Come and see the puppies who become Guide Dogs throughout the UK. They all start their journey at the National Breeding Centre located just outside Leamington Spa. Derek Blunt has lived and worked in Northamptonshire all his life and can trace his family, all living in and around Northampton since the early 1500’s - so can truly claim to be a Northamptonian.

After working for the County Council for over 30 years mainly providing services for the elderly and disabled; at the age of 50 he set up his own travel company, ‘Carefree Holidays’ to help elderly and disabled people enjoy just that – a ‘Carefree’ holiday.

On retirement at the age of 70 he was able to devote more of his time to his many hobbies including walking, gardening, sketching, painting, DIY, travelling, watching football, playing bowls, visiting stately homes and parish churches. He even found a new hobby as a writer. Who says retirement is boring?

Derek published his first book - ‘Landmarks’ – Parish Churches in Northamptonshire in November 2011 which proved to be very popular. He has again put pen to paper and is pleased to announce the publication of his second book entitled Northamptonshire County of ‘Spires and Squires’, ‘Landmarks’ featured every parish church in the County and the main churches in the towns. ‘Spires and Squires’ features all the towns and villages in the County

plus about one hundred settlements mentioned in the Domesday Book which have either disappeared completely or have become deserted or shrunken over the centuries.

Let ‘Spires and Squires’ take you on a journey through our lovely County which in many respects is one of England’s hidden gems – almost, it seems unwilling to make itself known to a wider public.

With a few exceptions you will not find Northamptonshire on any Tourist Trail. Although being landlocked with no mountains and few areas of outstanding natural beauty there are many attractive villages and superb buildings among which are numerous beautiful Parish Churches and a considerable number of stately homes. Of the almost 300 churches included in ‘Landmarks’ almost a third has a spire, which feature prominently particularly along the Nene Valley.

Among the most majestic are those at Oundle, Rushden, Higham Ferrers, Middleton Cheney and Kings Sutton, all of which rise high above the surrounding houses. Some spires have been lost over the years mainly on account of neglect or lightning strikes. Most notable losses are those at Rothwell, Moulton and Little Harrowden. Although most churches are ancient, spires did not start to appear until the late 13th century. Churches are free to visit and if they are not open a key holder can usually be found nearby.

Spires & Squires With a few exceptions Stately Homes in the County date from about the 16th century at a time when wealth was being re-distributed following the Dissolution of the Monasteries and honours were bestowed on prominent figures in the field of law, politics and royal favour. In a number of instances such as Holdenby and Kirby, grand houses were built in the hope of hosting the monarch. Others were rebuilt on the site of earlier buildings, whereas some were enlarged in accordance with the newly acquired status of their owners.

Most villages had a Squire and a ‘Big House’ and although many of the Houses have been lost over the years particularly following neglect during and after the Second World War the County still has a large number although many have been converted into residential apartments and are therefore off limits to the general public. A number are still family homes and others are maintained by a Charitable Trust.

The most important for the visitor are Boughton House (Duke of Buccleuch) Althorp House (Lord Spencer) and Sulgrave Manor (Washington). Others open occasionally to the public include Deene (Brudenell) Stanford on Avon (Cave) Cottesbrooke (Macdonald Buchanan) and Southwick (Capron).

Of the grand houses lost forever the most impressive must have been Holdenby (forerunner of the present Hall) and Pytchley Hall. Kirby Hall is a romantic and preserved ruin and together with Apethorpe Hall is now cared for by English Heritage. Canons Ashby House is protected for posterity by the National Trust. Overstone Hall on the other hand (damaged in a fire in 2001) is a sad and decaying sight.

As far as the villages themselves are concerned you are free to wander almost at will and the most attractive parts are often those off the beaten track. My visits to every town and village in the County have sometimes been quite exhausting but nevertheless very rewarding. Although I have lived and worked in the County all my life I have come across many attractive buildings and unusual sights that I did not know existed.

Beat the January blues with hearty stews, full of wintery warm goodness and cheap to pull together. Perfect after the indulgences of the past month - on the body and the wallet.

Such a bleak time of year doesn’t have to mean bleak food on the plate. Inject some colour and flavour into your dishes with seasonal lovelies such as purple sprouting, chard, rhubarb, oranges and beetroot.

Mussels and oysters are in season In February. Probably the easiest and most common recipe for cooking the mussels is Moules-frites, which simply translates as mussels with fries. Moules marinière is the classic way of cooking mussels using cream, white wine, shallots and parsley.

