From our President:

I would like to recognize and thank the Social Committee under the leadership of Stella Dorsman for the fantastic Christmas Luncheon held on December 18th. Our M.C., Dawn Aitken, performed her duties with much grace, style and humour. The entertainment was all in-house, starting with Art Veroba who sang for us prior to dinner. The Ukulele Group, under the leadership of Susan Wood, led us in a sing-along which highlighted many beloved Christmas songs. To close the program, our choir under the leadership of Marg Allen, with Anna Huston on the piano, performed for the first time and they sang their hearts out. You could feel their joy as they sang, and the smiles on their faces said it all. Their beautiful voices, harmony and selection of songs were the highlight of the day. Well done to all.

The Christmas luncheon ended the year for our club on a very high note. The fact that we have so many people all working together speaks directly to the success of our club. You could feel the joy, witness the fellowship and hear the laughter of our members.

As President, I have been given the honour and privilege of providing leadership to the Probus Club of Clarington. I have a remarkable Management Team, each of whom has given such dedication and commitment to ensure the success of our club. I would also like to recognize and thank the many members who volunteer to serve on committees or simply lend a hand when asked. Finally, I want to extend a sincere thank you to all of the wonderful, faithful members of the Club who attend and support us. Together, we move into a new year a very energized, healthy, active and vibrant Club.

On behalf of the Management Committee, may I pray that 2020 is a year of much Love, Health and Happiness to every one of you.

“Happy New Year”.

December Probus Meeting

Myno Van Dyke related facts about the

Noreen Greenly case. It was a step back in

time as well as an interesting real life story.

It is a cold case that is still being pondered.

Santa Jim asked “volunteer” participants

questions on a Christmas theme. They all

were winners!

Share the Wealth:

The December Winner was Brian Fredenburgh, who won $74.00. Congratulations!

News from your Social Committee:

Your Social Committee is already planning new and exciting activities and events for 2020 which we will be announcing over the next few months. In the meantime, sports fans, please remember the Marlies game on March 21st in Toronto and the Harlem Globetrotters on April 10th in Oshawa. We need to sell 12 seats and 10 seats respectively for these outings to take place.

The January meeting will be the final opportunity to sign up for the Games Afternoon and Dinner at the Snug on January 28th.

Three tickets remain for the Tour and Tea at the Ontario Legislature on April 17th .

Interest Groups:

Interest groups are thriving in the Clarington Probus Club. Please visit our table at the Coffee break to sign up for all you are interested in. Remember the best way to meet our members and have fun is to join our Interest Groups. It is surprising how quickly you feel a part of the club. Two new Proposed Interest Groups: Stampin’ Up- This idea was brought forward by a brand new member. She will bring a sample of this “craft” to our January meeting. So stop by and see what it is all about. Ladies who Lunch - We are thinking of starting a once a month lunch group for the ladies of Probus. Stop by and see what this is about. It should be fun. There is much more on our table, so please come see us. Kathleen Brear

The Probus choir, Melody Makers performed at the Bowmanville Creek Retirement Community earlier this month. They are already taking their show “on the road”.

Above is a picture of the first Probus book club now in its fourth year. We met at Victoria's house for our annual Christmas potluck with an Indian motif in keeping with the last book we read Behind The Beautiful Forevers by Katherine Boo. Unfortunately, 3 of our members were missing. We have a warm wonderful group of gals. Edwina Johnston

This is Probus Book Club #3 at our December Book club meeting. We usually meet at the library but for Christmas, we had a pot luck lunch. Susan H. kindly hosted our group at her home. Our group has enjoyed a variety of books from the classics to mysteries to biographies. Photo by Cathy Spracklin

Ode To January - by Alicia Moss

'Twas the month after Christmas, and all through the house

Nothing would fit me, not even a blouse.

The cookies I'd nibbled, the eggnog I'd taste

At the holiday parties had gone to my waist.

Website Report

Our website continues to be well used. Thank you, Lynn, for all your hard work.

Here’s a good winter tip: Never catch snowflakes on your tongue until all the birds have flown south for the winter.

Eve-Ann Reid sent in this lovely Santa photo.

What did the snowman and his wife put over their baby’s crib?

A snowmobile!

Q: What do you call ten Arctic hares hopping

backwards through the snow together?

A: A receding hare line.
