Party Time
The Annual Awards Banquet and
Volunteer Recognition on January 19th was a
lovely evening. For a change we didn’t have
to worry about weather conditions-how re-
freshing! I think Mother Nature gave us a
reprieve for one year to make up for the ones
where it was bitter cold, dangerous roads or
worst of all-postponed!
Once again, River Creek Country
Club was a picturesque venue with ample
room for both the dinner tables and our silent
auction. And speaking of room-we had over
160 guests! That’s an all time record. They
assured us that it would be possible to add a
few more tables if our attendance continues to
grow.
This was the third year we held a
raffle with baskets which were hand made
and donated by VADA/Nova members. There
was everything from show supplies to
chocolates to New Orleans memorabilia to
kitty goodies. We will definitely continue the
idea next year.
This year’s Champions received gear
bags (licensed shows) and helmet carrying
bags (schooling shows). Reserve Champions
received picture frames. There were also door
prizes for each table.
There were many people who helped
make the evening a success. In particular
we’d like to thank:
Sheli King (overall organizer), Kelly
Foltman (dinner reservations and on site
silent auction) Holly Wilmoth (silent
auction), Diann Landau (MC), Michelle
Lachner and Donna Gatchell (volunteer
awards) , Maryann Reichel (raffle
baskets) and Katharine Holl
(photographer). They are a big part of
why the event was so successful.
Thank you also to the volunteers who
helped out for the evening-setting up
the silent auction, checking people in,
selling raffle tickets, checking people
out at the end of the auction. Names of
all are listed on page 9.
Next month we will list all
those who generously donated items
for both the raffle and silent auction, as
well as our Special Award sponsors.
The funds that we raise go towards our
programs and educational events such
as the winter unmounted clinics (free
to members) which you can read about
on page 4.
For those of you who attended,
we hope you had an enjoyable evening.
For those who didn’t attend, consider it
for next year. It’s a great time to get to
know some of your fellow VADA/
Nova members.

SUMMARY MINUTES
VADA/Nova Board Meeting
Jan. 14, 2013– Morven Park Lounge
The meeting commenced at 7:20 p.m. There
were fourteen Board members present and two excused.
December 2012 meeting minutes were approved by the
Board.
Treasurer’s report: Dilly reported that the reconciled balance
is $74,631.31, and the Special Account balance is $ 7884.82
Schooling Shows: Sheli asked about changing the ribbons for
the Schooling Championship Show for the future. Since there
will no longer be mounted Awards Ceremonies, neck sashes
will no longer be appropriate. She suggested instead that the
ribbons for Champion and Reserve Champion could have
extra long streamers. The Board agreed with this idea.
Jessie said that most volunteer positions have been filled for
the March show. A 2nd judge is still needed for the May
Compass Rose show.
Membership/Newsletter: Barb reported that as of 1/13/2013
there were 204 members, the same as this time last year. Barb
will send a renewal reminder email to past members, and
there will be membership forms at the banquet.
Education/Clinics: Alison reported that the winter clinics are
starting to get people signed up, but it’s slow going. A flyer
will be displayed at the banquet to remind people of the 3
upcoming clinics. So far 8 riders have signed up for the
Fix-A-Test with Linda Zang in March, at different levels. The
Morven Park food vendor may be available, and drinks and
snacks will be available.
Jacquie Brooks clinic: Morven Park will be available, but
their Brew Fest will also be happening, so people attending
the clinic will have to allow more time due to traffic
conditions.
2013 Banquet: The Board discussed the schedule for the
banquet. Next year the Board will try to put together a slide
show with photos of members and their horses. There will be
more than 160 people attending the banquet this year which is
the most we’ve ever had.
Silent Auction: Sheli reported that more items are coming in,
but that more are needed. Sheli emailed professional instruc-
tors regarding donating lessons, and several agreed to donate
their services. These will have expiration dates, as will
schooling passes for Morven Park.
New business: Dianne Boyd saw a suitable copier for the
licensed shows at Office Depot for $130; this copier can print
up to 11x14” which is what is needed for score sheets and
tests. The Board discussed spending up to $200 for a new
printer that can print up to 11x14”. Diann Landau moved
to approve this motion, Michelle Lachner seconded it, and
the Board approved the motion unanimously.
Alice Quinn wants to donate a used printer to be used as a
back-up printer. Alison will talk to Dianne about this. Barb
moved that VADA/Nova purchase a new printer for
scoring, and Diann Carpenter seconded the motion. The
Board approved unanimously.
The meeting adjourned at 8:53 p.m.
The next Board meeting is Monday, February 11, 2013 at
Morven Park.
Respectfully submitted,
Diann Landau
From the editor:
My proofreading skills for the January
issue apparently went on vacation.
There were 2 errors for which I apologize.
Patty Knight should have been listed as the
Non-Board member recipient of Tank’s Thanks
and Caroline York was an Above and Beyond
volunteer in the Prix St. Georges category.

