Founded in 1961 as the “Technische Hogeschool Twente”,the University of Twente has over the past 50 years grown to become one of the world’s leading universities. It performs cutting-edge work in developing new technologies and also places a particular focus on the resulting impact for humanity and society. The 9,700 students and over 3,000 members of the university staff develop not only pioneering technologies, but also combine them with behavioural research, social sciences and economics. An interdisciplinary approach that makes the University of Twente different from other universities – and that makes its graduates the problem-solvers of the future.

STARTING WITH A FEW FIGURESThe University of Twente is one of 14 Dutch universities recognized and funded by the national government. The programme of courses offered in Enschede includes 20 Bachelor’s and 36 Master’s degrees in the categories of engineering and natural sciences, social and behavioural sciences and business

and management. Over the past two decades alone, university activities have led to the creation of about 900 spin-off companies that “utilize” the research results of students, staff members and postgraduates – and therefore make a direct contribution to regional and national economic growth.

THE TWENTE PHILOSOPHY: HIGH TECH HUMAN TOUCHThe University of Twente engages in teaching and research in the conviction that important innovations can only be driven forward in an interdisciplinary environment. The latest developments in nanotechnology are to be found in areas in which physicists and chemists collaborate. In developing new media, computer scientists rely on know-how provided by psychologists. And for high-tech applications like rehab-robots or intelligent cars, engineers

are needed just as much as business experts who know how to market new products. The interactions taking place between the new technologies and society are another exciting field of research. Interdisciplinary thinking has the highest priority in Twente.

TWENTE – AN INTERNATIONAL COMPARISON In 2012, the University of Twente came top of the Leiden Ranking for Dutch universities. According to the Times Higher Education Supplement (THES), UT has been ranked in the top 200 universities worldwide for the past six years. In 2014, Twente was ranked at number 170. I-graduate survey results show that Twente is in the top ten research institutes worldwide for technology, IT support and internet access.

Shortage of resources, environmental pollution and a considerable divide in the global distribution of economic wealth are just a few of the enormous challenges that have to be met in order to guarantee sustainable conditions that make life worth living on this planet. Scientific research has a special role to play in this regard – technological advances and their effects on people’s lives are decisive factors in generating a better future. The University of Twente’s mission is to make a substantial contribution to making the world a better place.

The university has four research institutes, all of which are outstanding in their scientific field. Some are even world leaders in the development of certain key technologies. Twente has a leading position in various international scientific networks. Despite, or perhaps because of, its tranquil setting, the Enschede campus is the perfect place to make real progress. Its facilities inspire researchers and students – and do so across the borders of various specialist fields and disciplines. The opportunities

offered to budding scientists and engineers are almost boundless. Below is a short overview of the four institutes:

MESA+ INSTITUTE FOR NANOTECHNOLOGYThe MESA+ Institute for Nanotechnology is one of the world’s largest nanotechnology research institutes. A total of 525 researchers work together on cutting-edge research at the highest level. MESA+ boasts a 1250m² state-of-the-art NanoLab. This lab is

QS WORLD UNIVERSITY RANKINGSThe QS World University Rankings currently consider over 2,000 and evaluate over 700 universities in the world, ranking the top 400. QS World University Rankings claim to be more independent than other rankings because peer review is an important factor in their research. The ranking is partly based on hard data (faculty/student ratio, citations per faculty, proportion of international students per faculty), with considerable weight being given to data obtained from two large global surveys – one among academics and another among employers (academic reputation, employer reputation).

University of Twente’s overall ranking in 2013/2014: 228

QS STARSQS Stars is a new initiative that gives universities the opportunity to highlight their strengths on the basis of recognition given. It is a tool for assessing universities on a broad set of criteria; universities are ultimately awarded a badge displaying a number of stars based on their audit. The University of Twente is the first university in the Netherlands to join the QS Stars initiative. Based on the evaluation of several criteria, QS awarded University of Twente five stars, which puts it among the best universities in the world.

Are you interested in different cultures and academic approaches? If so, our joint programmes might be just the ticket for you! Joint programmes have an integrated curriculum and are coordinated and offered jointly with prestigious higher education institutes around the globe. They lead to a single, joint, double or multiple degree.

