Sand, dust, heat and wind require special considerations when it comes to building a railway line in desert areas as they prevail in e.g. the MENA region. Regional peculiarities must be taken into account when designing equipment for the use in challenging environments. Therefore, voestalpine VAE has precisely analysed various desert conditions scientifically and adapted its turnout technology accordingly. Tests in compliance with MIL-STD 810 F, ASTM D 968-05 and adapted test methods according to DIN 52348 have resulted in sophisticated designs which provide top functionality of our turnout systems.
voestalpine VAE has developed several products that entirely meet the special demands of desert regions. Point machines with an electro-hydraulic working principle that do not require any lubrication serve to switch turnouts independently from types or gauges for urban and long-distance traffic. Fully encapsulated locks
with a revolutionary locking principle meet the highest requirements placed on reliability, minimum maintenance requirements, environmental compatibility and very long life cycles at considerably reduced costs. Sealed hydraulic force transmission systems replace mechanically actuated rods. The use of hollow steel bearers and special covers provides maximum protection for all components.
State-of-the-art high performance setting systems and end position detectors (all approved according to CENELEC 50126 and already registered at railway companies leading on an international scale) enable easiest and most economically efficient integration into all common interlocking systems. A minimal amount of moving components combined with the latest hydraulic technology fulfill your needs regarding reliability, availability, maintainability and safety (featuring IP 65).
Hazard alert systems for hot box, hot and flat wheel detection as well as wind measuring systems guarantee safe train operation. These products need to work safely in challenging climatic conditions, too. A customised design (specially covered and air conditioned) is required in order to reliably detect dangerous rolling stock.
Fixed infrastructure asset monitoring is especially important in regions where maintenance actions are hard to perform because of rapidly changing environmental conditions, vast dimensions of the area to be taken care of and where highest availability of the track is a must. Thanks to our monitoring systems peculiarities can be eliminated even before malfunctions occur so that a reliable operation can be achieved.
Apart from components that are necessary for the operation of turnouts it is the turnouts themselves that need to be fit for operation in challenging environments. Greasing of various parts as it is common all over the world is an absolute “no go” in sandy and windy areas. Consequently, the smooth operation of switch assemblies and movable frogs need to be established differently. The use of roller systems and coated sliding chairs is one key to success. Another one is the geometric optimisation of components and assemblies according to scientific findings regarding life time tests simulating desert climatic conditions. Increased wear and tear due to added abrasion caused by sand will be compensated by developments that result from kinematic gauge optimisation. The utilisation of thicker switch blades and correspondingly bended stock rails enable considerably extended life cycles of turnouts. Specially hardened rail profiles and setting components subjected to surface treatment will sustainably resist the challenges of harsh environmental conditions.
