August - September 2012 Church news

Oct. 2012 - Nov. 2013 declared as “Year of Faith”

Open the door of faith - Pope Benedict XVI

VATICAN CITY – Made pub-lic last October 11, 2011 was “Porta Fidei”, the Apostolic Letter “Motu Proprio data” with which Benedict XVI pro-claimed a “Year of Faith” to begin on 11 October 2012, fif-tieth anniversary of the open-ing of Vatican Council II, and due to end on 24 November 2013, Feast of Christ the King. (VIS) Noting that people’s involve-ment in secular affairs makes the faith “a self-evident pre-supposition for life in society,” the Holy Father opened for the faithful the “door of faith” as entrance into the life of com-munion with God and the Church. “The ‘door of faith’ (Acts 14:27) is always open for us, ushering us into the life of communion with God and of-fering entry into his Church. It is possible to cross that thresh-old when the word of God is proclaimed and the heart al-lows itself to be shaped by transforming grace.” The ultimate purpose of the year of faith is to enliven the life of all the faithful, with special emphasis on Christian witnessing. “The renewal of the Church is also achieved through the witness offered by the lives of believers: by their very exis-tence in the world, Christians are called to radiate the word of truth that the Lord Jesus has left us.” “Reflection on the faith will have to be intensified, so as to help all believers in Christ to acquire a more conscious and vigorous adherence to the Gospel, especially at a time of profound change such as hu-manity is currently experienc-ing.” The Holy Father roots the Year of Faith in adherence and faithfulness to the Eucharist which is central to the faith. “It will also be a good op-portunity to intensify the cel-ebration of the faith in the liturgy, especially in the Eu-charist, which is “the summit towards which the activity of the Church is directed; ... and also the source from which all its power flows.” The Pope underscored the importance of public testimo-ny, commitment, and a witness to charity as the fruits of a re-newed faith. “The Year of Faith will also be a good opportunity to in-

Archbishop to Congress: Prioritize needs of flood victims over RH bill

MANILA, August 8, 2012—After Congress “prematurely” terminated the debates over the controversial Reproduc-tive Health (RH) bill, both pro and anti-RH bill legislators are called to give their full atten-tion to the needs of their dis-placed constituents than pri-

oritizing the amendment of the bill’s provisions. In an interview with Youth-Pinoy, Jaro, Iloilo Archbishop Angel Lagdameo said senators and congressmen should pri-oritize rescuing victims of tor-rential rains and consequential floods in Metro Manila and neighboring provinces in Lu-zon. “Attending to their constitu-ents who are left displaced by floods should be prioritized by the Congress. This is far more urgent than railroading the

passage of RH bill into law,” he said. The sudden turn of events has disappointed Church lead-ers, pro-life groups and Catho-lic lay organizations pushing for the junking of the RH bill. But Meanwhile, Lagdameo en-couraged prolifers to carry on with their advocacy. “Do not lose hope. Our cam-paign continues. I hope you do not surrender because of this challenge. As for the members of the

Upper and Lower Houses of Congress, unto whose hands the fate of RH bill depends, Lagdameo urged them to “be discerning.” “I hope that they will dis-cern on what will truly bring about the common good for our country,” he said. Aside from the legislators, Lagdameo also called on the lay faithful to help their coun-trymen in this time of calamity by volunteering in rescue and relief operations. (YouthPinoy/CBCP News)

tensify the witness of charity. As Saint Paul reminds us: “So faith, hope, love abide, these three; but the greatest of these is love.” (1 Cor 13:13) This is Pope Benedict’s hope and prayer: “May this Year of Faith make our relationship with Christ the Lord increas-ingly firm, since only in him is there the certitude for looking to the future and the guaran-tee of an authentic and lasting love. The words of Saint Pe-ter shed one final ray of light on faith: ‘In this you rejoice, though now for a little while you may have to suffer various trials, so that the genuineness of your faith, more precious than gold which though per-ishable is tested by fire, may redound to praise and glory and honour at the revelation of Jesus Christ. Without having seen him you love him; though you do not now see him you believe in him and rejoice with unutterable and exalted joy. As the outcome of your faith you obtain the salvation of your souls.’” (1 Pet 1:6-9)

“A glimpse of the past: from Manila to Pasig – tracing a rich heritage of faith”; tata-

“Seizing the grace of the moment: living the present with enthusiasim”; tatalakayin nito ang Kristiyanog pamumu-hay sa Pasig, Pateros, at Taguig at ang panawagan sa “comunio in mission” mula kay Obispo Francisco San Diego hanggang kay Obispo Mylo Vergara; 3. “The Diocese of Pasig – living the priestly prayer of Jesus, “Ut unum sint”; tatal-akayin ang apat na tanda ng pagiging Simbahan at ang mga parokya bilang “communion of communities”; 4. “Ministry in the Church as humble, loving service” (John 13); tatalakayin ang servant-leadership sa kaparian, lay

empowerment at consecrated life bilang propsiya sa Simba-han.