JOINT DEGREEA joint degree is awarded after successful completion of a joint programme. It is a single diploma awarded by at least two higher education institutions offering an integrated programme and it is officially recognized in the countries where the degree awarding institutions are located.

DOUBLE DEGREEA double degree consists of two national degrees awarded by two higher education institutions to students who have successfully completed the joint programme offered by the two institutions. The degrees are officially recognized in the countries where the degree awarding institutions are located.

A double degree consists of two different diplomas (unlike a joint degree, which is one single diploma).

You will take two different programmes simultaneously, either at the same institution or at different institutions (sometimes in different countries).

JOINT PROGRAMMES

16MASTER’S DEGREES

Page 17: Universiteit Twente Master Brochure 2014

Since you study in two programmes simultaneously it will take you less time to earn two degrees than it would take you to earn them separately. These joint programmes are usually longer than a ‘standard’ Master’s programme.

MULTIPLE DEGREEA multiple degree consists of separate degrees awarded to students who successfully complete a joint programme offered by two or more higher education institutions.

Applied Mathematics at the University of Twente focuses on mathematical modelling and analysis. Mathematical modelling requires detailed knowledge of one or more fields of application. It deals not only with tools and techniques, but also requires a high degree of abstraction (disregarding aspects that are irrelevant to the core of the problem) and formal reasoning.

The Master’s in Applied Mathematics offers three specializations. The specialization in Mathematical Physics and Computational Mechanics is driven by problems that arise in physical or technical systems, e.g. environmental issues or biological systems. The specialization in Mathematics and Applications of Signals and Systems is concerned with the mathematical analysis of complex dynamical systems in conjunction with control components (feedback). It involves aspects of various disciplines, including electrical and mechanical engineering, computer science and process control. The specialization in Operations Research will give you a scientific attitude, combined with the necessary engineering skills to tackle problems in the broad field of

‘I am always impressed by how different types of research are brought together’NAME RAHMA MUTHIA

MSC CHEMICAL ENGINEERING

COUNTRY OF ORIGIN INDONESIA

It was October 2011 when I attended a European Higher Education Fair (EHEF) in Jakarta. I gathered a

lot of information about several universities where I could continue my studies at Master’s level.

Once I had looked everything over, I knew that the University of Twente provided a Master’s programme

that really matched my interests.

Now, based on my experience of studying and living here, I would not hesitate to recommend the University of Twente to anyone starting their studies.

In the early stages of my second year here, I am confident that things are going well academically. Studying Chemical Engineering and specializing in Sustainable Process Technology at the UT gives me the opportunity to learn how to tackle engineering case studies while familiarizing myself with the logarithms to solve problems. I finished a Process Plant Design course in the last term of my first year. My group had to propose a design of a propionic acid plant. Before jumping straight in and figuring out how to make a good simulation of the process, we were taught how to select the best process routes. I am glad to know that my engineering skills have improved through learning at the University.

In addition to my studies, I can honestly say that I am really happy to be here on the UT campus. I like the international atmosphere. When we hold discussions in the classroom, people always speak English and everybody respects each other’s opinion. I am particularly amazed by the facilities: the buildings on the UT campus are artistic and very modern. The UT is highly advanced in terms of engineering tools and other research instruments. I am always impressed by how different types of research are brought together. A research project in a specific field always seems to be related to the other projects with similar goals. For instance, in my Master’s programme, we conducted research on capturing CO2 from the air. Another study is being launched to develop a process for producing chemicals, such as methanol, using that CO2. It’s a good example of how most of the studies at the University of Twente are intertwined.

This is the premier Civil Engineering and Management programme in the Netherlands, focusing extensively on both the technical and non-technical aspects of planning, design, construction and maintenance of civil engineering projects and systems.

High-speed rail travel, the Betuwe freight railway, dike improvements, innovative beach nourishment techniques such as the sand engine and the ‘Manhattan on the Meuse’ development project in Rotterdam are all technologically feasible projects. Technology, however, is not the only determining factor in the result. Many other elements need to be taken into account early in the planning phase of real estate and infrastructure projects. These range from politics, policy, participation and permit procedures to land expropriation, environmental impact studies, costs, budgeting and price control, as well as logistic efficiency and safety. This requires engineers who demonstrate mastery of the development process and who can oversee, analyse and predict all aspects of the design and implementation of such projects.

