The Longest-Running Wine Festival on the East Coast!

Welcome to the 40th Annual Virginia Wine Festival

The Atlantic Seaboard Wine Association (ASWA), a 501 (c)5, is the spon-sor of the 40th annual

Virginia Wine Festival and one of the oldest wine organizations on the East Coast. Established in 1973 as the Vinifera Wine Growers Associa-tion, ASWA was the first wine trade association in the Commonwealth of Virginia and one of the first on the east coast. The inaugural Virginia Wine Festival was held in fall 1976 in nearby Middleburg, at which some 800 people savored wine tastings from the state’s only three exist-ing wineries and dined on boxed lunches.

The festival was later moved to Great Meadow, where it remained for several years. It moved away and is now back. As you enjoy the festival this weekend, with its many wine and food offerings, you will see why it has now returned to beautiful Great Meadow.

Since its inception, ASWA has

actively contributed to the public’s wine education and appreciation, as well as the promotion of an Ameri-can wine culture throughout the 17 states of the Atlantic Seaboard. ASWA was an early supporter of planting world-class vinifera grape varieties in the Eastern US. It orga-nized the first wine competition in the state of Virginia and continues that tradition at the regional level.

Today, ASWA is a national wine trade association that works with state and federal legislatures to ad-

dress issues that challenge the US wine industry, as well as the Con-gressional Wine Caucus to highlight quality wines from the Atlantic re-gion. ASWA’s activities, as well as the wine competition winners, can all be viewed at the Association’s website: www.aswawines.org.

The Virginia wine industry has come a long way since the early 1970s. The number of wineries and the quality of their wines has earned national and international recogni-tion. This weekend’s event offers wine lovers the opportunity to keep pace with progress, tasting from many old and new boutique wineries and their latest vintages. Take this one-stop shopping opportunity to experience wine and food pairing events, to stock up or diversify your collection, to enjoy artisans, foodies, friends, great music and the beauti-ful backdrop that is Great Meadow.

Welcome to the world of Virginia wine — welcome to Virginia Wine Festival.

DALTON DASHDalton Dash is a folk quintet from Richmond.

Slow and sensual or quick and gritty, these guys are always celebrating their love for music in good

company.Patrick Keefe and Justin Doyle met in Radford, Va.,

and originally formed Dalton Dash after moving in togeth-er in downtown Richmond, Va., in 2013. The duo began creating songs that spoke

of love, loss, and troubles that today’s young people could relate to while keeping a traditional yet tempo pushing style. In early 2014, the duo added Keegan Lemcke on

mandolin to increase the already old-time/Kentucky bluegrass feel of their songs. But ... the Dash is not just mountain music. The band has been blessed with the friendship

of some of the best local Richmond, Va., musicians, allowing them to play shows that range from bluegrass to hard hitting rock and roll sets, all the way to jazz funk and delta blues.

Ever wonder how the wine got its “score?”  Now you can be the judge!

Now in its fourth year, the ‘You Be The Judge’ tasting tent provides guests the opportuni-ty to learn how to judge select Virginia wines by varietal, just as in a wine competition.

While these tastings will not be “blind,” seated attendees will be served vintages from up to ten of the best Virginia win-eries.  Guests will learn how to evaluate the various elements

of each wine including Ap-pearance, Aroma, Attack, Mid palate and Finish.

On average, a new wine is poured in the tasting tent every eight minutes and a new varietal is introduced every twenty-five minutes.  Most years, close to 100 separate tastings are poured in the YBTJ tent.  With this intensity of tasting, spill/spit buckets are an important part of the program.

Each wine is introduced

by Virginia wine vet-eran Neil Williamson.  Known throughout the Virginia industry

as “The Grumpy Mar-keting Guy,” Williamson

is a wine writer who also serves as the Chairman

of the Virginia Wine of the Month Club tasting panel.  Along with each varietal, Wil-liamson shares his impression of the wine as well as stories about the wines and the men and women who make them from his over eleven years on

the Virginia Wine Trail.Williamson, a UC Davis

Wine Executive Program alumnus, believes wine should be approachable to all.  Regard-less if you are a Sommelier at a five star dining establishment or a wine newbie, Williamson’s relaxed style and dry wit makes Virginia wine education fun.

Tickets are extremely lim-ited and anticipated to sell out prior to the festival gates open-ing.  This event will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.

NEIL WILLIAMSONNeil Williamson serves as

President of The Trellis Group, LLC, (TTG) a marketing agency focused on East Coast based wineries. In ad-dition to their full time clients, TTG also serves wineries on a project basis.

Known across the industry as the “Grumpy Market-ing Guy,” Williamson serves as the Chairman of the Virginia Wine Club Tast-ing Panel, the Editor of The Virginia Wine Journal and a wine columnist for The Old Town Crier.

He has served as a guest lecturer at The University of Virginia and is Adjunct Faculty to Piedmont Virginia Com-munity College Viticulture and Enology program.

Williamson joined the wine industry in as Marketing Manager for Prince Michel Vineyards in Leon Virginia.

In his tenure at Prince Michel (and their Napa sister, Leducq Vineyards) he developed and implemented innovative promotional campaigns in-cluding television, newspaper,

magazine and outdoor advertising as well as e-mail, event and guerilla marketing.

After founding TTG, Williamson conceptualized and implemented the Dis-cover Virginia Wine

Festival in Greene County. He has helped countless start up and existing Virginia wineries hone their marketing message.

His international work is focused in the winelands of South Africa where he helped create the United States/South Africa Wine Foundation’s apprentice program, bringing South African wine profession-als to work in both Virginia and California wineries for the 2006 harvest season.

Prior to joining the wine industry, Williamson spent

twelve years working for ad-vertising agencies representing national accounts. Williamson has a degree in Communica-tions from Radford University and an Alumna of the first Wine Executive Course from

University of California at Davis (2001).

He also serves as the President/Executive Director of the Free Enterprise Forum, a public policy organization focused on local government.