Although purists like to eat their oysters raw, they can also be grilled, poached or steamed and take on a different texture and flavour.

Stir fry leeks & greensServes 22 medium leeks, trimmed of tough leafly ends, chopped into 1cm ribbons 4 chopped spring onions (1cm thick)4 sliced/chopped celery sticks 250g (1 x bag) of curly kale or spring greens or spinach 2 tablespoons of coconut oil/butter2 garlic cloves, crushedSea salt & black pepperGood knob of organic full fat butter (25g)

Heat coconut oil/butter in pan, add garlic

Add chopped leeks, spring onion and celery to oil and garlic and stir for a few minutes

Add bag of greens, salt, pepper and butter

Keep moving until greens all wilted and shiny from melted butter and serve

Dauphinoise potatoPeel and thinly slice potatoes. Butter and season a 6-8” square oven proof dish and layer

potatoes, seasoning each layer until you reach the top of the dish. Bring cream, sprig of

thyme, 2 bay leaves, 2” grated horseradish or 2 tablespoons of creamed horseradish to the

boil, simmer for 5 minutes, strain and pour over potatoes. Cover with foil and bake for 60

minutes at 160˚C. Remove foil and bake for further 10 minutes to colour top. Set aside.

SalsifyNot many households use salsify as it is an unusual ingredient but I love it this time of year

and it is very easy to prepare. It is a root covered in mud, but this is important as it discolours

very quickly, so peel under running water and put into a bowl of cold water with lots of lemon

juice. Cut into finger length batons and boil for 7

minutes. Cool under running water.

KaleWash, then pick from the main stem and break into

smaller pieces. Cook in salted water for 2 minutes,

cool in cold water and set aside.

All of the above steps can be done in advance if

required and kept in the fridge until needed.

To bring the whole dish together, pre heat oven to

200˚C. Place Dauphinoise in oven to heat through. Heat frying pan, season and oil the

venison steak, then place in the hot pan. Sear on all sides then place on an oven tray with

a piece of thyme and roast in the oven for five minutes (for medium rare) then take out and

leave to rest in a warm place. Deglaze the frying pan with red wine, 1 tablespoon redcurrant

jelly and beef stock, reduce to coating consistency then add ½ teaspoon crushed juniper

berries. Fry salsify in butter and oil until golden brown then add kale and sauté for further

minute.

Carve up the venison and plate up.

Bon appetit!

Suggestion: Prepare everything in advance and keep in the fridge

until ready to cook for a stress-free dinner for two

Did you know that British gardens occupy twice the area set aside for nature reserves? This means they play a vital role in wildlife conservation.

How you can help

Put up nest boxes and roosting pockets These provide places for birds to breed and sleep.

Set up feeding stations High energy foods like stale cake, biscuits, pastry, pasta and potato are enjoyed by many birds. Raisins and other dried fruit are welcomed by Blackbirds and Thrushes. Most garden centres stock a variety of proprietary bird seed and nuts which appeal across the species but don’t forget to scatter some under hedges for shy birds like Dunnocks and Wrens who prefer to feed on the ground.

Make sure fresh water is available It’s important for drinking and bathing.

Once you’ve created a welcoming environment it’s time to sit back and take part in The Big Garden Birdwatch run by the RSPB (Royal Society for the Protection of Birds). Simply spend an hour recording how many birds and which species visit your garden on either the 26th or 27th of January and submit your results online at the address below. Not only will the results will be analysed and published on the site but you’ll get the warm glow that comes from knowing you’ve done your bit for bird conservation.

1 tsp coconut oil1/2 red onion, roughly chopped1/2 red pepper, diced1 garlic clove, crushed1 large carrot, peeled and chopped1 large sweet potato, not peeled, chopped same size of carrot1 heaped tsp grated fresh root ginger1/4 tsp turmeric2 tsp of Marigold Reduced salt vegetable Bouillon powder75ml (2 1/2 fl oz) coconut milk.

Heat oil in a large pan and gently sauté the onion and garlic for a few minutes until soften and translucent

Add the carrot, sweet potato, ginger, turmeric and bouillon powder. Just cover with boiling water and bring back to the boil.

Cover and simmer for about 15 minutes or until vegetables are soft.

Add the red pepper and coconut milk,then blend until smooth and thick.

A new year - a new start. How can you start improving your diet and your chances of leading a healthier lifestyle?

First – eat breakfast! After many hours without food our bodies need refuelling to bring the blood sugar back up and ensure the brain and muscles are functioning properly. Eating breakfast aids concentration and creates energy.

