UAI Orientation workshopsThe Orientation Workshops are the beginning and welcome of the International Mobility for incoming students, which is a great educational experience, both academically and personally speaking. We have prepared these first days in order to provide students with tools that allow an adequate insertion in our country and University during the next months.

It will be 2 days in which we will share cultural, academic, administrative and logistical aspects in such a way that all doubts can be clarified, and all questions can be asked, making sure all students know about the different services and programs that are offered, being able to share not only with other international students but also with students from Universidad Adolfo Ibáñez, who will become hosts.

Chile,a diverse country

CHILE is one of the most interesting countries of Latin America in terms of professional activities and tourism. A solid economy and spectacular landscapes make the country an exceptional place for living and traveling.

Placed in South America, our country occupies a long, narrow strip of land between the Andes Mountains to the East and the Pacific Ocean to the West. The population reaches the 16.5 million people.

Chile celebrates its Independence Day every September 18th, commemorating the Primera Junta Nacional de Gobierno of 1810. The official language is the Spanish and the traditional dance is the “cueca”.

Our main industry is mining, but we are also worldwide known for our high quality wines and agricultural production.

25

Page 26:  · Use your @alumnos.uai.cl to log in into computers at the university. Grading system in Chile Scale 1,0 to 7,0 (1,0 to 3,9 is failed/ 4,0 is passing and 7,0 is maximum. Transcripts

Chileans are very friendly, yet also reserved. In comparison to other Latin American countries, Chile has a more European way of life, we are kind of shut-in persons. This might be explained by our Spanish, English and German foundational immigration. You will see a lot of European influence in our architecture and culture. But we are still Latin Americans and we usually hug and kiss on the cheek to say hello and goodbye.

Our indigenous cultural background is the Mapuche people. They have a very strong character and they are incredibly persistent people and great warriors. Their typical sport is the “palín” or “chueca”, and their language is “Mapudungun” (which means “the language of the Earth”). Many cities and towns of Chile have names in this language, with several interesting meanings. For example, Pucón means “the entrance to the mountains”.

Chile has an extension of more than 4000 kilometers and has 15 regions. Take advantage of the opportunity to visit the beautiful landscapes that Chile offers: the very arid desert in the North or the rainy forests of the South. Also visit other South American destinations, such as Lima or Machu Picchu (Perú), Mendoza or Buenos Aires (Argentina) and Rio de Janeiro (Brazil).

San Pedro de Atacama, Valle del Elqui, Valle de Casablanca (Ruta del Vino), Isla Negra (Neruda’s house), Pomaire, Cajón del Maipo, Cordillera de los Andes, Isla de Pascua, Pucón, Puerto Varas, Frutillar, Chiloé, Torres del Paine, Antártica.

SANTIAGO  is located in the center of Chile, 30 minutes (by bus) away from the Chilean main airport “Arturo Merino Benitez”. It’s the home to almost one-third of the country’s population, with more than six million people.

The capital city is very modern and it is located at the foot of the Andes Mountains, 100 kms from the Pacific Ocean coast, where Viña del Mar is located. It is the main business and political region of the country. At some point, Santiago can be a fully crowded and a polluted place for you; the best option to move around the city is always taking the subway.

Here you will be able to ski in the Andes Mountains during the winter and also go to beautiful parks in summer, such as Cajón del Maipo. Even more, you might practice different sports, have fun in several pubs at night and visit interesting urban parks and museums, such as: the Presidential Palace, Plaza de Armas, Mercado Central, Museo de Bellas Artes, Museo Histórico, Biblioteca Nacional, Cerro San Cristóbal, Barrio Bellavista, Casa La Chascona (Neruda’s house), Los Dominicos and Parque Bicentenario.

VIÑA DEL MAR  is located on the coast of the Pacific Ocean offering nice beaches, delicious seafood and a wide range of hotels and modern facilities.

The city is very safe and homely, a great place for living, having 300.000 inhabitants and holding several universities and educational institutions, which is one of the reasons why it has become a student district along with Valparaíso.

The “Garden City” has interesting touristic points, such as: the Presidential House (Cerro Castillo), the Quinta Vergara, the Botanic Garden, the Casino and the famous Flower Clock. Also, Viña del Mar is next to Reñaca and Concón, where you can do fun activities such as surf, sandboard, horseback riding, and scuba diving among others. Every year on February, the city appears on the map when the most traditional music festival in Latin America takes place.

VALPARAÍSO is the most famous port of our country, located next to Viña del Mar, and connected by a highway and a railway. It is the cultural capital of Chile, where you might participate in one of the most spectacular New Year’s Eve celebration, watching great fireworks all over the seacoast.

With its captivating colorful houses and the funiculars connecting the hills with the coast, Valparaíso is considered a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

Having 300.000 inhabitants, the city hosts the National Congress and the Navy of Chile. Even Valparaíso is no longer the main commercial port of Chile, still has a lot of business life holding private ship companies, several lawyer offices and banks, all occupying beautiful buildings with XIX century European style.