IF YOU ARE EAGER TO FOCUS ON BOTH THE TECHNICAL AND NON-TECHNICAL ASPECTS OF CIVIL ENGINEERING PROJECTS AND SYSTEMS, THEN THE MASTER’S IN CIVIL ENGINEERING AND MANAGEMENT IS THE PROGRAMME FOR YOU.

MSC EMBEDDED SYSTEMS

COUNTRY OF ORIGIN INDIA

My name is Prithivi Ram and I am pursuing my Master of Science in Embedded Systems at the University

of Twente. It was after some extensive research and positive references that I decided to break the

barriers and fly away to the Netherlands. Even though this is not a common destination for Indian

students, I knew, once I had arrived, that I had made a really good decision.

I was an ambitious person from a modest family with the desire of going to a foreign country. I followed my dreams and here I am, pursuing my Master’s in Embedded Systems at the University of Twente.

For most Indian students, the Netherlands is not a common country to go to for your studies. But after arriving here, I realized I had made a really good decision. The education system is more research and project oriented. All the courses are very well structured and are taught by skilled professors. All Master’s courses are intended to develop industrial skills alongside academic excellence. In the last twelve months I’ve been here, I can say that I’ve gained a lot of skills but, also, that I’ve had a lot of fun.

The Dutch are really nice; they never hesitate to help you when you are in need. For example, when I have trouble understanding the signboards, banners and caution

alerts on the road side, I can always find people to translate it for me. The Dutch are quite happy to help foreigners and are very welcoming and hospitable. There are quite some Indians doing their PhD’s and Post Doc’s here. We have an active Indian students association here at the University of Twente, organizing events, tours, and trips on special occasions to make you feel like home.

I’m very glad that I have chosen the University of Twente and I’m proud to be part of this intellectually stimulating environment. It has definitely shaped me into a better Engineer and a better human. Ten years from now, I see myself leading an active research team engaged in work of direct industrial relevance aimed at resolving the problems of mankind in the field of Image Processing and Computer Vision. I would gladly recommend the University of Twente to my fellow Indian friends.

This cutting-edge Master’s programme focuses on

the design of embedded systems: the hardware

and software that control a device, process or

system and are incorporated in many products that

we use every day, such as smart phones or

navigation systems.

An embedded system is a combination of hardware systems (electrical engineering) and software systems (computer science) built into equipment that we don’t always recognize as computerized. These include the systems that control a pacemaker, a car’s anti-lock brakes, the automatic pilot of an aircraft, the chip set and software in a set-top box for digital TV or the sensors, actuators, control algorithms and filters used in processing plants. Embedded systems call for real-time operation, reliability, maintainability and cost effectiveness, which places heavy demands on software (user interfaces, data processing, machine control) and hardware (I/O, Asics, DSP, FPGA).

The Master’s focuses on the design of embedded systems, with courses that include electronics and maths but also teach you processor architecture and how to realize digital systems. You will have the opportunity to focus on topics ranging from control engineering, integrated circuit design and computer architecture, to communication networks, real-time operating systems and software engineering. A unique feature of this programme is its affiliation with the 3TU partnership, enabling you to take courses at three separate universities of technology.

Our graduates are eminently employable. You might consider a research position at a university or in a corporate R&D department. Many companies need engineers with skills that bridge the gap between hardware and software.

The uses are many and varied and have already become part of our daily lives to some extent. Remote sensing is the collection and analysis of scientific data on phenomena at, above or below the Earth’s surface without the need for physical contact. This data can be collected using aerial photography, radar, and airborne electronic scanning devices. Satellites have been playing an increasingly significant role in recent decades. Remote sensing techniques and the images they produce can be used to monitor environmental changes and meteorological disturbances, to determine the existence of mineral deposits, or to detect the build-up of pressure along faults in the Earth’s crust.

Given the huge quantities of data involved, help is needed at ground level. This is where geographical information systems (GIS) come in. At the heart of every GIS is the database that stores the information on which the eventual output depends. Specially designed software processes the data for use in real-world applications: from studying trend patterns and examining environmental issues to simulating the outcomes of project proposals or planning procedures.

GEOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION SYSTEMS AND REMOTE SENSING TOOLS CAN HELP SOLVE REAL-WORLD PROBLEMS AND COMPLEX ISSUES CONCERNING HEALTHCARE, FOOD SECURITY, CLIMATE, WATER, URBAN PLANNING, SECURITY AND LAND SCARCITY.

MSC MECHANICAL ENGINEERING

COUNTRY OF ORIGIN THE NETHERLANDS

After the Bachelor’s programme in Mechanical Engineering it was a logical step for me to opt for the

follow-up Master’s programme in Mechanical Engineering. The Bachelor’s was a good preparation:

it taught me all I needed to know to move up to the next level.

The Master’s has challenging courses on a wide range of subjects. During my Bachelor’s I discovered an interest in fluids, so I have decided to specialize in Engineering Fluid Dynamics. The university is surrounded by a lot of high-tech companies. That gives students all kinds of job and internship opportunities, both on and off the campus. I am about to start my internship in Fluid Dynamics in Brazil. It’s a great opportunity to learn more about the field and exciting to be doing it in the context of another culture.

What I like most about the University of Twente is the fact that it’s a campus university. You meet and interact with all sorts of people from different cultural and educational backgrounds. This interaction gives you a broader view, and that experience helps you solve the problems that you encounter. It also helps you develop and recognize your own interests. If you would like to develop, both personally and as an engineer, the University of Twente is a great place to be!

Master’s programme in Mechanical Engineering,

you will zoom in on one of these disciplines.

Almost every aspect of our modern world is in some way a product of mechanical engineering, from power stations and oil refineries to steel factories and flood barriers. Mechanical engineers are behind all our modern means of transport: air, sea, rail, road or rocket. But their contribution does not stop there. Mechanical engineers are responsible for major innovations in fields such as medicine and biomedicine. These include robot-controlled surgical tools, ‘smart’ prostheses such as heart valves and miniature cameras for internal exploration. From large scale industrial installations to intricate mechanisms in the field of medicine, mechanical engineers put high-tech solutions in a human context. Mechanical engineers are involved in the entire process, from generating the initial idea to design and analysis, and onward to the development of products, processes and systems. This Master’s programme offers unique opportunities to combine these various disciplines and invites you to push the boundaries of what is possible in the field of Mechanical Engineering.

During the Master’s programme, you will choose one of three competence profiles: Research & Development (R&D), Design and Construction (D&C) or Organization & Management (O&M). ‘I truly start understanding when I discover why things happen in a particular way’NAME TRUDY VAN RUITEN

MSC TECHNICAL MEDICINE

COUNTRY OF ORIGIN THE NETHERLANDS

I obtained my Bachelor’s in Technical Medicine at the University of Twente. After taking a year out to

backpack through Asia, I returned to study for my Master’s in Technical Medicine, specializing in

Medical Imaging and Interventions. It was the combination of technology and medicine - two fields in

which I was interested - that inspired me to head in this direction.

In this programme you learn to combine two disciplines, which results in better ways to integrate technology in healthcare and enables you to optimize diagnostics and treatment. For me, learning is always about asking why. I truly start understanding when I discover why things happen in a particular way. Logical reasoning and the challenges involved in solving medical problems: that’s what makes Technical Medicine the ideal programme for me.

I have worked on connecting the chordea tendineae to a defective heart valve and cardiac wall using a procedure that is as minimally invasive as possible. During the

project it became clear that this was a very big assignment. Our final product ended up not being a completely new treatment plan, but a list of requirements for developing a new technique. What I liked about the project was that we got into the anatomy, pathology and physiology of the heart, and we explored the use of potential imaging techniques and minimally invasive cardiac procedures.

In addition to the skills classes, where we learn to inject and stitch for example, I am exploring MRI, CT, PET and other imaging techniques with a view to optimizing patient diagnostics and treatment.

What can be done to organize healthcare efficiently, putting patient wellbeing first? The Master’s programme in Health Sciences focuses on improving quality, effectiveness and patient/staff safety in healthcare.

