Logan, Utah: Home to Utah State University, it’s often equated with the Spectrum and its shrieking basketball fans. But it’s also home to the Ellen Eccles The-

atre and a quieter, more dignified, yet no less devoted group of fans: the patrons of the Utah Festival Opera and Musical Theatre Company.

Now in its 20th season, the Utah Festival Opera was founded in 1993 by internationally acclaimed opera perform-er and Logan native Michael Ballam. The founding seemed like a natural next step for Ballam, who organized efforts to save the building then called the Capitol Theater in 1988. Once the building was restored and renamed the Ellen Eccles Theatre, Ballam said, it needed an opera company to put it to good use.

As a professional in the opera world, Ballam said he knew from experience how not to run an opera company. Since the company began, he’s succeeded with the help of friends in the industry, and 365 days of prayer each year.

His efforts have paid off, however, as the opera company has thrived over the years. The company brings in perform-ers and patrons from all over the world, and is hailed as one of the top tourist attractions in Northern Utah. According to Managing Director Gary Griffin, the festival also brings $10 million into the Logan economy each summer.

The Opera Festival starts the Wednes-day after Independence Day and runs for five weeks. This works well because most major opera companies don’t perform during the summer, which gives renowned performers the opportunity to spend their summers performing in Lo-gan, rather than temporarily unemployed.

The festival offers four major produc-

tions — two operas and two musicals — each year. It also hosts numerous special performances and concerts, classes, workshops, and the International Opera Competition. In all, Griffin said, the company presents 160 events each summer. To stage their productions, the company brings in about 60 singers and actors, after holding auditions in 28 cities. Each performer is involved in 2-4 productions. The company also brings in 60 musicians for the orchestra, and an additional 180 people who direct shows, conduct music, build scenery, and design and make the costumes.

The cast and crew arrive at the begin-ning of June, when they start a whirlwind six weeks of rehearsal. The cast arrives with their lines and music memorized

and ready to go, said Ballam, so that they can work to polish the performances.

The most popular show the Opera Company has ever produced, agreed Ballam and Griffin, was “My Fair Lady” in 2012. The musical theater productions seem to sell more tickets than the operas, Griffin said, and other notable musicals included “Camelot” in 2009, “Man of La Mancha” in 2006, and “Fiddler on the Roof” in 2003. “Fiddler” was such a success that the company is producing it again this year, starring Ballam as Tevya. This performance will be special, as Bal-lam will be tutored by Sheldon Harnick, who wrote the lyrics for the show.

The shows are chosen at least a year in advance, and Ballam tries to choose works that have immediacy to the public.

The show goes onOver 20 years, Logan's 'UFO' has become big draw

At left, in a Herald Journal photo by Jennifer Meyers, Kristopher Irmiter rehearses for the op-era "Faust" with the Utah Festival Opera and Musical Theatre at Ellen Eccles Theatre. Irmiter was performing the role of Mephistopheles. Following page, members of the cast rehearse for a performance of "Faust."

Page 8: Views of Cache Valley

Ballam chose “Nabucco” for a perfor-mance in 2002, for example, because he felt the themes resonated with the trauma of 9/11. This year, the company presents “The Flying Dutchman” and “Otello,” to honor the 200th birthdays of Richard Wag-ner and Giuseppe Verdi, respectively.

Griffin said the company usually choos-es classic musicals, such as those written by Rodgers and Hammerstein. “We look at what’s suitable for our audience,” he said. “We’re not going to put on anything foul.”

The company has big plans. For the past several years, they’ve been renovating the Utah Theatre, around the corner from the Eccles Theatre. This is a more intimate venue, Ballam said, and when it opens in 2014, he hopes to add more shows.

“The Utah Theatre will add a differ-ent dimension to the festival,” Ballam said. The new space can be used to stage small plays that coincide with operas, like “Amadeus” with “The Marriage of Figaro.” While the Ellen Eccles Theatre is well-suited for grand musicals and spectacle, Ballam said, the Utah Theatre will be better for productions such as “The Fantasticks,” “I Do I Do” and “She Loves

Me.” In 2014, the company will become the first opera company to stage “Les Mis-erables.” Ballam said the show will use full orchestration and “actors and singers with glorious voices.”

The ultimate goal for the company, Bal-lam said, is to provide quality entertain-ment, and they’ve certainly done that.

“It is hands-down the biggest tourism draw in Cache Valley,” said Julie Hol-list, director of the Cache Valley Visitors Bureau. She said visitors from all over the world are stunned by the high quality of the shows. The performances are afford-able as well, Ballam said, and patrons can participate for an entire week for the price of a single opera performance in a place like New York or Vienna.

In 2009, when the company staged “Cavalleria Rusticana,” a woman came from Washington with her husband. She told Ballam that seeing that particular show performed live was on her husband’s bucket list, and he wept through the entire performance.

After the never-ending work, Ballam said, “That kind of makes it worth doing.”