La “Joya del Pacífico” is famous for receiving and enchanting artists from all over the world. Painters, sculptures, musicians and poets provide a unique artistic life, mixed with a bohemian atmosphere, turning the city into an unforgettable place.

Taking a thirty minute boat ride by the sea, at Plaza Sotomayor, will be an interesting experience. You might then walk up to Cerro Alegre and visit the Palacio Baburizza (Museo de Bellas Artes), with an spectacular view from the Paseo Yugoslavo. There you can have lunch at exquisite restaurants, before visiting La Sebastiana (Neruda’s house) in Cerro Florida. The Museo Naval might be another interesting visit, taking the funicular Artillería to get to the Mirador 21 de Mayo. After that you can visit the Chilean battleships at the Molo, and then return home taking a traditional Trolley.

Trying to fit into a new culture

When a person studies abroad for the first time , it is very common to experience a “cultural shock”: feeling several emotions before understanding a new culture. It is possible to identify four consecutive emotional stages: 1. Honey moon: everything is new and fun; we

have no worries at all. 2. Shock: we feel disappointment and stress

when we realize about the differences with our culture of origin.

3. Negotiation: we learn how to handle problems.

4. Acceptance: we understand the new culture and appreciate to be part of it for a while.

Practice sports and do volunteer work; be optimist; have a lot of patience; improve your Spanish language.

TIPS TO HANDLE THE CULTURAL SHOCK

WeatherThe weather in Chile has great variety: the north is hot and dry (desert), the center has a Mediterranean climate and the south is cold and rainy (forest).

SANTIAGO

The climate of Santiago is due to its location. It corresponds to a temperate climate with winter rains and prolonged dry season, better known as the Mediterranean climate. Temperatures vary throughout the year. In summer Santiago is hot, with temperatures that easily reach 32 °C during the afternoons. On the other hand, in the months of autumn and winter, the maximum temperature often falls below 10 °C and even at 7 °C and the minimum temperature is somewhat lower than 3 °C on average and even frequently decreases to 0 °C, especially during the early morning hours.

The climate of Viña del Mar is Mediterranean with oceanic influence, of great cloudiness with warm summers and rainy winters. It has normal temperature (Csb in the climatic classification of Köppen), influenced by the cold current of Humboldt, which moderates the temperatures in summer and always maintains a pleasant temperature in winter, very similar to Valparaíso. The average annual temperature is 15 °C. In January the minimum oscillates between 14 °C and 17 °C, while the maximum between 22 ºC and 25 °C. It rarely exceeds 30 °C. In July the minimum varies between 3 ° C and 8 °C, while the maximum, between 11 °C and 16 °C; they rarely fall below 0 °C, although minimum temperatures near -5 °C have been recorded. The precipitations fall especially in autumn and winter, the rainiest month is July.

The Chilean currency is called “peso” and is abbreviated as CLP. You can change money easily in the country in the different available exchange houses or use the credit card without problems, since its use is widely spread in the Chilean market.

1 dollar = 674 CLP* 1 euro = 793 CLP*

*Estimated data January 2019 http://www.bcentral.cl/billetes-monedas/

Chilean CurrencyATMs are very easy to find in Chile. Usually international banks charge fees for each withdrawal. Confirm the fee amount and general conditions of getting cash from ATMs in Chile with your bank. Credit cards are accepted in most hotels, stores and restaurants.

Cash and Credit CardsUniversidad Adolfo Ibáñez does not provide accommodation, but it has a network of contacts that look for a good place for students to rent, alone or in groups, or living with a Chilean family. In either modalities, neighborhoods near downtown are chosen, with good location and proximity to useful services such as shops, clinics, and most importantly, to the route of the approach buses to and from the university campus.

Public TransportationSANTIAGOTransantiago is a Public Transportation system which has a unified payment system through the BIP card! With “micros” (buses) and “metro” (subway). Most people use the "micro" to make short trips within the city. Metro I’s the fastest way to move in the city. It’s considered one of the most efficient and modern transport systems in Latin America. http://www.metro.cl/ https://www.transantiago.cl/

TransValparaíso is a Public Transportation system which allows the areas of Valparaíso, Viña del Mar, Concón, Quilpué, and Villa Alemana to have an organized and rapid transportation system with the “micros”. The bus fare will depend on the distance of the ride. The Metro de Valparaíso has a line that goes from Valparaíso to Limache, passing through Viña del Mar, Quilpué, and Villa Alemana. http://www.tmv.cl/ https://www.metro-valparaiso.cl/

VIÑA DEL MAR

There are "colectivos", black cars with a sign on the roof, which make a fixed route and also have an economic rate.

Taxis are not recommended because are expensive for foreign.

Other alternative is to use Uber and Cabify, companies that have become very popular with their users for delivering a good service.

