INJURY

Bowmanville student’s finger severed BOWMANVILLE -- A young student was rushed to hospital after having a finger severed outside her Bowmanville school Monday morning. Police and paramedics retrieved the severed digit after the incident, at about 10:40 a.m., at Holy Family Catholic School on Aspen Springs Boulevard. The child was transferred by ambu-lance to SickKids hospital in Toronto where she underwent surgery to reattach

the finger, Durham police said. Police said the nine-year-old girl was playing near a metal gate at an entrance to the school when the mechanism was somehow moved and her finger was caught. The Ministry of Labour was notified of the incident. As of Clarington This Week’s press time it was not known if doctors could reat-tach the girl’s finger.

Zumba 4 Kids fundraiser

will support children’s

sports participation

JENNIFER O’MEARA [email protected]

NEWCASTLE -- The community will soon be dancing for Clarington kids. A Zumba 4 Kids fundraiser will be held on Saturday, April 30. “As a registered nurse and a health-care pro-vider, I was tired of seeing obesity rates rise in children and diabetes in children. It made me sad,” said Sharon Gilbank, part-time fitness instructor. “This is to raise awareness of get-ting healthy again. Getting off the chair and moving.” The popular Zumba dance fitness class has spawned a close-knit community in Claring-ton, according to Ms. Gilbank. “She has cultivated a huge following ... there’s a lot of love and admiration,” said Car-issa Stewart, who is volunteering for the fund-raiser. “I became a crony right away. I loved the classes, I loved the energy.” Now the group is putting its dance moves to good use, raising awareness and funds for kids’ fitness with a local danceathon. The money raised will go to the GoodLife Kids Foundation, which offers kids a chance to get involved in physical activity, from school break programs to helping families who can’t

afford to enroll their children in organized sports. The target is to raise $5,000 for the program. The money raised will stay in Clarington to support local children. “This is a community-based project, which is important to me. I’m a Bowmanville girl, born and raised,” said Ms. Gilbank. The danceathon runs for two hours, but participants can stop and enjoy a massage or refreshment at any time. The event is open to people of any age, said Ms. Stewart, who added her 10-year-old daughter loves the dance classes. To publicize the fundraiser, the organizers held a flash mob in the Oshawa Centre on March 26. Approximately 150 people turned out to break into a dance routine in the foyer. “It was awesome,” said Ms. Stewart. “The Bowmanville crowd was, of course, the big-gest. We all wore yellow.” On Saturday, April 16 the group will be holding a gently-used clothing sale outside the Bowmanville GoodLife Fitness Club. “I have a committee of ladies who are incredible,” said Ms. Gilbank. The Zumba 4 Kids fundraiser will be held on Saturday, April 30 at St. Francis of Assi-si on Rudell Road in Newcastle. Registration begins at 1 p.m., and the dancing goes from 2 to 4 p.m. The fundraiser requires a $20 dona-tion in advance per dancer, or a $25 donation at the door. For more information:

POLITICS

Deja vu for Parliament, say Durham voters

Another vote, same results predict shoppers

CHRIS HALL [email protected]

OSHAWA -- A waste of money and a waste of time is how Paul Knott describes next month’s federal election. “I’m a little ticked off we’re having it,” said the Port Hope resident on Saturday as he wandered from shop to shop in the Oshawa Centre. “I just don’t think people care about it that much.” Voters will go to the polls on May 2 after the Conservative minority government was top-pled last month following a non-confidence vote. But the hustling for votes by candidates across the country serve only as background noise in Mr. Knott’s world. “It’s not something on top of everyone’s mind, at least not right now,” he said of the election. Besides, he added, all the money and effort spent on the May 2 election will not change Canada’s political landscape. “It’s just going to be the same pattern again -- we’re going to get a minority Conservative government again, waste $300 million and end up with the same result,” said Mr. Knott. Ed Ryan’s hoping for a different result in this general election -- Canada’s fourth in seven years. “I’m really hoping for a majority Con-servative government this time,” said the Newcastle resident on Saturday as he wan-dered throughout the sprawling Oshawa mall. “I’m upset that this has been brought on by the Liberals,” he continued. “It’s going to backfire on them because I think the Con-servatives are going to get a majority because people are fed up with (Liberal leader Michael) Ignatieff trying to be king.” Overall, however, the election has garnered a lukewarm response amongst Mr. Ryan’s circle of friends. “There’s been some talk,” he said of his neighbours’ interest. “But not much.”

