In the middle of the city yet in the heart of the wilderness, the newly completed Iditarod Elementary School willbe the living room of the community. Helping establish a unique sense of place, the interior design will create afeeling of a home away from home for the students and their families. This direction for the design will assistthe administration in helping families connect to the Wasilla Community by providing a welcoming andcomfortable place to meet, support their children and gather for community functions. With thoughtful use ofthe color, texture, line and shape the interior spaces will be enlivened yet calm to support focused learning. Abeautiful and comfortable school will help the staff make the students feel valued. As the Learning Signaturebecomes more fully developed, that message will be reinforced through brand integration into differentinterior spaces and elements: the MPR, the Gymnasium and all Room Signage, to name a few.

A soft, calming yet full spectrum color scheme, using the MSBSD standard color palette, is proposed with afocus on texture and warmth for the interior finishes. The use of local woods, organic materials and patternsand excellent acoustical attenuation as well as more home than institutional appearing finishes will contributeto a more welcoming and familiar place.

The Alternative Learning spaces located in the hallways have been designed to be acoustically quiet and soundabsorbing to encourage concentration and to keep noise from disturbing adjacent classes. There has also beenan element of wonder introduced with the over scaled light shade (felt and acoustically absorbent). The twocentral Hallways also are showing a carpet pattern that helps define the MPR space but also assists the childrenin organized movement. The guardrail of the mezzanine and well as the two stairs will be a focus of integratedbrand as the Learning Signature is more fully developed. The Stairs will be designed to be inviting and lessinstitutional by using the interesting guardrail and playful color interchange on the risers. All Classrooms will bedesigned for focus, flexibility and alternate learning styles. The Applied Learning space will take advantage ofthe light from the windows and here we also propose different types of learning spaces: quiet reading areas,flexible reading/working areas and group gathering areas. The Administration spaces will be reflect the bestpractices of office environments while being inviting and comfortable for staff use and student/family visits. TheGymnasium will be more brightly designed to encourage activity and energy release by the students.All finishes proposed have been vetted for cost effectiveness, durability and ease of maintenance andincorporate the District standards or frequently used products.
