Summer is here and started with the very busy month of June which included three major national gymnastics competitions. The Visa U.S. Gymnastics Championships presented by Gillette Venus Divine took place in Nashville, Tenn., and showcased men's, women's, rhythmic, trampoline and tumbling competition. The competition was superior and the U.s. is well positioned for success in the upcoming Olympic Games in Athens this summer. Thank you to Visa and Gillette Venus Divine for their support of USA Gymnastics.

Reigning World Champion team members, Carly Patterson (2003 World Championships All-Around Silver Medalist) and Courtney Kupets (defending U.S. National Champion), tied for the National All-Around title at the 2004 Visa U.S. Gymnastics Championships presented by Gillette Venus Divine. On the men's side, 2003 All-Around World Champion Paul Hamm won his third consecutive National All-Around title. The top athletes earned spots on the U.s. National Team and advanced to the Olympic Trials in hopes of earning a ticket to Greece.

Rhythmic gymnast, Mary Sanders earned the title of National Champion for the third time in Nashville. Sanders made history at the 2003 World Championships where she finished in eighth place, the highest finish ever for a U.S. rhythmic gyrrmast. After Nashville, Sanders went on to win the 2004 U.S. Olympic Trials in San Jose, Calif. securing a spot on the 2004 United States Olympic Team.

Trampolinist, Jennifer Parilla was crowned National Champion in Nashville for the sixth time. Parilla was the first U.S. female to compete in trampoline in the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney and will make her second appearance at the Olympics this summer in Atllens. Parilla also finished in first place at the 2004 U.S. Olympic Trials in San Jose earning her spot on the 2004 United States Olympic Team.

The final competition during June was the 2004 U.S. Olympic Team Trials for artistic gyrrmastics. The competition took place in conjunction with Congress in Anaheim, Calif. The competition was amazing, showing the incredible depth of the U.s. teams.

Congratulations to Courtney Kupets, Courtney McCool, Paul Hamm and Brett McClure who all qualified to tile 2004 Olympic team due to their first and second place finishes at the Olympic Trials. Morgan Hamm and Jason Gatson were selected following the second day of competition to join their Olympic teammates in Athens. Both the men and women will hold an Olympic Selection Camp in July to determine tile remaining members of the team.

Following selection camp, the athletes are off to Athens to compete in the Olympic Games. As I mentioned, our teams are well positioned for success in Athens, so be prepared for an exciting time in the world of gymnastics. The USA Gymnastics Website will be the place for you to find out all of tile latest and up-to-date Olympic information. A section of the website will be devoted to the Olympic Games which will include daily feature stories, photos, live chats, interviews and much more. We will do everything possible to provide you with the best coverage available.

Post Olympic Games will bring the 2004 T.J. Maxx Tour of Gymnastics Champions to a city near you. The tour will travel to 38 cities across the country from September through November. Witness the stars of the men's and women's Olympic Gynmastics Teams. You'll marvel as these gymnasts deliver gymnastics in a creative and entertaining atmosphere with music, lights and drama. When Elite first tackled the Junior Olympic project in 1984, the company looked at it as a challenge to take this program to a new level. They envisioned a J.O. National Championship with a more polished look and wanted each regional team proudly sporting their individual set of colors at Championships. Their goal was to create a real team pride. The process of outfitting hundreds of athletes and coaches in distinctive uniforms that gave the Junior Olympics a unified look, was one that took a number of years to perfect and was truly a labor of love.

Today, every athlete at JO Nationals receives his/her regional apparel bagged, bearing his/her name and a note of congratulations from the employees of GK. After years of practice, the process is an exceptionally smooth running operation that is executed with pride each year as they ship out the final orders.

~~----------------------~--Over the years, the program has grown to include new disciplines and programs, and GK has been proud to include these new programs in their agreement. Today, as the official apparel supplier to USA Gymnastics' Jwuor Olympic and Grassroots Development programs, the "GK" brand outfits the very important developmental youth teams and programs in four disciplines of gymnastics. Programs such as Future Stars, TOPS and the Jump Start Development program all receive the benefit of Elite Sportswear's special touch.

Elite Sportswear furnishes approximately 7,700 pieces of apparel per year to these programs. This includes men's and women's competitive apparel and warm-ups for approximately 1,800 athletes and coaches each yeal~ and represents a contribution of over $250,000 worth of product for each year.