The healthcare sector is in a constant state of flux. Developments in medical technology have changed our perception of ideal healthcare. An ageing population has led to a greater incidence of conditions such as strokes and Alzheimer’s. In the long term we can expect a huge rise in the demand for care, partly because of the rapid development in medical technologies. Moreover, patients are becoming more vocal: they no longer just sit back and wait, but are now critical consumers. Insurance systems are also subject to increasingly stringent requirements and frequent amendments to legislation.

All these developments have massive implications for healthcare. Which technology should be introduced and which should not? What obstacles will we meet along the way? How can we improve healthcare delivery? How can we involve patients in the decision-making process? Finding and communicating the best solutions to these problems is a real challenge. As a Health

‘In your future profession you will not be standing in front of the class as a teacher’NAME DAIAN SAMAN

MSC EDUCATIONAL SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY

COUNTRY OF ORIGIN MEXICO

As a teacher in a small village school in Mexico, my mother changes the future of many children.

She is my biggest source of inspiration. I worked in IT – a hard, money-driven world – and discovered

that, with my technical background, I could make a greater contribution to society.

I made a deliberate choice to gain broader experience and do more with my interest in education. This Master’s programme in Enschede is exactly what I was looking for. You learn how to use technology to raise education to a higher level and make it accessible to more people. For example, we design smart online teaching programs and serious games and learn better ways to tailor these products and methods to specific target groups. From pupils and teachers in primary education to professionals on the shop floor, I can really make a difference to anyone who has a desire to learn.

I really like the focus of the Master’s in Educational Science and Technology at Twente. “In your future profession you will not be standing in front of the class as a teacher. For the greater part, you will be working behind the scenes, contributing to making knowledge more appealing and accessible to people of all ages and backgrounds.” More and more jobs and study programmes are becoming multidisciplinary, and this

Master’s offers different tracks depending on what you want to specialize in. The aim is to balance education and other disciplines, such as Human Resources Development, and Computer Science. I like the fact that I’m developing a unique profile by being able to combine two areas, it gives me a multidisciplinary background that will be very useful in the complex world we live in. When you live abroad, culture shock is almost unavoidable. As with any experience, it’s good to be prepared for the challenges. Take into account that Dutchies like to plan ahead, and they are big on punctuality and honesty. If you want to meet up with your Dutch classmates, you need to schedule a meeting and, whatever you do, make sure you’re on time, as they think it’s very disrespectful to keep somebody waiting. Dutchies are well known for their directness, so try not to take their comments personally. It’s just that they appreciate honesty at all times; they do not mean to hurt your feelings. An additional tip: be prepared for cold weather and not seeing the sun very often during winter!

It requires an affinity with technology and the ability to philosophically reflect on the influence of technology on society.

PSTS is the premier Master’s programme for learning how to critically analyse and assess the impact of scientific and technological developments on society. How are information and communication technologies affecting our privacy? Can we anticipate the future implications of nanotechnology for society? Are there ethical limits to the genetic modification of animals and human beings? How do new technologies change our behaviour and our perceptions of the world? These are just some of the vital questions we address.

PSTS is characterized by its empirical approach. Rather than focusing only on the philosophical tradition or seeking to understand technology in general, it analyses and evaluates specific technologies and their impact on society. This combination of philosophy and technology is the hallmark of the PSTS programme, making it an ideal choice not only for philosophy and social science students, but also for students with a technical background. In the Master’s programme in Psychology, you will not only examine how people behave, but also acquire the knowledge and understanding of psychological theories to analyse behaviour systematically. You will design effective and workable solutions for individuals (e.g. internet therapy for depression) or for groups (e.g. childhood obesity therapy), using technological applications where possible. These might include computer games that enhance learning skills, online healthcare interventions or iPhone apps to report neighbourhood crime.

The Master’s in Psychology at the University of Twente is unique due to the applied nature of our five specializations, each with its own profile. Human Factors & Engineering Psychology teaches you to design and improve technological applications in cognitive psychology. Positive Psychology & Technology focuses not only on treating psychological disorders, but also on promoting good mental health and well-being. In Conflict, Risk & Safety, you will study themes related to risk perception and communication, conflict and crisis management, and the causes and remediation of antisocial and criminal behaviour. The Health Psychology specialization focuses on the question of how to promote healthy behaviour. Finally, the specialization in Learning Sciences trains you to specify, explain and predict learning processes.

