FIRST RECIPIENT OF LOANAWARDED CHEQUEThe first recipient of a low-interest loan fromNewport City Council was awarded his chequeat the official launch of two new business support

programmes in late last year.

Gary Howells of Pay 123 Ltd is the first business

in the city to successfully apply for, and be awarded,

a loan. Pay 123 will benefit from a 1,000 business

loan from the council which will contribute towards

the purchase of IT equipment, office equipment and a

custom designed website.

He has also been awarded a Newport City

Council UK Steel Enterprise start up grant of 500

towards the companys first years rent of premises.

Gary Howells is an experienced businessman

having run his own haulage business. More recently,

he has worked in his daughters business, PLS Solutions

(now part of Solsbury Solutions), which provides

recruitment, training, HR services and equipment

supplies to haulage contractors.

Speaking about his new business he said: PLS

was experiencing considerable demand for PAYE

support services but because no business in Wales

offered this service specifically for the haulage

industry, PLS had to outsource the work to a company

in the south east of England.

Seeing an opportunity I decided to set up my

own business providing the service from Newport.

Pay 123 Ltd, offers a web-based service, which aims

to be simple to use for contractors.

Having financial assistance from the council will

help me establish and grow the business.

The citys Mayor, Councillor Cliff Suller, officially

launched the councils new business grants and low

interest business loans at an event in Malpas Court.

Loans of up to 10,000 are available to business

that have been established in the city for more than 12

months while loans of up to 1,000 are available to

pre start ups and new businesses under 12 months.

The council is also able to offer business grants

thanks to a partnership with UK Steel Enterprise

(UKSE). The funding from Tata subsidiary UKSE, can

be used as grants for start-up businesses and existing

businesses under 12 months old.

Andrew Morris, UKSE area manager in Wales,

said: UK Steel Enterprise is pleased to be supporting

Newport City Council in its work with new and young

businesses, bringing employment and prosperity to

the area. We look forward to working with both

the council and businesses to help the economic

regeneration of the city.

Councillor John Richards, cabinet member for

regeneration and development, said: I am delighted

that we have been able to introduce low-interest

loans for both established and new businesses in the

city and that thanks to our partnership with UK SteelEnterprise we can give grant support to new ventures

or give a helping hand to fledgling companies.

The council is doing what it can to help

businesses but we are also in a difficult financial

climate so we are grateful to UKSE for their support in

this important area. Successful companies do not just

benefit those who run them and their employees but

also the wider local economy.

Vanilla Spice was voted Indian Restaurant of theYear by Voice readers and the 2013 V Awards.We caught up with Manager Nazim Ali to talk to us

about his award winning family run restaurant.

We were absolutely ecstatic when we heard

the news that we had won the V Award, my staff and

I would like to say a great big thank you to everyonewho voted for us to win, said Naz.

Its such an achievement for us, as weve only

been open for a short time, were very glad that

people love our restaurant, especially our great tasting

food.

One of the main goals that the Ali family have

set out to accomplish when they first opened Vanilla

Spice last summer was to offer people an authentic

taste of the food they love.

This great feat is achieved by the expert head

chef Afaur Rahman, who specialises in original curry

recipes that are made the exact same way they are

created back home in Bangladesh.

ANewport optician is celebrating 25years in business this month.

Specsavers was originally openedon Newports High Street in 1988 byLeighton Griffiths, who left the store only 18months ago.

Since 2003 Jason Williams has ownedand operated the Specsavers store inNewport, however, he has not always heldthe role of store director.

Back in 1991 he started his career as aSpecsavers employee and worked under themanagement of Mr Griffiths for 12 years.

It was in 2003 that Jason became apartner with Mr Griffiths. When Mr Griffithsleft the business last year, both CraigMacKenzie and Andrew Bowers came onboard and joined Mr Williams as joint storedirectors.

The store has grown significantly overthe last 25 years. When the opticians first

opened its doors the workforce consisted ofone optometrist and five support staff.

Now the Newport site has six consultingrooms, six optometrists, one full-time contactlens optician, and 35 support staff, as well asthe three store directors.

Jason said: We are very proud as a teamto be celebrating 25 years in business and Iam delighted to say that I have been here for22 of them.

It is a great achievement for the store andwe would like to take this opportunity to saya huge thank you to our customers who haveremained loyal.

They have been extremely supportive of

our store for many years, and without themwe wouldnt be here and celebrating such ahuge milestone.

It has been a fantastic number of yearswith various staff passing through the doorsover that time.

I am delighted to now be running boththis site and the Specsavers store in SpyttyRetail Park along with Craig and Andrew.

We are looking forward to another25 years with excitement and enthusiasm.We have remained committed to NewportCity Centre, and we are looking forwardto the completion of all the new businessdevelopments in the coming years.

Over the last 25 years the store hashelped to train many employees from thelocal area to receive nationally recognisedqualifications.

At present there are nine employeescurrently in training for further qualifications

in optics, such as becoming a fully trainedoptometrist, contact lens optician, dispensingoptician, audiologist and optical assistant.

The Newport store has always investedheavily in the latest technology in order tokeep the business a high street leader inoptics.

Currently the practice is working closelywith the NHS in Wales to offer someenhanced services, previously dealt with byGPs and hospitals, in order to reduce waitingtimes for patients and costs to the NHS.

The store is always keen to involve itself inthe community and regularly raises money forcharities through sponsorship of local sports

clubs, as well as having good linkswith Newport County FC as itsofficial community partner and theNewport Gwent Dragons throughsponsorship of the RaboDirectPro12 referees.

Specsavers, Newport, ispleased to have gone fromstrength-to-strength over the last 25years, with the store accumulatinga variety of awards along the way.

Big wins include BestDispensing Practice in the Region,and Best Practice for CommunityInvolvement.

Newport Specsavers is alsoone of a handful of stores in SouthWales that has been recognised asa Dispensing Centre of Excellenceand carries the Investors in Peoplestatus.