By sponsoring programs such as Junior Olympics and grassroots initiatives, Elite hopes to demonstrate its continued support and a desire to give something back to the sport that has helped them to grow and prosper.

USA Gymnastics salutes Elite Sportswear, and thanks them for all they do for our sport.

u.s. OLYMPIC TEAM TRIALS

GYMNASTICS JUNE 24-27, 2004 • ANAHEIM, CA

O lympic Trials for gynmastics took place in two cities on two consecutive weekends. The Trials for Rhythmic and Trampoline took place in San Jose, Calif., June 19

while the trials for men's and women's artistic took place in Anaheim, Calif., June 24-27.

MEN World Champion Paul Hamm showed why he is the World Champion, hitting his routines with precision and focus en route to the all-around win on both days of competition at the Olympic Trials. During preliminaries Hamm scored 57.600 but during finals he was near flawless, scoring 58.150. Hamm's highest scores of the Olympic Trials event were floor where he scored a 9.80 and a 9.90 on the two days of competition and on high bar where he scored 9.825 and 9.90.

Hamm said, "It was great today. Everything went really well, and I was able to fix the mistake I made the other day on pommel horse. It's great to be done."

2003 World Championships medalist Brett McClure was second in the rankings throughout the entire Olympic Trials competition. Both Hamm and McClure were selected for the 2004 Olympic Games Team, based on their one-two finish in the rankings of both the U.s. Championships and the Olympic Trials. There was a formula utilized for the men that Championships scores counted 20% each day and Olympic Trials scores counted 30% each day. All scores were put into the formula to determine rankings after the Olympic Trials. On the Olympic Team selection Hamm said, "I'm happy with the fact that we are going to put the best team out on the floor. If they based it just on the all-around totals, it wouldn't be the best team [for this format]. This allows us to use the best people on each event. No matter what, I see a strong team."

McClure's best event was ponunel horse where he scored 9.825 and 9.875. He said, "When I dismounted on rings, I felt SUd1 relief and excitement." When asked about earning a trip to the Olympics he said, "It was my ultimate goal. I didn't think this was possible but after the first day I saw it was definitely a possibility. It feels great."

In addition to Hamm and McClure, Jason Gatson and Morgan Hamm were also selected for the 2004 Olympic Games team. Gatson competed pommel horse, rings, parallel bars and high bar taking first on parallel bars after prelims and second after finals. He was also second in the rankings for rings on both days of competition. Hamm was first in the rankings on floor for both days of competition and was second and third on floor and high bar after finals.

Page 19: USA Gymnastics - July/August 2004

Along with the Hamm brothers, McClure and Gatson, other gymnasts were invited to the July Olympic Team Selection/Preparation Camp. They include (in alphabetical order) Raj Bhavsru~ David Durru1te, Stephen McCain, Todd Thornton, Sean Townsend, Blaine Wilson and Guru'd Young.

U.S. National Champion Courtney Kupets once again was victorious at the U.s. Olympic Team Trials, winning the all-around with a score of 75.750. Kupets said, "I feel like I came here and did what I wanted to do. I couldn't imagine coming here and placing first. It is so exciting. When it comes down to it, we're all cheering for everybody. We're like a big family, and together, we are a really great team."

On the heels of Kupets was another Courtney, Courh1ey McCool, who scored a 75.625 to finish second all-around. " I was on the eClge of my seat the whole time, ru1d it was a great experience. It was just so exciting to be here. When I'm out there, I try to focus on my job. I'm so ecstatic right now that I can't even think."

Based on their one-two finish, both Kupets and McCool were selected for the 2004 Olympic Team.

Kupets' highest scores of the event were bars where she scored a 9.675 during prelims and a 9.625 during finals . She was also very strong on beam scoring 9.60 and 9.525, respectively. McCool, who won the Olympic Test Event earlier this year, was consistent throughout with scores rru1ging from 9.325 on floor to 9.625 on beam.

2003 World Championships silver medalist and National Co-Champion Carly Patterson finished fourth after the first day of competition but had the highest all-around score during the second day of competition. Her scores for both days placed her third in the overall rankings.

