Passive voice

Neil Armstrong was the first man on the

moon.

The first man on the moon was Neil

Armstrong.

Examples

Christopher Columbus discovered America.

America was discovered by Christopher

Columbus.

Passive voice is used when the focus is on the action.

It is not important who or what is performing the action.

Passive voice

My mobile was stolen.

Present passive

The active voice is the “normal” voice, the one

we use most of the time.

In the active voice, the object receives the

action of the verb.

Cats eat mice.

The passive voice is less common.

In the passive voice, the subject

receives the action of the verb.

Mice are eaten by cats.
