Tavelli, Sue Watson EDITOR: Laura J. Johnson www.nvcs.stier.org Volume XXXII, Issue 3 Winter 2016-2017 SUPERINTENDENT’S MESSAGE It almost defies belief that we are into the year 2017. Hopefully, you had the opportunity to enjoy the Holidays with family and friends. The holiday season is always a special time in our buildings as the excitement of the students can be felt all week leading up to break. I hope it was equally special in your homes. By now, it has been several weeks since our Varsity Football team won the New York State Class C Championship. It would be hard to write this article without referencing such a monumen- tal achievement. However, I think it is important to point out that what really happened is bigger than football. Without question, we witnessed a group of fine young men persevere and achieve at the highest level of interscholastic competition. They and their peers demonstrated grace, humil- ity, dedication, and an incredible work ethic. But it was so much more. What happened this fall was a testament to the character of our entire community. It seemed like every day that I drove to and from work, I would see more and more “Cardinal Pride” signs popping up in front yards. Every Sat- urday, our crowds grew a little bigger. Every day in our buildings, from NTH to the High School, our kids grew more and more excited. This doesn’t have to end because the football season is over. From our musicals to math class, our kids are doing great things on a daily basis. When I de- scribe some of these achievements to other Su- perintendents, the response I almost always get is: “Really? You’re doing that in Newark Valley? Wow.” This is the result of our kids’ hard work and the values their families have instilled in them. It is the result of a staff that keeps students first at all times, and a Board of Education that truly believes in creating opportunity. It is the result of a com- munity who is proud of their schools and wants the best for their children and their future. I’m proud that my own children have had the chance to be a part of this school and commu- nity. From my daughter in 12th grade, to my son in 9th, to my son in kindergarten, we couldn’t ask for more. This is a special place, and the pride is real. The more we continue to demonstrate that pride, the more our successes will grow- and the more we will secure the future for our kids. I wish you a Happy and prosperous 2017. Sincerely, Ryan Dougherty, Superintendent of Schools Newark Valley Cardinals Shine in the Athletic Arena and in the Classrooms!
