SAN BERNARDINO — Five Inland Empire junior bowlers (Deelynn Berrie, Matthew Carrey, Daven Horn-back, Samantha Morning, and Dillon O’Neil) earned cer-tification for completing their multi-session training clin-ic with the legendary Paula Vidad, PWBA, Team USA, World Champion Bowler and TNBA Member, this past weekend! The training clinic was hosted by the Junior Council Program within the Inland Empire Senate of the National Bowling Association, Inc. (TNBA), and spon-sored by Paula Vidad and Del Rosa Bowl. This collabo-ration allowed the Inland Empire Senate’s junior bowlers to receive world class training tips at an affordable cost. According to Ms. Vidad, “A coaching clinic is always a benefit to youth bowlers, as they develop their individual game and style. Basics are the foundation, but no two bowlers are alike. A Coach is there to see them improve and enjoy the game for a lifetime – whether it’s for recre-ation or competition.”

The junior bowlers worked on “Approach, Lane Play, Timing, Targeting, Topography and more!” Berrie ex-claimed, “I really enjoyed the coaching clinic with Ms. Paula. I learned so many new techniques!” Carey stated, “…the clinic was a good learning experience to become a better bowler!” Morning contended, “Ms. Paula was great…she showed my good (and bad) bowling habits, and how to fix my bad ones!”

As the youth enter an upcoming busy bowling season, Ms. Vidad’s training was designed to help them improve their overall bowling knowledge, skills and lane usage – making a difference in their local bowling league experi-ences and giving them the extra edge, as they have the opportunity to compete in upcoming bowling tournaments (The Junior Council Program’s USBC and TNBA Certified - SMART Scholarship Tournaments, USBC Citrus Belt, USBC Pepsi, USBC California State, the Junior Bowlers Tour (JBT), the Junior Amateur Tour (JAT), USBC-Junior Gold and others).

The bowlers’ parents were inquisitive observers while Ms. Vidad led the youth to improve their skills. When asked how they felt about what was observed, they col-lectively commented with, “Enjoyed seeing the attention

she gave each…extremely helpful…analyzing all aspects of the game from the correct equipment, to stance, to de-livery…Paula is very relaxed and teaches in a way the kids understand, and provides immediate feedback and praise…will definitely attend more coaching clinics like this!”

Ms. Vidad enjoyed coaching the junior bowlers, as-serting, “I was quite impressed with their progress! They were quick on their feet and absorbed a lot of information I threw their way. I hope to work with them again in the near future and track their progress!” She offered this ad-vice to parents’ whose children are being coached: “It’s important that parents not be too stern or strict with their kids’ efforts, be supportive. Let THEM enjoy it!”

About TNBA and the Inland Empire Senate’s Junior Council Program

TNBA has more than 2,500 junior bowling members, nationally (ages 4-20). The Inland Empire Senate’s Junior Council Program supports our diverse youth members with fun, competitive and personal activities. We encour-age them to set goals and achieve success on and off the lanes, including the development of leadership, academic and bowling skills. Equally important is participating in community service. The TNBA organization engages in fundraising activities at the local, regional and national levels each year, to support students in higher education

through the Junior Program and Scholarship Program, Inc. (JP&SP) -- “Paving the Roads to Their Futures!”

TNBA’s Vision Our vision is that youth bowlers would develop a love

for the sport of bowling through “sportsmanship, fellow-ship and friendship” through their TNBA (The National Bowling Association, Inc.) certified youth bowling pro-grams and it fuels their desire to continue bowling and supporting TNBA into their adulthood.

TNBA’s Mission Statement Our mission is to educate, train and encourage youth to

become aware, interested and involved in the operation of their local Senate and The National Bowling Association, Inc. through active participation and growth.

“Do You Believe in Magic” That’s the title of the hit song first recorded by The Lovin’ Spoonful” in 1965.The magic to which the lyrics refer is the power of music to provide happiness and freedom to those who make it and those who listen to it.Then there’s the Magic of Bowling.Do you believe in the Magic of Bowling?Perhaps you do, perhaps you don’t.For those who have experienced it, the Magic of Bowling is a powerful force and it shows up in many forms.Don’t believe it?Well, the NBA’s Indiana Pacers do.Team members paid tribute to the Magic of Bowling after the pixie dust had worked for them. Here’s what happened:The Pacers had been in a frustrating three-game losing streak earlier this month and they were at their wits’ end trying to figure out how to return to winning basketball. So what did they do?Naturally, they got their mojo back after taking a trip to the Lucky Strike bowling center across the street from the downtown Phoenix arena. The team-bonding bowling jaunt resulted in a 97-94 victory over the Phoenix Suns the following night. The game ac-tually wasn’t as close as the score suggests because the Pacers grabbed a 20-point lead in the third quarter and coasted from there.Quickly, the Pacers became believers in the Magic of Bowling.Pacers forward Paul George described how the team shrugged off its lethargy from its previous games after a couple of fun hours at the bowling center: “You want to get all the guys together away from basketball and just [have] a time [when] everyone can just be themselves, have fun and enjoy each other’s company, and that’s what we did.“We had a nice little bowling game. We ate. It was good for everyone to be around each other when we’re going through this moment of change right now.”Pacer center Ian Mahinmi also became a believer in the Magic of Bowling. “It brings us together. You can’t really overlook that,” Mahinmi said. “The fact that we want to get together off the court, it’s a good sign. That means that we like to spend time with each other. It’s good for chemistry and it’s good for togetherness.”That’s not to say that the Pacers are the first NBA team to recognize the rejuvenating Magic of Bowling. Suns Coach Jeff Hornacek turned to the bowling lanes one day this month after his team faded into a nine-game losing streak. He shut down practice and took his team across the street to Lucky Strike. Poof: Losing streak no more. The Cleveland Cavaliers are another team that knows the feeling of the Magic of Bowling. Their brush with magic made headlines.Last year at this time, Cleveland was a shockingly mediocre team in the NBA, falling one game below .500. That’s

