Techlicious 2012 Best of CTIA Awards

Posted by Suzanne Kantra on May 09, 2012

Yesterday was the first day of the CTIA Wireless 2012, an event that showcases all sorts of wireless technology, from what's recently arrived on the market to what's just around the corner. As usual, there's a lot going on in the wireless industry, from apps that protect your privacy to innovations in call quality and, of course, great new phones.

We scoured the show floor to pick out the best phones, accessories, apps and services. And these eleven products made our list for the Techlicious Best of CTIA Wireless Awards 2012.

Best Product for Seniors: Doro Experience

Seniors can benefit from smartphones just as much as the younger generation. But the interface and countless number of apps can be overwhelming for those who grew up in a time when phones still had cords. The Doro Experience software succeeds at retaining the core functionality of Android devices, while making navigation a breeze, even for the most technically challenged. The simplified interface takes the place of stock Android, with fewer, larger icons and apps that have been pared down to key functions. There’s also a marketplace of dozens of apps, including one for easily accessing Facebook content. Family members or a friend can optionally use the Doro Experience Manager to manage the content and applications stored on the device, and can add meetings to the calendar, such as doctor’s appointments, remotely.

Price: Approx. $65 for a two-year subscription when it's available late this year.

Doro Makes a Smartphone for Seniors

By Jared Newman May 9, 2012 |

Tech specs and fancy features take a backseat to oversized buttons and a dead-simple interface in the Doro PhoneEasy 740, a phone built with older folks in mind.

To even describe the Doro 740 as a smartphone seems like a stretch. Though it’s based on Android, it bears no resemblance to the operating system seen on many high-end handsets. Instead, the Doro 740′s 3.2-inch touchscreen presents users with a simple list of options, such as calls, text messages, e-mail and a handful of basic apps. The bottom panel of the phone includes number keys instead of a full keyboard, trading fast typing for easy button presses. The back of the device holds a 5-megapixel camera.

For pre-loaded apps, I spotted a version of Tetris and a web browser, and Doro will also include a re-skinned version of Facebook designed for ease of use. Doro will offer more apps through its own store, such as wellness apps, news readers and games, but I’m told that it’ll allow access to the Google Play Store as well. (I’m not sure about this, since Google tends not to allow Market access on heavily modified Android devices, and the Doro can’t even play music or video.)

Page 8: Viktoriia Nakhla's Portfolio

That’s not to say the Doro 740 is just a feature-limited phone with big buttons. It also has some unique features that seniors might find helpful, such as the emergency button on the back of the device. When pressed three times, the phone can sound an alarm, and will also send text messages and calls to a sequence of five preset contacts. Doro will also offer a web-based desktop app for remote configuration of the phone, which, for instance, would allow a tech-savvy teen to set up the phone for grandma.

Unfortunately, seniors interested in the Doro 740 will need patience. The company doesn’t plan to launch the phone in the United States until the second quarter of 2013, though it’ll be available in Europe this August. Adventurous seniors might be able to figure out a full-fledged smartphone by then.

Hands On With the World's Simplest Android Phone

By Sascha Segan

May 10, 2012 12:44pm EST

NEW ORLEANS—Simple-phone company Doro wants to get seniors on board with the smartphone revolution with a new, super-easy smartphone and tablet interface. I got some time with Doro's PhoneEasy 740 phone and Doro Experience tablet software, which may be coming to U.S. carriers soon. Doro isn't unknown here; it has been selling simple phones through Consumer Cellular for two years now. But the PhoneEasy and Doro Experience take them to a new level. The PhoneEasy 740 is a sliding phone with an extremely simple interface that doesn't look like Android at all, even though it's really just a skinned version of Android 2.3. The phone has a 320-by-480 touch screen, 3G, Wi-Fi, a MicroSD memory card slot, Bluetooth 4.0 and a 5-megapixel camera, so the hardware is pretty decent. Unique Doro features include wideband audio (also known as "HD voice"), an app that uses the camera as a magnifying glass, an unusually powerful speaker, and a configurable panic button on the back. The phone starts up with four huge bars on the screen representing Contacts, Calls, Messages and Email. You can scroll down to get to other options like a Web browser, podcast client, camera magnifying glass app, and Doro's own app store. You can operate the entire phone via the touch screen or the cursor keys. Wait a minute: a podcast client? On a phone for old people? Doro's CEO Jerome Arnaud said it's all been thought through. In studies, some older clients have said they often stay home to catch specific radio programs. A podcast client preloaded with the most popular programs frees them from having to sit by the radio, he said. Doro's app store, called Doro Selection, will initially have about 15 well-selected apps including news, banking, and transportation-related apps, Arnaud said. It'll grow with

