I'm excited to report that Olympic Champion Mary Lou Retton will join Bela Karolyi as co-chairs of 200 1 National Gymnastics Day. I can't think of two better representatives for this special celebration of our sport. Many new developments are taking place this year. As you may already know, we have partnered with the Children's Miracle Network for our first nationwide Cartwheel-A-Thon. Log on to our website www.usa-gymnastics.org to find out how to get involved. Also, several celebrities have provided USA Gymnastics with a quote to illustrate the great foundation that gymnastics offers, as each has been uniquely touched by our sport as a competitor, fan or parent. These celebrities include Adrienne Barbeau, Bonnie Bernstein, Mary Hart, Tom Kite, Shannon Miller, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Peter Vidmar and James Worthy, and I'd

Robert V. Colarossi like to commend them for their support. Lastly, thanks to President of. the governors who have already proclaimed August 25 as

USA Gymnastics National Gymnastics Day and to the youth organizations who have come on board as supporters. This year is shaping up to be our most successful National Gymnastics Day yet.

USA Gymnastics recently announced that the dates of the 2003 World Championships have changed from November to an August timeframe. As a result of the date change and scheduling conflicts, USA Gymnastics made the very difficult decision to relocate the event from Indianapolis to the Arrowhead Pond in Anaheim, California. I'd like to Sincerely thank the Indiana Sports Corporation for all of their efforts and we look forward to hosting the 2006 and 2007 U.s. Championships in Indianapolis. I am confident that the L.A. Sports Council, the staff of Arrowhead Pond and our strong Southern California gymnastics community will work diligently with USA Gymnastics to stage a fantastic world championships. Stay tuned for volunteer opporhmities in upcoming issues and on the website.

I am pleased to inform you that USA Gymnastics has renewed partnerships with Visa USA, Hershey Foods, Texaco and Elite Sportswear loP. through 2004. USA Gymnastics has existing partnerships with A-1 Awards, American Athletic (AAI), adidas America, Bemco, General Motors, Jet Set Sports and NBC Sports. The support they provide is vital to the success and growth of this organization and our athletes. Associating our name with such elite level corporations helps USA Gymnastics generate exposure, increase membership and conduct our events at the highest level, so I'd like to extend gratitude to our sponsors on behalf of USA Gymnastics.

The 2001 Trampoline and Tumbling National Championships took place in San Antonio in June. I was very impressed with the level of competition. Congratulations to all of our new national champions. It looks as if we'll have very strong teams representing USA Gymnastics at the World Championships and World Age Group Games in Odense, Denmark, in July. Best of luck to our athletes!

Congratulations to all of the athletes who competed in the Junior Olympic National Championships. These fine athletes should be commended for their hard work. Read more about the Men's, Women's, and Rhytlunic competitions throughout this issue of USA Gymnastics and look for Trampoline and Tumbling coverage in the next issue.

I'd also like to congratulate the NCAA women's national champions. It's encouraging for our programs to see so many former national team members go on to compete at the collegiate level. Routines were very polished and the teamwork displayed was very impressive.

The U.S. Championships in Philadelphia will be here before we know it. Thanks again to Fred Turoff, Philadephia Convention & Visitors Bureau and the Philadelphia Sports Congress for all of the hard work they've put into making the event a success. This year's competition will be very exciting as we will name the teams who will represent the USA at the artistic and rhytlunic world championships. Make your plans now to attend by calling National Travel Systems at 888-603-8747. Hope to see you there, or else catch the action on NBC Sports on August 11-12 and September 2.

Best of luck to you this busy summer!

Introducing the Newest Grip on the

Bars! Designed

and manufactured with assistance from

. (j) National Team Coaches, the Just Right by Gibson is the newest idea in Ladies

Uneven Bar Grips. The Just Right is cut slightly narrower for great contact with the bar and reduces side to side rolling of the grip for athletes with smaller hands The single buckle design assures a firm, tight fit at the wrist, and eliminates the constant adjustment necessary with velcro strap grips.

NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS continued from page IS

Doni Thompson started the Bruins off in terrific fashion with a solid routine for 9.90, but the Bruins' second competitar fell on her gym/acro series, and the intensity in the arena went up about ten notches. Georgia fans were at the edge of their seots and exploded with approval as eoch Gym Dog nailed her vault. Fourth-up Suzanne Sears landed a Rawless pike front with a half, receiving a 10.0 from two of the four judges for a 9.975. Kristi Lichey, hampered by a sprained ankle in the prelims, closed out the Georgia set with a 9.95 for her pike front with-a-half to secure a leam score of 49.5.

