It is not just Bonfire Night fast approaching. Fireworks go on for days around bonfire night and now Christmas and New Year is as popular. You may have already heard fireworks being set off in your local area. For many of us we enjoy the sight, smell and sound but what about your dog?

Some dogs aren’t bothered and happily sleep through them whilst others love them and sit in the garden staring at the sky watching. But for a great many dogs fireworks can be terrifying and very stressful.

What do you do if you dog isn’t a fan of fireworks and is one of the many dogs who become stressed and anxious during these loud bangs and bright lights? How do you keep your dog safe?

It is a good idea to walk your dog earlier in the day before fireworks are likely to be set off as a big danger at this time of year is dogs becoming spooked and running away. In 2012, Petlog, the UK’s largest database for microchipped pets, recorded a staggering 40% increase in the number of calls reporting pets as missing by pet owners, or found by vets, welfare organisations or dog wardens compared to the daily average during November.

Don’t forget to also check what your dog may be picking up on walks after Bonfire Night. Debris from fireworks may look enticing to a dog so be sure to check he isn’t eating anything he shouldn’t.

If your dog becomes particularly anxious during fireworks there are a number of measures you can take to help her relax ranging from popping on the TV or Radio as a distraction from the noise to using a DAP diffuser (discuss with your Vet) or calming tablets depending on the severity of your dog’s anxiety.

If you are the proud owner of a new puppy watch the fireworks with her, and remain calm while doing so, as this should help acclimatise her to these new sights and sounds. Sadly some dogs are just not comfortable with fireworks and require us to remain as calm and relaxed as possible to help them through this stressful evening!

There are a total of six species of reptiles found in the United Kingdom including grass snake, slow worm, common lizard, adder, smooth snake and sand lizard. The first four of which are found right here in Warwickshire and its neighbouring counties.

Despite the preconceptions, all reptiles are elusive and would much rather avoid people entirely. This is the reason they are very rarely seen despite being quite common in the local countryside.

Commonly, when the word adder is mentioned, people naturally worry about the safety of children and pets. Yes, adders are venomous! But they are also very shy and take great effort in avoiding anything bigger than they are.

Many species of reptile employ unique defence mechanisms in order to avoid contact with people or predators. For example grass snakes, which for some reason are unable to flee fast enough, will often play dead, rolling on their backs and sticking their tongues out, hoping to be left alone.

Adders were once regularly recorded within Warwickshire, however these records are

now few and far between (though they fare reasonably well in Northamptonshire). This is as a direct result of habitat loss and persecution.

There are still notable populations of grass snake, slow worm and common lizard within the local area and at this time of year they will be in search of suitable hibernation sites where they can shelter in waiting for spring to return. Reptiles, once emerged from hibernation around March, head in search of food and suitable breeding locations, so if you want to encourage reptiles into your garden, a large compost heap can make the perfect egg-laying habitat. A nice pond, where amphibians breed, also provides a great food source for grass snakes. Reptiles can be a gardener’s best friend with slow worms effectively regulating slug and snail populations.

We should not fear these wonderful creatures as they are a fundamental part of our ecosystem ensuring the natural regulation of insect, mollusc, amphibian and small mammal populations and without which we would suffer not only economic loss within our agricultural industry but also the intrinsic loss of such fascinating animals.

Casey Griffin, ECOLOCATION

Retro SweetsThis Christmas why not take your loved ones back to their happy childhood-days by buying them some retro sweets.

Lots of treats for yesteryear have become available again, and you can buy them in all shapes and sizes from single items to whole boxes of your favourites, and some that are gift packaged in hampers or used to create tree or flower designs.

Many of us will remember sweets such as Space Dust, Black Jacks, Flying Saucers, Refreshers, Sugar Mice, Parma Violets, Midget Gems, Wham Bars and Traffic-Light Lollies, I could go on to name many more. For me it was a Friday treat to have 10p to spend and select carefully ‘one of those and one of those etc’ which the assistant would then place into a little white paper bag and hand over to me. I would then joyfully savour them as I walked home from school taking ages to decide in which order I’d eat them.

Behind those items, all laid out in small trays on the counter, were shelves crammed with tall glass jars, containing items such as Pear Drops, Bon-Bons,

Pineapple Cubes and Cherry Lips, all of which were more commonly bought by the quarter.

There are now many shops with these layouts again, selling retro sweets. These range from tiny independents to chains that have many branches across the country. They all create a sense of nostalgia, and I’ve watched grown ups get such joy in once again telling the assistant ‘I’d like one of those and one of those etc.’ They are even known to whoop with delight when they find an old favourite again for the first time. Such retro sweets have also become firm favourites at weddings, where special candy carts are sometimes set up for guests to enjoy.

So if you are old enough to remember when Snickers used to be called Marathon, chances are your friends and family are also of the right era to enjoy a Sherbet Dip liquorice stick or some Fruit Salad chews. Why not take them back to their carefree days, pop in to an old fashioned sweet shop and tick another present off the shopping list. You could also arouse the interest of your younger relatives too, who won’t familiar with these sweets but are sure to find them as delightful as we did.

