Getting started

We are overwhelmed by your fantastic engagement and insightful forum discussions! Your

passion for the topic shows after just a few days into the course, and it also underlines

the power of peer learning. Many of you have presented yourselves in the forum, and we

want to encourage you all to fill in theWelcome survey as well; it will help us develop and

adjust the course. We also want to remind you of our Hangout on Friday- a live, broadcast

Q & A session, where we discuss issues collected from the forums with course professors.

Thank you for all your positive feedback, but also for pointing out glitches and errors in the

course material; your help and patience is much appreciated. Here are some updates:

• Last week a new report on the planetaryboundaries was released, making some

of the answer alternatives in theModule 1 Quiz, question 2,outdated.Nowfour of the

nine planetary boundaries have been crossed. The names and definitions of

the boundaries have also been slightly altered, read more about ithere. As wecannot change an ongoing quiz, you will be compensated course credit-wise for this

question.

• Some of the links in the compendium did not work, this has been corrected now

and new updated versions are available. However, links willinevitably fail after a

while and please let us know when they do.

• More on the compendium: we have two versions: one high and one low resolution.

We have received feedback that the compendium did not open: it may be due to

bandwidth limitations. Try in such case to open the low bandwidth version.

Take care and keep up the good work!

The GtE course explores greening the economy on four levels - individual, business, city,

and national. We look at the relationships between these levels and provide practical

examples of the complexities and solutions across the levels. Our focus is on Scandinavia

as it is a pioneering place in terms of advancing sustainability issues and combating climate

change, and thus a good starting point.

The course consists of five modules - one module per week. After an introductory week, the

following four modules focus each on a different level in relation to greening the economy.

OK, now it’s time for you to start exploring the course. We encourage you to read the 'The

The GtE course in 5 minutes (or less)

Here you find a brief introduction to the course and how to find your way around

its contents. Please allow yourself a few minutes to read through this text, as it

will give you an understanding of the course structure and its contents. If you

are new to Coursera, you may want to watchthis short video (starting from 1:30)

for a tour of a typical Coursera course.

This course consists of five modules each lasting one week. There are learningactivities provided in every module.

Videos. Under ‘Lecture videos’ you find two types of videos: lectures and interviews,

both being part of the learning material. Each week we publish a new set of module

videos. In total, there is about 40 videos in the course. At the end of each module we

have our own reality show called ‘Meet the Parkers’; a sort of ‘reality check’ where a

Swedish family gives their personal reflections on issues that we discuss in the course.

Forums. With each lecture there is a link to the forum for that module. Forums are a

great way of exchanging ideas and information, and they are the main way ofcommunicating in the course. You can also reach the forums via the ‘Forums’ tab in the

navigation bar.

Compendium. The course has an e-compendium covering all five modules - a

condensed, text-based version of the video material. It's divided into chapters - one

chapter for each module. You can use it as a good complement to the videos: here you

can also find a lot of links to additional relevant sources!

Quizzes. For every module, there is also a quiz. You find them via the Quizzes tab in

the Navigation bar. A new quiz will be available at the beginning of the module. You can

find more information about the quizzes in ‘Schedule’ and in ‘Course details’.

Assignment. The course has one main assignment called “Greener Products,

Businesses and Cities”. It is a peer-reviewed assignment, and you will grade three of

your fellow students’ work at the end of the course. The assignment is launched in the

beginning of module two and runs throughout the course. The nine last days of the

course are allocated for peer assessment. There is also a special forum designated for

the assignment.

Hangouts. Our community teaching assistants, or CTAs, will also select a number of

questions and issues in the forums and ask our senior researchers to respond and

discuss these questions. This will take place as a Google Hangout on Air, so that you

can watch it live in real time. If you cannot make it during that time, the Hangouts will be

recorded and available afterwards via our YouTube channel.

Contact. We encourage you to use the different forums for most forms of

communication. However, if you need to get in contact with our staff directly, feel free to

email [email protected]. We check the mail every weekday.

