MCS Equipment Specification Changes

Unity Connection 8.0 will not support the following MCS platforms (and their software only models): 7815I1, 7825I1, 7835I1, 7845I1, 7825H1, 7835H1, 7845H1

Connection 8.0 will support the following MCS platforms with hard drive upgrades (and their software only models): 7815I2, 7825I2, 7825H2. They will need a minimum of 160 GB drives.

Connection 8.0 will support the following MCS platforms with hard drive upgrades (and their software only models): 7835I2, 7835 H2, 7845I2, 7845H2. They will need a minimum of 146 GB drives.

Non Unity Connection 7835H2/I2 or 7845H2/I2 will need minimum disks of 146GB each. Refer to the CUCSPL for the number of drives required.

Running Connection 8.0 on VMware

Connection 8.0 supports virtualization on the VMware ESXi 4.0 software running on certain UCS hardware.

There are predefined Virtual Machine Overlays that the software can install on.

There are restrictions on what features of VMware are supported.

UCS Hardware supported

Cisco UCS B series blade servers

Cisco UCS C 210 series servers. The application will be running as a Virtual machine on VMware ESXi 4.0 software installed on the server.

Migrating from Unsupported Hardware

If you are running on a hardware that is not supported with Connection 8.0, you have to follow these basic steps –

1.Upgrade existing version to the latest 7.1(3) build.

2.Install 7.1(3) on a supported hardware or as a Virtual machine. VMs are allowed to install 7.1(3) only for the purpose of migration and will have a time bound license.

3.Use DRS to migrate from the older platform to the newer platform.

4.Upgrade the 7.1(3) Connection to a 8.0 Connection software.

Migrating Physical to Virtual

To migrate from Physical to Virtual machines, follow these steps-

1.To migrate to a virtual machine, your physical hardware needs to be running at a minimum Connection 7.1(3). Once migrated over, the software needs to be upgraded to 8.0 for support.

2.Use DRS to migrate the data from the Physical machine to the Virtual machine.

DRS is also the recommended path to move from Virtual to Physical too.

Mixed environments without A/A

There is no issues running a mixed mode environment.

A Connection 8.0 running as a virtual machine is not considered to be different from a Connection 8.0 running on a Physical machine.

Follow the guideline on how many ports and users are supported on the particular overlays.

Physical and Virtual machines in a A/A pair

It is OK to have a Physical machine and a Virtual machine in a high availability Active/Active configuration.

The resources on the two machines have to match for this to work.

Connection 8.0 does not support have a HA pair with disparate hardware. This can lead to odd issues where data cannot be replicated due to different hard disk sizes.
