Skogskyrkogården (The Woodland Cemetery) in Enskede in southern Stockholm was created between 1917 and 1940 by architects Gunnar Asplund and Sigurd Lewerentz. On a hillside overgrown with pine trees, they shaped a sacred landscape with several small chapels integrated into their natural surroundings. The architects designed the whole site, from the landscape down to the smallest lamp. The design is shaped around the experience of mourners, with a focus on the landscape and the capacity of nature to reconcile mourners with their grief.
Today Skogskyrkogården is one of Sweden’s biggest cemeteries, with around 100,000 graves. It includes an operating crematorium, five funeral chapels and an outdoor ceremony site. Every year more than 2,000 funeral ceremonies are held at Skogskyrkogården.
Visit at any timeThe main entrance is always open. The other entrances are open to pedestrians and cyclists 24 hours a day. Please show great consideration for any funeral ceremonies and burials in progress. The five funeral chapels are only accessible for ceremonies and by guided tour.
Getting hereTake the metro green line in the direction of Farsta strand and get off at Skogskyrkogården station. At weekends, bus 183 departs from here forboarding and disembarkation at Skogskyrkogården.