Harry Gamble just shook his head when asked about the election. “They’re all a bunch of thieves, every one of them,” he said of politicians. His take on the May 2 vote? “The Liberals won’t get in. The NDP? Forget about them. And the Conservatives won’t get a majority,” said Mr. Gamble, relaxing with a coffee by a small table basked in a beautiful afternoon sun. He harkened back to a time, about 20 years ago, he said, when politics were about the issues at hand and not about personal mud-slinging. “They didn’t try and cut each other’s

throats like they do now,” summed up Mr. Gamble. Mark Corbeil leaned against a kiosk in the middle of the Oshawa Centre, waiting for his wife to return. This election is all about the party leaders -- and it’s not looking good for Mr. Ignatieff, he said. “It’s a tough call,” he said of the election. “The Liberals are a good party but it’s all based on the leaders now.” Mr. Corbeil likes Prime Minister Stephen Harper, but not the Conservatives. And he certainly is not a fan of the Liberal leader: “I don’t like Ignatieff, I don’t like the

way he comes across.” His wife, on the other hand, is a true Grit supporter. “She’s all red,” said Mr. Corbeil. As for the election itself, he shrugged his shoulders when asked about its necessity. “Do we need it? Probably not. I don’t think there’s a need for it,” said Mr. Corbeil, predict-ing another Tory minority. “It’ll be the same,” he said of Parliament’s make-up following the May 2 vote. “There’ll be no huge difference.” Trevor McCullagh’s a busy guy and he has very little time to pay attention to anoth-er election. On Saturday, he was manning a booth at the Oshawa Centre for the North Oshawa Lions Club, selling raffle tickets. “No, I’m not following it. I’ve got other things on my mind,” he said as he tried to sell tickets for a chance to win a 1968 Camaro SS. “I haven’t been following it closely at all.” He’d like to see the local economy improve and hopes more employment opportunities are created, but conceded he’s got little inter-est in the election. “There hasn’t been a whole heckuva lot of talk about it,” said Mr. McCullagh.Page 6 - Today’s editorial

DURHAM -- Parliament Hill in Ottawa is beautiful at this time of year but currently it sits empty as MPs are busy seeking re-election. Most Durham residents we spoke to don’t believe much will change after the May 2 vote.

Clarington firefighters’ weekend includes suspicious fire, house hit by lightning and rescuing dog

JENNIFER O’MEARA [email protected]

CLARINGTON -- A Burketon house was destroyed by fire Saturday night in the first of three incidents that kept the Clarington fire department busy over the weekend. Firefighters were dispatched to an unoc-cupied house at the corner of Burketon Lane and Roy Carter Street just before midnight on April 9, according to Deputy Fire Chief Mark Berney. Flames were vis-ible through the roof and windows when firefighters arrived. It took the 35 firefighters on 11 trucks until 3 a.m. to put out the large blaze. Red tape surrounded the gutted home on Sun-day morning. Debris could be seen scattered across the property and a fire truck remained at the scene. The house was destroyed and the dam-age is estimated to be more than $250,000, according to Deputy Chief Berney.