To travel to more distant cities, you may use a bus or even local flights, which you should buy in advance (look for all the holidays that we have this year so you can plan ahead).

Natural Phenomena

1. In case you find yourself at UAI Campus

The UAI has a resistant earthquake construction so evacuation is not necessary while the phenomenon occurs. It is recommended that you look for places of seismic protection, that is, those that are protected or away from the falling or overturning of furniture and objects (lamps, dropping ceiling, air conditioning ducts, windows, among others). After the earthquake occurred you must follow the instructions given by the personnel in charge of the emergency who will be identified with a yellow reflecting vest. If an evacuation is indicated, you must go to the internal security zone using stairs and emergency exits that are properly marked (the use of elevators is forbidden). You must remain in that area until you receive explicit instructions from the personnel responsible for the operation.

2. In case you are not in UAI Campus

In the case of earthquake or tremors it is recommended that you look for places of seismic protection (away from the fall or overturning of furniture and objects) and if an evacuation is necessary, perform it in established zones until reaching a safe area.

In case you are in a coastal area and the emergency is a tsunami (an alarm will sound on your cell phone, as long as you have a Chilean chip) you must evacuate to a safe area (high areas: hills) In case you do not have enough time to evacuate to high areas and find yourself in an enclosure situation, it is recommended to evacuate vertically (top floor of a house or building). In these cases it is advisable to wait there while the situation is normalized and to be attentive to the indications given by the official means of communication.

Whatever the situation, you must communicate via WhatsApp / text message / send an email as soon as possible, to the International Student Advisor or to the International Relations Office, who will activate the emergency protocols.

Health1. If you find yourself at the UAI Campus and need medical attention because

you are sick or have had a minor accident, you can visit the Nursing Room staffed by a Nursing Technician, who will evaluate the situation and provide the necessary first aid. After this evaluation and if the situation warrants urgent immediate attention, you will be transferred to the nearest medical facility.

In case you have a serious accident or illness, you should contact / request to inform as soon as possible to International Student Advisor or any UAI staff who will activate the emergency protocols.

Skillful hours of the Nursing Room are: • Campus Peñalolén: Monday to Friday, between 8:30 and 17:45 (Building

A, second floor) WhatsApp number: +569 6254 9641. • Campus Viña del Mar: Monday to Friday, 8:30-14:00  |  15:00-18:00

(Building A, first floor)

2. If you are not in the UAI Campus and you need medical attention, due to a minor illness or accident, you must first of all, contact your Health Insurance and request instruction to where you should go and what steps to take. In the case you do not want to be send to a specific health care center, below we will indicate some medical centers and clinics where you can go.

In case you have an accident or serious illness, you must communicate / request to inform, as soon as possible, to International Student Advisor who will activate the emergency protocols.

Any cost that care and / or eventual hospitalization must be fully assumed by the affected party, this is the reason why it is imperative that you have a health insurance valid in Chile and that you carry the emergency telephone number of the insurance.

+Global UAI

49

Living an international educational experience is a unique and unrepeatable opportunity that will allow students to live not only an academic experience, but also a personal adventure that will transform their lives…

This is why, in order to adapt and integrate to local Chilean reality, to organizational culture at UAI and to sociocultural environment, it is very important to experience an adaptation and integration process to the local reality, to the organizational culture of the University itself, and to the sociocultural environment where the student will live the next months, either Santiago or Viña del Mar.

Aware that this process is vital for the experience in Chile, the International Relations Office of the Universidad Adolfo Ibáñez presents the +Global Program, which seeks to support integration process to our country and University Community during their stay, and also aims to give meaning to each of the initiatives that are organized for them, contributing to a real insertion.

Testimonies

I'm Rachelle and I studied during the Fall 2018 at UAI and the experience was great. It's a pleasure to be on campus. The teachers are very intelligent and they allowed us to learn t h e s u b j e c t s d o i n g p r a c t i c a l a c t i v i t i e s , r e s e a rc h a n d w h a t I learned here will stay with me forever. It was the best experience of my life. Really.

Before traveling to Chile I did not know much about Latin America. Getting along with the family that welcomes you and taking history classes was very g o o d , m y S p a n i s h improved a lot. For those who come next semesters, travel as much as you can and have a great time. It is an incredible experience.

For many foreigners Chile is that great unknown country at the end of the world. It was a delight to discover this beautiful place, full of landscapes that leave you breathless, from Atacama to Pata-gonia, passing through Serena, Valparaíso, Chiloé, and Pucón. Chile is a p o r t a l t o l i v e g r e a t experiences, to learn and to live, live a lot.

My semester at UAI was absolutely incredible. I could not have chosen a better university, the teachers and students are very friendly, every time you have a problem or you need something, you can approach them and this c o m b i n e d w i t h t h e academic, turned it into a wonderful experience. I would recommend it to everyone.