when Coach David Blatt ripped up his playbook before his team was to meet the Lakcrs and Clippers on back-to-back nights in L.A.Instead of working out his team, he took his players to Lucky Strike Hollywood for a practice session – of bowling. Here’s how Chris Haynes of Cleveland.com reported the story:“The Cleveland Cavaliers were of the understanding that they were on their way to prac-tice on the campus of UCLA on Wednesday afternoon.“The team was reeling, coming off of losing its sixth straight game and a grueling practice was the anticipation. But what should have been a six-minute bus ride from their Beverly Hills hotel to the campus turned into 10, then 15, then a 20-minute ride. . .“Head coach David Blatt had something up his sleeve. When the bus finally stopped, it was in front of a bowling establishment in Hollywood. To their shock, they learned practice was never in the plans. It was about getting away from basketball and bonding as a team. . .“I think it was a surprise for most guys,” Kevin Love said. “It just helped so much. We all needed a break from it all.”The Cavaliers then scored back-to-back victories over the L.A. teams, defeating the Lak-ers, 109-102, and beating the Clippers, 126-121.Before you knew it, the Cavaliers rode the momentum from those two victories all the way to the NBA finals. And just think: People thought LeBron James was responsible for the Cavaliers’ resur-gence. They apparently weren’t acquainted with the Magic of Bowling.

the PBA50 Tour so it’s never easy when you bowl against him. I was fortunate he just wasn’t able to get anything going in that match.”

In the women’s regional match, Beasley, a resident of Clarksville, Tenn., and a three-time woman bowler of the year in her native Venezuela, defeated collegiate and Team USA standout Danielle McEwan of Stony Point, N.Y., 246-177. Beasley, the wife of veteran PBA competitor Mitch Beasley, got out of the gate fast with the first four strikes while McEwan couldn’t recover from three opens in the match.

“It was so emotional just for me to be here,” Beasley said. “I had to make sure to keep my emotions calm be-cause Danielle is a great bowler and I knew I would have to bowl my best to win. Starting with the first four strikes gave me a lot of confidence and calmed me down.”

In the PBA Regional final, Allen, a 13-time Tour win-ner from Mount Kisco, N.Y., defeated two-time Tour ti-tlist and defending PBA Regional Challenge winner Josh Blanchard of Mesa, Ariz., 289-227.

Allen’s bid for a 300 game was thwarted when he left a 6 pin on his 11th shot.

“This was encouraging to win because I haven’t bowled well the last few years,” said Allen, who won five region-als in 2015. “I’ve been plagued with some back and hip injuries. It’s tough when you get to your 40s. All of those games and all of the travel starts taking its toll on you.”

In the Teen Masters Grand Championship between a pair of 17-year-old high school seniors, Soedarmasto, of Levittown, N.Y., defeated Brigitte Jacobs of Freeport, Ill., 244-178, in a contest that required the teenagers to bowl on a different lane condition on each lane using their choice of two bowling balls specially designed for the Teen Mas-ters competition.

Both players earned their berths in the final by win-ning boy’s and girl’s Teen Masters titles in Las Vegas last summer. Each earned $7,500 scholarships but Soedarmas-to earned an additional $2,500 for winning his match in Reno.

“Bowling on two different lane conditions adds to the challenge and the fun,” Soedarmasto said. “I learned a lot competing in the Teen Masters tournament this year. At the end of the day after bowling on this it reassures you how well you can actually bowl and define yourself as a bowler.”

Both Teen Masters champions indicated their dream is to one day bowl on their respective professional tours.

Concluding the telecast, Beasley won the one-ball, low-score-out PBA Challenge Clash involving the four winners. Allen was the first to bow out, followed by Bohn and Soedarmasto. While the winner received a trophy and bragging rights, it was the second year in a row that the female contestant emerged as the winner. Missy Parkin of Laguna Hills, Calif., won the inaugural Challenge Finals Clash in 2014 at South Point Bowling Plaza in Las Vegas.

PBA Tour action continues on ESPN2 Sunday, Jan. 31 with the DHC Japan Invitational at 11 a.m.

BARSTOW – Revolutions Barstow Bowl has been honored by the Barstow Chamber of Commerce for being a “finalist in the first annual top chamber business award for the 33rd Assembly District.”

Paula Vidad accepted the award on behalf of the bowl-ing center. Vidad, one of the foremost women bowlers in the country, is the general managing partner of Revolu-tions Barstow Bowl.

Barstow Community Hospital was named the top busi-ness in the district.