There were no injuries. The cause of the fire is considered to be suspicious and an investigation is ongoing. Meanwhile, a Bowmanville house was struck by lightning during a Sunday morn-ing storm. Firefighters were called to Meadowview Boulevard at 11:42 a.m. after lightning hit

a house. Three trucks with 14 firefighters were dispatched. “It appears (lightning) may have hit twice -- a roof vent and an eavestrough,” said Deputy Chief Berney. The house did not catch fire, but the damage is in excess of $40,000. No one was home during the storm and

no injuries were reported. In the third incident, Clarington fire-fighters rescued a dog from a Courtice house fire and gave him oxygen on Sun-day evening. A Courtice resident arrived home to find smoke at 7:15 p.m. Firefighters responded to a Rosswell Drive house to find an elec-trical fire in the kitchen that is believed to have been started by the dishwasher, according to Deputy Chief Berney. The 18 firefighters put out the fire quick-ly and rescued the pet. “Believe it or not, the guys found the dog in the house and brought him out and gave him O2. He had at least 10 minutes of smoke inhalation,” said Deputy Chief Ber-ney, who added the dog is doing well. The damage to the house is thought to be in excess of $60,000, according to fire department reports. The majority of that cost is smoke damage.

FEDERAL ELECTION

Make sure you ge t out and vote To the editor: I would like to thank the Liberal, NDP and Bloc Quebecois parties for costing us taxpayers another few hundred million over foolishness. Did you want an early election? Every-body I talked to last week, whomever they supported, didn’t ask for an election. Go figure, the rocket scientists took it upon themselves to decide for us. Well let’s get it together and vote. You people know what that is don’t you? Let’s flood the polls, hit the advanced polls on the weekend if you work 1,000 hours a week to survive because we are taxed to death. I will pester, poke, prod and downright drive everybody I know nuts so they will vote so we can get a majority this time. Don’t tell me your vote won’t make a dif-ference. Think of the big picture. Let’s stop the foolishness and waste this time. Get out there and support your candidate. See you at the advanced polls.

Andrew CieslikCourtice

***

This is exactly the time for an election To the editor: Re: ‘Now is not the time to force an elec-tion’, editorial opinion, durhamregion.com, March 24, 2011. Now is the time for an election. With the federal election a little over a month away,

many people are questioning the need for it. In my opinion, it is the most important time for an election in the Durham riding. Having talked to many young people, I have been told that the chance of them finding rewarding and fulfilling employ-ment in Durham is almost impossible. They have told me they will probably

have to move to Toronto. As a lifelong resident of Durham and have seen the good and bad times in our area, this is a real shame. Durham has great potential with our youth, our location in the GTA and our strong work ethic. However, we need a member of Parlia-ment who cares about the future of Dur-ham. We need a representative who can

bring new, fresh ideas and innovation to Durham. A representative who will really care about our youth and the future of Durham. I have not seen this from a representative for Durham in a long time.

Mark CanningTyrone

ENVIRONMENT Please stop littering, make our community beautiful To the editor: While driving home in Bowmanville recently, I noticed a teenaged boy on a skateboard going in the same direction as me. From behind, I noticed that he was hold-ing something like a pillow that was losing some of its white stuffing. I wanted to open the window and tell him, but I was in the far lane (with a car between us) and in a hurry. But in my rearview mirror, I could see that it was a big bag of shredded paper that he was throw-ing out. I was upset that someone was purposely littering tiny pieces of paper -- which are not easy to clean. With Earth Day coming this month, I will be doing a lot of community cleaning, with groups, and on my own. Please, don’t lit-ter!

Weary resignation among Durham Region’s voters To hear area residents tell it, the only peo-ple anxious for another federal election are the people who live and die on a daily basis inside Ottawa’s national political bubble. Here at home, there’s not much of a driving interest among everyday voters to head back to the polls for the fourth time in seven years, and especially for what is expected to be a repeat election day per-formance, namely a federal Conservative minority government. That’s contrary to what the pollsters might be suggesting, but is a notion that appears to have taken hold of average voters strug-gling to pay higher prices and taxes, who worry about job security and who have far

