Unilorin student meets Obama, seeks better deal for Africa By Fatimah Abubakre

An alumnus of the University of Ilorin, Olusola Owonikoko, who is also a fellow of the Mandela Washington Fellowship for Young African

Leaders, was among the 500 dynamic young African leaders present at the 2015 Presidential Summit of the Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI), which held from August 2 to August 5, 2015 in Washington DC, USA.

The Mandela Washington Fellowship for Young African Leaders is a gathering of young leaders between ages 25-35 from across the African continent. They underwent six weeks of intensive leadership training and mentoring in business and entrepreneurship, civic engagement and public administration, in 20 US universities and colleges.

At the Summit, Owonikoko, a 27-year old graduate of the Department of Microbiology, University of Ilorin, had asked the American President, Barack Obama, what the USA was willing to do about brain-drain whereby the brightest minds of Africa flock to the West at the detriment of their respective countries, and how building African capacity and universities fit into the US administration's

investments likePower Africa.

In his response, President Obama described it as an excellent question, saying that building African capacity was a major component of US investments like Power Africa.

President Obama further noted that there were challenges of inclusive development, fighting terrorism, dealing with conflict and climate change, and increasing women's and children's rights, which he stated, are bigger than any one nation or continent can confront.

After the Question-and-Answer segment, Owonikoko was singled out for invitation to the White House where he had a one-on-one interaction with the US President.

The Unilorin Microbiology graduate, who had been involved for over five years as a social worker and development practitioner in Nigeria, was also opportune to discuss issues concerning Africa and proffer recommendations for the YALI programme, with Obama's National Security Advisor, Ambassador Susan Rice, who also is charged with the coordination and integration of the Administration's foreign policy and intelligence efforts.

Owonikoko was also at the Wagner College, New York, where he undertook a six-week course on Civic Leadership. He also worked with the “Lifestyle for the Disabled”, a US-based organisation that provides a realistic work settings and experiences for intellectually disabled people.

The Unilorin graduate, who also earned a Certificate in Public Health from the Harvard University, expressed his gratitude to his lecturer and mentor, Dr. Olusoji Igunnugbemi, from whom he had learned to always be prepared.Owonikoko (right) posing his question to President Obama on the occasion