Following completion of your Master’s degree, you will have the opportunity to prove your worth to society as an expert in human behaviour. The position and the sector you work in will partly depend on your Master’s specialization. “The focus was on developing leadership skills through training and coaching”NAME PAVEL CHOLAKOV

MSC BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION

COUNTRY OF ORIGIN BULGARIA

My name is Pavel Cholakov and I am taking the Master’s in Business Administration at the University of Twente. My specialization is in Financial Management. During my time at Twente, I had the honour and privilege to chair the Erasmus Student Network Twente, a foundation whose main goal is to ease the transition of international students in the Netherlands and help them adapt. In addition I was accepted by the university’s Master’s Honours Programme, entitled Change Leaders in Research, Engineering, Management, and Entrepreneurship & Consulting. My major interest is entrepreneurship. In 2011, shortly after finishing my Bachelor’s degree, I founded my own company and I am currently involved in a couple of start-ups.

CHANGE LEADERSAs I mentioned above, Change Leaders is Twente’s excellence programme for Master’s students. After I became familiar with the programme, it did not take me long to decide to participate. A decision I am more than happy with a year later. A big difference from other leadership programmes I have attended is that it comprised two parts: one cognitive and one experiential. In the cognitive part, we examined a great many studies on the topic of leadership and had amazing guest lecturers. They were all leaders in their

respective fields, including a couple of renowned CEOs, a managing partner in a law firm and a best-selling author. While this was great, the icing of the cake was the experiential part, with individual coaching by professional leadership instructors. The focus was on developing leadership skills through training and coaching to produce a project as an end-result. The best way to retain knowledge is by putting it into practice.

UNIVERSITY LIFE, DUTCH STYLEStudying in the Netherlands can help foreign students develop an open mind and a more international perspective. The Dutch education system is interactive and focuses on teamwork, independence and a proactive approach. People from many different cultures and religions live, work and study in the Netherlands. This creates an interesting multicultural society where different ideas are valued and respected.

INTERNATIONAL STUDENT ASSOCIATIONSEach university has a network of associations that bring students together for academic activities, sports and recreation. All of these associations are run by students, and some of them are geared especially towards international students. Three of the larger international student associations – AIESEC, AEGEE and the Erasmus Student Network (ESN) – are all active at the University of Twente. Of course, there are plenty of pubs, restaurants and other meeting places where students hang out. Generally speaking, the Dutch higher education community seeks to be part of society, not isolated from it.

ABOUT THE NETHERLANDSThe Netherlands is situated in Western Europe. It borders on Germany to the east, Belgium to the south and the North Sea to the north and west. Many European capitals are within easy reach: Brussels is only two hours away by train, and a short flight from Amsterdam will take you to London, Paris, Madrid or Berlin. The Netherlands’ relatively small area of just over 41,000 square kilometres is home to over 16.7 million people. The Netherlands is a safe country by international standards.

TRANSPORTATIONYou don’t really need a car to get around in the Netherlands. It is a small country and its well-organized and safe public transport network will take you almost anywhere you want to go. But nothing beats travelling by bike, the country’s number one mode of transport. During the introduction days for international students we will help you buy your very own bike.

THE HEART AND SOUL OF STUDENT LIFEColourful weekly markets, friendly bars and bustling shopping streets are all part of life in Enschede. Just like its well-tended parks and historic facades, behind which many a museum or theatre is tucked away. But it’s Enschede’s student population that gives the city its unique flair, as they bike to their classes, read their books on the banks of Rutbeek lake or make merry in the pubs of the Old Market.

A STUDENT CITY TO CALL HOMEEnschede just wouldn’t be the same without its students. Hardly surprising when you consider that almost a third of the town’s 157,000 inhabitants are living the student life. This border town is home to no less than three higher education institutions: the University of Twente, Saxion University of Applied Sciences and the ArtEZ Institute of the Arts. The centre of student life is undoubtedly the University of Twente campus, with its modern buildings, laboratories, student residences, sports centres, bars, restaurants and theatre. Here you can hear languages from all over the world but settling in and making new friends couldn’t be easier thanks to the university’s compact layout and the wide range of leisure activities on offer in the city.

