1.1 Background of the Research
Vocabulary is one of the three language components is vocabulary. Itis one of the language components and that no language exists withoutwords (Napa (1991:6). It means that vocabulary plays an important role inlistening, speaking, reading and writing.
The researcher take software to improve Vocabulary based onexperience when as a learner, that learn using multimedia in software ismore enthusiastic and dynamic than textbooks, activities and lessons in thetextbooks are presented in a way which is helpful for enhancing anddesigning different computer programs that make learning more
enthusiastic and dynamic (Klassen and Milton (1999) and Witt (1999) andHegelheimer and Tower (2004)). Software can be operate in computer soteacher is more helpful when teach use computer as we can call ComputerAssisted Language Learning (CALL). GDavies (2001),

In this case the researcher uses Eurotalk Flashcards software to
enhance learners in experimental research. Eurotalk Flashcards software
uses picture and sound, such as games, and quizzes to teach students new
words and to help retain the information the students have learned. It also
helps the students to check the pronunciations of the vocabulary by using
sound and sound recorder.
1.2 Problems of the Research
Based on the background of the research above, the problem of the
research can be formulated as: Is there any significant effect of usingEurotalk Flashcards software in the seventh grade students vocabulary
achievement at SMP Negeri 2 Ambulu in the 2013/2014 academic year?

1.3 The Scope of The Research
The scope of the research is limited to the students vocabulary
achievement of nouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs. The materials are
limited to the themes which are taught to the seventh grade of SMP Negeri
2 Ambulu in the 2013/2014 academic year in the first semester. Thesubjects of the research are limited to the seventh grade of SMP Negeri 2
Ambulu in the 2013/2014 academic year.

1.3.2 Vocabulary Achievement
Vocabulary achievement refers to the level or amount of knowledge
of vocabulary after learning vocabulary by using Eurotalk Flashcards
software. In this research, it refers to the mastery of words covering nouns,
verbs, adjectives and adverbs, the researcher take a large vocabulary basedon syllabus on seventh grade student and the material from Eurotalk
Flashcards. The students scores of vocabulary post-test indicates the
students vocabulary achievement.

1.4 Objective of the Research
In accordance with the research problems, the objective of this
research is to investigate the significant effect of using Eurotalk Flashcards
software on the seventh grade students vocabulary achievement at SMP
Negeri 2 Ambulu in the 2013/2014 academic year1.5 Significance of the Research
The results of this research are expected to be beneficial for the
following people:
1.5.1 For English Teachers
Hopefully the results of the research can inspire and provide
information to English teachers to increase their knowledge about the
technique, method, or material of teaching, especially in teaching
vocabulary. Thus, the teacher can also help the students to enlarge their
vocabulary.

2.1 The Definition of Vocabulary
Vocabulary is an important component in English language
learning, because it appears in every skill of language such as
listening, speaking, reading and writing.
Stahl (2005) in Diamond and Burton (2006) says that
vocabulary is the knowledge of words and word meanings.

2.2 The Classification of Vocabulary
There are two classes of vocabulary: large vocabulary and small
vocabulary (William 1970:41). The large vocabulary includes nouns,
verbs, adjectives, and adverbs. Meanwhile, small vocabulary consists of
preposition, pronouns, conjunction, articles and interjections.This research focuses only on large vocabulary, because based on
interview with teacher and the material given for seventh grade students of
junior school

McWhorter (2001:395) that nouns are classified as proper, common,collective, concrete, abstract, countable, and non- countable, and alsocompound:
2.2.2 Verbs
According to McWhorter (200: 399-400), there are three kinds ofverb namely action verbs, linking verbs, and helping verbs (also known asauxiliary verb).
2.2.3 Adjectives
Adjective is a word that can modify noun. Thompson and Martinet(1986:33) classify adjectives into six types, they are: Demonstrativeadjective, Distributive adjectives, Quantitative adjectives, Qualitativeadjectives, Interrogative adjectives, and Possessive adjectives

Thomson and Marthinet (1986:55) classify adverbs into eight kinds:
Adverbs of manner, Adverbs of place and direction, Adverbs of time,
Adverbs of frequency, Adverbs of emphasize, Adverbs of degree, Adverbs

Students
The research takes a large vocabulary in SMP Negeri 2 Ambulu for
the vocabulary material, based on the syllabus in seventh grade students.
The Eurotalk software themes are Vocabulary A, Vocabulary B,Vocabulary C , Colors, Plurals, Professions, Actions, Positions, and places.
The research focus on professions and places based on interview
with a teacher that a theme is recommended professions and places.

2.5 Vocabulary Achievement
Vocabulary is one of the major elements of language because it
covers words which will enable people to communicate with others.
Achievement is defined as the amount or level of learning that astudent has acquired. Procter (1981:8) states that achievement is something
successfully finished or gained especially through skills and hard work.

