Role of an OPO
Oversee the organ donation process – Consent/authorization, donor management, organ
allocation, transportation, surgical recovery – 85% of organs recovered transplanted at UWHC
Hospital development – Generate referrals from donor hospitals, educate and train
healthcare professionals, monthly death chart reviews Public education and enrollment in first person authorization
registry Donor family follow-up and donor family/recipient
correspondence Data reporting & regulatory compliance Service coordination with tissue and eye banks
Regulated by CMS and UNOS, Accredited by AOPO

Mission
The Forward Focus Collaborative is aimed at moving a donation process that works in silos
to a process that has a shared vision, collaboration and accountability across the donor hospital, OPO and transplant center.
Collaborative Aim
• True conversion rate of 90%
• Increase the number of donors to 180
• Save 120 more lives each year
• Provide better care for patients and families by working collectively and sharing best practices
