Build a Time Line of Suleyman’s Reign The Ottoman Empire reached its height as a world power under the sultan Suleyman I. Read about Suleyman’s accomplishments below. Then answer the questions.

The Reign of SuleymanMilitary accomplishments Suleyman conquered the city of Belgrade in Europe and the island of Rhodes in the Aegean Sea in 1521. In 1526, he took over the kingdom of Hungary. Between 1534 and 1555 his army fought a series of wars against the Persians and conquered all of present-day Iraq. Meanwhile, in 1551, his army conquered North Africa as far west as Morocco.

Cultural achievements Suleyman encouraged advances in building and architecture. He was responsible for the building of fortresses, aqueducts, and bridges. In 1537, he ordered the reconstruction of Jerusalem’s walls. In 1548 and in 1557, he supported the construction of two major mosques in Istanbul.

During his reign, Suleyman improved the civil laws of the Ottoman Empire. He brought brilliant artists, statesmen, and thinkers to help rule the empire. He was a poet and he supported the famous lyric poet Baki. Baki composed an ode to Suleyman in 1555 that is still read today.

1520—Suleyman takes the throne of the Ottoman Empire.

1566—Suleyman dies.