4 DALOY Diocese of Pasig

August - September 2012

This writer recognizes the vast po-tentials of using media to reach out

to our parishioners, especially our un-churched Catholic brethren. Pasig, Pateros, and Taguig, with an estimated population of 1.1 million (ac-cording to the 2007 NSO estimate), has 94% belonging to the DE classes with majority working in the industrial sec-tor while the rest are in agricultural and casual sectors. The average monthly income is pegged at 5 thousand pesos a month. According to SWS survey of 2000, 52% of the Filipinos regard themselves as happy. But further on, it was re-vealed especially among young people that happiness depends on the follow-ing factors: careers, families, love, and money. The economic classes also reveal differing concepts of happiness: the CDE people would focus more on the financial side to be happy while AB people would be happier when with their families. Note that the religious dimension at this point in time is becoming an irrel-evant factor of happiness. Media-wise, a research media group, the Synovate, released the results of a survey conducted last 2007. 65% of the middle and upper class group like looking through advertisements in magazines and newspapers, 42% read the daily newspaper while 31% read a tagalog newspaper. 47% read a maga-zine, with the females outnumbering

men 48% to 52%. Finally, in a Functional Literacy, Education and Mass Media Survey (FLEMMS) conducted last 2007, among the 12 different forms of mass media, TV (61.8%), radio (56.7%), and newspaper (46.5%) were most commonly cited by the respondents as possible sources of knowledge and in-formation while other sources of infor-mation are magazines/ books (35.7%), meetings in barangay, church and other organizations (32.2%), and computer / internet (20%). Though it shows that TV is the still the best alternative to reach out to the people, the print and the events hap-pening at the barangay and parish lev-els are not lagging behind. This itself is the potential of the Print Ministry; and the parishes should affirm every Church-loving writer so that they can reach out to 80% of their parishioners through a sustain-able cost-effective newsletter, tabloid, or bulletin. Every article should con-tribute to the formation of the Catholic and transformation of the whole parish. Each writer should be able to integrate faith and life of the Filipino Catholic and monitor the growth of the parish down to the BEC levels. True is the vision of every media per-son – he should always aim to inform, form, and transform himself and the community according to the likeness of Jesus through the effective presen-

Greetings of Peace and Love! I am glad Daloy is back in

circulation, its first edition since I took over as bishop of Pasig. One thing we the clergy of Pasig have envisioned in terms of sup-port system is to keep our people posted of important events, proj-ects and programs in our Diocese. Our diocesan website was launched last February 2012 and has become a source of information among our parishioners and friends here and abroad. With the diocesan news-paper we are equipped with tools to proclaim the word of God, com-municate various activities as well as needs and concerns of our Dio-cese, Parishes, and those of the people we serve. I therefore encourage our priests in-charge of different ministries to make use of this medium in updat-ing our people of their ministry programs and activities. I am con-fident that as parishioners are made aware of the work we are doing for

God’s greater glory, they too will do their part as sharers in the common mission of building His kingdom in the Diocese of Pasig. I commend our Media Ministry for the task of reaching out to our people and those who have contrib-uted their share to make Daloy once again available to us. This coming October, we will be entering the “Year of Faith” as declared by our Holy Father, Pope Benedict XVI. He wrote: “Ever since the start of my ministry as Successor of Peter, I have spoken of the need to rediscover the journey of faith so as to shed ever clearer light on the joy and renewed enthusiasm of the encounter with Christ.” (Por-ta Fide # 2) I pray that Daloy be-come a humble instrument to make each of us rediscover our faith and renew us in our identity as Catholic Christians serving the Church in our families, our schools, our ministries and parish communities. God bless you all!

In this way, the con-troversy may by some suitable method be avoided or brought to an end. In the relatively wide spectrum of many possible means in the Church forum for the resolution of conflicts among the members of the Christian faithful, that the Board is situated between the purely reconciliatory move and the formal judicial process is intended to respond to the disputes or controver-sies in the ecclesial community in the event that such could not be avoided notwithstanding all honest and sincere intentions and efforts to the contrary. Every birth is a gift from God; every new life, a blessing, every birth, a cause for rejoicing and praising God who create new life only out of love. Our country’s positive birth rate and a population composed of mostly young people are the main players that fuel the economy. A fact that even the government itself acknowledges as it is determined to feed, educate, and keep the young people healthy. And rightly so, for even our Constitution acknowledges that human resource is a primary source of social and economic force. Earlier this year, the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas reported that the hard-earned salaries of overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) that were sent to their families for the first 11 months last year amounted to $18.3 billion, which is 7.3 percent in-crease in the same period in 2010. Filipino men and women who endure the travails of work-ing in foreign soil play a significant role in propping up our economy. The country’s robust population is a big push to our econo-my, according to former US president Bill Clinton, local and international financial institutions, and the public sector. It is therefore quite disturbing when the country is told that having too many school children is a burden to the national budget. Can we have enough of schooled, skilled, diligent, and high-ly driven young people who are a driving force of economic progress? The draconian population control policy of the reproductive health bill would only curtail our economic growth. The prob-lem of countries with former robust economies is the lack of young workers for their industries and inadequate support for their aging population. The issue in maternal death as it has been mentioned is a serious concern. But the solution does not lie in suppressing births as provided in the RH Bill. Providing proper and adequate maternal care could be done without passing the RH bill, but by strengthening and improv-ing access to existing medical services. There is an ill portent for the nation when the government does not look at its own population as a source of grace and blessing. There is a grave reason to worry when the government would rather suppress the population through RH bill instead of confronting the real causes of poverty.+JOSE S. Bilang isang ministerio ng ating simbahan, tuloy-tuloy ang “Social