Because the Georgia vault line-up had had such a remarkable outing, just finishing the beam without counting the fall would not be enough for UCLA. The Bruins needed big scores. First up after the fall was Yvonne Tousek, who garnered a 9.95 (bock handspring, layout, layout; wolf jump to a back handspring straddle down; round-off double full dismount). Onnie Willis followed for a 9.90 (wolf jump to a back straddle down; pike jump and back ~ turn to handstand; back handspring, back handspring, double back dismount). Then, Kristen Maloney posted a 9.925 (back handspring, back layout; wolf jump to a heort-stopping full-twisting back straddle down; wolf full; back handspring, back handspring, double full dismount).

By now, Georgia had finished vaulting, and in spite of the fad that Michigan was still performing on the Roor, the hush that fell over the arena as Mohini Bhardwaj mounted the beam made it cleor that the savvy crowd knew the NCAA national championship leam title had come down to this one routine.

Bhardwaj pressed to handstand, performed a switch jump, wolf jump combination, executed a solid back handspring, layout, layout series, added a running punch front, then performed a back dive with ~ turn to handstand, and finally dismounted with a round-off full for a 9.90 and-the national title.

Michigan's Elise Ray and UCLA's Onnie Willis tied for the NCAA individual all-around title. Georgia freshman Cory Fritzinger won the vault title during the individual event finals. UCLA's Yvonne Tousek became the bars champion. Utah's Theresa Kulikowski repeated as beam champion after missing last year due to injury. And Mohini Bhardwaj of UCLA closed out her collegiate career with an NCAA floor title.

Elise Ray, competing for Michigan, said, "It has been wonderful. This whole yeor has been so much fun. I can't believe it is alreody over. It feels like I just got here ... The energy (in the meets) is so high all the time. It has been so exciting and so much fun.

"College gymnastics is all about the leam, and not yourself, so the priorities are different," said UCLA's Kristen Maloney. "Nationals was a lot of fun, but it was the most nervous I have ever been. I tried to calm myself down. But when we ended on beam with the national championship on the line, I was ten times more nervous than I have ever been."

In the 20 years that Elite Sportswear has manufactured "GK" apparel, the company has been a steady and dependable supporter of the sport at all levels. From the U.S. National Team sponsorship which it held from 1989 through 1992, right up to today, "GK" has always been there, ready to pull out all the stops to do whatever was needed to meet the demands of a very unique market, the sport of gymnastics. They have sponsored athletes for events such as The World Age Group Games for Trampoline and Tumbling, Gymnaestrada, and the Maccabi Games.

Even before the National Team contract in 1989, Elite was proving themselves to be capable of bringing bigger and better things to gymnastics. When Elite first tackled the Junior Olympic project in 1984, they took it to a level not previously envisioned. Thanks to Elite, the rO. Nationals now have a polished look, with each regional team proudly sporting its individual set of colors at Championships. Elite carefully perfected the process of outfitting the hW1dreds of athletes and coaches that participated in the Junior Olympics in distinctive willorms that gave the Junior Olympics a wUfied look. Each athlete at J.O. Nationals receives his/her apparel boxed specially for them, bearing their name and a note of congratulations from the employees of GK. Over the years, the program has grown to include new disciplines and programs. Today, as official apparel supplier to USA Gymnastics' Junior Olympic and Grassroots Development programs, their brand, "GK," outfits the very important developmental youth teams and programs for all four disciplines of gymnastics. Programs such as Future Stars, TOP's and the Jump Start

38 USA GYM N A 5 r , C 5 MAY / J U N E 2 0 0 1

Development program will all receive the benefit of Elite's special touch.

As the official supplier from 2001-2004, Elite Sportswear will furnish in the neighborhood of 7,700 pieces of apparel per year, to these programs. This includes men's and women's competitive apparel and warm-ups for approximately 1,800 athletes and coaches each year, and represents a contribution of over a million dollars worth of product over the course of those four years.

This commitment has not gone wmoticed by the gymnastics community. Recently, Elite Sportswear was awarded the Shirley Marshak Memorial Award for recognition of their contributions to the TOP's program. In her acceptance speech, the owner and CE.O of Elite Sportswear, Sallie Weaver, voiced a very "GK" view of the honor. "It seems odd to be given an award for doing something we enjoy doing so much."