3.1 Research Design
Research design is a strategy to arrange the setting of a research to
get valid data that matches with the variable and the objective of the
research (Arikunto, 2006:44). The design that is will be use in this research
is experimental research design. This design is chosen because theresearcher wants to know whether Eurotalk Flashcard software has a
significant effect on the seventh grade studentsvocabulary achievement at
SMP Negeri 2 Ambulu or not.
The research design of this study is quasi experimental research
using posttest only control group design. Posttest-Only Control GroupDesign is a type of experimental design in which the experimental and
control groups are measured and compared after implementation of an
intervention

This research design will uses two classes as experimental group andcontrol group from the eight available classes of the seventh gradein SMP
Negeri 2 Ambulu in 2013/2014 academic year which will be determined
by cluster random sampling method.
The first class will be chosen is treated as the experimental group andthe second class will be treated as the control group. In this research, the
experimental group is given a treatment by using Eurotalk Flashcard
software to enlarge their vocabulary achievement; meanwhile, the control
group will receives no treatment, which means that class will be taught
vocabulary by using common technique used by the English teacher in thatschool, that is, by using question and answer technique, and lecturing
technique. Then, the two groups will be given a post test. The result of the
post test will be analyzed by using t-test formula.

The procedures of the research design are as follows:
Administering the homogeneity test of the population to know the homogeneity of the
population, and then analyzing the result by using ANOVA formula.
Determining the experimental group and the control group randomly by lottery.
Giving the treatment that is teaching vocabulary by giving Eurotalk Flashcard software to the
experimental group, while the control group will be taught by using conventional techniquethat is question-answer technique and lecturing technique. The teaching learning process will
be given two times to each group, experimental and control groups based on the theme that
researcher will use to teaching.
Administering a try out to establish validity, reliability and index difficulty of the teacher-
made test and analyzing the result. Giving a posttest to the experimental group and the
control group.
Applying independent sample t-test of 5% significance level by using SPSS to find out the
mean difference of both groups. Then, they are compared to know whether or not there is an
effect of using Eurotalk Flashcard software on the seventh grade students vocabulary
achievement at SMP Negeri 2 Ambulu in the 2012/2013 academic Year.
Drawing a conclusion from the analysis to answer the research problem.
All of the data collected will be analyzed by using computerized statistic (SPSS), byusing t-test formula.

3.2 Area Determination Methods
Area determination method is one of the methods that is important to
determine before the researcher undertakes the research. Purposive method
will be used in this research to determine the research area based on the
certain purpose (Arikunto, 2006:140).There are two reasons why this school is purposively chosen. The
first reason is based on the interview to the English teacher, Eurotalk
Flashcard software has never been used to teach vocabulary in this school
by the English teacher of the seventh grade. The second reason is that the
permission to conduct a research in this school is gotten because both theEnglish teacher and the school principal want to know the effect of using
Eurotalk Flashcard software in teaching vocabulary.

3.3 Respondent Determination Method
Respondents can be the samples of the population. The respondents
of this research are the seventh year of SMP Negeri 2 Ambulu in the
2013/2014 academic year. The seventh year students of SMP Negeri 2
Ambulu in the 2013/2014 are divided into 8 classes VII A, VII B, VII C,VII D, VII E, VII F, VII G, and VII H. Each class consisted of 40-45
students.
The respondents of this research will be taken by using cluster
random sampling after the researcher analyze the students vocabulary
scores from the homogeneity test by using ANOVA formula (SPSSApplication). Since the populations are homogenous, the experimental
group and the control group are determined by lottery.

3.4 Data Collection Methods
Data collection method is systematic standard procedures to get the dataneeded. In this research, the data consists of primary and supporting data.Vocabulary test is the method used to collect the primary data, while interviewand documentation are the methods used to collect the supporting data. Thefollowing parts discuss the methods that will be used in this research.
3.4.1 Test
Vocabulary test will be used to get the primary data. Arikunto(2006:150) defines test as a set of questions, exercises or other instrumentswhich are used to measure skill, knowledge, intelligence and aptitude of anindividual or groups. Then, McMillan (1996:114). In this research, theresearcher will use teacher-made test for post test.
In conducting the vocabulary achievement test, the researcher willestablish the researcher-made test in the form of objective test. It meansthat the researcher will constructs the vocabulary test by himself, anddiscusses it with the English teacher and both of the advisors

The objective test is in the form of multiple choices that consist of 4
options are given to the respondents as the post test. The test consists of 20
items, covering nouns (5 items), verbs (5 items), adjectives (5 items), and
adverbs (5 items). In relation to the scoring, the researcher uses the
following formula to score.

So that, the maximum total score of the test will be 100. The time
allocation for doing the test is 30 minutes.

3.4.2 Interview
Arikunto (2006:227) states that interview is a dialogue between aninterviewer and the interviewee to get the information that supports the
primary data. In this research, semi-structured interview will be conductedto the English teacher to get supporting data concerning with the
information needed about the students vocabulary achievement, themethod used in teaching vocabulary, and the difficulties and problemsfound in teaching vocabulary.
3.4.3 Documentation
Documentation will be used to find out the supporting data in written
forms. As Arikunto (2006:158) says that documentation is writtendocuments such as books, magazines, documents, rules, etc. Therefore, inthis research, the data of the documentation is the names of therespondents of the seventh grade of SMP Negeri 2 Ambulu.

3.5 Data Analysis Method
The result of post-test will be used as primary data, which will
be analyzed by using t-test formula of 5% significant level in the
SPSS computing system to know whether or not the meandifference of using Eurotalk Flashcard software on the students
vocabulary achievement is significant. The independent sample t-
test by SPSS will be used to analyze the data obtained. An
independent sample t-test is used to compare the means of a
normally distributed interval dependent variable for twoindependent groups.