June 23,2012 marks the first year an-niversary of the installation of Bish-

op Mylo Hubert Vergara as Bishop of the Diocese of Pasig. The year ushered in significant changes and improve-ments most especially in the organiza-tional structure, clergy and lay forma-tion, and pastoral initiatives. He started with streamlining the curia administrative functions. Existing poli-cies of the major functions like Human Resource and Finance, including op-erating procedures were reviewed and documented. Policy manuals for the other departments will follow. These documented policies will not only serve as guidelines but will also stan-dardize procedures for smoother and more effective implementation. This July 2012, in what could be a big leap of faith, the diocese will im-plement centralization, ad experimen-tum, for three months prior to its final implementation. Kudos to the time and effort spent by the Oeconomus to come up with various models for the clergy to choose the option which best suits the Diocese. On top of it is the firm resolve and leadership of the Bishop to

rally the clergy of Pasig to support centralization/ stan-dardization. This model will subsidize poor parishes and ministries and allow-ance of the clergy while promoting the spirit of stewardship. Simultaneous with strengthening the organizational structure is the focus on clergy and lay formation through train-ing, seminars, formation, and renewal. Further studies are made available to clergy to equip them with knowledge and expertise in their roles as parochial directors or administrators in parishes. His other priority concern is the wel-fare of the clergy and diocesan employ-ees. To address this, a cooperative was created while health and pension plans for clergy are being worked out. What is next in the agenda? It is the close monitoring of the centralization/ standardization ad experimentum and the smooth transition to a final imple-mentation. Results will be reviewed and assessed, hoping that, guided by the diocesan vision, we may all work together for the realization of a sys-tem that will best serve God and our people.

Holy, Holy, Holy Lord God of hosts (Sanctus) - The mystery of faith. (Memorial Acclamation) November - Lord, I am not worthy that you should enter under my roof, but only say the word and my soul shall be healed. (Invitation to Communion)

The English translation of the Roman Missal that the faithful has been ac-customed to for almost 40 years used the Holy See’s 1969 Instruction on how translations are to be done.

It favored sense translation (Comme le prevoit). The new English transla-tion that is being implemented gradually in the Philippines followed the 1971 Instruction (Liturgiam authenticam) which favored literal transla-tion. Although the two differ in their methods of translation, they have the same doctrinal content. As the worshipping community gets accustomed to the changes, it will be more able to participate actively and consciously in the Eucharistic celebration. This kind of involvement in the Holy Mass is what the Sec-ond Vatican Council desires from the faithful who “should not be there as strangers or silent spectators” as expressed in Article 48 of the Constitu-tion on the Sacred Liturgy. This same document states: “Mother Church desires that all faithful should be led to that full, conscious, and active participation in liturgical celebrations which is demanded by the very na-ture of the liturgy, and to which the Christian people... have a right and obligation by reason of their baptism” (14).*International Commission on English in the Liturgy

What’s new about the New Roman Missal? The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP), dur-

ing its annual meeting in January 2011, voted for the adoption of ICEL’s* New English Translation of the Roman Missal in toto. This new translation will be implemented throughout the Philippines on the First Sunday of Advent 2012. To prepare both clergy and the lay faithful for this new development, the Diocese of Pasig started the gradual implementation of the changes last June in all its parishes. The move aims to accustom the assembly to the new responses and acclamations when the full implementation comes on December 2 this year. The program of gradual implementation of changes in the different parts of the Mass in English is as follows: June - And with your spirit (Response to “The Lord be with you” in the Greeting, Gospel, Preface, and Final Blessing); July - I confess… through my fault, through my fault, through my most grievous fault (Penitential Act); August - Glory to God in the highest and on earth peace to people of good will (Gloria); September - I believe in God… he descended into hell… and is seated at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from there he will come to judge the living and the dead (Apostles’ Creed); October - (Presider) : Pray , brethren, that my sacrifice and yours (Prayer over the Gifts) - It is right and just. (Response to “Let us give thanks to the Lord our God in the Eucharistic Prayer)