“Just an honor to be in the same breath as the winner, Barstow Community Hospital,” said Vidad on her Face-book page. “Thanks goes to my great staff.”

Vidad typically works 70-hour workweeks at her bowl-ing center, which doesn’t leave much time to concentrate on her bowling.

Still, Vidad is preparing to defend her title in the Na-tional Golden Ladies Classic in Las Vegas. Vidad created history with her Golden Ladies title last year because it allowed her to become the first player to claim the Triple Crown in senior women’s bowling.

Vidad also earned championships in the 2011 United States Bowling Congress Senior Queens and the 2013 and 2014 Senior U.S. Open.

Vidad’s Golden Ladies title at the Orleans Hotel and Casino was accomplished when she came back from a 30-pin deficit to beat USBC Hall-of-Famer and

top-seeded Tish Johnson, 237-225, in the championship match.

Vidad made it a personal goal to become the first per-son to win the senior women’s Triple Crown. She later

Despite her grueling schedule, Vidad has embraced a new activity with a Friday night class in boxing. Asked if it’s helpful to her bowling, Vidad answered, “Absolutely.” She will be competing in this year’s Golden Ladies tourna-ment starting Feb. 28.

Lord who bowls with both hands won this one from the port-side (left) and a tidy $2,500 for his superb effort. These are Two of the Good Guys. Great bowling & exciting as they tied in the title game and had to re-bowl the game in which Lord won out in game 2! Ferguson was on his game and won his 4th ABTA title. Winning the top qualifier position. Lord who bowls both ways in the ABTA won for the first time as a left-hander finally down-ing upstart Louis Evans in a double title game finals as they tied in Game #1 to take home a tidy $2,500 top prize.

The cut scores were ON THE LOW SIDE this time. Men +55 and Ladies +21 making the Semis and Super Seniors added were Bobbie McCollum -13 and Jesse Boqio +51 and Sun Sundara +38. Bowlers ad-vanced to the semis in hopes of making the top 16 single elims and Ralph Montgom-ery had left, not realizing that he was the CUT at +55. Bowling well and making the top 16 finals were 10-16th Chris Solomon, Deb Sanders, Tom Mazzulla, Bobbie Mc Collum, Sol Cericos, Steven Alberts and Tess Dizon.

In 6-9th places were

Henry Hoang, Henry Nar-ciso, Bill Warren and John Phan. In 4th and 5th were Ramon Alliamn and Joevin Bolanos.

In the Semi-Final match it was now Louis Evans vs Josh Ness with the win-ner to advance to the title match. Mr. Evans prevailed in a good game. Josh was 3rd $200 and Evans off to the title game vs Ferguson. Ness bowled very well, his highest finish to date and he bowls most every week with us.

The title game was on and was a CLOSE game throughout. They tied with handicap as Evans got a bad break on a split in the 10th, 224. Now another game for the title and Louis seemed to have lost the shot with opens in frames 3-4-5 giving Lord the edge that he held through the game, and winning 234-176 with handicap. His first ever left handed title. Great bowling by a nice man who is with us every week and same can be said of Mr Evans.

Great bowling on a tough condition by both men!

Champion Lordan Fer-guson hails from Fontana and used an IQ drilled by Marv Sargent at Foothill Lanes. He is married to a supportive, pretty lady Ven-tura who was not on hand for this one.

Louis Evans is from Co-rona, married to Angela, ABTA member also not on hand here! He used a Black Widow drilled by Arvo Dy-gert at the Arvo Dygert Pro Shop.

Joshua Ness hails form San Dimas. He used a DX-8 drilled by Memo Rosales at Chaparral Lanes. Josh is single!!

It is great to bowl at the Bowlium and we will re-turn there soon. The staff is top notch there!

Congrats to two of the Good Guys. In the 3-6-9 roll-off worth $900 last man up was Lou-is Whitlock, he missed the first shot so he got a $100 consolation and the pot is a tidy $1,000 Saturday!

BOWLING NEWSPage 6 January 28, 2016

ARLINGTON, TX — Few terms get tossed around the sport of bowling more than timing.

During the approach, the slightest hitch in the pushaway or quickness of the feet may disrupt a bowler’s timing, which often affects the results 60 feet away. However, the perfect timing throughout the approach can lead to consistency, better results, and, most importantly, more wins.

From an early age, Missy Parkin of Laguna Hills, California, exhibited the latter, roll-ing her first perfect game at age 14 and winning the first Junior Gold Championships two years later in 1998.

Even before those successes on the lanes, she knew bowling was going to be a part of her life.

“I can remember in kindergarten when the teacher asked everybody what they wanted to be when they grew up,” Parkin said. “Most kids would say they wanted to be a police officer or doctor, but my answer has always been a professional bowler. I can imagine the look on my teacher’s face when I said that, but it has always been what I wanted to do.”

Timing in life, however, does not always work out the way things are planned. After spending four years on Junior Team USA and beginning her collegiate career

at California State-Fullerton, Parkin was faced with an unplanned, but welcomed, chal-lenge. California State-Fullerton was unable to field a women’s team after her second year, but she was given the option to join the men’s team and compete against the guys.

