MEET MARICRUZ.

Maricruz Abarca has long dreamed of making an impact where it mattered most, but she’s had to overcome hurdles along the way.

She moved to America from Mexico as a teenager who had never been to school and couldn’t speak English. When she was pursuing her GED, she met a counselor at Baltimore City Community College that helped her realize that learning the language could open many doors.

It was the spark Maricruz, an already busy mother of three, didn't know she needed. Encouraged, she started classes at Baltimore City Community College and transferred to The University of Baltimore with help from a scholarship from the William and Lanaea C. Featherstone Foundation.

She is pursuing a B.A. in Philosophy, Law and Ethics and hopes to enroll in law school to achieve her dream of working in criminal law.

She also hopes to become mayor of Baltimore so she can "give back to the city that gave to me and embraced me when I needed it most."