TAGUIG CITY - “St. Ig-natius of Loyola, with his

new and dynamic conception of the religious life, has left an imprint on the Church unparal-leled in modern times.” Last 31st of July, the small Parish in Ususan, Taguig City rejoiced as it celebrated the feast day of its beloved pa-tron, St. Ignatius of Loyola. To complement the festive air, the altar was adorned with white and yel-low orchids and Malaysian mums. The novena masses were held from July 22 to 30, sponsored by the different parish organizations and parishioners. On the 29th of July, the annual Fun Run was held after the 6:00 a.m. Mass joined mostly by the youth of the barangay. This was organized by the Knights of Columbus. During the bisperas, a solemn procession was held. It was rainy that afternoon but even that did not prevent the devoted parishioners from joining this act of religious obser-vance. On the feast day, Holy Mass was cel-ebrated in the morning. This was fol-lowed by a festive caracol in which the patron was danced in an andas. In the traditional pasubo, people stood on their

roofs to give off food to those joining the procession. A mass was also held for the students and teachers of St. Ig-natius of Loyola School. At 6:00 p.m., the Solemn Mass was presided by His Excellency, Most Reverend Mylo Hu-bert C. Vergara, D.D., Bishop of Pasig. This was concelebrated by the parish priest, Rev. Fr. Marcelino S. Prudente, together with Rev. Fr. Anwar Mari Adona and Rev. Fr. Daniel Estacio. One of the highlights of the parish activities was the exposure of a relic of Saint Ignatius, a shard from his bones, which was venerated after each novena mass. Indeed, the celebrations were simple yet it still reminded the faithful of St. Ignatius’ teaching that all must be done “ad maiorem Dei gloriam”, “for the greater glory of God”.

Mylo Hubert C. Vergara, ang pangunahing tagapagsalita, ay nagbigay ng maliwanag na pag-unawa sa paksang “Celebrating the Year of Faith - A Call to Deepen our Faith in God who Loves Us.” “The Door of Faith is always open for us, ushering us into the life of com-munion with God and offering entry into His church. It is possible to cross that threshold when the word of God is proclaimed and the heat allows itself to be shaped by transforming grace,” saad sa ang unang pangungusap sa do-kumento ng Papa.

pagkaka iba .” “By Faith the disciples formed the first community gathered around the teaching of the apostles, in prayer, and in the celebration of the Eucharist, holding their possessions in common so as to meet the needs of the breth-ren.” “A true faith is when we can be in-struments of building a community where differences should not be a block. The nature is unity in diversity,” ayon sa Obispo. “Our uniqueness and distinctness are gifts to share so that the community will prosper. Differ-ences become a venue for what we call ‘synergy’, meaning we orchestrate our energy,” dagdag pa niya.

PASIG CITY - The Jubilee Year was solemnly opened by Pasig Bishop Mylo Hubert C. Vergara last June 29, 2012, mark-ing the centennial of Pasig Catholic College (PCC) with the opening of the Holy Door in the Immaculate Conception Ca-thedral Parish with the Theme “Ablaze in Mission”. Bishop Mylo said, “The Holy Door represents Christ, the Savior, Shepherd and Teacher. He said of Himself, ‘I am the door. Whoever enters through me will be saved...’” (John 10:9) PCC President Msgr. Gerardo O. Santos read the documents from the Apostolic Penitentiary while the Bish-op of Pasig proclaimed the Jubilee. Then, the Jubilee Door was blessed by Bishop Mylo. Bishop Mylo had stricken the door three times with a hammer while Msgr. Gerry and a student representative as-sisted in opening the Jubilee Door. The Bishop invited the congregation to en-ter and celebrate the Holy Eucharist. “The significance of the designated Holy Door of a Cathedral during a Jubilee Year gives pilgrims a plenary indulgence. A manifestation of God’s compassion and justice through the re-mission of temporal punishment grant-ed by the Church,” the Bishop said in his homily. He further expounded, “Our Jubilee Door is a door of faith. As we ap-proach the Year of Faith this coming October, Pope Benedict XVI tells us, ‘The door of faith (Acts 14:27) is al-ways open for us, ushering us into the life of communion with God and offer-ing entry into his Church... We pray that our Jubilee Door of faith may em-power each of us in PCC to a life of communion with God and others; that our faith, nourished by the Catholic education that has been transmitted, received and lived, be seen in us as we strive to be men and women of com-munion for God and for others.” The Bishop explained that the Jubilee Door is a door of hope as Pope Bene-dict says, “To come to know God, a

