Take Away (IDMS - January 2014)• The overwhelming majority of comments received regarding nautical charts in PDF format were positive, none was negative.

The most common comment was to provide PDF nautical charts permanently.

• Regarding RNC charts, a large number of people reported that chart KAP file was missing the image data (being displayed as all black). FADS took care of this problem.

• Regarding Chart 1, a great deal of positive feedback on this product. was received such as: 1) The app works fine and is actually better than the chartplotter in many ways because it is on a larger screen that is more readable, and touchscreen with easier menus on the tablet. We have told others about it too and they have tried it and liked it. 2) MyNOAAcharts is the tool of my choice (I don't have a chart plotter,) for on-the-water use. It provides all the advantages of PDF Charts in a tool suitable for planning and navigation together with printed charts. 3) This is a great app. Because internal storage is so limited on most tablets it is hard to store charts. Please update the app settings to allow storage of all charts to the external sd card.

• Regarding general chart inquiries, NSD assisted many users to solve problems such as: 1) I am looking for information regarding a shipwreck off the beach at Hallock Landing in Rocky Point, NY 11778. 2) My inquiry relates to the low water levels of The Great Lakes. How often do you update the depths?, or do you just simply operate off of historical levels?. 3) In what year did US Chart datum change from MLW to MLLW?

• Graphics and Summary of Changes to SeaGirt Marine Terminal in Baltimore Harbor. were provided to show the widened areas and the resultant overlaps with federally mandated anchorages.

• Worked to make training chart images more accessible from webpage.

• Assisted USCG AUX to find and order paper training charts.

• CLIA is excited to work with us and have asked us to provide them with a few analysis questions to gauge their members' interest in various Coast Survey Topics.

• Users would like an overlay of LTM changes; crowd sourcing also desirable.

• Sandy Hook Pilots inquired about positioning a met station at their pilot station (internet, redundant power, hardened structure, etc. available on site). Nav. Manager will forward inquiry to NWS.

• December grounding by Tug and Barge in Anchorage 22 resulted in a request for survey by USCG SF. Survey request submitted to Coast Survey for Anchorage 22 and 23.

• The interaction between the USACE, State and the Port is uncoordinated and in serious need of revision to come up with a multi year dredging plan and permitted placement of dredge spoil for beneficial use. Local sport fishing and environmental groups are very opposed to the option of unconfined dredge spoil placement in Calcasieu Lake.

J-2) Customer Requirements • Worked to get higher resolution version of chart 12354TR

posted. Used software from Ghani ( in house) to provide 300 and 400 dpi files which Meredith Westington will post to Historicals collection. A direct link from our web page to these charts in jpeg or pdf format seems warranted as they are difficult for customers to locate.

• - Power cable from Hempstead to New Rochelle is leaking oil. ORR interested in survey assistance to locate leak. – Nav. Manager spoke with LT Mike Davidson and Dr. Tom Weber at UNH regarding feasibility of detecting mineral oil in the water column for this leak. It might be possible, but has not been done before. The responsible Party has contracted a survey team to look for signs of damage to the cable. Nav. Manager suggested having them acquire water column data simultaneously.

• OCS is supporting the installation of a GPS CORS Station at the Bar Pilots station at SW Pass. The need for this is to support the now critical real time network that is the primary source in positioning in a rapidly changing and subsiding landscape.

• The Brunswick pilots reported the Sapelo lighthouse charted as abandoned is now watching. NSD is coordinating the Georgia DNR and USCG D7 to get this light published in the light list so it can accurately be charted. The is a navigation issue because its characteristics are some what similar to the Brunswick Light and could be mistaken by a mariner not familiar to this area.

• There is a concern that the chart #11547 for the Morehead city area reflects what the shoreline looks like now as a result of shoaling and movement of sand by the USACE dredging project in Morehead City approach channel. Person that boats often on coastal NC is willing to collaborate with the USPS in Morehead city to conduct depths surveys.

• - Mr. Erie contacted Nav. Manager requesting information on who has signed off on the safety/condition of the Staten Island Home Port Pier. The USN is planning to use this pier during the 2014 Fleet Week. Nav. Manager forwarded inquiry to USACE, who preformed the survey of the area following PTC Sandy. - Information was forwarded by NYC EDC.

• One person indicated that Drawdown is not a concern in his area, two others indicated that they had never looked at Drawdown before, and one indicated that Drawdown occurs in two areas in the James River during westerly wind events.

• Models suggested for forecasting drawdown are: ROMS/RTOFS/FVCOM model and CBOFS and a VIMS tidewatch model, for tropical ESTOFS and ETSS, psurge.

primary navigation tool, or used rarely, or that they are a mandatory backup.

• On how much to pay for POD charts, the answer was mixed, with statements such as between $12-14 per chart, or $30, or a lot less than the Litho.