She not only accepted the chance, she thrived, helping California State-Fullerton ad-vance to the 2003 Intercollegiate Team Championships, where she earned the tourna-ment’s most valuable player award in a field that included the likes of Sean Rash and David O’Sullivan.

“During my first two years, the women’s team only had five bowlers total, so we didn’t even have a sub,” said Parkin, a two-time National Collegiate Bowling Coaches Associa-tion first-team All-American and the 2002-03 NCBCA Most Valuable Player. “I was sad when the women weren’t able to field a team, but I was ecstatic to bowl with the men. I already had a lot of experience of bowling with the guys from junior bowling, so I was ready for the challenge.”

Another new challenge awaited Parkin as she prepared to graduate. During her final semester, the Professional Women’s Bowling Association Tour closed

its doors, unraveling a plan Parkin had set in place for as long as she could remember.“My goal was to go to college, get my degree and then go out on tour,” Parkin said.

“That had been the plan forever, and I was one semester away from being able to bowl. I was absolutely devastated. I wasn’t sure what I was going to do, since the plan I had for my whole life was thrown out the window.”

In 2004, Parkin once again adjusted to the curveball and proved her resilience by be-coming the first woman to join the Professional Bowlers Association.

She attempted to earn her spot on the PBA’s exempt Tour at the inaugural PBA Tour Trials later that year but was unable to gain an exemption. Once again having to adjust to life without a tour, Parkin took a job at a public relations firm. Six months later, her father and bowling-industry professional, Frank Bellinder, encouraged her to continue her quest to live out her lifelong dream.

“My dad convinced me to quit my job, come and work with him at his pro shop and bowl anything and everything,” Parkin said. “And that’s what I did. I was about 23, quit my job and started bowling full-time. I started to travel overseas a lot to bowl at that time, too. It was very awesome and a very cool time, but the ultimate goal was always to have a full-time tour.”

Parkin quickly became a household name as one of the top female players in the world. She captured her first major title at the 2011 United States Bowling Congress Queens, qualified for the PBA Women’s Series each year of its existence and brought home a handful of medals in international competition as a Team USA member.

In October 2014, USBC and the Bowling Proprietors’ Association of America an-nounced the re-launch of the PWBA Tour starting in 2015, finally giving Parkin the chance to realize her dream.

“I was bowling a practice session at a PBA regional when the news came out,” said Parkin, the first woman to win three PBA regional titles. “Someone asked me about it, and after I looked it up, I needed someone to pinch me because I couldn’t believe it was really happening. It was something we all had been waiting for, especially the ladies in my generation that just missed the chance to tour. It really was a dream come true.”

Parkin made two championship round appearances during her first season on the PWBA Tour, and now that she has a home for the future, she has her sights set higher for 2016 and beyond.

“I have really high expectations for myself,” said Parkin, who finished third at the 2015 PWBA Storm Sacramento Open and PWBA Lubbock Sports Open. “My ultimate goal is to be in the hall of fame. It’s so prestigious, and I really aspire to join a few of my friends like Virginia Norton, Vesma Grinfelds and Fran Deken with that honor.”

Selection as PBA Player of the Year (POY) is the highest honor awarded a professional bowler other then induction into the Hall of Fame. Over the years it has been an award given to the player who has outperformed his contemporaries for a season. The winners include the greats and near greats in PBA history. While some selections have been con-troversial most have been popular though not unanimous.

While there are several strong candidates for this years award, my choice for 2015 PBA Player of the Year is Ryan Ciminelli. My preference is based on three factors: (1) Titles won, with extra credit for Majors, (2) How each player finished the season and (3) My impressions of dominance by the current top players.

When examining these objective and subjective factors in some detail there appears to be four serious contenders for the award (Jason Belmonte, Parker Bohn III, Ryan Ciminelli and Bill O’Neill) and two top contenders (Belmonte and Ciminelli).

When evaluating Titles and Majors I assigned a point value to each. I assigned one point for a regular title and a point and a half for a Major Title. As a result, my four seri-ous contenders had the following point totals:

Titles Majors Points

1. Ryan Ciminelli 2 (X1.0) 1 (x1.5) 3.52. Jason Belmonte 0 2 3.03. Parker Bohn III 1 1 2.54. Bill O’Neill 2 0 2.0

No other player has a point total of more than 1.0.

A close look at what I consider the most important factor in selecting a POY shows that Ryan Ciminelli is the clear cut winner when it comes to winning Titles and Major Titles in 2015.

I feel that a player’s ability to”FINISH STRONG” is a sign of his/her talent for per-forming under pressure. Those who finish strong are winners. I feel those who are best at finishing strong should be recognized and given credit for doing so.

When it comes to finishing the 2015 season the strongest, Ryan Ciminelli is the clear cut winner. During the last half of the season Ryan won three titles, including the U.S. OPEN. He also finished third in the last Major of the year (PBA World Championship). During the same period, Jason Belmonte, the other top contender for POY, has not won a title and appears to be struggling on the lanes.

I was at the World Series of Bowling in Reno last December and closely observed every action by the top performing players. What I saw when it came to the appearance of “DOMINANCE” was Ryan Ciminelli being the most determined and most confident player there. He had the look of a predator on the prowl. Of the other three of the four se-rious candidates for POY only Parker Bohn III came close to displaying the determination and confidence exhibited by Ciminelli. Day after day I only saw confusion, uncertainty and disappointment on the faces of Belmonte and O’Neill.