true God means to receive hope.” “We believe that our Jubilee Door of hope will enable each of us in PCC to personally encounter and know Jesus (Christ, the person of hope) deeply as St. Paul did,” the Bishop encouraged. “May these words inspire all of us here in PCC to share the Gospel of hope we have received in whatever way and in whatever circumstance, knowing that Jesus is the hope we proclaim and we are called to witness.” Finally, the Bishop mentioned the Ju-bilee door as a door of love. “As our door, Jesus does not only knows each of us very well as a brother and friend but also makes us know him in his word and deeds so that we will never wander off because of sin. As our door, he protects us from people who will lead us to sin... As door, he lays down his life for us as we expe-rience suffering and death so that we may receive eternal life.” “I am sure that celebrating this cen-tennial has been a blessed opportunity to thank God for the many people in PCC who have shown and shared love with us. We pray that this love bear fruit in our homes and communities, in our vocation and profession, and in the little details of life where we show acts of love. In the words of Blessed Theresa of Calcutta, ‘Few of us can do great things, but all of us can do small things with great love.’” “Let us pray that aside from the merits of the indulgence we receive, we become men and women of Faith, Hope and Love fed by the Father and empowered by the Holy Spirit, ablaze in mission to proclaim Jesus Christ in word and witness.” Msgr. Gerry read the decree from the Apostolic Penitentiary about the grant-ing of Plenary Indulgence and Bishop Mylo imparted the Apostolic Blessing.

PASIG CITY - The Immacu-late Conception Cathedral Parish Pastoral Council (ICC-PPC) recently staged a “Hope in a Bowl” fund raising proj-ect last July 14, 2012 at the Pasig Catholic College (PCC) grounds. The activity hoped to raise money for the land-scaping of the dilapidated Ca-thedral garden which in turn will benefit the mass goers who often stay out because of the overflowing parishioners hearing mass inside the Cathe-dral during Sunday Masses.

Pasig Bishop Huber C. Ver-gara graced the occasion. Ways & Means Commission Coordinator of the PPC Kit Ja-vier and the PPC Core Group featured a musical concert by the Sound Salad professional band mixed with a stand-up comedy act. The Society of Saint Vincent d’ Paul (SSVP) Youth Ministry likewise per-formed a very energetic dance number. PPC Lay Coordinator Bro. Randy Alvez welcomed the officers and members of the

ICC ministries, organizations, sub-parishes, and guests as he expressed his fervent hope, “I now ask our Good Lord to bless all of you a thousandfold for your generosity and kind-ness.” “The concerted effort of the ICC-PPC Commissions and the willing cooperation of our Ministries, Organizations and Sub-Parishes were the winning factors that led to the success of our fund raising project,” Sis. Emmie Jabson observed.

August - September 2012

“Go and make disciples… (Mt. 28:19). We look forward

with gratitude and joy to March 16, 2021, the fifth centenary of the com-ing of Christianity to our beloved land. We remember with thanksgiving the first Mass celebrated in Limasawa Island on Easter Sunday March 31 that same blessed year. We remember the baptism of Rajah Humabon who was given his Christian name Carlos and his wife Hara Amihan who was bap-tized Juana in 1521. Our eyes gaze on the Santo Niño de Cebu, the oldest re-ligious icon in the Philippines, gift of Ferdinand Magellan to the first Filipi-no Catholics that same year. Indeed the year 2021 will be a year of great jubilee for the Church in the Philippines. We shall therefore embark on a nine-year spiritual journey that will culmi-nate with the great jubilee of 2021. It is a grace-filled event of blessings for the Church starting October 21, 2012 until March 16, 2021. How opportune indeed that on Octo-ber 21 this year, the Holy Father Pope Benedict XVI will add another Filipino to the canon of saints of the Church, our very own Visayan proto-martyr Pe-dro Calungsod who gave his life for the faith on the morning of April 2, 1672 in Guam. The canonization of Pedro Calungsod will take place under the brilliant light of the fiftieth anniversary of the open-ing of the Second Vatican Council, the twentieth year of the publication of the Catechism of the Catholic Church, and the declaration of the Year of Faith from October 11, 2012 until November 24, 2013 by the Holy Father. The XIII Or-dinary General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops with the theme “The New Evangelization for the Transmission of the Christian Faith” will take place in Rome from October 7 to 28 this year. Faith and evangelization All these events happening this year are bound together by the themes of “faith” and “evangelization”. Evange-lization indicates proclamation, trans-

Live Christ, Share ChristLooking forward to our 500th

CBCP Pastoral Statement on the Era of the New Evangelizationmission and witnessing to the Gospel given to humanity by our Lord Jesus Christ and the opening up of people’s lives, society, culture and history to the Person of Jesus Christ and to His living community, the Church. This “New Evangelization” is primar-ily addressed to those who have drifted from the Faith and from the Church in traditionally Catholic countries, espe-cially in the West. What we are being called to do by this task of “New Evangelization” in Asia is to consider anew “the new methods and means for transmitting the Good News” more effectively to our people. We are challenged anew to foster in the Church in our country a renewed com-mitment and enthusiasm in living out the Gospel in all the diverse areas of our lives, in “real-life practice”, chal-lenged anew to become more and more

