Background on the Gospel Reading

Today we continue to read from Mark’s Gospel, learning more about the ministry of Jesus. Jesus cured Simon’s mother-in-law, and she immediately began to serve Jesus and his disciples. Jesus also cured many others who were brought to him, healing their illnesses and driving out demons. As we will see throughout Mark’s Gospel, Jesus did not permit the demons to speak because they knew his identity and would have revealed it to those who were present.

On the morning after this busy day, Jesus retreated in prayer, but was pursued by Simon and others who brought news that many people were looking for him. At this point in Mark’s Gospel, we begin to see a distinct role for the inner circle of Jesus’ disciples—they act as intermediaries between Jesus and the people. Jesus reports to his disciples that they need to leave Capernaum to preach in other places.

Today’s Gospel completes a picture of Jesus’ ministry: preaching, curing the sick, driving out demons, and then moving on to continue this work in another place. Mark's Gospel tells us that Jesus did this throughout Galilee.

Jesus’ compassion and healing of the sick is a sign of the Kingdom of God. The Church continues to extend Christ’s healing presence to others in its ministry to the sick. In the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick, the Church prays for spiritual and physical healing, forgiveness of sins, and comfort for those who are suffering from illness.

In today’s Gospel, we also notice the importance of prayer in Jesus’ daily life. Jesus rose early in the morning, removed himself from the crowds, and went to a deserted place to pray. When the disciples found him, he told them that it was time to move on. We believe that in his prayers Jesus found guidance and direction from God. We also bring our decision-making to God in prayer, asking for his guidance and direction in our lives.

Gossip

“You shall not go about as a talebearer among your people”. (Lev.19:16)

Gossip is one of the problems among us. It hurts others and does serious damage to people. It is a secret craving which disfigures one’s life, knowingly or unknowingly. We all become victims of gossip. God warns us to be away from the habit of gossiping. (Pro. 20:19; 11:13; Ps. 34:13; 141:3).

According to Scripture, Gossip can be defined as spreading rumors or speaking about someone maliciously behind their back or revealing secrets about someone in an inappropriate context. Psalm 15 instructs us that Gossip always remains a stumbling stone to have good relationship with God. (Ps 15:3).

First of all, gossip separates us from God and fellow human beings. In other words, gossip leads us against two greatest commandments of Christ – love of God and neighbor (Mt22:36-40). Secondly, Holy scripture admonishes us that unless we repent for the gossip and seek God’s help in turning the tongue, we will be made to answer for every gossip (Mt .12:36-37). Let us do our level best to keep away gossip from ourselves and seek God’s grace to tame our tongues.

Pamela Rose Williams helps us avoid gossip from our life by the following points:

1. Do not associate ourselves with one who is known for gossip.

2. When someone starts to gossip, change the subject.

3. If we are not part of the problem or solution, stay out of it.

Confirmation News

“Joy is found when you focus your energy on improving human dignity, human capacity and human values.” ― Amit Ray, Yoga the Science of Well-Being

Human life is far super valuable than anything in the world because in faith we know that we have been created in the image of God. Because God considered human lives more valuable He gave His Only Begotten Son for the humanity. When human life is not respected, it is God who is not respected. In our time, we witness that the human life is cheapened. We can see this in many of the major issues being debated in our society today: abortion, infanticide, euthanasia, the increase of child abuse and violence of all kinds, the routine torture of political prisoners in many parts of the world, the crime explosion, and the random violence which surrounds us. Human life should never be reduced to a thing that could be used and disposed. Amit Ray, an Indian spiritual master believes that when Human dignity is upheld, the door for joy is opened. The Bible speaks about it in different way. It calls us to love everyone even those who wrong against us.

February 4, 2018 is the “Fifth week in the Ordinary Time”. On this Sunday, we have an exciting game “Super Bowl” but our first year Confirmation Candidates will have more exciting session on “Dignity of Human Life” right after the 12 Noon Mass at the faith formation building from 1.15 PM to 2.15 PM.

All the candidates of our parish Confirmation program are required to attend any one of the weekend Masses and do the sign-up sheets kept in the vestibule.

If you have any questions or concerns, please call me on my cell 781-244-9162 or email me at [email protected]

The Fifth Sunday in Ordinary TimeFebruary 4 ~ Fifth Sunday of

Ordinary Time

Today’s Gospel recounts “a day in the life” of Jesus. We are told he visited the home of Peter, where Jesus cured Peter’s mother-in-law. While there, word spread of his presence and so the whole town came to the door bringing those who were sick with various diseases, as well as those possessed with demons – all to be cured. Jesus never turned away those who were in need of healing. In your busy life, is there someone Jesus has put in your path that needs a listening ear, a healing touch, a caring smile? Be the face of Jesus to that person today, this week.___________________________________________