Commercial development

When researchers at Utah State University devel-op the latest advance-ments in energy or engineering, the results can have far-reaching implications for busi-

nesses in Utah and right here in Cache Valley.Across a range of industries, USU’s office of

Commercial Enterprises is playing a key role in commercializing tomorrow’s advanced technol-ogy. Some of the group’s most recent projects could change how buses roll down city avenues, how office towers consume electricity and how even a tiny thread of spider silk could make a better airbag for your car.

The Commercial Enterprises team facilitates the collaboration between researchers and industry partners around the world to make these and other improvements to everyday life while also addressing today’s pressing global issues like climate change and efficient energy use. Program leaders say the goal of the Commercial Enterprises group is to couple USU’s intellec-tual assets with established business networks to create new revenue streams and enhance the schools already robust research profile.

“The unique pairing between our researchers

and business development officers helps gener-ate strong industry partnerships,” said Robert T. Behunin, USU vice president of commercializa-tion and regional development. “We then work closely with these partners to help gain funding and drive our research to address the actual market needs.”

One of the fundamental concepts to the Com-mercial Enterprises process, Behunin added, is to identify research opportunities that help make a positive impact on a global society and make them economically viable by incorporating top management talent and proper legal protection.

One such project still under development is the GeoMetWatch initiative — a next-generation weather prediction technology that designers say can significantly improve accuracy in predicting hurricane paths and create more advanced severe weather and tornado warnings. The project could generate millions in economic growth and create more than 200 engineering jobs in Utah.

The Commercial Enterprises team is also working on a potash project that could mitigate the high environmental costs of manufacturing fertilizers; and another proposal, nearly ready for the commercial market, could translate to less energy waste in high-rise commercial build-ings.

The Problem:

sixty percent of building owner

and large tenant energy costs go

to lighting and hVaC.

Presently, buildings lack

sufficient intelligence or

knowledge of how spaces

are being used by occu-

pants.

Current sensors provide

insufficient data for these

systems and buildings are

ers, the occutel camera-

based sensor will provide the

technology that in turn will

lead to savings upwards of

fifty percent on heating and

of the technology is that it

works with low-cost, off-the-

shelf hardware, which drives

down costs and makes its

price point competitive in

today’s market.

of municipal and industrial waste

streams through the production of

valuable bioproducts.

enable living organisms to transform

raw materials into environmentally

friendly products.

Produce renewable biofuels and

bioproducts from multiple sustainable

feedstock sources.

Provide prototyping and production

capabilities for the institute’s centers.

The synthetic biomanufacturing

institute at Utah state University is

comprised of three main centers, the

ergy Center. The institute provides

an infrastructure that enhances

The Problem:

Diesel-based transit vehicles cre-

ate too much pollution in urban

centers.

Deployment of electrically pow-

ered mass transit systems has been

delayed by inadequate vehicle

charging capabilities.

Current electric vehicle solutions

do not efficiently utilize the existing

grid infrastructure.

The large batteries required

to power electric buses are very

heavy and costly.

waVe, inc., is a Utah state Uni-

versity spin-out company focused

on demonstrating the technology

and economic feasibility of wire-

less power transfer for a number of

applications including mass transit,

industrial systems, and light-duty

vehicles. The primary obstacle to

electric transportation has been

battery life, size, and weight. waVe

worked in cooperation with the

UsTar advanced Transportation

institute to develop the aggie bus,

a market-ready product that retires

significant technical risk. The bus is

a robust prototype that transfers 25

kilowatts of power over an air gap

from a pad mounted on the under-

carriage of the bus and another

pad mounted in the roadway at

specified bus stop locations. as

the bus stops to pick up passen-

gers, power can be transferred to

the battery with approximately 90

percent efficiency even if the pads

are misaligned by as much as six

inches. The ability to recharge the

battery slowly throughout the day

tackles the problem of heavy and

expensive electric vehicles, and al-

lows the bus to run its route all day

without significant downtime for

recharging.

The Commercial Enterprises team will continue to identify Utah State’s most promising research platforms and part-ner them with experts from

around the globe to help create practi-cal, environmentally sustainable, and energy efficient solutions to real world problems. Commercial Enterprises is a one-stop-shop created to streamline the process of turning research results into marketable business solutions.

One such example is WAVE, Inc., a Utah State University spin-out company working to solve the problems associ-ated with heavy electric vehicle batter-ies. The company is a key partner in the wireless power transfer bus technology developed here in Logan and could be a future Utah employer as wireless trans-portation projects become a reality.

The University of Utah, for example, has announced its plans to use one of the electric buses on its campus beginning this year, and WAVE company execu-tives said they are also working on wire-less transportation projects in other parts of the U.S. and in the Czech Republic.

The Commercial Enterprises of-fice works closely with the Utah State University Research Foundation, and USU has an established track record of

successfully turning innovative work in the laboratory into successful commer-cial developments.

For decades the USU Research Foundation has had notable success, largely due to the more than 50-year-old Space Dynamics Laboratory. This technical laboratory and others like it have become renowned and prosperous institutions. Drawing on the success of the Research Foundation’s trusted laboratory experience, Commercial Enterprises will work to facilitate the development of university intellectual property into commercial endeavors with industry, venture capitalists and commercial partners.