authentic witnesses of our faith, espe-cially to our Asian neighbors as a fruit of our intensified intimacy with the Lord. What will this era of new evangeli-zation for the Philippines consist of? The task stands on four pillars: First, fostering and fulfilling the “missio ad gentes”, as a special voca-tion of the Church in our country, ef-fectively involving our laypeople, our “Christifideles” brothers and sisters; our priests and seminarians; men and women in consecrated life. Secondly, “bringing Good News to the poor.” Again and again, Filipino Catholics coming together to discern priorities, have seen that the Church

here must become genuinely “a Church for and with the poor.” Thirdly, reaching out to those among us whose faith-life has been largely eroded and even lost due to the sur-rounding confusion, moral relativ-ism, doubt, and agnosticism; reaching out tothose who have drifted from the Faith and the Church and have joined other religious sects. Lastly, awakening or reawakening in faith, forming and animating in Chris-tian life our young people and youth sector groups in both urban and rural settings. A nine-year journey for the New Evangelization has already been chart-ed climaxing with the Jubilee Year 2021: Integral Faith Formation (2013); the Laity (2014); the Poor (2015); the Eucharist and of the Family (2016); the Parish as a Communion of Communi-ties (2017); the Clergy and Religious (2018); the Youth (2019); Ecumenism and Inter-Religious Dialogue (2020); Missio ad gentes (2021). These are the nine pastoral priorities of the Church in the Philippines. In the time before us, we will focus on these dimensions of faith, evangeliza-tion and discipleship one by one. And it is most propitious that as we received the faith 500 years ago, so with the

we envision to become a truly sending Church. In the face of a secularism which in some parts of our present world has it-self become a kind of a “dominant re-ligion”, in the face of the reality of bil-lions who live in our time and who have not truly encountered Jesus Christ nor heard of His Gospel, how challenged we are, how challenged we must be, to enter into the endeavor of the “New Evangelization!” We for whom Jesus has been and is truly the Way, the Truth and the Life, how can we not want and long and share Him with brothers and sisters around us who are yet to know and love Him, who are yet to receive the fullness of Life for which we have all been created, and without which their hearts will be ever restless – un-til they find Jesus and His heart which awaits them? May our Lady, Mary Mother of Our Lord, lead us all in our longing and la-bors to bring her son Jesus Christ into our time and our world, our Emmanuel – our God who remains with us now and yet whose coming again in glory we await. The countdown is on for the canonization of Blessed Pedro

Calungsod as the second Filipino saint on October 21, 2012 at the Vati-can. The National Commission is work-ing in collaboration with the Episcopal Commission on Mission in the nation-wide catechesis and promotion of the cause of Blessed Pedro Calungsod. It is composed of the following: Arch-bishop Jose Palma, D.D., Chairman; Archbishop Luis Antonio Tagle, D.D., Co-chairman; Archbishop Socrates Villegas, Bishop Julito Cortes, Bishop Joel Baylon, Bishop Edwin dela Peña, Bishop Jesse Mercado, Precioso Can-tillas, Retired Chief Justice Hilario Da-vide Jr., members; and Amb. Henrietta de Villa, Secretary General. The commission has decided to hold a National Thanksgiving mass for the Canonization of Pedro Calungsod on November 30, 2012 at the Cebu South Road Properties. The mass will be pre-ceded by foot and fluvial processions. Part of the National Preparation for the Thanksgiving Mass will be a visit of the image of the soon-to-be Saint

Blessed Pedro Calungsod, 2nd Filipino Saint

Pedro Calungsod to Archdioceses and Dioceses all over the country dubbed “Duaw Nasud”, a Cebuano term that means “to visit different places.” The visit will start with activities in Manila particularly in Intramuros, which in 1672 basically was what Ma-nila was. Then the visit will go north to Vigan (Nueva Segovia). From there a motorcade of the image of San Pedro Calungsod will be organized to move down to Naga City (Nueva Caceres), making some pre-designated overnight stops in some archdioceses and dioces-es. After covering Luzon, the visit will proceed to the Visayas and Mindanao, before arriving in Cebu for the Nation-al Thanksgiving Mass celebration. Meanwhile, the Manila Archdioc-esan Catechetical Commission con-ducted a trainors’ training seminar for catechist coordinators, representatives from the accredited travel agencies for the canonization rites in Rome, and other Church leaders last May 21. A catechetical primer on the life, mar-tyrdom, and glorification of Blessed Pedro Calungsod was given by Msgr. Ildebrando Leyson, PC.