more pressing issues confronting them in their lives. For many, the May 2 national election -- with a cost of approximately $300 million -- will do little to change Canada’s political landscape. It will be deja vu all over again, as the immortal Yogi Berra once said. Those who spoke to the Metroland Dur-ham Region Media Group while out for a day of shopping on the weekend shared their opinions freely. Some supported the Conservatives, others the Liberals. Some are hoping for a majority government to end the seemingly endless elections, while others expect a very similar minority situ-ation. Some blame the Liberals for forc-

ing the election, others have succeeded in simply ignoring it entirely. Distilled, the varied opinions boil down to a collective, weary resignation, if not outright election fatigue. To address that, the Liberals, Conser-vatives and NDP must do more to inspire voters, to share a clear vision of the future under a government led by their party, to give them clear alternatives to the status quo. Television attack ads serve a purpose in vilifying one’s opponent, but do nothing to inform the electorate. Campaign bro-chures offer little more than tired old party slogans and empty rhetoric. Too many can-

didates spend their time telling us why we shouldn’t vote for the others. Durham Region residents, like most of the rest of the country, have had their fill of living in the present while our politi-cal leaders keep looking to the past. They want a government that will go forward with bold ideas, honest and ethical repre-sentatives, and who will embrace the dear-ly held traditions of our democratic insti-tutions. They want strong fiscal managers and a government that sees compromise as a strength and not a weakness. What they don’t want is more political gridlock and jockeying, do-nothing agen-das, and mud-slinging representatives.

Williams churns out thousands of chocolate

rabbits and eggs in Whitby

CRYSTAL [email protected]

WHITBY -- It’s the birthplace of thousands of bunnies each spring, but this place doesn’t smell like a barn -- it smells like chocolate. Located on Hopkins Street in Whitby, Williams Chocolate is in full speed right

now, churning out bunnies, eggs, and other Easter-related items for its busi-est time of the year. “We make thousands of these bug-gers,” said Anneke Hellema in her

thick Dutch accent, as she popped small bunnies out of a mold. “We can’t

stand them anymore by the time it’s Eas-ter.

“Easter is our biggest thing,” Ms. Helle-ma added.

She and her husband, Willem Hellema, started making chocolate about 25 years ago

after immigrating to Canada and Durham Region from Holland, where Mr. Hellema was a pastry

chef. Their sweet adventure began in their apartment,

but they quickly outgrew the space as everything in it became covered in chocolate. They moved the operation to a location near Hwy. 12 in Whitby until about 15 years ago, when they had their cur-rent spot at 460 Hopkins St. constructed. Today, the location remains the only place where Williams Chocolate is sold, making the trip from factory to showroom short and sweet. Behind the neatly wrapped chocolates for sale in the front, the strong smell of cocoa wafted out of the company’s production area, where big wheels churned tempered chocolate into a flow-

ing pool below. Melting pots turned large bricks of Belgian chocolate into a transformable state, and

molds of bunnies, eggs and baskets were filled and cooled, and finally popped out and packaged for

sale. Although the process is pretty simple,

the temperature each task is performed at is crucial to ensure the chocolate looks and

tastes right. “It’s a trade, it’s not some-thing everybody can just do over-night,” Ms. Hellema said. As she moved through the produc-

tion room, a handful of employees worked on filling molds and pre-paring chocolates for sale. At one station, a woman worked on making white chocolate eggs. After holding a warmed mold under a pouring spout of melted white chocolate, she scraped the excess chocolate from the top, and placed the mold on a vibrator to get air bubbles out. She then placed another mold of chocolate egg halves on top and fastened it in place before putting it on a rack for the cooler. If the eggs were to have a filling, the mold would have been filled, scraped, and vibrated, then dumped so only a thin coating of choc-olate remained, as Ms. Hellema demonstrated. They would then be cooled to harden, before getting the filling added, which would then be cooled again, and at last, receive a final layer of chocolate before going into the cooler one last time. “So now you know the secret of how the caramel comes in,” she said. They also roast and grind their own nuts, make their own cara-mel, and add different flavours to chocolate. And although Williams remains a small business, it’s not like they’ve had to; they’ve been approached by companies such as The Bay with requests to carry the product, but refused, Ms. Hellema said. To take their shop to that next level, they would have had to invest in machines, worry about losing a big customer, and lose that small business touch and closeness. “We have enough work to keep this place going,” she said. For a small shop, their product has gone well beyond the bor-ders of Durham Region, as a map riddled with pins in the storefront illustrates. Each of the hundreds of pins represents somewhere Wil-liams Chocolate has found its way through gifts or other means. “You can see England is full,” she said, and pointed to another pin representing an opera singer in Moscow who enjoyed the choco-late. Locally the store has won numerous Metroland Reader’s Choice awards. For more information on Williams Chocolate:

Where were you born?

I was born in a city called Kaliningrad onthe Baltic Sea which was a German citybefore WW2 but is now in Russia. I livedthere for only a few months as we had toleave because of the war. My grandparentsand I ended up south of Stuttgart in a smallbeautiful village surrounded by vineyards.I spent the best time of my youth there, making many friends.

Family Members?

I have one older sister and an older brotherand I am married to my sweetheart, Elfi, for 34 years. Our honeymoon was a trip toCanada and we never looked back.

Career?

I completed a 3 year pastry chefapprenticeship in Germany and a 2 year

cooks apprenticeship in Switzerland and worked as a chef in Italy, Greece,England & Sweden. In 1967 I worked for a short stint at the Royal York Hotel andwas part of the opening of the Sutton Place Hotel in Toronto. After a summerjob in Algonquin Park I started teaching hospitality at General Vanier S.S. inOshawa. I did my history degree at Trent University and a teaching degree atU of Toronto. I retired from Pine Ridge S.S. in Pickering as a technical director.I was always actively involved in the teacher Federation throughout my careerand was ready to help students who needed extra help. Coaching soccer wasmy passion.

Years in Rotary?

Two years ago a good friend of mine ask me several times to join Rotary. He wasconvinced I had something to offer for this great organization. It was none otherthan Ross Metcalf, one of the finest people I have ever met. I have never regrettedthe decision to join the Bowmanville Rotary Club.

What do you like about Rotary?

I appreciate that there are many citizens in our community who think like meand help where help is needed. I enjoy the camaraderie and good humor andthe general feeling of belonging to a great community.

Favourite books/authors?

I do not necessarily have a favourite book or author but I do enjoy anyhistory books which tells a story which changed the world of today. Thiscould be Canadian, American or European historical events of significance.I spent most of my studies focusing on Canadian and native history. Oneunderstands the present much better knowing the history and past of ourcountry.

Favourite food?

There are many, particularly when cooking is my passion. Seafood of anykind I could eat daily, but also home made pasta and lamb are some of thefavourites on my list.

Favourite music?

I am a classics freak. I love the opera and other classics such as old NewOrleans jazz. I listen to many Canadian musicians such as Gordon Lightfootand as a young person I played for hours the Beatles and ABBA.

Favourite place in Bowmanville/Clarington?

I love a coffee at Bella Donna’s or lunch at the Chanterelle Bistro restaurantas one always meets familiar people after having lived in this neighborhoodfor over 30 years.

Spending an hour at the Newcastle beach watching the ducks and one lonelyswan is one of my best times.

Person/people I admire?

There are many, but the most outstanding was my cook master who pointedme in the right direction in life. I needed this. As well my grandma who lovedme more than anybody else as a child and of course now my dear wife Elfi.

A favoured childhood memory?

My old tree house in the hundred plus year pear tree in Weinstadt Germanywhich is still standing today.

