The emergence and rapid spread of the novel coronavirus has disrupted lives throughout our community and in ways that many of us never expected. Our focus on the immediate situation should not allow us to overlook the consequences that closed schools, shuttered workplaces and overwhelmed hospitals are having on people’s longer-term education, health and financial stability, particularly the most vulnerable in our community. Since the pandemic reached our community, the Midlands’ health and human service organizations have experienced a surge in demand for services from our neighbors who have been significantly impacted by the outbreak. Thanks to partners like you, United Way of the Midlands activated immediately by mobilizing, convening and deploying resources to provide support where it was needed most, including starting the COVID-19 Response Fund with 100% of proceeds going to help those in need. Join us to take the next step toward recovery. Our campaign is more important than ever in providing United Way and its partners with the resources they need to help our community recover, including building resiliency and providing tutoring for elementary school children. As the Midlands slowly emerges from this pandemic, we can’t go back to normal. We must do better, and we must do it differently. Your support is more crucial than ever to help both children and adults bridge the gaps that this virus has created. Join United Way at the forefront in re-thinking how we provide all people with the health, education and economic opportunities they need and deserve. Before, During and After, United Way is Here Before the pandemic hit and places closed, United Way was already meeting with Community Impact Partners, health care providers, government officials and others to prepare. Our staff and volunteers have worked tirelessly from home and in the field to meet the needs of those affected. Our COVID-19 Response Fund was created to help local residents meet basic needs including food, shelter and assistance with rent and utility bills. We also provided Internet to youth experiencing homelessness in shelters so that they wouldn’t fall behind in school, delivered 5,000 books to students in eight school districts and continued to provide home-delivered meals for seniors without interruption. And United Way will be here to keep leading the way to recovery.