Page 11: Viktoriia Nakhla's Portfolio

time, and there will be a way to get arbitrary Google Play apps onto the PhoneEasy 740, too. Before you grumble: if you're reading PCMag, remember, this phone isn't for you. Instead, you're probably going to be the one operating the "Doro Experience" from afar, one of the most innovative parts of the PhoneEasy equation. Arnaud showed me a PC-based interface that lets relatives set up and monitor PhoneEasy devices and Android tablets from afar, adding and removing apps and setting up accounts. I clicked through the PhoneEasy 740 for a while, and it's all very well thought out. It's not a slim phone. The keys are depressed slightly and well separated. Any action taken on the touch screen involves very large targets. The one flaw comes in the texting and email apps. There's no on-screen keyboard or predictive text, at least that I saw. That means any text entry on the phone is extremely tedious triple-tapping. Doro hopes to bring the phone to the U.S. sometime soon, Arnaud said. And while he's "very satisfied" with his company's relationship with Consumer Cellular, "we have a greater ambition" to break into larger, national carriers. With the PhoneEasy 740 potentially coming in CDMA and GSM versions, it could appear on any carrier, he said. Doro Simplifies Android Tablets I was actually even more excited by Doro's Android tablet software than by the company's new phone. Android tablets are not known for ease of use, but Doro has entirely replaced the standard Android interface with big, bold, simple icons. The Doro Experience on tablets can be set up remotely by friends and family with PCs, and even includes a simplified Facebook application so the tablet user can see photos and comments. This isn't hardware, at least not yet. Rather, it's a skin that can run on existing Android tablets. I saw it running on a Samsung Galaxy Tab, for instance. It's really easy to use. Text is big and clear. Icons are simple. The apps do exactly what they say they do. It's positively refreshing. I think the Doro Experience could sell Android tablets to seniors; I think you'll agree after seeing how it works. Take a look at some sample screens in our slideshow above. http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2404255,00.asp

Doro's mobile ecosystem for seniors includes PhoneEasy 740

At CTIA 2012, Doro introduced its PhoneEasy 740 to the U.S. audience, as well as its app and management tool tailored for the elderly.

NEW ORLEANS--Usually when I come across a phone designed for the elderly demographic, more times than not it's a feature phone. Most have the same big rubber buttons, the simple UI, and some sort of emergency call button.

I've never seen features characteristic of a smartphone, however, like data connection, a touch screen, or an app store.

That is, until now.

The Doro PhoneEasy 740 is a smartphone for seniors (photos)

Page 13: Viktoriia Nakhla's Portfolio

At CTIA this year, the Swedish telecommunications company, Doro, announced an entire mobile ecosystem tailored for an older demographic. This includes its first ever smartphone for seniors, the Doro PhoneEasy 740.

The PhoneEasy 740 is equipped with all the characteristics seen in most devices aimed at seniors. It retains the same generous keypad, the bumped-up audio volume, and the clean interface.

But, because it's aimed for those who want something in between an easy-to-use cell phone and a feature-packed smartphone, the PhoneEasy 740 is also an Android device that can browse through the Internet and load apps.

Don't get me wrong, it won't look like any Gingerbread or Ice Cream Sandwich handset you've seen before. Though users can still access Google Play and purchase games like Angry Bird, its interface is much simpler.

The device includes a 3.2-inch touch screen and a 5-megapixel camera on the back, which can double as a magnifying glass. Also on the back is an emergency call button that will dial and text five preprogrammed numbers when pressed.

It's estimated that the PhoneEasy 740 will cost $99, and it's slated for commercial availability in spring of next year.

The device is all part of Doro's upcoming mobile ecosystem, which also includes a software interface, an app store, and a management tool.

Page 14: Viktoriia Nakhla's Portfolio

(Credit: Lynn La/CNET)

The Doro Experience is an interface that you can purchase as an app. It can be installed on a tablet, and there is a PC version of it as well. It can be set as a default launcher, and it gives users access to applications like a calendar, e-mail, and a photo viewer in a easy-to-use, colorful interface.

Through the Doro Experience, you can access the Doro app store called Doro Selection. The store will feature apps tailored to seniors, such as Doro Friends, which takes your Facebook account and spits it out in a much cleaner, simplified version.

If you choose to, you can give relatives and loved ones access to this Doro ecosystem with Doro Manager -- an online management tool that lets you or people you know, log in and input information like an upcoming doctor's appointment onto your calendar app.

Doro reps said the Doro Experience will have a free, albeit limited version, available in the Google Play store. However, if you want the entire package, complete with Doro Management and some extra cloud storage, the going price will be $59.99 for two years.

UAV Navigation to sponsor Reno racerUAV Navigation to sponsor Reno racer By Janice Wood July 17, 2012 UAV Navigation, a vendor of flight control avionics and motion processing solutions, will sponsor a plane in Reno’s National Championship Air Races and Air Show in September. Guillermo Parodi, UAV Navigation’s CEO and co-founder, will fly the aircraft as a pilot. His plane, nº36, dubbed “N-A-RUSH”, is a Cassutt Special III, a single-seat racing jet designed in the United States in 1951 by ex-TWA captain Tom Cassutt. Guillermo commented, “I appreciate the first-hand experience of flight-testing the company’s avionics equipment myself. It is a direct way of understanding the needs of the ultimate consumer and a fertile ground for breeding new ideas.” UAV Navigation has supplied the telemetry used in the Red Bull air shows and the camera stabilization for Moto GP. These extreme environments provide a highly visible and challenging training ground for the company’s equipment, company officials said, noting prototypes and ideas can be tested in a real and demanding environment and later translated into final products in general aviation, unmanned systems and UAV Navigation’s core markets. The Reno National Championship Air Races is the last pylon-racing event in the world. With seven classes of aircraft racing around the unique course, anywhere from 50 to 500 feet above the ground flying wing-tip to wing-tip at speeds exceeding 500 miles per hour, it is truly an event not to be missed. The plane that UAV sponsors participates in the Formula One Class. Formula One aircraft are all powered by a Continental O-200 engine. The fastest Formula One aircraft reach almost 250 mph on the 3.12-mile race course in Reno.
