HISTORIC HOUSE MUSEUMPRESERVATION PROJECT MANAGEMENT

INTERNSHIPSUMMER 2013

Historic New England seeks interns to work with the Property Care project management staff during the summer of 2013. Property Care is the team responsible for the preservation and maintenance of 36 historic house museums and their landscapes located in five New England states. The Historic New England property collection spans four centuries and is comprised of 15 National Historic Landmark sites and 28 National Register sites. Historic New England has been a leader in establishing preservation philosophy, standards and methods, and continues to provide models of historic preservation for preservation professionals, organizations and the public.

Preservation Project Management Interns will assist project management staff in documenting ongoing work at the sites. Regional applicants are welcome for projects based in Western Massachusetts, the North Shore of Massachusetts, Northern Rhode Island, and Northeastern Connecticut. No large project is identified for the Metro-Boston area however interested applicants should apply. The internship time commitment is a minimum of eight hours per week however internships are flexible and additional tasks can be added based on additional commitments of time.

Interns will begin the summer with instruction on Historic New England’s preservation philosophy and white papers, as well as our approach to project development and documentation. Interns will be assigned to appropriate projects in their chosen region where they will monitor work, attend construction meetings and document activities for the project manager’s review. Pending time commitments, interns will also work with project management staff to assess conditions and develop preservation projects for future implementation. Internship can also be combined with the Preservation Carpentry Internship or the Property Care Internship if appropriate (see separate postings).

Applicants working toward a degree in historic preservation, architecture, engineering, conservation or other related field with an interest in historic architecture and preservation are encouraged to apply.

The intern will report to construction sites in the above noted regions. Temporary workspaces will be arranged however conditions may be rustic. Interns will need to use their own computer and digital camera as required for documentation and report writing. Periodic trips to Historic New England’s Lyman Estate, located in Waltham, Mass, may be necessary for group lectures and programming. The internships are unpaid.
