Wanderers Preview Passion. Skill. Intensity. Controversy. Four words that probably wont be used to describe the Cap 12 derby match at KP.

The team are fizzing to play on the hallowed turf that is the Clubs home. Theres a pleasant mood in the Wanderers

camp, but for the fiery number 1 between the sticks who dons the purple jersey. Wanderers keeper Grant Tinkywinky

Rewi warns Unibrow strikers to prepare for a shoulder to the chest. "Show no quarter; take no prisoners" he said, before

adding "You play to win the game". Star and mentally-challenged left midfielder Chris Pom Hookham chipped in too:

The team showed great character - Brendan Rodgers. Clearly a misunderstanding of the brief to provide a pre-match

soundbite. Chat aside the team are looking forward to the match and several cold ones at the clubrooms afterwards. Itll

be a tough act for the Firsts to follow.

Brow Preview The 'Brow come into the 2015 Uni derby against the Wanderers bright eyed and full of hope, yet amid a season punctu-

ated by struggle and strife. More than a few moments of the spectacular have graced the pitch, although one or two may

have been spectacular in the wrong direction. Nevertheless, the lads have played valiantly to the final whistle every

game, and are always appreciative of the flavour of the unknown and unbelievable, often brought to the weekend by

Wellington's exceedingly variable pitch conditions. To their credit, the boys never fail to enjoy the beautiful game

each Saturday.. or Tuesday.. or Wednesday.. (and seemingly every available public holiday), ready to strap on the

boots, and the knee braces, to trot around the ground clutching at the glory days of the golden past for another week. All

    Mens First Team Match Report

Capital Premier League Match Report: Victo-

ria University 1-2 (1-1) Kapiti Coast United

    Kelburn Park (2.30pm kick-off) Saturday

    June 20, 2015

A physical and committed Kapiti Coast United ul-

timately out-battled University to earn a come-from-behind win on a heavy Kelburn Park.

KCU applied the early pressure before Univer-

sity left-midfielder Jared McMillan delivered his sides first cross into the opposition penalty area and was then bundled over amidst strong penalty

claims after being slipped into the box by striker

Yannik Wouts. Half-breaks were going uncompleted by either

side in a scrappy affair, with University keeper

Matt Walker also needing to deal with an early corner and right-midfielder Matt Ryan penetrat-

ing with a cross at the other end of the park.

Midway through the half a KCU player in space skewed a shot as the ball presented on the

edge of the University area and then the entire

home team defence was called upon to repel re-

peated shooting attempts from the visiting side. As the match evened up, a University break

was instantly countered with right-back Ben

McLean making a timely interception and soon after central-defender Si Davies also made a key

tackle, while industry from Wouts saw a danger-

ous ball played in from the right of the KCU box and left-back Finn Stenner-Corbishley fired a de-

    flected shot on target.

However, it was University which took the lead on the half-hour mark. Central-midfielder

    Mike Garnett worked a one-two off a throw-in

deep on the right wing and his cross was well

contested at the far post by McMillan with the ball appearing to ultimately rebound from the

KCU keeper, off his chest and over the goal-line.

University came close to extending its lead almost immediately when a Wouts back-heel re-

leased fellow striker Seb Ninness but his close-

range effort found the keeper and, following build up play by central-midfielder Peter Grierson, an-

other Ninness strike from the right curled just

wide of the far post. KCU rallied and, soon after McLean headed

away a dangerous left-wing cross, the visiting

team equalised when a right-wing corner cleared

to the left-edge of the box by Grierson was re-turned back across goal where a KCU player was

on hand to nod home on 38 minutes.

University dealt with a period of pressure that saw several defenders clear their lines and Walk-

er absorb a firm strike, before Ninness caused a

mini-scramble at the other end of the park with a right-wing corner.

KCU threatened on the break and Walker

came to gather a free-kick, a dangerous Garnett

left-wing corner was returned into the area by Stenner-Corbishley but the visiting keeper gath-

ered well, and the half drew to a close with KCU

    flicking a right-wing throw-in just over the Uni-versity crossbar.

Endeavour by Ryan early in the second period

earned University a right-wing corner that Nin-

ness again delivered dangerously into the KCU area and Wouts created a shooting opportunity

for Ryan that was struck right of target.

KCU gained some ascendancy with a shot finding Walker from distance, McLean making a

superb double-interception in his area with first

an outstretched boot and then regaining his foot-ing to head away, and another KCU strike went

    over the bar.

The visiting side should arguably have taken

the lead when a free-kick delivered into a similar position as had created the equaliser was headed

back across goal but no runners arrived.

Following a positive University attack, KCU threatened at the other end when a lob from the

right was touched just past the far post and then

central-defender Dan Diggins made a timely slid-ing interception. However, the resulting right-

wing corner ultimately led to KCU scoring the

winner when a returned ball created a close-range heading opportunity on 71 minutes.

McLean created a shooting opportunity for

Wouts but the KCU keeper was up to the task,

the defender was then called upon to again clear his own lines, and back at the other end Wouts

once more found the KCU keeper when striking

off a right-wing cross. With KCU expressing a strong physicality and

determination to protect its lead as the match

progressed, University delivered several balls in-to its opponents area but without creating genu-ine clear-cut opportunities.

As the full-time whistle approached, substi-tute University left-midfielder Dave Hudson had

the final chance to equalise when volleying a

Garnett delivery from the right just wide.

Coachs comments: Ultimately we were unable to overcome the conspiring factors presented by

this fixture -- ie, a significant list of injuries/unavailabilities, numerous on field positional/

    personnel changes and a progressively-physical

    opponent on a difficult surface.

The manner in which we attempted to spread our available numbers across the clubs top two

  • sides undoubtedly disrupted our preparation --

there can be no debate we took the field with a different presence to that which saw us 2-0 up

after six minutes the previous week. While under-

standable at the time, the gamble also arguably cost some legs as the game developed, albeit the

lads have not gone looking for excuses in post-

match discussion. That said, the two non-regulars given starts

acquitted themselves well -- Jared got on the

score sheet again for us before being taken off the park as much for his own safety as anything and

Pete battled away manfully while showing some

nice invention. In fact I felt Pete was one of our

best performers on the day and he duly earned the man-of-the-match.

Weve now eased off for the week in training to try and let some weary bodies recover, given our weekend off. Training will ramp up again in

earnest next week and there will be some hard

decisions to make over some selections.

The halfway point is over, as is the mid-season review. At this point a total of seven Varsity sides in the top three in their divisions. Its a great place to be and good luck to all the teams playing this week. Special mention to the derby game at Kelburn Park and the Uni Beavers looking for a win to cement its place at the top of Capital 7.