Drink more water We lose on average 2-4 litres of water a day, which needs to be replaced. Current advice is to drink 6-8 glasses daily to ensure that our brain, blood and muscles are able to function at their best.

Eat more fruit and vegetables. Their vitamins and minerals boost the immune system, whilst antioxidants fight cancer and disease, and fibre cleanses the gut. We should eat five portions per day.

Eat less red meat Reduce the risk of bowel and other cancers. Health experts suggest 500g per week (the equivalent of one steak, one pork chop, 2 sausages and a portion of Bolognese sauce) or 70g per day (three rashes of bacon).

Eat more consciously Take time to really taste and savour the food in your mouth. Be aware of the textures and flavours - and chances are you will enjoy your food more whilst eating less of it!

Another 100% pass rate for the talented LoveBallet Dancers, who recently took their Ballet & Tap exams in Southam. It was a busy day for the girls and boys who took examinations ranging from Pre-Syllabus, with some as young as 4 years old to Grade 6 where pointe work is required for the examination.

Start by taking 100% responsibility for what you say and

My attention is drawn to an article on the great winterGardens of the Victorian age. I wonder if scrooge would have spared a penny and visited such a place and revelled in exotic plant species from afar, Exhibitions drawn from the continent, elegant ballrooms and bars all housed underneath the latest glass and wrought iron structure.

From my armchair perspective, I begin to wonder if our winter beaten square metres could reflect a little of that Victorian exuberance.

Architectural form is called for to reflect a strong structural presence to support this winter wonderland, punctuating axis and directing movement through the garden.

Try planting the silver birch Betula utilis var.jacquemontii. Its white flaky bark contrasts well with fresh red stems of the Dog wood Cornus alba sibirica or alternatively try Acer griseum, copper coloured bark

contrasted with the evergreen shrub Euonymus fortunei ‘Emerald Gaiety which can be regularly cloud pruned.

Once the door is open, charm the audience by weaving a colourful winter Narrative through the borders. Use the broad glossy leaves of Bergenia ‘Sunningdale’, tinged red by winter cold, mixed with the arrow like foliage of Arum italicum.Create individual rooms and corridors that manipulate the pace of flow with tightly clipped

evergreen hedging such as Yew, Box or even Holly. Thick, Dark lush walls joined

at the ground with carpets of hellebores and Cyclamen

hederifolium foliage.

After running my own business for many years, we have experienced all types of interesting challenges when it comes to sta� and technology. Gone are the days when you had the power to stop individuals from accessing Facebook or instant messaging systems simply by disabling the rights to view from your server, as they just use their smart phones when they nip to the toilet every 5 mins! I remember tutting at others in the o� ce who constantly took personal calls in work time, or reprimanding a sta� member for having accessed their Hotmail account whilst at work…hasn’t life changed over the last 3-4 years?

Today, many companies have branched out with Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn accounts, internal blogs, and even Pinterest boards. Promoting the use of social media for employees has proven to be good for business. But why allow it during o� ce hours? Research has indicated that employees who were allowed to watch the latest You Tube hilarity, send out a few Tweets, or plough through their Google Reader throughout the day were more productive than those who worked straight through. Brief breaks between di� cult projects allows the brain to reset, refresh, and renew leading to higher levels of concentration.

It’s a little bit like receiving a funny cartoon on the fax machine and passing it around the o� ce… the good old days!

If you are concerned about allowing access to social media platforms at work, then please consider these bene� ts:-

• If you have external employees (on-call, � eld sales, engineers etc), social media platforms connect everyone together. • Connecting everyone creates a great company culture and vibe. • You may discover a dark horse, a real creative star in the making that would have previously been overlooked. • Increases motivation and you would be amazed that the conversations will continue long after working hours. • Liberal social networking policies can help retain talented employees.• Social networks allow for quick question answering and problem solving. Tweeting about how your website is down and asking if others are having the same problem, may bring the website provider to get a move on � xing the problem.

Are there potential downfalls to social media mixed with business? Sure. If you’re not good about keeping yourself on track, or are distracted easily, Tweeting during crunch time isn’t a good plan. There’s also the problem of spilling the beans about company secrets or business deals that aren’t approved for public release. Having a company social media policy is essential for all businesses, so ensure that you have yours in place!

Bottom line: social media has become a key to being competitive in the market, whatever your business is.

So now I’ll pose it to you: Would you let your employees engage in social media during ‘business’ hours?
