Book Fair UpdateThank you to everyone who supported the Book Fair this year. It was a very successful event. Every purchase made went to supporting the library in purchasing more books. The book fair has enabled our school and students to gain an additional 73,300 independent reading minutes. This year we earned over $1600 in books. We can’t wait for students to get the opportunity to borrow the latest books.

Congratulations to the following students who earned a prize during the Book Fair and got to choose their own book to take home:

Thomas Porter, Hunter Pagett, Ayla Perceval, Alexis Pagett, Imogen Wells, Peyton Murray.

Lego DonationsThere have been lots of changes going on in the library lately and soon there will be another exciting new change. It will be very exciting for the students, but it is a surprise. We will need lots of LEGO for this new surprise. If anyone has any LEGO that they don’t need any more and are happy to donate it, that would be greatly appreciated.

Book Fair Update continued

Library Bags ReminderLots of students are forgetting to bring their library bags and then are unable to borrow. If students do not have a library bag it is fine for them to use a plastic bag instead.

As an alternative, we have WCS Library bags on sale for $4. They can be purchased at the office.

We have so many amazing new books in the library and we would love everyone to be able to take them home and enjoy them with their families.

National ATSI Children’s DayOn the 16th August our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students had the pleasure of participating in the National ATSI Children’s Day at Baker Park in Wyong. Our students joined Indigenous children from many other local schools to celebrate their culture and participate in a variety of fun activities. The smiles on the students’ faces were clear evidence of how much they enjoyed learning about and celebrating their culture.

Smart Start Banking TalksLast week all of our students participated in talks with representatives from the Commonwealth Bank. These Smart Start talks taught students the benefits of saving money and discussed the difference between ‘needs’ and ‘wants’. It was difficult for some students to accept that Lego and lollies were in fact ‘wants’. Here are some photos of K/1M enjoying their talk.

Remember: “Speed to your need and wait for your wants!”

School Swimming and Water Safety ProgramDuring Weeks 5 and 6, sixty sensational swimmers have been travelling to Toukley Aquatic Centre each day to participate in an intensive instructional swimming and water safety program that is run by the Department of Education. Students have participated in ten 45-minute lessons developing their water confidence, swimming strokes and water safety skills.

Here’s what some of our students have to say about Swim School:

At swim school we learn how to glide, freestyle, breaststroke, survival freestyle, survival breaststroke and survival back scull. We get to have fun with friends while learning to swim. My friends there are Tayah, Jaz, Emily, Zayden and Quade. Before swim school I did not know how to do freestyle. Now I do, and I also know I can jump in the deep end.

By Tileah

I love swim scheme! It is really fun (except for swallowing water that has chlorine in it)! Our swimming teacher told us to go underwater and get wet so we did. Then we had to put our face under the water while we were swimming. We also had a swimming race and got to have free time before we left swim school.

By Abbie

At swim school we learn new things each day. My teacher is Mrs Hobey and she is a very good teacher. I’m in the Purple 7 group with Emily and Safina and I like that a lot- that makes it fun! I love the pool so much because it’s warm, nice, fun and relaxing.

Year 5 STEM FunLast week while our Year 6 students visited the high school for their Science Transition Day, many of our Year 5 students participated in some STEM activities with Ms Eggleton, one of our great casual staff.

The students explored the idea of surface tension using milk and food dyes and were challenged to build the tallest spaghetti tower.

Science Day at Wadalba Community SchoolExcitement runs through the gates as other schools arrive. We all sat waiting patiently as the teachers put us into groups. The sweat in the air starts pumping, as no one can wait any longer. One group after another set off to start the day with something amazing. This was our Year 6 High School Science Transition Day.

Our first activity was Chemistry with Miss Bowen. We were using wooden skewers and some really cool powders that could make the flame from the Bunsen burner change to different colours.

The next activity was rockets, which was with Mr Huff. We learnt how objects can be pushed by something called force. We did this experiment with water in bottles acting like rockets, pumping them up with air and launching them high into the sky.

Our third activity was static electricity with Mr Harris. Everybody thought this activity was extremely exciting. A student from the group stood on a chair (preferably a girl with thin, long hair) and had to touch a static electricity generator. As the girl placed her hand on the generator, her hair rose slowly because of the electricity.

We also competed in an engineering challenge with Miss Burns. During this activity in groups of 6-7, we were set up to create a bridge that had to be one paddle pop stick high that could hold the most weight on it without collapsing. For their rewards, the winning group received a chocolate, and the running up team a lolly.

The fifth activity was with microscopes with Miss Fuller and a few of the high school helpers. Through the microscopes, we looked at things closer than we could see if we looked at it with the naked eye. It is amazing how sugar crystals look like diamonds under a microscope.

The sixth activity we did was how to test and control the water that we use in our fish tanks and pools with Mr Soreca. We mixed some chemicals to see what ph level of the water was.

Our final activity was dissecting animal organs with Ms Jones. We dissected a heart and a kidney from a sheep. Everyone was so keen to try this, even though of the gore. Everyone was surprised at how tough it was to cut through both the heart and kidney and even more so the smell of each. It was so disgusting!

Our wonderful high school teachers filled inquisitive minds, but frowns filled everyone’s faces, as it was the end of the day. We said our goodbyes to everyone and hope to see them again soon.

Tell Them From Me SurveyAs part of our school feedback and planning process, each year parents and carers are offered the opportunity to provide feedback about the school by completing the Tell Them From Me survey. The surveys help guide our school directions and planning. For example, feedback from previous years has led us to review and improve the information we provide to families about supporting learning for their children.

We encourage all parents to take 10-15 minutes to complete the survey. We have launched our 2019 family Tell Them From Me survey. The link to the survey is:

Screen Time Tips For Children

esafety.gov.au/parents

There is a lot of conflicting advice and emerging research around screen time. But, the right amount of screen time can depend on a range of factors like your child’s age and maturity, the kind of content they are consuming, their learning needs and your family routine. It can be easy to focus only on the clock and how long your child is spending in front of the screen, but the quality and nature of what they are doing online, and your involvement are just as important.

Consider your child’s screen use in the context of their overall health and wellbeing – for example, is online time getting in the way of their sleep and exercise? Is it impacting on their face-to-face connections with family and friends? The answers to these questions will guide you and help strike the right balance of online and offline activities for your child.

1. Be involved

Sharing screen time and online activities like gaming with your child helps you gauge the appropriateness of what they are doing and manage potential risks. It’s also a great way to start conversations with your child about their online experiences.

2. Work with your child to set boundaries for screen use

If you decide that setting screen time limits is right for you and your child, discuss these new rules with your child. Older children are more likely to cooperate if they have been part of the decision-making process. Colourful pictures or charts of daily limits and other important activities is a fun way to get younger children on board.

3. Be clear about the consequences of not switching off

Part of our role as parents is to set clear limitations and boundaries. The same applies to technology limitations so, being clear and consistent about the consequences for your child if they do not stick to these rules is paramount. The Raising Children Network provides some useful tools and advice.

Screen time for your child – 7 tips