In my opinion Ryan Ciminelli not only gives the appearance of dominance on the PBA Tour at the present time, he is the dominant player right now. He is my choice for 2015 PBA Player of the Year.

NOTE: This opinion piece is being written just days before the PBA announces it’s official POY. I hope the voting players agree with my assessments.

NATIONAL DEAF BOWLING NEWSby Connie Marchione

BOB JONES LED WITH 245/758 IN DEAF TRAVEL’S BAD SCORING AT KEYSTONENORWALK — When will this stop? So-Cal Deaf Traveling League had another bad

scoring day in its stop at Keystone Lanes. In this trios league not one bowler hit a 800 (4 games) series and no team hit a 2000 (4 games) as the league averaged 152 per bowler for the 2nd straight time.

Bob Jones led the day’s honor roll list of four bowlers with games of 158, 245, 208 and 147 for 758. Darrell Stogryn followed with 203-180-143-204 for 730 and two bowlers rolled a 200 each, Gorman Low with 205 and Paul Taffolla, Jr with 204. Paul Jr’s father Paul Taffolla, Sr almost made father and son on list with his 199.

There is a surprise shakeup in team standings as Low’s third place Anaheim rallied to win final 7 points to upset league leader Eagle Rock 15-5. In doing, Anaheim leaped over Jones’ 2nd place S F Valley, which beat Stogryn’s Chino Hills 13-7 to stay in 2nd place only half point behind new leader Anaheim. Eagle Rock fell in third place 4 points be-hind Anaheim. Another change is 5th place Riverside beat 4th place Mid City 12-8 and they exchanged places, with Riverside 6 points and Mid City 7 points behind Anaheim respectively. This 53 year old traveling league thanks Keystone Lanes management and staff for hosting with challenging lane conditioning that was a learning experience. The bowlers will take a long sojourn for a tournament and Super Bowl and resume bowling at noon on February 21 at Bowling Square in Arcadia.

REDLANDS — Dino Dennis has a PH.D. in education and has been a teacher, administrator and supervisor. He has affected the life’s of hundreds of students in a positive way over decades of service. He is a bowling hero.

This Doctor is a bowler. In his spare time Dr. Dino Dennis is a bowler. He has been a bowler for decades and his success on the lanes rival his accomplishments in education.

Over the years Dino Dennis has rolled sixteen perfect games and four eight hundreds, with a high of 847. He regularly averages 220 and currently is on a 221 pace.

Recently Dino did it again. He rolled his sixteenth per-fecto at Empire Bowl. It is amazing that a man of seven decades plus is still so good. What is his secret? I think it must be his wife Pat. Behind every successful man there is a great woman. Dino is grateful to Jay at Round One Lanes for drilling the Elite Traitor bowling ball that was used to roll his perfect game. I am grateful to the BOWL-ING NEWS for supporting Citrus Belt bowlers.

I wonder if Dr. Dennis is the only PH.D. in California to have rolled a perfect game and an eight hundred series? Maybe the only such bowler in the USA? Dino wishes to thank his wife Pat for her love and support.

MISSION HILLS – There’s more to the story about Anthony Sharpsteen and his 888 series.

It was reported last week that the right-handed Sharp-steen turned in an amazing performance at Mission Hills Bowl on Jan. 25, 2011 when he set a north Los Angeles County United States Bowling Congress record for a se-ries with games of 289, 299 and 300.

It was undoubtedly the highest series ever recorded in the Los Angeles County area.

According to the California Bowling News, “a packed 9 pin and two solid 7 pins kept Anthony from the elusive 900 series.”

But there was more to it than that.First, Sharpsteen competed as a substitute for his team.

And what a sub he was.Second, his five-man team lost all three games by a to-

tal of a mere five pins. Each game was decided by a pin or two. What eventually cost Sharpsteen’s team was the fact that the opposing team’s No. 4 man (Scott Lemmen) and anchor (Rusty Bryant) struck out in the 10th frame of each game.

Bryant, who works in the Pro Shop at Winnetka Bowl, looked back at that crazy night and put it all in perspective in his typically understated manner:

“[Sharpsteen’s] team bowled well and our team bowled well too,” Bryant said.

This Substitute Definitely Did His Part

SAUGUS – There are the usual reasons for visiting the local bowling center. You’re there to bowl, you’re there to socialize while you’re bowling and you’re there

to exercise while you’re bowling. But not so fast. More and more bowling centers have turned to other activities within their premises to lure customers.

Now there’s karaoke, there’s dancing, there’s live bands, there’s speed-dating. There’s even off-track horse-racing betting – at least there is at Santa Clarita Lanes in Saugus.

The brainchild of part-owner Tom Cristi, the betting parlor has been around at the bowling center for about three-and-a-half years.

It’s typically open during the day on Wednesdays and Thursdays and day and night on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. The weekends attract the biggest turnouts with about 200 people packing the room on both Saturday and Sunday.

“I’m considered a mini-satellite,” said Cristi about his off-track site. “The big satel-lites are in Palmdale and Ventura and they have seating for 500. I have seating for 140.”