a live demonstration of how to do bit checks. We’ll then move indoors and have sessions for scribing and
scoring. Come for all or just one.
Please RSVP Barb Pickering at [email protected] to let her know if you will be attending. We need
to make sure we have enough test copies and calculators.

This session is open to all judges and L Graduates and will be lead by” R” judge

Thursday Feb. 7th at 7pm – “Equine acupuncture and chiropractic: What is it and how can it benefit the horse?”
From the” temperamental” mare to the stiff sided riding horse or the performance horse that “just
can’t come through”; learn about conditions which may benefit from acupuncture and chiropractic.
Dr. Kelly Foltman will spend an evening discussing the use of these two therapies in the performance horse.
Dr. Foltman is the owner of Dunthorpe Farm Veterinary Services in Purcellville, VA, a specialty
practice offering acupuncture and chiropractic in small and large animals, and dentistry in horses. After earn-
ing her DVM from the University of Illinois, and her Masters in Equine Nutrition from Cornell University, Kelly studied acu-
puncture at Chi Institute and chiropractic at Options for Animals. Prior to moving to Virginia, she practiced equine veterinary
medicine in Upstate New York for nineteen years. In addition to her veterinary career, Kelly is an avid rider.
RSVP’s in advance are encouraged (but not required). To RSVP, email Barb Pickering at
[email protected] to let her know if you will be attending. It will help us plan refreshments!
The first two sessions will be held at the Best Western Hotel in Leesburg (726 East Market St.) and all
three sessions are free to members. (Non members are welcome for $10 per session) And, since this is a
VADA/Nova activity, snacks will, of course, be provided.

In next month’s newsletter we will acknowledge all our generous sponsors,
and donors for the special awards, silent auction, door prizes and basket raffle.
Dear Editor,
My name is Rosie and, yes, that's me in the
picture with the stubby tail. I'm checking out the cat
basket my mom won at the banquet. My mom raved
on and on about how great the banquet was and how
hard the banquet committee had worked. She said the
silent auction was great fun and she won these neat red
boots that are for her other friend, Samba. That mare
will be even more stuck up being the fashionista that
she is.
I guess humans like the same things cats do:
Good food; Good fun; and,
more important, good
friends! Thanks for my cat
basket and my mom thanks
the committee for the
wonderful banquet.
Sincerely,
Rosie Conk
VADA/Nova thanks Katharine Holl, who donated her

Member of the Month Our Member of the Month for February is
Lauren Dearlove. Lauren lives in Lovettsville, Virginia on
her parents’ farm with 3 dogs, many cats, and 25 horses. She
also spends some of her time in West Virginia with her
boyfriend, Andy.
Lauren started riding at age 3 when she accompanied her older sister. She rode at a hunter barn, but when the
family moved to the Ft. Riley, Kansas military base, Lauren
switched to foxhunting and eventing for awhile. While at
Ft. Riley she attended a clinic with the late Lowell Boomer,
founder of the USDF.
Lauren switched to dressage about 20 years ago when
she started breeding and working with young horses. She
worked for a time at Hilltop Farm and with Suzanne Quarles in
Maryland before setting up her own breeding and training barn
in Lovettsville. Lauren has always enjoyed working with young
horses; her 1st pony was a 3 year old- when Lauren was only
6 years old herself!
She says there hasn’t been any real “high point” but that
every day brings something different- meeting new people and
working with young horses. She said that every little “win” is a
big deal.
Lauren’s favorite VADA/Nova job is ring maintenance-
she likes to know that everything looks good, especially since
she’s usually showing. She also likes the Behind-the-Scene at
the Youth Team Competitions. Lauren’s is a familiar face at the
VADA/Nova shows, and a welcome member of the dressage community.