USU has already established a track record of successfully turning innova-tive work in the laboratory into success-ful commercial developments.

“We are excited to show the world what researchers at Utah State Uni-versity are capable of,” said Robert T. Behunin, vice president for commercial-ization and regional development. “Our job is not only to continually enhance USU’s intellectual property portfolio but also to provide our researchers with the funding and laboratories they need to keep on innovating.”

Set against the backdrop of the Wellsville Mountains, a glass barn shines in the sun along Highway 89/91. This “barn” is actually the Welcome Center of the American West Heritage Center, a living-history mu-

seum in Cache Valley that recreates history from 1820 to about 1920.

According to Wikipedia, living history “incorporates historical tools, activities and dress (in) an interactive presentation that seeks to give observers and participants a sense of stepping back in time.” The Heri-tage Center interprets four different periods in Cache Valley including Native American life, the mountain man era, pioneer life and farm life in 1917.

Daily AdventuresDuring the summer and fall seasons the

Heritage Center is open for Daily Adven-tures, and guests can wander the grounds and meet interpreters dressed in period

costume. Stand back and listen as they ex-plain different ways of life, or roll up your sleeves and “Experience it!” yourself.

In partnership with the Northwestern Band of the Shoshone Nation, which provides most interpreters for the Native American site, guests can learn about the Shoshone who originally inhabited Cache Valley. Step inside an authentic tipi, make pemmican, or learn about the nomadic lifestyle of the Shoshone before the arrival of Western settlers.

Also learn about the Bear River Massacre that occurred Jan. 29, 1893, when the US Army attacked the Northwestern Band at nearby Franklin, Idaho.

At the Mountain Man site guests might be surprised to see the interpreter dressed in a wide-brimmed hat instead of a coon-skin cap, because, contrary to popular belief, mountain men did not typically wear many fur accessories. At this venue guests can haggle at the trader tent, throw a tomahawk, or try their hand at starting a fire with flint and steel.

The 1917 Farm is a working farm where chores must be done every day. If you arrive at opening time you can help milk the cow, which “always leaves a lasting impression, especially with children,” says education director Nelda Ault. There are eggs to be gathered, chickens to be fed, and laundry to wash and iron. And every day a meal is prepared in the farmhouse kitchen on the wood-burning stove. At the Pioneer Settle-ment guests can also help with the cooking though it’s in Dutch ovens or over an open fire. This site also features a half dugout and a 12-by-12-foot cabin built according to specifications in the Homestead Act. There is also wool to process, whether it's shearing by hand, cleaning, carding or spinning.

Activities change with the season, so guests visit again and again. Daily Ad-ventures also include train rides and the Woodwright Shop, which demonstrates old-fashioned carpentering techniques.

Festivals and eventsSeveral times a year the Heritage Center

also presents festivals that include special events and food and craft vendors in addi-

tion to living history. In the spring is the very popular Baby Animal Days, where guests can cuddle chicks, duck-lings, bunnies, pigs, sheep, and goats. For the last few years baby bears from Bear World, near Rexburg, Idaho, have also been available to view.

Celebrate July 24th at the Spirit of ’47 Pioneer Day Festival. Take part in the Bridgerland games by competing in several contests including pie-eating, two-man saw or building a fire using flint and steel. Or stay and join the pro-gressive handcart dinner, where guests pull handcarts to different stations to enjoy each course of their dinner.

In August the Utah Scottish Associa-tion presents the Celtic Festival and

Highland Games. Watch people com-pete in the caber toss, hammer throw, or the sheaf toss. Enjoy bag-pipe bands, vendors and demonstrators such as the Society of Creative Anachronism that comes out to teach swordplay.

At the Fall Harvest Festival guests may help thresh wheat using a 100-year-old steam engine. There is also cider pressing, corn shelling, and pumpkin carving. Or spend the day perusing the corn maze and other activities, including a hay castle, gourd launcher and giant slide.

Bundle up to enjoy the Frontier Christ-mas Festival, which features Chocolate Christmas and a live nativity, vendors selling Christmas crafts out in the Livery

Stable, or stop by the farmhouse, where interpreters will be making waffles and singing music from 1917. Also stop by the Welcome Center to enjoy the crafts there.

Evenings OutThe Heritage Center also presents

evening events. Their Valentine’s Eve-ning of Elegance and Magic, featuring dinner and a magic show, is a romantic evening for couples. The Christmas Feast is fun for the whole family. A Star Party is held at the height of the Perseides meteor shower in August. For a thrilling experience, come out for the Haunted Hollow in October. “We’re doing pretty well with our scare factor,” says Ault, mentioning that some people have liter-

ally been scared off their feet.Just for KidsThe Heritage Center offers several

programs just for little ones, including an extensive education program for school kids of all ages, complete with numer-ous lesson plans available online. During the summer months they offer summer camps, lasting one to four days, and tea parties at the farmhouse to teach the importance of etiquette.

Other ServicesThe Heritage Center also offers build-

ing and site rentals and help in planning events, as well as numerous volunteer opportunities. For more information, visit www.awhc.org.