Cristi said some bowlers at his center may not even be aware there’s a gambling area on site. Likewise, he said some horse-racing players may not be aware there’s a bowling center around the corner.

The big thing the horse-racing site provides is “something to do,” especially for retired seniors who may seek other activities besides watching movies or golfing, Cristi said.

“What’s good about it is that it’s free admission and parking,” said Cristi, a self-de-scribed horse-racing enthusiast who used to own racehorses. “And people can bet as little as a dollar.”

Cristi, a regular bowler with an average of more than 200, said his gambling site generates a lot of action; he estimates that his patrons “bet at least one million dollars a month.” And many of those wagers have proved to be huge winners. Cristi said there “have been a lot of guys who have won six, seven, 14 thousand dollars. Our biggest was $52,000 on one ticket.”

That monster winner hailed from the Santa Clarita Valley area and he won the Pick Six, which requires that the bettor select the winning horse in six consecutive races.

One of Cristi’s biggest racing highlights came June 9 when American Pharoah com-pleted the Triple Crown with a victory in the Belmont Stakes. American Pharoah became the 12th horse to capture the Triple Crown and the first in 37 years to win it.

The race was shown at the Santa Clarita Lanes off-track site, like all the big races. “It was really exciting to hear the roar of approval when American Pharoah won the

Triple Crown,” Cristi said. “People just wanted to see history.”Robert Edwards, a former bowling center manager, has visited the off-track site and

has come away impressed. “It puts a tremendous amount of traffic in the center,” said Edwards, who works as a manager at Mountasia Family Fun Center, across the street from Santa Clarita Lanes. “They pack the place. The parking lot is always full. I think [Cristi] was the first to think of the idea – at least in L.A.”

Johnnie Englehart, an elite bowler, also has passed by the off-track site and was equal-ly complimentary. “What a creative idea it is – to think outside the box,” said Englehart, adding that it’s a great place for race-track gamblers who prefer not to travel to Palmdale or Hollywood Park.

“It was creative on Tom’s part. As you can tell, people like to bet or gam-ble.” There are 14 voucher machines for self-serve bettors at the site. Addi-tionally, there are a couple of tellers who can handle the wagers. Cristi said one of the key reasons he put in the off-track gambling site was the fact that from noon to 5 p.m. it was “quiet” at the bowling center.

But not anymore.

Off-Track Betting Turns Into Smart Wager for Santa Clarita Lanes

by Fred Eisenhammer

The off-track horse-racing betting site at Santa Clarita Lanes is typically open Wednesday through Sunday.

Teammates in the Roaring 90’s Scratch Doubles League, Richard Lee and Allan Brunmier were for a couple of months,” knocking on the door” of the first place spot in our Roaring 90’s Scratch Doubles League. But,It finally materialied, when the two captured the league Championship during our Final Position Week competition January 21st. As usual I chat with the winners and while Richard is a very quiet and reserved bowler, he always wears a beautiful smile. He could only say, IT WAS GREAT”! On the other hand, Allan did share with me that it wasn’t until he retired from his work place in 2002, he decided, after some 45 years, to start bowling again. “ He said he had set 3 goals for himself: (1) achieve a 200 average for a season; (2) bowl a perfect (300) game; and (3) bowl an (800) series”. His achievement of the first two are on record. He added, “It was so gratifying to finally win this year, especially when it went right down to the last frame of the final 3-game series and ONLY by a margin of 5 pins”. up by successfully defending his Tournament of Champi-ons title in the 50th anniversary Barbasol TOC in India-napolis, posting a 232-214 victory over top qualifier Rhino Page of Orlando, Fla.

Belmonte will try to become the second player to win the FireLake PBA Tournament of Champions three con-secutive times when the 51st classic begins Feb. 1 at Fire-Lake Bowling Center in Shawnee, Okla. Hall of Famer Ja-son Couch accomplished the feat in 1999, 2000 and 2002.

In addition to his wins in the Masters and Tournament of Champions, Belmonte had nine other top-five finishes including runner-up finishes in the PBA Grand Oklahoma Open and PBA Maine Xtra Frame Shootout. He led the PBA Tour in earnings with $178,542 and ranked fourth in average with 225.40.

Svensson, a 20-year-old two-handed player, won his second PBA Tour title, and first on American soil, when he defeated Germany’s Pascal Winternheimer, 267-193, to win the PBA Chameleon Championship presented by Ho-telPlanner.com at the GEICO PBA World Series of Bowl-ing VII presented by Silver Legacy at the National Bowl-ing Stadium. Earlier in the year he won the 13th Kingdom of Bahrain Open.

Svensson was a runaway winner in the Rookie of the Year race, voted upon by PBA members. He was the choice on 68.5 percent of the ballots cast, topping Texas teenager Anthony Simonsen’s 14.11 percent and Washing-ton’s Cameron Weier’s 10.33 percent.

Svensson was the leader among rookies in average (225.81) and earnings ($57,870).

“I am very proud and honored to get this award,” said Svensson. “Just a lot of happiness going through my body right now. I have always dreamed about competing and winning on U.S. soil and that dream came true. I think that is a big thing that helped to get this award.”

Belmonte and Svensson became the first players from outside the U.S. to earn Player of the Year and Rookie of the Year in the same season. They were also the first play-ers who use the unique two-handed delivery to earn those honors in the same season.