Introduction

We are very pleased to welcome you to our course on: 'Greening the Economy: Lessons

from Scandinavia'. We hope that you will enjoy studying this course and that you find it

interesting and useful. In this MOOC we try to give a condensed overview of an important

and challenging issue, by presenting a number of approaches to tackle environmental and

social challenges in an economically viable way here in Scandinavia.

In this introduction you can find a brief overview of this MOOC; it's content, where to find it,

and a few words on how to study this course.

Where to start

We suggest that you begin by reading this page, and then spend some time browsing the

course using the navigation bar to your left.In theSyllabus you will find more detailed

information about the course contents, what to study and what you are expected to

learn in the course and its different modules (learning outcomes). Further down in the

navigation bar you find theSchedule for the course. Check out theCourse details page

where you can find detailed and more in-depth information about how to study the

course and about the different course components. You also find info about how

thegrading works and allannouncements in the course are collected here as well.

When you've got your self acquainted with the structure of the course, we recommend you

to start looking at the first video lectures - they will give you a good introduction to the

course and the subject of Greening the Economy.

If you've never studied a MOOC at Coursera before, you may want to have a look

at Coursera's Help Center (here) to get a bit more familiar with the concept, how Coursera

works and where to get help.

The course at a glance

This course consists of five week-long modules, each module covering new aspects of and

perspectives on greening the economy. We're looking at different strategies

and approaches to green the economy at four levels: individual, business, city and at a

national level.

Each module has a number oflecture videos and interviews highlighting different

topics. In each module there is also aquiz, testing your knowledge and understanding

of the topics covered in the module. We have also developed acompendium, which is

based on the above-mentioned lectures and interviews, collecting information from all

five modules in one place and providing you with a complementary way to access the

information.

Page 7: Vocabulary Greening the Economy

We are convinced that communication and interaction between students in a global

classroom like this one leads to a greater understanding of complex issues like these.

We therefore encourageforum discussions, and we have a peer assessed

assignment (both graded activities). At the end of each week we also have

live Hangouts where our professors answers questions raised in the forums.

Please be patient with us - it's our first MOOC so there are likely several things that are

missing and not working. You can use theCourse material error forumto report bugs and

errors, and we'll try to fix it as soon as possible.

Good luck studying the course, we hope you enjoy it!

 About the course

This course explores greening the economy on four levels – individual, business, city, and

national. We look at the relationships between these levels and provide practical examples

of the complexities and solutions across the levels. Scandinavia, a pioneering place

advancing sustainability and combating climate change, is a unique starting point for

learning about greening the economy. We will learn from many initiatives attempted in

Scandinavia since the 1970s, which are all potentially helpful and useful for other countries

and contexts.

The course runs for five weeks and consists of five modules; one module per week. After

an introductory week, the following four modules focus on a different level in relation to

greening the economy.

Overall learning outcomes

At the end of this course you should have an understanding of the concept of green

economy, and know of and understand a number of strategic, administrative, technical and

political tools that can be used in the process of greening an economy. Moreover, you

should be aware of the challenge of transforming an economy in this direction, but also the

potential gains that can be made when doing so.

In addition to theseoverall expected learning outcomes, you will find a brief description

of each module to guide you in your learning efforts.

The course week by week

Module 1. Introduction: what is a green economy and why is it important?

We start the course by looking at the key issues that a green economy seeks to address

and the underlying concepts and definitions of a greener economy. In this week we will

describe problems arising from the interaction of the economy and the environment; we will

state some of the aims of greening the economy and look into the multitude of definitions;

we will use tools to measure and assess a green economy; and we will discuss concepts

and indicators related to the green economy.

progress towards a green economy. This week offers an increased understanding of

patterns and levels of consumption; we will look at the drivers and theories of consumer

behaviour and the limitations of working with consumer choice in isolation (e.g. rebound

effect); and develop an understanding of how to measure the impact of consumption (e.g.

carbon footprint).