Shopping List2 Large Duck Breasts200g Cranberries1 OrangeRedcurrant Jelly500ml Beef Stock, Fresh Pouch from SupermarketI sprig of Rosemary, ChoppedSalt & Pepper

Pre heat oven to 200˚C

Score skin on duck and trim edges. Pan fry duck skin side down, starting in a cold frying pan, this will render down a lot of fat from under the skin. Then roast in the oven for 6

minutes and rest for 5 minutes. This should be nice and pink. If you wish it to be cooked more, roast for 8-10 minutes.

To make the sauce, zest and juice the orange, adding the rosemary and the jus and reduce in a frying pan until it has a consistency which coats the back of a spoon.

Serve with seasonal greens and roasted potatoes.

Perfect with a glass of fruity, full bodied red wine.

Delicious!

Remembrance Day Factsl Remembrance Day takes place on November 11 to mark the moment the guns of the First World War fell silent, at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918.

l The first Armistice Day was held in 1919 throughout the Commonwealth.

l The name changed to Remembrance Day after the Second World War.

l Remembrance Sunday is held on the second Sunday in November each year, with services at war memorials and churches.

l The poem ‘In Flanders Fields’ by Canadian surgeon John McCrae, inspired the use of the symbolic poppy. The opening lines of the poem refer to the thousands of scarlet poppies that were the first flowers to grow over the churned-up earth of the battlefields.

l The Queen lays the first wreath during the national ceremony at the Cenotaph in Whitehall.

l Money raised by the sale of poppies is used by the Royal British Legion to support servicemen and women.

Steve Droy, Piano Tuner Local expert Piano Tuner, Steve Droy has returned to England having spent 2 years training students and tuning Pianos in Mumbai, where humidity levels as high as 85% can ravage the inside of the piano. Its not just India however, where pianos need TLC. Here are 3

Tips for keeping your piano healthy:Regular Tuning - At least once a year as the tension inside the instrument needs to be maintained.Radiators- Ideally do not place you piano next to one.Prevent dust and grime by keeping the piano away from windows that face a street.

The Peephole, 25 years old In 1989 Pauline Beckett had a vision to turn a derelict 17th century barn in the centre of Long Buckby into a gift shop. With the help of

her husband Dick and family, “Peephole Crafts and Gallery” opened it’s doors on the 2nd of December 1989. 25 years later, Mary and Mike now own “The Peephole”, two floors packed full of top quality, sometimes unusual, cards and gifts for all occasions. A wonderful treasure trove of gifts.

Together we make a difference

MND is a fatal, rapidly progressive disease that affects the brain and spinal cord. It can leave people locked in a failing body, unable to move, talk and eventually breathe. It kills five people every day in the UK, 30% within a year of diagnosis and more than 50% within 2 years. It has no cure.

We are the only national charity in England, Wales and Northern Ireland focused on improving care and support, funding vital research and campaigning to raise awareness for people affected by MND. We rely on voluntary donations.

Find out how you can support our work at www.mndassociation.org

The Ice Bucket Challenge has been a wonderful opportunity to spread the word about motor neurone disease (MND), and so far the Motor Neurone Disease Association has received £7 million in donations. A big thank you to all of you!

You might not know, but 80-95% of people living with MND will experience some loss of speech before they die. Too many people experience significant delays in getting the right communication equipment, leaving some people with MND to die without a voice.

This is unacceptable. We need your help to change this.

In a few months time we will be electing our MPs in the 2015 general election. Now is our chance to influence candidates standing for election and ask them to commit to working with us on this important issue.

It only takes you two minutes to help us give a voice to people living with MND.

Come online to sign our charter and to invite your local candidates to read our manifesto.

Dear Santa …

Forgive me writing to you this year, but I thought if the kids can write to Santa why shouldn’t I at least give it a go?

I’ve been a good mother all year. I’ve baked 23 dozen cupcakes for the school fundraiser, made 7 different costumes for various school events (two of them won prizes) and worked out how to attach nine patches onto my daughter’s Girl Scout uniform with staples and a glue gun.

Here are my Christmas wishes:

I’d like a pair of legs that don’t ache after a day chasing the kids and arms that don’t flap in the breeze. I’d also like a waist since I lost mine sometime during my last pregnancy.

I’d love a car with fingerprint resistant windows and a radio that plays only adult music. While we’re on the subject of gadgets a TV that doesn’t broadcast any programmes containing talking animals and a refrigerator with an unbreakable combination lock would be great too.

As I don’t look like having much spare time

in the next 18 years or so I’d like a talking daughter doll that says ‘Yes, Mummy’ to make me feel like I might be in charge some of the time and a recording of Tibetan monks chanting ‘Take your hands off your brother’ – because my voice seems to be outside my children’s hearing range (although the dog seems to hear it OK).

In a perfect world I’d like at least one pair of jeans that will zip all the way up without the use of power tools and a soundproof room where I can hide to talk on the phone.

If it’s too late to find any of these items I’d settle for enough time to brush my teeth and comb my hair without interruption on the same morning – or the luxury of relaxing over a grown up dinner with my husband without a child having a nightmare, needing a drink or simply being awake at a time when it’s reasonable to expect them to be dead to the world.

The buzzer on the cooker is ringing so I have to go – have a safe trip and don’t drink too much sherry.

Yours Mum x

Dear Santa …