Blanchard, who won both of his PBA Tour titles in 2015, was selected as the Nagy Sportsmanship Award by his fellow competitors. Established in 1966, the Steve Nagy Sportsmanship Award is named after the late PBA Hall of Famer and founding members of the PBA. A color-ful and talented performer, Nagy made such an impact on his fellow pros that the award was established shortly af-ter his death. Other players receiving strong support were Ronnie Russell and Dom Barrett who were next in line in Steve Nagy Award voting by PBA Tour players.

“I’m very honored, of course, that my peers would vote me this honor especially this early in my career,” said Blanchard. “No matter who you are out there on Tour I do my best to treat each player with respect and I’m happy to say that I get that same respect in return. For me, compet-ing with that attitude helps me be a better bowler.”

Godbout, a PBA West Region competitor, was selected by a special PBA committee as the recipient of the 2015 Tony Reyes Community Service Award which is named after the PBA champion who died in 2012 as the result of a traffic accident.

Godbout, who is a youth director and a USBC bronze level coach 4th Street Bowl in San Jose, established sev-eral charitable initiatives in Reyes’ name including the Tony Reyes Memorial Scholarship and the Tony Reyes Memorial Youth/Adult Doubles Tournament. He is also co-founder of the 4th Street Bowl Junior bowling program and is a past recipient of the NorCal Tony Reyes Memorial Award.

“This is a huge honor and I’m a little overwhelmed,” Godbout said. “I had just started to work with Tony to or-ganize a youth program at 4th St. Bowl and it was only a month after I met him that he passed away. I’ll never forget how much help he was to me and how enjoyable it was to work with him, so that was really my inspiration to get in-volved in putting the tournament and scholarship together in his honor.”

BURBANK — As league bowlers, we usually put little thought into our league secretary or our relationship with the local bowling association (NLAC). It’s time we did. League secretaries spend time doing your awards, making sure you’re sanctioned/certified and managing your league and it’s monies. They should be your go-to person with any concerns you have. You may think of your league as a fun thing you do on a given night but it truly is a business proposition in which you are involved. Secretaries are your liaison to the bowling association (NLAC) who handles the business from your league to the national level (USBC). A word of advice, know your secretary. They might be your close friend or just an acquaintance, but they are your busi-ness partner in bowling.

Having said all that, you might want to get to know your local association as well. It is comprised mostly of volun-teers who care about the sport passionately. Very few re-ceive compensation for the hours and effort they put into making your league business functional and legal. Not to mention the tournaments the association provides. Do not fear contacting your association with any concerns you may have. It can, and will, get answers and the help you need.

One more thing, Mitch N. you were the best secretary ever! I miss you.Sunday Night Hdcp: (scr) Ron Alvarez 260, Ann Jones 161, Will Pisnieski 714, Sharon Brown 471. DOWNEY — It wasn’t pretty, but it was enough as Threadworks moved into 1st place in Round 5 by sweep-ing past The Professional Approach 5-0. The US Open pat-tern was playing especially tough tonight as most teams struggled. Paul Varela led the charge to the top, as he fired a very nice 604 series to lead the sweep. Danny Ly led Power House Video Games to a sweep of their own, as they took down Blizz Yogurt 5-0. Danny shot 625, while Greg Neuer led Blizz with 581. Team DV8 is once again in contention for the round lead, as Sam Hitchcock winged his way to 242/623 and led DV8 to a 4-1 win over Linder Insurance.

Linder was paced by Kurt Arakaki 592 and Kevin Val-monte 591. In the best scoring match of the night, Pino’s Pizza prevailed 3-2 as they held off Alhambra Coin Center to win Team Totals by 13. Both teams bowled well, finishing as #1 and #2 scoring teams for the night, and their pair was 250 pins higher than any other two teams combined scoring for a pair. Leading the way for Pino’s was Ramon Torres 627 & Leonard Ruiz 600, while Alhambra was led by Doug Kempt 660 & Steve Gaucin 608. Herzog Insurance took a 4-1 win over the PJ-less Los Altos Trophies team as Mikey Villarreal shot 625 for the winners, while Top Dog for the night went to Los Altos’ Buddy Lucas with a very fine 670.

In the roll off team matches, it was Erickson Foods once again losing the first two games, only to come back strong in Game 3 and not only win the game, but Team Totals. Er-ickson pulls within 2.5 games of holding the #1 seed with the 3-2 win, as nobody managed to shoot 600 series, Herbert

Jones led the way for Keystone Lanes with 589, while Jason Buenviaje shot 563 for Ericksons. Charlie Kinstler shot 614 to lead SYSCO to a 5-0 sweep of Forest Lanes who strug-gled all night to catch SYSCO. Mason Man O’Lantern Sher-man topped Forest with 589. American Harvest Vodka out shot CASAMIGO’S Tequila and won 4-1 as Kevin Jones rolled 588, while Vernon Adams topped the Tequila team with 565. Mike Jennings shot 594 to lead Tifco Industries to a 4-1 win over BOWLIUM, who had the pair’s high series, Craig Stevens with 623. Matt Mosley powered his way to 255 & 638 to lead Cook’s Bowling Supply to a 5-0 sweep over J.A.T. DeeRonn Booker led the Junior Amateur Tour team with 549. In the final pairing, it was GJC Services win-ning 3 points as Juan Zavala topped his squad with 511.