Patterson said, "I'm just looking forward to camp and getting ready for that. I'm a little bit disappointed. I made a couple of mistakes today, but mostly on hard skills. I jumped crooked, and there was nothing I could do about it. I just need to go back to the gym and work hard."

Page 20: USA Gymnastics - July/August 2004

Tabitha Yim had a great showing at the Olympic Trials as well, finishing fourth in the all-around rankings with beam and floor being her best two events. On beam, Yim scored 9.475 and 9.525 while on floor she scored 9.425 on both days of competition. Just .55 separated first through fourth place in the all-around standings, showing the tremendous depth of the women's program. Unfortunately the day after the Olympic Trials, Yim ruptured her Achilles tendon ending her chance of competing at the 2004 Olympic Games.

Yim's teammate Allyse 1shino finished fifth in the overall rankings showing consistency on each event. 1shino said, ''I'm really happy with my performance. This was an amazing event, and I'm excited that I made it to training camp."

Mohini Bhardwaj, at age 25 and a hometown resident, was the crowd favorite at the Olympic Trials, finishing sixth allaround. Bhardwaj attended UCLA and resides in Los Angeles. She gained much attention at the competition with her comeback story and earned applause from the appreciative crowd. Bhardwaj commented on her years of competition experience, saying, "I think it's definitely a factor. I've probably had, including my years competing in college, four or six times as many competition as the others have had."

Rounding out the top 11 in the all-around rankings were Terin Humphrey, Tasha Schwikert, Carly Janiga, Liz Tricase and Annia Hatch.

In addition to Kupets and McCool, several gymnasts earned a spot to the Olympic Training Squad based on their performance at the OlympiC Trials. The gymnasts in alphabetical order include Mohini Bhardwaj, Annia Hatch, Terin Humphrey, Allyse 1shino, Carly Janiga, Carly Patterson, Tasha Schwikert, Liz Tricase, Hollie Vise, and Tabitha Yim. In addition, Chellsie Memmel, Nicole Harris and Marcia Newby (pending medical clearance), will be added to the Olympic Training Squad at the Final Selection Camp. The Olympic Team selection will be made by the Selection Committee on July 18 at the Final Selection Camp.

From looking at the USA rosters thus far, the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens will be a very exciting competition for our sport!

RHYTHMIC Rhythmic sensation Mary Sanders and trampolinist Jennifer Parilla earned a trip to Athens by winning the 2004 U.S. Olympic Team Trials for Rhythmic Gymnastics and Trampoline at the San Jose State University Events Center.

Sanders, the three-time consecutive rhythmic national champion, scored 26 points or better on all four events, a first for her, marking the successful completion of a new and more difficult ribbon routine. Her total all-around was 105.175 and she said, "It's good to be consistent like that. I'm usually a little up and down, especially my ribbon -that's usually about two points lower. I was really thankful this time to hit each of my four routines, and to have the judges recognize that they're better routines and more difficult than I've done before."

Sanders was followed by Olga Karmansky and Lisa Wang in the all-around with scores of 95.525 and 88.500, respectively.

TRAMPOLINE Jennifer Parilla, the first woman to compete for the U.S. in 2000 at the Olympic Games in trampoline, became a twotime Olympian when she won the u.s. Olympic Team Trials-Trampoline. She finished ninth in Sydney, but says, "I think I'm going to Athens with a different level of focus than Sydney. Sydney, I was just excited to go. It was the first Olympics as a sport for trampoline. The man who invented trampoline was there, and the first World Champion was there. In my second Olympics, I'm more looking forward to the competition and going home with a medal." Jennifer scored a 101.70 at the Trials and also won the u.s. Championships, Winter Classic and Elite Challenge this year, all of which figured in the selection of the Olympian.

Also competing at the Olympic Trials was Jaime Strandmark who finished second with a score of 99.60 and was named as the alternate for the Olympic Games. Amanda Bailey took third with a score of 95.70, Kim Poling, fourth, 93.60 and Nicole Roethle, fifth, 71.80.

Reigning World Champion Paul Hamm performed true to form in winning his third consecutive Sr. Men's All-Around title at the 2004 Visa U.s. Gymnastics Championships at the Gaylord Entertainment

Center in Nashville, June 2-5.