Who is Pedro Calungsod? According to the canonization bulle-tin dated July 15, (cf. http://cebuarch-diocese.org) Calungsod was a teenaged catechist who served at the Jesuit mis-sion in the Marianas from June 1668 until his death on April 2, 1672. He was known to have quickly adapt-ed to the Chamorro way of life and lan-guage so that he was an efficient guide to the priests, particularly Don Diego Luis de San Vitores, S.J. Pedro was the sole companion of Don San Vitores in the early morning of April 2, 1672 in the village of Tom-hon, when two natives killed them one after the other after San Vitores with Calungsod baptized the baby daughter of the Chieftain Mata’pang. Wikipedia on Pedro Calungsod nar-rates: “Witnesses claim that Calungsod could have escaped the attack, but did not want to leave San Vitores alone. He was hit in the chest by a spear and fell to the ground, then Hirao immediately charged towards him and finished him off with machete blow to the head. San Vitores absolved Calungsod before he too was killed.” Wikipedia reports that through Calungsod and San Vitores’ missionary efforts, many native Chamorros con-verted to Roman Catholicism. Calung-sod was beatified on 5 March 2000 by Blessed Pope John Paul II while

Blessed Diego Luis was beatified earlier last 6 October 1985. On 19 December 2011, the Holy See officially approved the miracle qualifying Calungsod for saint-hood by the Roman Catholic Church. The recognised miracle dates from 2002, when a Leyte woman who was pronounced clinically dead by ac-credited physicians two hours after a heart attack was revived when a doctor prayed for Calungsod’s inter-cession. Calungsod will be canonized by Pope

Benedict XVI on October 21, 2012, 25 years after Blessed Pope John Paul II canonized Lorenzo Ruiz, a calligrapher from Binondo, Manila who died for his faith in Nagasaki, Japan. Regarding Calungsod’s charitable works and virtuous deeds, Pope John Paul II declared: “... From his child-hood, Pedro Calungsod declared him-self unwaveringly for Christ and re-sponded generously to his call. Young people today can draw encouragement and strength from the example of Pe-dro, whose love of Jesus inspired him to devote his teenage years to teaching the faith as a lay catechist. Leaving family and friends behind, Pedro will-ingly accepted the challenge put to him by Fr. Diego de San Vitores to join him on the Mission to the Chamorros. In a spirit of faith, marked by strong Eu-charistic and Marian devotions, Pedro undertook the demanding work asked of him and bravely faced the many ob-stacles and difficulties he met. In the face of imminent danger, Pedro would not forsake Fr. Diego, but as a “good soldier of Christ” preferred to die at the missionary’s side.”

BEC ASSEMBLY, p. 1“Porta Fide”. “The ‘Year of Faith’ calls us to retrace the history of our faith,” Bishop Mylo explained, “Jesus’ obedience to his Father’s will; Mary’s faith amidst fear; the apostles’ faith as they detached from everything to follow Jesus; the disciples’ faith in building the commu-nity; the martyrs’ faith in forgiveness; men and women who consecrated their lives for the LORD show faith in obla-tion and generosity; men and women of all ages, whose names are written in the Book of Life (cf. Rev 7:9, 13:8) show their faith in service.”

According to Bishop Mylo, the “Year of Faith” will also be a good opportu-nity to intensify the witness of char-ity. He had challenged everybody by saying, “Once you give your total self, once you give your life… you become more fulfilled… that’s offering, that’s oblation, that’s generosity… that is FAITH IN ACTION!... You have faith if you continue to serve even when no one is present to praise you.” The assembly concluded with a Eu-charistic Celebration offered by Rev. Fr. Alvin Habab, BEC Spiritual Ad-viser of the Immaculate Conception Cathedral Parish.

10 DALOY Diocese of Pasig

August - September 2012

Last July 22, 2012, an NCR Youth Day for Life was held in Paco

Catholic School. It was dubbed “LIVE, LEARN, and LOVE” in re-sponse to the most challenging issue of today faced by the youth - the RH Bill. What is RH Bill? Do we really know the meaning of this or do we just know it only by its name? Most of us, espe-cially the youth, don’t have a deeper understanding of this issue. This is the reason why the National Capital Region Youth Coordinating Council headed by Bro. Peter Pardo, Youth Coordinator of

the Diocese of Parañaque, initiated an event called “An NCR Youth Day for Life”. This event was participated by 1,400 youth from the Archdiocese of Manila, Dioceses of Kalookan, Novaliches, Antipolo, Imus, Parañaque, Pasig, and Cubao, and the Apostolic Vicariates of Puerto Princesa, Taytay, and Palawan. From our very own Diocese of Pasig, His Excellency, Most Rev. Mylo Hu-bert C. Vergara, D.D., sent 130 youth delegates in the said occasion headed by our Youth Coordinator Ms. Rhea Lavilla, and Youth Director Rev. Fr. Joeffrey Brian V. Catuiran. Out of the names of each diocese, they formed an ancronym called “MaKN An Im-P3CT”. The event started with worship songs. Welcome remarks and introduction about the event were given by NCR Youth Coordinator Bro. Peter Pardo, and Fr. Jerome Cruz, Youth Director of NCR and Diocese of Kalookan. They invited several speakers to share their knowledge and views on the said issue. Dra. Angelita Aguirre, a profes-sor at UST FMS, discussed the Profes-sional Ethics in the current socio-eco-nomic concerns. She also talked about the medical aspect of the RH Bill. Leanne Rosal, a registered nurse and a pro-life advocate, shared her experi-ences on her profession and why she is against RH Bill. These taught her how