Sidepot winners were Game 1 – Sam Hitchcock 242 Game 2 –Jason Buenviaje 226 however the Financial Advi-sor’s pot was won by Buddy Lucas 225 for $240 with Leon-ard Ruiz Jr. 2nd place with 223 for $100. Game 3 Super Pot went to Mikey Villarreal 255, quite the contrast from last week where you needed 11 strikes or more to win. The TRUE ANCHOR award goes to a new winner, Barry Couch Jr. collected the honors with a 3 game set of 361.

One more week on the dreaded US Open shot to try and move into the Round Lead, improve your standing, or move up the ladder in the Roll Off seedings. I’m sure most can’t wait for May to get here, since we will be finished with this pattern. Hope to see you all down at Del Rio next Monday in Downey. Have a blessed week everyone!

DOWNEY — The Brunswick Invitational hit the lanes for week 6 of 7 in the long oil round & DV8 was looking to lock up the round with a 3 point lead going into tonight, though Linder’s Insurance was hoping to have something to say about that. The two teams faced off with the round possibly on the line while other teams tried to position themselves for a strong finish next week.

In that “A” match, as stated round-leaders DV8 with 21 wins met up with Linder’s Insurance’s 18 wins for the second time this round. Linder’s came out strong taking game 1 by 124 pins but DV8 roared back to take game 2 by 102 to set up a huge last game. Linder’s finished just strong enough with a couple doubles and a couple opens in the 10th, holding on for a 4-1 win and a tie at 22 atop the leaderboard. These two teams will meet again next week with the round on the line.

Right behind those two in the “B” match, red-hot Alhambra Coin Center put their 18-win record up against Forest Lanes who fell back to 4th after taking 1 point last week. Forest Lanes jumped back into the race with a 4-1 win taking them to 20 wins and two points back but still in contention going into week 7. Gip Lentine led Forest with a 598 set while Doug Kempt’s 556 was high for Alhambra Coin. Forest will stay in the “B” match next week facing Ketel One though Ketel One is mathematically out of contention.

Ketel One’s sweep last week put them against J.A.T. who took 4 last week putting both teams at 15 wins. Eddie VanDaniker found his soft hand this week 160 pins better turning with two pots and a 686 series combined with Bobby Hornacek’s 647 to lead Ketel One to 4 wins. Larry Campbell’s 222 third game and 577 series helped J.A.T. take one point in game 3.

Second-round winners Don Julio Tequila, the last of the 15 win teams, met up with 8th place Cook’s Bowling Supply at 14. Cook’s was in the driver’s seat blowing past the Tequila boys by over 300 sticks. Matt Schermerhorn led Cook’s with a 603 set while Buddy Lucas was the only Don Julio player to break 5 at 566.

First-round winners Professional Approach matched up with

Wowo’s Smokin’ Hot BBQ with both teams at 13-12. Wowo’s came out smoking taking games 1 and 2 by plenty en route to a 4-1 win. Mike Mellick subbed his way to the Wowo’s lead at 577 while Ramiro Garcia’s 642 set was only good for 1 win.

The 11-12 match was GJC Janitorial who won 5 to move up to 11th vs. Keystone Lane who was swept down to 12th. GJC came out striking with a nice 831 game to start but dropped the next two and totals by just 28 for a 4-1 advantage to Keystone. Herbert Jones bounced back from last week to lead Keystone with a 596 set while Gary Duran and Ryan Hinchliffe both broke 6 for GJC with nice 610 and 606 sets.

Pino’s Pizza took 4 last week to move up to 13th and a match up with Relax-Release-Repeat who were swept down to 14th. Pino’s dropped games one and two but came back roaring to win game three by 166 and take totals for the 3-2 win over the Triple-R gang. Dean Sanderson led R-R-R with a 556 set while Herman Ferguson’s 265 last game and 626 set helped Pino’s take 3.

Los Altos Trophy and Sysco have both been struggling through the round falling to the 15 -16 match where something had to give this week. Los Altos took advantage sweeping right through Sy-sco led by Joe Jimenez’s 610 set. Paul Barraco led Sysco with a 544 set but it wasn’t enough to capture a point.

Herzog Insurance, Threadworks, Erickson Foods and Crema-tion Centers of CA matched up in the bottom two matches this week with all 4 teams looking to break into double-digit wins. Erickson beat up on Cremations Centers of CA taking all 5 points led by Charles “Z-man” Zelaya’s 632 set. Threadworks also made a clean sweep of Herzog with three subs including Raul “Spanky” Rosales’ 607 set. Nacho Vega’s 538 set led CCC while Kevin Gagnon’s 531 was high for Herzog.

Sidepots went to Eddie VanDaniker Game 1- 235 and Game 2- 247 for $75 each while the third-game Super Pot went to Ramiro Garcia- 243 for $225. Financial advisors pot was hit by Eddie VanDaniker for $220 and second 225-tie between Herbert Jones and Ashkan Tahvildaran for $50 each.

Come on down to Del Rio Monday nights at 8:30 and watch So. California’s best scratch league in action!
