Using Flashcards

Size: According to the type of grouping and the activity.

Meaning: The picture must be clear.

Types: Depends on the age and ability of the group.

• Only illustrations.

• Only words.

• Both illustrations and words.

Sources: Drawings, magazines or… the internet.

• Show and say.Use different techniques to present and revise vocabulary.

• Odd one out.Students have to identify the flashcard that doesn’t belong to the set.

• What’s missing?Present a set of flashcards on the board. Ask the students to close their eyes and quickly remove one of them. They have to guess which one is missing.

• Slowly, slowly…The flashcard is completely covered and the students have to guess whilst the teacher slowly uncovers it.

• Memory game.Place the cards facing down on a table. Players choose two cards and if they make a pair (word and picture) they keep them.

• True or false?Show the flashcard and say a statement. Students have to say “true or false”. Encourage them to correct the false one.

• Flashcard whispers.Divide the class into two groups. Play Chinese Whispers showing a flashcard to the first pupil. The last one runs to write the message on the board.
