence, the students of our College organise Exhibitions
regularly to accomplish wholesomeness in the learning process.
ii)The Practice:
On the occasion of the 50th year celebration of our College a grand Exhibition was
arranged in all Arts and Science Departments of the College. The students of our
College and also from the schools in the neighbourhood were provided with an
opportunity to visit the Exhibition and update their knowledge.
An exhibition on environment and medicinal Botany was organized by the Eco Club
and department of Botany of our College during this academic year. Real and bottle
specimens of medicinal plants were displayed. Pond ecosystem, biogeochemical
cycle, nitrogen cycle, natural resources such as water, food and forest resources, rain
water harvesting system, environmental pollution were explained by the students.
The students of B.Sc Computer Science developed quiz program, games, puzzles
using visual basic presentations and application programs on periodic table were also
done by the students for the school children.

The coins of 147 countries from ancient to the contemporary period were displayed
in the Historical Museum. “History makes men wise”- so many models of
monuments besides exhibits, highlighting ancient, medieval and modern history of
India were of great feast to the eyes. A film show on “All India cultural tours”
undertaken by the department of History was the highlight of the History Exhibition.
The department of Commerce exhibited articles related to art from waste, doll
making and homemade chocolates.
The department of Biochemistry mainly focused on food adulterations and
environmental issues. The highlight of the Biochemistry exhibition was the wine
preparation done by III B.Sc students by Microbial fermentation method. Wine was
served to everybody.
Literary exhibitions are organized by the department of English almost every year.
The objective of the exhibition is to bring visual delights to the students through their
creative talents and also to bring to reality what they read and imagine in Literature.
The students presented scenes from Shakespeare‟s play such as Macbeth, The
Tempest and The Merchant of Venice. They brought before the minds‟ eye the
grand and spectacular scene of Rossetti‟s “The Blessed Damzel” and the pleasant
and cool natural scenery of Wordsworth‟s “Tintern Abbey.
Plant Biotechnology, Muhroom technology, Animal Biotechnology and Genetic
Engineering Exhibits in the Biotechnology Department attracted a big crowd. The
Transgenic shop was very much informative.
The Principles of mechanics, energy, electricity, electronics and space Science were
well explained to the School and College students through the Physics Exhibition
.Learning by seeing and learning by doing make deep impressions in the young
minds.
The department of Mathematics displayed the Xerox copies of the great
mathematician Raman jam‟s original notes for the students to visualize them. Both
School and College students had a thrilling opportunity to view them. The
koringsberg bridge problem model and abstract of O.R. model were constructed.
Puzzle corner was also an interesting feature of the exhibitions.
A model of rice mill, ATM counter, Multi level marketing of products and their
advertisement, brand awareness were the exhibits of MBA and BBA departments.
The department of Tamil had displayed the different five types of cultures of
Tamilnadu like kurinji, mullai, marudham, neidhal and palai and their geographical
natures, their food pattern and their arts. The Tamil poems explaining some
important mathematical theorems like Pythagoras theorem, thousands of years before
were put up on charts.

Evidence of Success:
When the children from High Schools and Higher Secondary Schools visited the show, the
exposure they got was amazing. Interaction of the school students with our students and staff members
was very interesting. The exhibits helped the visitors to broaden their knowledge is the areas of Physics,
Chemistry Biochemistry and Biological Sciences. The exhibits laid emphasis on practical applications.
By seeing the exhibits the school children and the parents comprehended scientific ideas beyond the text
books. They were able to understand global issues social interactions and historical facts.
The exhibits representing the Shakespearean dramas, established in their minds, the art of
drama. The saw the characters, events and the social life through the picturesque settings, through the
scene display the visitors were able to acquire language skill, vocabulary and imagination. It prompted
them to choose their area of studies during their higher education.
The museum organised by the History department had provided a fascinating experience to
the visitors. They were able to differentiate among Chola, Pallava and Pandia periods. They identified the
art, culture and social life of the various dynasties. The exhibits made the students know mach out of their
text book reading .They were encouraged to be confident and to be empathetic, good citizens. They
understood the importance of computers in learning science subjects. The experiments presented to them
led them to understand the concepts.
Problems Encountered:
Organisation of Exhibitions involves a lot of finance. Good instruments and other required
materials need to be supplied to the students. The laboratories need to be replenished with chemicals,
glassware and other things after the conduct of the exhibition. Spacious halls with good lighting facility
will enhance the displays in the exhibition. The conveyance arranged for the visit of the school students
demanded heavy cost.
Resources Required:
It is felt that it would be better to have ultra modern spacious exhibition hall with in the
college campus to house the science, historical and literary exhibits and to accommodate one computer
centre. Visitors would rejoice their visit to the college for this purpose when proper conveyance is
arranged and due hospitality is shown towards them. Hence funds may be granted for conducting
exhibitions.
