Value StoriesIt’s so easy to blame others when things go wrong. In the last few months, I’ve learned

how to take a lot on the chin. Probably more than I have my entire career. It’s definitely making me a better leader!

We’re a team, and just like a family we’re stuck with each other. If things go wrong, we need to deal with it together. And when they go right, we need to celebrate and share accomplishments. I trust my team to support each other, not to lay blame. Unfortunately, that’s not always what happens. Sometimes we blame or get blamed for mistakes or decisions that weren’t necessarily under our control at the time. Sometimes, we play defense more than we want to and we don’t actually get to enjoy the game. (I’m not good at sports analogies!)

I’m always happy when someone stands up and accepts criticism, regroups and changes course when needed and even more so, when they incorporate the team while doing it. I think all of our values, when they are truly lived and a part of our DNA make us great leaders. It’s a common theme when I read everyone’s view of our values, that they are not mutually exclusive. You can’t have one without the other. I’m sure that was done by design and not accidentally.

So to my fellow leaders I say the following: Take the hits, celebrate the wins and adjust the sales when necessary!

Hi everyone, I just have a quick little value email to start off this week. I know the big item recently has been the restructure at the top of the organization, and Steve touched this during his email last week, so I will not go into too many details.

One thing that a lot of you might not see everyday is the difference in so many procedures between brands. Here in accounting, being part of Imvescor shared services, we see these differences everyday, even though a certain brand has been accustomed to. We see on a daily basis certain tasks being done in a way that seems like duplicate work, or in a way that results on extra time being spent on something that doesn’t really offer anyone any benefits or additional information. In the end, each brand used to have its own leader who liked things to be done in a certain way.

With the new direction the company has taken, it seems like Imvescor as an organization can be run in a more efficient way, once all the information gets shared together and more things become consistent across all brands. All of this can be considered a form of growth, not in number, restaurants or any statistic like that, but possibly in a way that means a lot more, growth as in new ideas and better efficiency (growing to be better, not necessarily bigger).

There has to be a lot of trust in the former COO’s to continue to be as dedicated to all brands as they were to their own brand and finally, collaboration is needed between everyone to make this change a success.

In these uncertain times, facing fear from some and plain disappearance from others, we need to be able to smile. Tension climbs easily and rough edges rub together. I try to take opportunities in every challenge and enjoy the incredible diversity of people I have the chance to meet. There’s nothing better than a humorous touch well placed to prevent a tense situation from exploding. So let’s put aside our own fears and smile with confidence in front of our work challenges.

Value StoriesOn the plus side, I received my very first “You’re up” message from

Ron. I had heard about them, but figured maybe it was an urban legend. Oh no, they are REAL, my friends.

I might’ve had something positive to say, but I just got a $125 ticket for jaywalking this morning, and all I want to do is yell things that could only be transcribed in the following manner: ?&(%$#*$#*%$#(%$#@%$@(%$@(%($(%40.

So, um… um… wow. I can’t focus right now. Oh! That’s a value, isn’t it? (editor’s note: is thinking aloud on paper a value?)

As I’m sure most of you have heard by now, Mikes is currently overhauling its current menu. I just saw proofs of what it will look like in the dining room, and it’s beautiful! So. Go eat Mikes. We all worked really hard on this new menu, and come April 27th, we can all breathe a little easier. For now, we’re all going a little crazy and there is a lot of hair pulling – but it will be worth it. All of our focus will pay off, I’m sure.

Value StoriesHmmm… I’m not sure how to start or where this will lead. I do hope

that it won’t be taken personally by this group; although, it is because of this value group that I find myself wanting to write this value.

Over the past year since I joined this value group, I have for the most part enjoyed reading the stories that everyone has shared. I personally like the personal stories and I like that there is some banter back and forth with hockey. I find it interesting that in our daily lives we can have a conversation with family and friends and say what’s on our minds, and not type it out and send it in an email; however, when it comes to the workplace, we send emails to our entire value group to express our displeasure with another dept and/or another person. A lot of times this is the only time we talk to each other. It is my opinion that maybe these conversations should be had between the parties and not in a public form like our values.

While I appreciate and respect that everyone is entitled to their value and their opinion, I feel like there are times that what is said should be said to the person directly and not in an email to the group.

Value StoriesOur company’s value circle is a strong positive and honest tool that I naturally apply in my working and personal life. But, today I decided to stay silent… values?... I always take a deep breath before I react to something or to a situation that upsets and disappoints me, I could tell you that the application of some of our values really does not seem to be there for me TODAY… so I take a deep breath, I remain composed and I will recharge myself with enthusiasm and motivation. Being positive and motivated is the only way I know that allows me to function. Sorry for the whining… I will spring back in better spirits next time around…

Last week my daughter asked me what does it take to triumph over a challenge… I started thinking and was coming up with all sorts of answers that were long and complicated, then it dawned on me and I asked myself what does it really take to triumph… and the answer is simply “a lot of trying”.

The group might recall that a couple of days ago, Ron posted a note on St. Patrick’s Day and fun. To me this day does not represent fun but rather a day of growth. It was on this day, 2 years ago, that my dad passed away. It was on this day that I really understood the meaning of being grown up. There is not a day that I don’t think about him.

An African American will be sworn in as the 44th President of the United States and will become the most powerful man in the world. It is a day that most people thought they would never witness but a day they are all thankful has finally arrived. Humanity, once again, proves that it can overcome anything by being determined-FOCUSED-RESPONSIVE and COLLABORATIVE. Putting these same values in our own context will help us overcome the tough times ahead.

Yes we can… sell a lot of chicken and pizza.

Value StoriesToday, I spent the better part of my day at head office for our weekly

meeting and after that I had my evaluation, which turned out really positive. I was really happy about the outcome and I was able to enjoy that for about 2 seconds. The Director of Operations gave me enough work for a week and of course, he needed it before the end of the day. I headed back to the call center and proceeded to do all the reports. I was so focused in this work I completely lost track of time. I was working on the reports for over 4 hours, at 5:48 pm, I received an email from Ron Magruder; I was in total shock! It’s not everyday I receive an email from him, so I paid no attention to the subject at that point, I just went straight to the email it said: “What happened?”

I must have stared at that email for 5 minutes; it became about 20 degrees hotter in the office. At that point, I called in the supervisor on duty, I asked if anything happened at the call center that I should know about; her response was no. I called the director to find out if anything was going on: no answer, I called the assistant manager and the other supervisors: no answer.

Well, let me tell you it was the longest 20 minutes of my life! So, I decided to read the email once more, it was titled values. You have no idea how silly I felt. At that moment, the director called me. I was so baffled, I proceed to explain the whole situation; he laughed for 5 minutes. Great!!! I responded to Ron’s email 24 minutes later; he never knew what I experienced! He does now!

Conclusion: never loose FOCUS
