Institutional VisionThe University has become and will continue to be a living learning laboratory at the center of the Baltimore renaissance. Neither a traditional research nor comprehensive educational institution, the University will balance the seemingly contradictory: access and excellence, teaching and research, the one and the many. Through this creative tension, the University will develop cutting-edge solutions and new possibilities by relating theory to practice and understanding to experience. The University’s degree programs and continuing professional education will help students, faculty and staff understand the past, assess the present and shape the future. By blending the perspectives of law, liberal arts and business, the University community will create and transmit intelligent and practical solutions to challenging issues regionally, nationally and internationally.

The following narrative reflects accomplishments and program development toward each tenet of the University’s mission.

Letter from the PresidentDear Friends,

The energy and excitement on the University of Baltimore’s campus this past year has reached unprecedented levels. From new buildings to new initiatives, this has been a year of firsts:

• On Aug. 26, with faculty, staff, students and honored guests in attendance, UB broke ground for its new John and Frances Angelos Law Center. The 12-story building, anticipated to open in January 2013, will be one of the most environmentally responsible public buildings ever built in the United States, and it will serve as a major focal point for Baltimore’s cityscape.

• Meanwhile, the Fitzgerald at UB Midtown, built on UB property at the intersection of Mount Royal Avenue and Oliver Street, celebrated its grand opening this past fall. The development houses the Barnes & Noble at the University of Baltimore, the first Barnes & Noble College Booksellers Superstore in the University System of Maryland; 275 rental apartments; and a 1,245-space parking garage that has increased available UB parking by one-third.

• On the other side of campus, UB’s recently renovated Liberal Arts and Policy Building was recognized by the Midtown Development Corp. with a Midtown Development Award, which honors significant contributions to the revival of Baltimore’s Midtown. The rehabilitated historic building is an example of the University of Baltimore’s commitment to repurposing existing structures while preserving their design integrity and unique architectural qualities. The building is home to schools in UB’s two new units: the College of Public Affairs and the Yale Gordon College of Arts and Sciences.

• These two new colleges, founded July 1, now house all of the degree and certificate programs previously offered by the Yale Gordon College of Liberal Arts. The colleges are strategically poised to strengthen and expand the foundation of general-education and liberal arts courses to augment undergraduate student success; enhance UB’s distinction in the fields of public administration and justice; and build upon institutional

strengths in public service, applied research, interdisciplinary collaboration and the development of distinctive, robust and contemporary majors.

• For the second consecutive year, our fall enrollment represented the highest student headcount in University history. Besides contributing to a more vibrant and diverse campus, our growing student population has enabled us to expand our faculty. Over the past five years, we have added 32 faculty positions across UB’s schools and colleges.

• Our focus on the future of academics at UB complements

our concentration on the future of the environment. Many of you are reading this report digitally for the first time in UB’s history, an initiative driven by our dedication to sustainability—whether it be in the design and construction of new buildings or in our daily routines.

The foundation of all of these accomplishments lies in the generosity of those who provide financial support for our efforts. Your commitment allows us to serve our students and our community, and it inspires our longstanding commitment to excellence in education. Message from the Board ChairIt has been my distinct pleasure and honor to serve as chair of the Board of Directors this past year. This has been an exciting year of growth and progress with many of our accomplishments featured on the pages of this year’s annual report.

UB’s alumni and friends are integral to sustaining UB’s growth and vibrancy. I want to take a moment to thank each and every one of you for your commitment to the University of Baltimore this year.

Although giving was down at many institutions in 2010, we are thrilled to report that UB raised a total of $8,761,468 this year and we are more than 90 percent of the way to meeting our $40 million Capital Campaign goal. To have reached this level of support in such difficult times speaks both to the power of UB’s mission and aspiration and to the tremendous generosity of those of you who have provided support.

It is important to remember that your support directly impacts our students and for that we are truly grateful. Graduates of the University of Baltimore apply their education and training in countless ways. Some devote their talents to public service, some take up the causes of not-for-profit organizations and some are leaders in the private sector. Regardless of their chosen careers, each of them at different times and in different ways relies directly on the skills and insights they have acquired at UB.

As we look to the year ahead we must remember that the University of Baltimore’s greatest assets are its exceptional students and faculty, talented administration and deeply committed alumni and friends. UB Midtown Campaign Unveiled

Barnes & Noble College Booksellers Superstore and Parking Garage Open at The Fitzgerald at UB Midtown

The following information is from UBF’s last completed fiscal year (July 1, 2009-June 30, 2010)

The University of Baltimore is proud of its long history as an anchor for one of the city’s most celebrated and vibrant neighborhoods. Midtown is a growing, eclectic part of Baltimore, where many of the community’s best examples of art, culture, commerce and education come together. The UB Midtown banner and poster Campaign, initiated in fall 2009, emphasizes the University’s connection to its neighborhoods, celebrates UB’s strong programs in graphic design and visual communication, and contributes to public art at the intersection of the Mount Vernon Cultural District and the Station North Arts and Entertainment District.

Not your typical university public relations campaign, this colorful addition to the University of Baltimore campus and its environs features a series of illustrations by nationally renowned artists and designers: Milton Glaser, Nick Dewar, Scott Roberts, Jason Kernevich and Dustin Summers. Each illustration interprets and celebrates UB’s tagline, Knowledge That Works. The creative illustrations are visible throughout UB’s campus on banners along the street and on posters in the hallways of our academic buildings. To learn more, visit www.ubalt.edu/ubmidtown.