Hamm from Team Chevron-Ohio State scored a 115.700 to walk away with the victory, boosted by a 9.825 score on high bar where he performed three release skills in a row and stuck his dismount. Hamm finished 1.7 points ahead of Brett McClure of Team Chevron-OTC, with brother Morgan Hamm also of Team Chevron-Ohio State taking third.

McClure, a 2001 and 2003 World Championship team member, finished second in 2001 but was fifth last year at the U.S. Championships. He counted an event-best 9.800 pommel horse score en route to a 114.000 allaround total. Known as a solid all-around athlete, four of his six scores were above 9.500, allowing him to remain second throughout the entire competition.

just take it one day at a time and one event at a time. It's a great start now but I need a great finish, too."

Morgan Hamm's final tumbling pass - a stellar layout - secured a 9.750 on his strongest event, floor exercise, to finish third with a 113.125. He said, "I'm very happy with my performances. I hit six for six and I'm right where I want to be. Of course second place would be good but third is also good."

Perhaps the strongest comeback of the night, Todd Thornton of Team Chevron-HGA, had two scores above a 9.700 including a 9.775 on floor and a 9.750 on high bar to move up from seventh after prelims to fourth in the combined standings. Thornton, who was the 2000 junior all-around champion, was the alternate to the 2001 World Championship team.

Sean Townsend of Team Chevron-HGA finished fifth allaround and said, "I had a better day today than during prelims, moving from eighth to fifth."

On the other hand, Raj Bhavsar had a better day during prelims than finals, moving from fourth to sixth.

Page 26: USA Gymnastics - July/August 2004

Showing the overall strength of the U.S., five of the six events were won by a different gymnast, with Hamm as the only gymnast to win two titles. Event champions included: Paul Hamm, floor (19.650); McClure pommel horse (19.550); Raj Bhavsar, still rings (19.500); David Sender, vault (19.250); Alexander Artemev, parallel bars (19.350); Paul Hamm, high bar, (19.625).

Ron Galimore Men's Program Director said, "This is a strong group. Three juniors from last year made the Senior team-David Sender, Jonathon Horton and Taqiy Abdullah who is still a junior gymnast by age. Combined with our veterans I believe we have a very strong group of athletes.

Rounding out the senior national team in seventh through 14th positions were veteran of the men's team at age 30 Stephen McCain, Artemev, David Durante, Horton, Dan Gill, Abdullah, Clay Strother and Sender.

JUNIOR MEN

A t the Visa U.S. Championships in the men's junior division, Kyson Bunthuwong of Golden Bear Gymnastics finished on top of the Jr. Elite I division. Bunthuwong competed among

the seniors in hopes of earning a spot on the senior team. Although his score was not high enough for a spot on the senior team, he was the top scoring junior winning the Jr. Elite I title.

Derek Helsby from HGA finished second scoring a 51.225 in the allaround. Orlando's Seung Tai Lee took third with a 50.775 while Wesley Aderhold of WOGA was fourth with a 50.650. Rounding out the seven member national team were Tim McNeill of Capital, Jason Laughton of SCATS, and Chris Harper of WOGA

During event finals each of the six events went to six different gymnasts. McNeill took top honors on floor scoring 8.950. WOGA's Chris Harper was first on pommel horse with an 8.80. Rings event was awarded to Orlando Metro's Seung Tai Lee with a score of 9.350. Aderhold grabbed first on vault with a 9.20 while Tatarus' Jake Bateman was first on parallel bars and Alamo's Chris Silcox was first on high bar with an 8.525.

Brian Del Castillo and Cole Storer were neck and neck in the Men's Jr. Elite II competition. Del Castillo, who won JO Nationals Class II just three weeks ago, finished on top of the podium at the Visa U.S. Gymnastics Championships in the Jr. Elite II division.

Brian said, "It went well at the beginning but I fell on my last event, parallel bars. I thought he (Cole Storer) might catch me."

Storer finished second all-around for the second consecutive year, missing the top score by just .025. "I fell on my first event, floor, but picked it up from there. 1 started watching scores at the end. 1 knew it was close between Brian and I. I'm happy with the results."

Mel Anto Santander of Mass Gynmastics finished third. WOGA's Tim Gentry and Buffalo Groves' Thomas Kelley, both first year Class II's, finished fourth and fifth all-around. Colorado Training Center's Kyle Shanahan and Cypress' Andre Berry rounded out the top seven.