Clarington atom AAA team winsOHF tournamentin Bowmanville

BRIAN MCNAIR [email protected]

BOWMANVILLE -- It turns out hosting the Ontario Hockey Fed-eration championship tourna-ment made all the difference in the world for the Clarington atom AAA team. Playing before a packed and boisterous house at the Garnet B. Rickard Recreation Complex, the host team avenged an earlier defeat to the favoured Mississau-ga Rebels with a 2-0 win in Sunday afternoon’s championship game, delivering Clarington its first-ever OHF gold medal. It capped a dream season for the group of 10- and 11-year-old play-ers, who also captured the Ontar-io Minor Hockey Association title three weeks earlier. “To get two golds, I never thought in a million years that would hap-pen, so I’m pretty proud of the boys, that’s for sure,” said head coach Dean Baumhauer. “They’re going to run into each other down the road in all different avenues of life and they’re always going to have that connection now. They’re double champs. That will be a memory that will always hold.” Baumhauer credited a com-plete team effort and tremen-dous fan support for the main rea-

sons behind the win, which came despite the fact Clarington was the lowest-seeded team among the five taking part, according to myhockeyrankings.com. And Baumhauer admitted his team looked over-matched in the first meeting against Mississau-ga Saturday night, but after being dominated through two periods, Clarington scored the only goal of the third period to at least build some momentum heading into Sunday, despite a 3-1 defeat. In the rematch, which came after a thrilling 5-4 semifinal victo-

ry over the Waterloo Wolves earli-er in the day, goalie Alex Lepizzera was perfect, and Riley McCutch-eon’s first-period goal turned out to be all they would need to cap-ture the crown. “We just played an absolute per-fect game with every kid buying into what we sort of thought was the best way to beat this team,” Baumhauer said. “When we scored the first goal, we just rode the crowd,” he added. “Clarington just showed so well. It’s hometown hockey. If this was being held in Mississauga, there’d

be parents in the crowd only. That’s the difference in holding it in a town like Clarington. We had the whole town’s support. It was an amazing scene to see.” Clarington finished second to Mississauga in the round robin with a 2-1-1 record, beating Water-loo 2-1 in the opener, tying Hamil-ton 2-2 and beating Vaughan, the top-ranked team, 3-1, before fall-ing to the Rebels. In the semifinal, Clarington jumped out to a 3-1 lead but trailed 4-3 through two peri-ods after Waterloo scored three

straight power-play goals, the final one with eight seconds remaining in the period. “Like all year, these kids just showed how much heart they had to come back and score in the first 30 seconds of the third period, and bang another one in to win the game 5-4,” Baumhauer said of the semifinal. Lepizzera played in five of the six games in goal for Clarington, and was named the most valuable player of the final after the shutout. McCutcheon, too, was key, scor-ing the winning goal in the gold medal games at both the OMHA and OHF tournaments. But Baumhauer insisted if ever there was a total team effort attrib-uted to a championship, this was it. “The rest of the teams don’t have the depth that we have and the contributions from everybody,” he said. “That was the difference. When every other coach short-ened their bench, we kept rolling our lines, rolling our lines, rolling our lines, to the point where we just wore them down. “They’re a group that’s so tight I’ve never seen anything like it and I’ve played my whole life,” he continued. “They’re just a group of friends and it shows in the way they play for each other.” Other team members are Scott Westwood, Ryan Pierce, Mitchell Doyle, Brett Underwood, Owen Boyle, Ian Maclean, Riley Girard, Tyler Jones, Ryan Troughton, Cameron Hillis, Jamie Engelbert, Declan Chisholm, Liam Robert-son, Mason Snell and Nathan Baumhauer.

spearhead Faria to victory over a team they have struggled to beat in the past. The Trojans battled back but were unable to over-come the two-goal deficit. Before advancing to the cham-pionship match, Faria faced the task of earning victories over the Brighton Braves and CYO Dur-ham Chaos. In the opening game, Faria disposed of the Brighton Braves

9-0 behind the play of Bran-don Morris, who registered four goals and one assist in the con-test. Wert chipped in with two goals and three assists, and Joseph Mercer helped out with two goals. Zach Roden had the other goal. The shutout was shared between Jacob Cooledge and Jesse Baker. The opening game propelled Faria into a collision course with

the CYO Durham Chaos. Faria overwhelmed the opposition en route to 8-1 victory. Wert and Roden led the way with three goals apiece. Morris and Jon-athan Marks both chipped in with one goal respectively and Thomas Sabo helped set them all up by posting a game-high four assists. Marks was awarded with the tournament MVP.