SOOTHING GREEN SPACES Prefer to take it easy and tune in to the sound of birdsong? No problem. Enschede is one of the greenest cities in the Netherlands. Kick back and relax in one of its many parks head out into the country, just a short bike ride or walk away. There’s a 52-kilometre walking and cycling route running right through

the city’s green belt. Sunseekers, watersports fans and anyone who wants to escape their desk for a while should make a beeline for Rutbeek lake, where you can swim, surf, study or idle away the hours to your heart’s content.

NOT TO BE MISSEDBATAVIEREN RACEIn the spring, about 7,500 students take part in the Batavieren Race, the largest relay race in the world. The participants run from Nijmegen to Enschede in 25 stages. In time-honoured tradition, the race ends with a massive student party.

GREEN VIBRATIONSEvery year on Ascension Day, the University of Twente campus plays host to the Green Vibrations festival. Festival-goers dance all day and into the evening to the music of local bands and DJs. The revels are followed by an afterparty in the Vesting Bar, right next door to the festival site.

HBO BACHELOR’S STUDENTS As a Bachelor’s student from a university of applied sciences (HBO), you can apply for admission to both one and two-year Master’s programmes. In order to obtain and/or improve the knowledge and skills needed to start a Master’s programme, it is often necessary to follow an additional pre-Master’s programme which you have to pass in order to gain admission to the Master’s programme. Pre-Master’s programmes range from 30 to 45 ECTS credits. Admission to a Master’s or pre-Master’s programme largely depends on your previous study programme. There are two routes for HBO students, depending on where you have studied:

• Students who studied at Saxion can begin the transfer during their HBO studies

• All other HBO students begin the transfer after completing their HBO studies.

SAXION STUDENTSSaxion University of Applied Sciences and the University of Twente cooperate in many different fields, in particular by offering solid opportunities for transfer. Saxion students have the opportunity to take a minor that consists of University of Twente pre-Master’s courses, worth 30 credits. This is known as a transfer minor (doorstroomminor in Dutch). The minor will still count as part of

the Saxion curriculum, but will also serve as a stepping stone towards your transfer to a Master’s programme at the University of Twente. The minor usually grants direct admission to the Master’s but in some cases you may have to take additional courses. You can use this transfer option if you meet the following requirements: • 60 credits from first year• 60 credits from second year • Sufficient knowledge of

mathematics (apply for a Saxion course or obtain an exemption)

• Sufficient knowledge of English (apply for a Saxion course or obtain an exemption)

• A positive recommendation from your study adviser

• On completing your transfer minor (max. 30 credits), you may still need to take part of the pre-Master’s programme if you apply for a programme with a pre-Master’s study load of 45 credits. If this applies to you, you will be formally enrolled in a Bachelor’s programme.

Contact information for Saxion students: [email protected]

ALL OTHER HBO STUDENTSAfter finishing your Bachelor’s degree you can be admitted to a pre-Master’s. Please keep in mind that:

• Every Master’s programme has its own admission requirements and pre-Master’s. Carefully check the requirements of the Master’s you want to apply for.

• As a pre-Master’s student you will be formally enrolled as a Bachelor’s student.

If you have yet to complete your Bachelor’s degree, you can still apply for admission to a Master’s programme at the University of Twente. You may be granted a conditional acceptance based on your transcripts, detailed curriculum information, relevant research and

expected graduation date. However, you must submit proof of having obtained your Bachelor’s degree before you can start your Master’s.

OTHER DUTCH BACHELOR’S DEGREES As a student from any Dutch university you can apply for a one or two-year Master’s programme. Your Bachelor’s degree will not always directly qualify you for admission to the Master’s programme of your choice. Pre-Master’s programmes may vary in study load, from 30 to 60 ECTS credits. If you have yet to complete your Bachelor’s degree, you can still

apply for admission to a Master’s programme at the University of Twente.

This event gives you the opportunity to meet your fellow students and get to know Enschede and the university campus. We will also help you sort out

official arrangements such as your university registration and the first steps towards registration at the municipality of Enschede. If you have received a letter of acceptance from the university, you will be personally invited to attend the introduction days for international students. They can help you manage your expectations, deal with feelings of loneliness and help you cope if you fall behind with your studies while you are adapting to life here in the Netherlands. Whatever issue you are dealing with, you are always welcome to ask for support.
