His 288 wins are the 8th most in league history and fourth most among active ACC coaches. His winning percentage (.616) in ACC play is the sixth-highest in league history and second among active coaches. • NC State is the first team on Virginia’s schedule ranked in the USA Today Coaches poll. Last season the Cavaliers were 4-12 against ranked foes. • Virginia has scored 115 runs this season, the most in the ACC and the ninth most in the country. • Virginia is 9-1 on its current 15-game home stand, the longest home stint in the Brian O’Connor era (2004-present) AGAINST NC STATE • Coming into the series last year, NC State owned a 25-1 record and the Cavaliers handed the Wolfpack a 4-3 loss in the weekend opener. It marked the 10th time Virginia has scored 20 or more runs under O’Connor. The 22-hit performance in the contest was the most since March 25, 2017 when the Cavaliers racked up 20 in a 13-7 win over Duke. • After not leaving the yard in the first four games of the year, Virginia has hit home runs in eight of the last nine games, including six-straight.• The Cavaliers have hit 15 home runs through the first 13 games, the second most in O’Connor’s tenure (2017 – 16 HRs). The 15 home runs are third most in the ACC and 16th most in the nation.

ON THE HILL• The Virginia pitching staff has struck out 152 batters this season, the sixth-most in the country.• Right-handed pitcher Griff McGarry will be Virginia’s Friday night starter for the fourth-straight week. Opponents are batting .097 off him, the second-lowest in the league.• Both McGarry and Saturday starter Mike Vasil have set single-game strikeout highs this season – McGarry, 12 strikeouts vs. Dartmouth and Vasil 10 strikeouts vs. Bucknell. The duo is responsible for all three of the staff’s quality starts this season.• Out of the bullpen, graduate transfer Stephen Schoch is tied for second in the ACC and eighth in the country with four saves. He has appeared in eight games this season and struck out 20 batters in 10.2 innings pitched.• With a combined 12 appearances, Andrew Abbott and Kyle Whitten have yet to surrender an earned run. Abbott is tied for the team lead with three wins and Whitten has a team-best three bullpen holds to his credit.

PLAYER NOTES• Logan Michaels and Marc Lebruex have hit safely in a team-high six-straight games. Michaels set new single-game career bests in hits (4), doubles (2) and RBI (4) against Richmond on Tuesday night.• Freshman Max Cotier tripled for the third time this season in Tuesday’s win over Richmond. The three triples are the most in the ACC and tied for the second most in the country. Two of the three came against Dartmouth last Saturday becoming the first Cavalier since Adam Haseley in 2016 to triple twice in a game.

LEAVING THE YARD• Through 13 games this season Virginia has hit 15 home runs, the third most in the ACC.• Virginia has hit 15 or more home runs through its first 13 games one other time in Brian O’Connor’s tenure – 2017 with 16 in the first 13 games.• Eight different players have been responsible for the 15 Cavalier long balls. Of the eight players, five went deep for the first time in their Cavalier careers.• Christian Hlinka leads the team and is tied for second with four homers in just 24 at bats. Of the 72 players in DI base-ball with four or more home runs, only 11, including Hlinka, have appeared in 10 or less games.• Virginia has hit two grand slams, the latest coming off the bat of Chris Newell who powered an eight-run seventh inning against Dartmouth on last weekend• Zack Gelof rounded the bases for an inside the park home run on Saturday against Dartmouth, the first since Danny Hultzen did it against Richmond on April 20, 2011.• Hlinka and teammate Jimmy Sullivan went back-to-back against Dartmouth on Saturday becoming the first duo since Jake McCarthy and Adam Haseley hit consecutive home runs at Georgia Tech on May 18, 2017.

NEWELL-COMER• In four games last week, freshman Chris Newell went 10-for-15 (.667) with three doubles, a triple, a grand slam eight RBI and five runs scored. • Newell currently leads the team in batting average (.410) and co-leads the team with in hits (16) and RBI (13).• Newell’s .574 on-base percentage is the second-highest in the ACC and ranked 20th-best in the NCAA. • Newell has reached base in all but one of his first 13 games of his college career and has five-straight multi-hit games coming into Friday.• On top of his work at the plate, Newell is a perfect 6-for-6 in

PENSACOLA IN REVIEW• Virginia began the season with a 6-0 shutout of Oklahoma who was ranked as high as No. 16 in this week’s Baseball America Top 25.• The opening day shutout was the first by the Cavaliers since 2009 (12-0 vs. Bucknell). Four Cavalier pitchers – Griff McGar-ry, Kyle Whitten, Andrew Abbott and Stephen Schoch limited the Sooners too just two hits. • With inclement weather in the forecast, the two teams were forced to play a doubleheader on Saturday in which the Sooners were victorious, 7-2 and 5-1 to take the three-game series.• Oklahoma pitchers limited the Cavaliers to six hits over the 18 innings of the Saturday double dip.• The series took place at the Pensacola Blue Wahoos, the Double-A affiliate of the Minnesota Twins.

NEW HOOS• Over the weekend, eight new Cavaliers saw their first action as a member of the program. A total of four position players and three pitchers made their collegiate debuts.• Second baseman Max Cotier started all three games and his first hit of his college career came in his first at bat last Friday night, an RBI single that scored Nic Kent.• Junior transfer Marc Lebreux also started all three games (1 LF, 2 RF) and came up with a big two-RBI hit late in the season-opening win over Oklahoma.• Three freshman hurlers – Jacob Baldino, Nate Savino and Matt Wyatt – all saw action on opening weekend. Baldino pitched the final two innings of game one of Saturday’s doubleheader, did not allow a run and struck out a pair of batters.

SEASONED PITCHING STAFF• A stark contrast from a year ago, Virginia returns over 380 innings from its pitching staff last season, including Griff McGarry, Chesdin Harrington and Mike Vasil who all spent time on the weekend rotation.• The 2019 Cavaliers returned just 177 innings, the fewest in O’Connor’s tenure at Virginia and only the second time the Cavaliers had less than 200 innings returning since 2004.• At the back end of the bullpen, Virginia will turn to Andrew Abbott who has been one of the ACC’s most reliable arms the past two seasons. AT THE PLATE• Historically, Virginia has been one of the top hitting teams in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Since 2009, the Cavaliers are sport a .302 batting average, highest in the league during that span.• In the past two seasons, Virginia has the fewest strikeouts of any team in the ACC. In 2019, UVA hitters fanned 371 times and in 2018, 319 times, both league-lows.• Senior Logan Michaels was statistically the ACC’s toughest batter to strikeout (11.3 AB/K) in 2019.

DYNAMIC DUO•Nic Kent and Zack Gelof combined to steal 33 bases as freshmen. Only twice in UVA history has a pair of first years swiped 10+ bags in a single season.