Elite's commitment to detail, fit, and service also earned them another high honor in 1999, when they were chosen by adidas America, to manufacture the U.s. Olympic and National Team competitive apparel. The two companies cooperated in the project, each bringing their own special insights and talents to the tablethe result was both professional and skillful.

From future stars to todays top athletes, it is quite evident that Elite believes in supporting the sport it services. The success the company has experienced in the past 20 years is a direct result of the quality and caring that "GK" has come to be known for in the industry. In sponsoring programs such as Junior OlympiCS and TOP's, Elite demonstrates its continued support and a desire to give something back to the sport that has helped it to grow and prosper.

Sallie Weaver, owner and CEO of Elite Sportswear.

CLAY STROTHER continued from page 8

Clay is from Jasper, Texas, a small town with no gymnastics club in his area. Therefore, Clay traveled to louisiana's Gymnastics Etc. coached by Keith and Tammy Miller, a club about 90 minutes away from his home to train. "My parents drove me to the gym six days a week for about five years," said Clay. "Prior to this, I trained in Beaumont, Texas, which was also about 90 minutes away from home."

ALL the sacrifices seem to be paying off. In the Romanian International Tournament, held April 27-29 in Ploiesti, Romania, Clay came on strong winning four medals, including the aLL-around bronze. He also earned silver medals on floor, pommel horse and parallel bars.

"I was very surprised," said Clay. "My goal was to earn medals on floor and pommel horse but it was great to also win a medal on parallel bars and in the aLL-around."

When asked about his performance, Clay said, "The toughest part was my Yurchenko vault because I had to

TASHA SCHWIKERT continued from page 11

USA !iymnaJtiu: I know after the Olympic Games you had some injuries, what was wrong and how are things now?

7aJha: I injured my hamstring and had to do light practices for a couple of months. I was back in the gym doing full training around December of last year and things are going great now.

USA !iymnaJtiu: I heard that you won the all-around at the USA vs. Belgium dual competition that was held at Karolyi's Ranch . Tell us about the competition.

7aJha: It was good to get back to competition. I have new routines on all the events and I'm working on upgrading my routines even more. I'm training 5-6 hours a day six days a week.

USA !iymnaJtiu: What do you think of the new vault that will be used for the first time in a major competition at the world Championships this fall?

7ruha: I like it. I'm working on a more difficult vault with the new piece of equipment. My coach ordered one for our gym and I've been using the new vault at the ranch.

USA !iymnaJtiu: What are your plans for this year?

7aJha: I'll be at U.S. Classic and U.S. Championships and my goal is to make the World Championships team and do well in Belgium this fall .

USA !iymnaJtiu: I understand you have a sister who is also an elite gymnast. What is it like competing together?

7ruha: Jordan is 14 and recently went to testing and qualified elite so she'll be at the U.S. Classic, too. We competed in the 2000 American Classic and u.s. Classic together. She'll be a junior and I'll be senior. We kind of stay away from each other so we can stay focused.

USA !iymnaJtiu: Tell me about school, are you still doing home school?

7aJha: No, I'm not doing home school anymore. After the Olympic Games I started back at Centennial High School. Things are going well-I like school.

convert my run from feet to meters and my steps were off. 1 finally got my steps down and did okay in the competition."

Clay finished 30th all-around at the 2000 Winter Cup Challenge and climbed to second all-around in just one short year. When asked about his sudden success, Clay said, "I guess it's just a lot of hard work and getting my skill level up." He added, "It sort of felt like my hard work was finally paying off."

Clay is coached by Fred Roethlisberger and Thorn Glielmi and is training very hard for the U.S. Championships in August where he hopes to be in the top 14 and make one of the teams representing the U.S.-either Goodwill Games, World Championships or World University Games.

With Clay's determination and work ethic, we may just see him on one of those teams!

USA !iymnrutiu: What do you like to do outside of the gym?

7aJha: I like to hang out with friends and shop. I'm also looking forward to car shopping with my parents-I hope to have a new car soon.

USA !iymnaJtiu: What advice do you have for young gymnasts?

7ruha: Don't give up on any dreams or goals that you set. look at me .. .1 had absolutely no idea I was going to get to compete in the Olympics. I just kept training hard and then it all paid off. Go for it because you never know how it will turn out in the end."

USA !iymnaJtiu: Good luck with all your events this year.

7ruha: Thanks.
