Memorial Day is for Dog Heroes Too!
Thing you may not know about Military Dogs
Dogs have been in combat with US soldiers during every major
conflict, but they were not officially recognized until WWII.
There are about 2500 dogs in active service today and about
700 deployed overseas.
They are trained in bomb, weapon and drug detection, tracking,
and to attack the enemy.
85% of military working dogs are purchased from Germany and
the Netherlands.
They aren’t all German Shepherds.
Only about 50% make it through basic training.
They suffer from PTSD (Post traumatic Stress Disorder)
Probably the most famous war dog “Stubby”, an American Pit Bull Terrier,
was the only dog to be given the rank of sergeant. Stubby was found as a
stray on the Yale campus in 1917, and smuggled to France during World War
I by his adoptive owner, Cpl. John Robert Conroy. The dog’s heroic acts
include participating in 17 battles, four offenses, and improving
troop morale.
“Smokey”, a Yorkshire Terrier who saw action in the Pacific during
World War II, was initially found in February 1944, abandoned in
a foxhole in the jungles of New Guinea. Smokey was included in a
dozen combat missions and survived more than 150 air raids.
The largest litter of puppies is 24,
born November 2004 to Tia, a
Neopolitan Mastiff owned by
Damian Ward and Anne Kellegher
of Manea, Cambridgeshire, United
Kingdom.