to value life more. The Regional Director of World Youth Alliance Asia Pacific, Renelyn Tan, explained why “RH Bill, bakit ‘di kita ma-take?” and Rep. Fatima Aliah Q. Dimaporo, a representative of 2nd District, Lanao del Norte, also shared her view against it. After lunch break, a skit entitled “Sa May Picket Line” was presented by the youth from the Diocese of Antipolo. Workships were held in the afternoon. Bro. Dani Villanueva, youth coordina-tor of the Diocese of Antipolo, initiated the workshop on LIVE; Sis. Roselle

Cortez, youth coordinator of the Diocese of Novali-ches, on LOVE; and Bro. Peter Capistrano, our very own youth leader from the Diocese of Pasig, on LEARN. After all the workshops, each one in the auditorium stood up and altogether tore to pieces a paper which on it was written the reasons why each one

was against the RH Bill. Every cried out, “Yes to God! No to RH Bill!” The Eucharistic celebration was pre-sided by Kalookan Bishop Deogracias Iñiguez and concelebrated by priests from different dioceses. In his homily, Bishop Iñiguez chal-lenged the youth on how to value, re-spect, and give life its primordial im-portance from conception to natural

death. As a servant youth leader and a nurse by profession, I strongly denounce and object the passage of this RH Bill. I join with all the youth of today and the next generation to be one in denounc-ing the negative effects of this bill. To-day’s youth uphold the teachings of the Catholic Church as we choose to value procreation and life and support and promote natural family planning. We also choose to LEARN in an educated society rooted on values. This RH Bill will open wide the doors of negative and destructive curiosity among us. We choose to LIVE in a society that ne-

gates the power of contraceptive men-tality that puts the dignity of human person and of the transmission of hu-man life and the capacity to love at risk which may undeniably include access to abortion. We choose to LOVE ourselves and

our neighbor by instilling respect and recognizing our dignity as human per-sons created in the image and likeness of God. I am a youth of God and I value the sanctity and beauty of life. Yes to God! Yes to life! No to RH bill!

Three days of learning, reflection, prayers, faith stories and fun out-

door activities are days that nobody will ever forget! Hundreds of young people, youth leaders, and active members from the different parishes of the Diocese of Pa-sig gathered together for the 1st BINHI Youth Camp. It was held last April 27 to 29, 2012 at Rancho Bueno, Rich Golden Shower Montessori Center, Antipolo City. This activity is one of the many ways that the youth can jour-ney with fellow youth and serve one another.

The camp’s theme was taken from the Gospel of Matthew, “But others fell on good ground and yielded a crop, some a hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty. He who has ears to hear, let him hear”. (Matthew 13:8) It is the vision of the Pasig Dioc-esan Youth Ministry organizers under the Directorship of Rev. Fr. Joeffrey Brian V. Catuiran, J.C.L. and headed by Ms. Rhea Lavilla, Youth Coordina-tor, that every camper’s heart will gra-ciously receive the seed of Faith, Hope, Love, and renewed spirit in the ser-vice for others. Furthermore, it is the wish of everyone that after the camp, each camper will become a BINHI to their fellow youth, and that seed will grow and bear fruits in the family, the Church, and society. The camp was designed with outdoor activities, talks and reflections about experiences in Amazing Race and Lakbay Kawan. The campers found

themselves overcoming series of team building activities: climbing over the wooden wall, making their way with no verbal communication, and reach-ing the finish line by paddle in order to traverse the sandy soil. Things got chaotic and exciting because they were wet as they took the challenges. To-ward the end of the first day, the camp-ers had a bonfire and showed off their talents of singing, dancing, and acting during Gabi ng K (fellowship night). At the last day of the camp, the par-ticipants went back to their respec-tive vicariates, did the morning praise,

and ended up planting seeds symbolizing the Word of God which the Sower planted in ev-ery Christian’s heart. This challenged each camper after having planted the seed in his or her life to let this grow by living the Word of God. The camp was concluded with a Eu-charistic celebration presided by His Excellency, Most. Rev.

Mylo Hubert C. Vergara and concel-ebrated by Rev. Fr. Joeffrey Brian V. Catuiran. The bishop challenged the youth to be a seed that should grow in one’s own setting, be it in the home, at school or parish, and in the community. There was also a special moment of dialogue with His Excellency and the youth where the Bishop expressed his special concern for them and expressed his hope that all the parishes would send their delegates in the next youth event. The challenge for me, I think, is that I am being asked to nourish this seed “BINHI” so that when it grows within my heart, I can readily give and share it with other young people at home, in school, and with the community. Tru-ly, it was a memorable experience - a BINHI experience that was planted in my life as a youth.