Del Castillo earned titles in floor (8.850), rings (8.525) and parallel bars (8.925) while Storer took top honors on vault (9.150) and high bar (8.775). Santander finished first on pommel horse (8.950).

Team USA showed its power once more as two National Champions were crowned - defending National Champion Courtney Kupets and 2003 World Championships All-Around Silver Medalist Carly

Patterson. What a fitting way to end the Visa U.S. Gymnastics Championships presented by Gillette Venus Divine in Nashville, Tenn., with good friends tying for first place.

On the final day of competition, Kupets needed a 9.600 on bars, her final event, to tie Patterson for the all-around title. She received exactly that, and the pair became just the third set of co-Champions in USA Gymnastics history. The last all-around tie recorded at the U.S. Championships occurred between Vanessa Atler and Kristy Powell in 1997.

Kupets, 17, and Patterson, 16, were neck and neck throughout the entire competition, putting up solid scores on each event. Kupets' best score, 9.800, came on beam in the first rotation, while Patterson later matched that mark on floor.

Back Row L to R: Carly Patterson, Courtney Kupets, Terin Humphrey, Courtney McCool , Allyse Ishino, Liz Tricase, and Tabitha Vim. Front row L to R: Tia Orlando, Tasha Schwikert, Nicole Harris, Carly Janiga, Mohini Bhardwaj, Ashley Postell and

Page 31: USA Gymnastics - July/August 2004

"It's very competitive but we all get to know each other," Patterson said. "We all want each other to do our best. We are both really great gymnasts. We are best friends, like sisters. After vault I thought I lost it, but I am glad we tied."

Kupets earned identical marks of 38.225 in both all-around prelims and finals, while Patterson improved from prelims to finals, turning in marks of 38.150 on day one and 38.300 in finals. For Kupets, the victory is even sweeter. The 2002 World Champion on uneven bars, Kupets was forced to withdraw from the 2003 Worlds with a torn Achilles tendon on Aug. 18. Meanwhile, Patterson went on to finish second in the all-around at Worlds and earned a gold medal with the team.

Kupets said, "Championships went really well for me. It was my first real meet back on my ankle, and it felt fine. Now I'm in the gym preparing all my routines and getting ready for Trials."

During event finals, Kupets won beam with a score of 9.725 and was second on bars with a 9.600 while Patterson won floor with a 9.70 and was second on beam with a 9.70.

World Championships teammate Terin Humphrey, 17, finished third all-around, the highest all-around finish of her career. "My goal was top three. I was really nervous to know the scores, and I was just trying to focus on hitting my routines," said Humphrey. Right behind her was 16-year-old teammate Courtney McCool, who jumped from eighth to fourth with an outstanding effort. McCool finished second on floor during event finals with a 9.575 and tied for third on beam. "We have extreme gymnasts out here and it is just whoever has a better day."

Charter Oak Gliders' Allyse Ishino, 16, was consistent throughout the competition finishing fifth after prelims and sixth after finals . ''I'm happy with my performance tonight," said Isl"lino. "I hit my routines the way I wanted to. I am trying to keep myself confident."

Comeback kid Liz Tricase, 17, from IGI showed she's back in top form after a knee injury last year by tying for second on vault with a 9.525 on her double twisting Yurchenko and finished sixth in the overall rankings.

Page 32: USA Gymnastics - July/August 2004

Charter Oak Gliders' Tabitha Yim, 18, finished seventh overall, showing consistent routines throughout the competition. Parkettes' Tia Orlando, 16, had a tough day during prelims on bars finishing 13th overall, but came back strong during finals finishing eighth in the overall rankings. She also scored an impressive 9.650 on floor for her powerful routine during the final day of competition.

GymCats' Tasha Schwikert, 19, who has been hampered with an Achilles injury and debated whether or not to compete in the event, pulled it all together winning the title on bars with a score of 9.650 and finishing ninth in the overall standings. Schwikert placed third after preliminary competition but had some problems on bars during finals. After preliminaries, Schwikert said, "I shocked myself tonight. I just started vaulting and tumbling three weeks ago. This is the most intense Championships I have ever competed in.