Oshawa lookingto rebound tonight

SHAWN CAYLEY [email protected]

OSHAWA -- A poor 20 minutes of hockey cost the Oshawa Generals dearly on Monday night. A forgettable first period saw the Niagara IceDogs jump out of the gate and grab a 2-0 lead less than three minutes in, then extend their advantage to 4-0 later in the period, setting the stage for a 5-3 Gener-als loss in Game 3 of their Eastern Conference semifinal series. Niagara now leads the series two games to one heading into Game 4 tonight, 7:05, at the General Motors Centre. Ryan Strome scored just 1:03 in, followed by Simon Gronvaldt just over a minute later, while Andrew Agozzino and Darren Archibald added their own later in the frame as part of a 16-shot barrage on Oshawa netminder Peter Di Salvo. Simply put, the Generals came out flat and couldn’t recover. “Certainly, I think in the first peri-od, they had what I would deem a little more urgency than we did

and I think they capitalized on their chances,” coach and GM Chris DePiero said in reflection on Tues-day. “As the game went on we cer-tainly got better and started playing our game a little bit more but we fell behind the eight ball with respect to that and played catch-up.” In playing catch-up, the Gener-als outshot the IceDogs 36-17 over the final two periods, 49-33 all told, and outscored them 3-1. And though it sounds simple, 40 minutes is far from a com-plete hockey game. While DePiero believes his team was receptive to that message between the first and second periods on Monday, it’s a point he’ll continue to hammer home leading into and throughout tonight as they look to avoid fall-ing behind 3-1 in the series. That would leave them on the cusp of elimination heading into Game 5 Friday in St. Catharines. “At this stage of the season, it’s not about yelling and scream-ing, it’s just about getting our guys to understand the message,” he said. “We need to make sure that we’re fully understanding that it’s a 60-minute hockey game.” On the plus side, Oshawa showed the same bounce-back ability they have on many a night this season.

The early deficit put them down, but far from out, and they kept pounding away at the IceDogs, scratching back to within a goal inside the final minute before Ago-zzino’s second of the game into an

empty net sealed it. Heading into tonight, DePiero hopes to get back to the basic prem-ise that allowed for the team’s suc-cess in winning the opening round against Kingston and skating out of

Game 2 last Saturday with a win. “I think the biggest thing is we have to manage what we do and what we do well,” he said. “When we do that, and have that focus, we can be a pretty good team.”

~ Death leaves a heartache no one can heal,

love leaves a memory no one can steal.~

In loving memory of Leigh Andrew Gadsden,

June 4, 1971 - April 8, 2011

Leigh was the loving spouse of Ruth Estwick. Leigh and Ruth began their life together almost 10 years ago. After a year of courtship, Leigh got down on bended knee in front of hundreds of people and proposed to Ruth. From that day forward, together they raised two beautiful boys, Tyler David Gary and Keegan Leigh Stewart until the arrival of their cherished daughter, Riley Kathryn in 2006. Leigh was a loving father and had a heart of gold. He would warm your heart with his beautiful smile, make every attempt to crack a joke to make you laugh and give you the shirt off his back if he thought it would help you. Leigh was the wonderful son-in-law of Mona Leonard and amazing brother-in-law of Sandra & Bob, Linda & Louie, David & Sibel and Paul & Norma. He was the best uncle that Kaitlynd Schad could ask for and loved all his nieces and nephews dearly. Leigh was a friend to many, and most that met him instantly became his friend. Friends like Mark, Errol, Laura, Bill, Pat & Roger and many, many more cherished Leigh's friendship. Leigh created a family of friends at Agincourt Chrysler where he worked for many years. We loved Leigh with all our hearts and he will be missed every day. Many thanks to all the neighbours, friends, family and coworkers who have stood by Ruth and her beautiful children during this tragic time.
