Pre-installation Information Ensure that the VPN Client is not currently running.  If it is, close it out before

proceeding with installation of the new client.

 Uninstall any previous VPN Client and restart the computer before installing the

new VPN Client – instructions on how to do this are listed below.

 

Note: If you are running additional security software such as third party

firewalls and security suites, temporarily disable them before proceeding with

installation.

Removing the prior version of the VPN client

 

Note: If you are running additional security software such as third party firewalls

and security suites, temporarily disable them before proceeding with installation.

 

1. Click on the Windows Start button & select Control Panel from the menu. 2. Locate & open the Add/Remove Programs icon.  You will see one of the

following Control Panel screens.

 3. From the Add/Remove Programs window, locate the entry entitled “Cisco

Systems VPN Client” or “VPN Client” and click “Change/Remove” or “Remove” button.

 

  4. The Uninstall will begin.  You may see the following prompt.  If so, click on

the Yes button.

5. The Uninstall will continue:

8. When the Uninstall has completed, the InstallShield Wizard may requestthat you restart the computer.  If so, select the “Yes, I want to restart mycomputer now” button and click on the Finish button.

 Note: If you were not prompted to restart your computer, restart it now.

9. After the computer has restarted, open the My Computer icon from either your Desktop or from the Start button menu (Start -> (All) Programs ->Accessories -> Windows Explorer).

 10. Open the C: drive & then locate & open the Temp folder (if it exists – if not

skip this step and the next step). 11. Locate the VPN4K folder and delete it (if it exists – if not skip this step).

Installing the new VPN 5.x Client Note: If you have not already downloaded the new VPN 5.x Client, download it

from the following NIH web site. 

http://isdp.nih.gov/downloads/vpn_tools.asp   Note: When downloading the client from the above web site, you will be

prompted for your NIH login username & password and you must enter “NIH\” (without the quotes) in front of your username:

 

  1. Locate & open the “vpnclient-windows-5.0.01.0600-k9-XP.exe” icon from

where you chose to save the program (Most web browsers save files to theDesktop)

2. From the WinZip Self-Extractor dialog box, click on the Unzip button. 

  3. Once the files have been extracted, click on the OK button to dismiss the

information window and then click on the Close button to close the WinZipSelf-Extractor.

4. Browse to “C:\temp\VPN4K”: 

• Open “My Computer” by clicking Start -> (All) Programs -> Accessories -> Windows Explorer 

 •

Open the C: drive and then locate and open the Temp folder  • Locate the VPN4K directory 

    5. Double-click on the “vpnclient_setup.exe” icon

6. Click the ‘Next >’ button 

  7. Click on the ‘I accept the license agreement’ radio button & click on the Next

button.

 10. Installation will begin, it make take a few minutes to complete 

  

11. Click ‘Finish’ 

  

12. Once the installation is complete, restart your computer if you were notalready prompted to do so.