Construction was recently completed on the Fitzgerald at UB Midtown, a major public-private development project in conjunction with Baltimore’s Bozzuto Group; the development sits on UB-owned property at the intersection of Mount Royal Avenue and Oliver Street. The complex is anchored by the University System of Maryland’s first Barnes & Noble College Booksellers

Superstore and contains 275 market-rate apartments as well as a 1,245-space parking garage that increases available UB parking by one-third. The Barnes & Noble at the University of Baltimore features 20,000 square feet of retail space on two levels, a cafe serving Starbucks Coffee and designated areas for UB textbooks and apparel.

HEROES Academy Brings High School Students to Campus

Yale Gordon College of Liberal Arts Restructured

The University of Baltimore hosted its second annual fall Higher Education Readiness and Orientation for Excep-tional Students (HEROES) Academy for Baltimore-area high school students on Oct 1. Approximately 180 sophomores from Baltimore City College, Baltimore Polytechnic Institute, Catonsville High School, Eastern Technical High School and Towson High School experienced a day in the life of a college student on UB’s campus. They participated in spe-

cialized college courses, forensic labora-tory sessions and interactive learning, and had the opportunity to meet UB alumni and other professionals who have enjoyed successful careers as a result of their college educations. The HEROES Academy’s mission is to help the participating students fully real-ize their potential and encourage their dedication to attaining a college degree. On July 1, the University of Baltimore expanded to include two new colleges—the College of Public Affairs and the Yale Gordon College of Arts and Sciences—in addition to the Merrick School of Business and the School of Law. These two new colleges house all of the degree and certificate programs previously offered by the Yale Gordon College of Liberal Arts.

The new colleges, endorsed by the University System of Maryland Board of Regents, pave the way for UB’s contin-ued commitment to providing innova-tive education relevant to 21st-century

students. The new colleges are testament to the University’s commitment to strengthening its undergraduate educa-tion and enhancing its distinction in the fields of public administration and justice. Larry Thomas, former dean of the Yale Gordon College of Liberal Arts, serves as the founding dean of the Col-lege of Public Affairs. As the result of a national search, the University selected Diedre Badejo, former dean of the Col-lege of Letters, Arts and Social Sciences at California State University, East Bay, as the inaugural dean of the Yale Gordon College of Arts and Sciences.

UB Law School Alumnus Peter Angelos Makes Unprecedented Gift

Liberal Arts and Policy Building Honored

The University of Baltimore received a second $5 million donation in June 2010 for its new John and Frances Angelos Law Center from UB School of Law alumnus Peter Angelos, LL.B. ’61. The gift, in addition to Angelos’ initial donation of $5 million in June 2008, allowed the University to achieve its goal of $15 million in private funding for the building.

The private funding augments Mary-land state funding for construction of the 190,000-square-foot center at the northeast corner of North Charles Street and Mount Royal Avenue. The 12-story building, scheduled to open in January 2013, combines innovative design and cutting-edge technology that supports environmental sustainability to create an inviting, healthy and productive environment for the UB community.

With a striking, all-glass exterior and sustainable features throughout, the building will be a major focal point in Baltimore’s landscape as well as one of the most environmentally responsible public buildings ever to be built in the United States.

The design for the law center stemmed from an unprecedented international design competition, sponsored by the University and supported by a grant from the Abell Foundation, in fall 2008. The winning design was submitted by Behnisch Architekten of Stuttgart, Germany, in partnership with Baltimore’s Ayers/Saint/Gross, and the design work completed to date has received high praise from both city and state architectural review bodies. In Oct. 2009 the Midtown Development Corporation recognized the University of Baltimore’s Liberal Arts and Policy Building with a 2009 Midtown Develop-ment Award, one of several presented to private and public entities “to recognize and honor significant contributions, in the areas of development and planning, to the revival of Baltimore’s Midtown.”

UB Recognizedin Saviors of Our Cities Report

Truancy Court Program Flourishes

The University of Baltimore is one of three Baltimore institutions listed in the “honor roll” of the latest Saviors of Our Cities report, an ongoing national survey by researcher Evan S. Dobelle, president of Westfield State College in Westfield, Mass., of colleges and universities engaged in civic partnerships.

Saviors of Our Cities and its civic engagement focus are concerned with “the positive economic, social, and cul-tural impact that institutions of higher education have upon the cities in which they reside,” the report’s narrative states.

“Results illustrate the broad range of engagement initiatives currently being implemented and are designed to analyze the evolution, maturation, and growing sophistication of these efforts which have proven so vital to metropolitan areas across the nation.”

The report notes that in Oct. 2009, there are a number of institutions beyond those in the top 25 that have engaged in “lengthy cooperative efforts with community leaders to rehabilitate the cities around them.”

The Truancy Court Program, developed by the University of Baltimore School of Law’s Center for Families, Children and the Courts, continued to flourish during the 2009-10 academic year and has made significant strides toward addressing the truancy crisis in Baltimore city schools.

The TCP has served over 800 students and their families since the program began in 2005. Over and above reducing truancy rates, the TCP also has positively affected the behavior of the students in class, improved their class performance and increased communication between families and the school.

The program was developed in 2005 and brings together judges, counselors and education specialists with truant students, their parents, service providers, teachers and principals in an effort to improve overall school attendance.

The Truancy Court Program was created as a partnership between the Baltimore City Public School System, the Office of the Mayor of Baltimore city and the Circuit Court and District Court for Baltimore City. This initiative has succeeded with the support of the Charles Crane Family Foundation and the Maryland Administrative Office of the Courts.
