Explaining the significant use of the radio inwireless and mobile communications, military purposes, meteorology, maritime communication, globalnavigation and satellite systems among others, theDirector of the Computer Services and InformationTechnology (COMSIT), University of Ilorin, disclosedthat a nation that cannot control its space environmentwill lose out in the information and communicationstechnology age, which is primarily driven by the radio. He stressed that Nigeria as a nation blessed with highlyresourceful manpower, cannot afford to be left behind inthis respect.

He said, “Our quests for the understanding of thisresource can only continue to increase realising theadvantages inherent in the use of radio.”

Citing “the first work in dominion”, which is 'Letthere be light and there was light', the don said, “God inHis sovereignty used the electromagnetic wave (light) toovercome darkness, and ever since man has been usinglight for dominion.”

Prof. Adimula pointed that most radioinfrastructure in the country were based on modelsdeveloped for the temperate regions of the world, addingthat research works carried out by him, and hiscolleagues, provided vital information for the design andmanufacture of appropriate radio infrastructure in thecountry and for the tropics generally.

He contended that “in the future, radio serviceswill determine how we run our lives”, saying that “Today, mobile phones are pointers to how we shall be runningour lives. Few years ago, it took the Concorde (the fastestcommercial aircraft ever made) aircraft about three hoursto travel with tons of books from UK to Nigeria; (buttoday) those same tons of books are carried by radio inoptical fibres in a matter of seconds to our computers ormobile devices.”

While stressing the importance of research, thescholar revealed that in the next few years, pilotlesscommercial aircraft should be available.

He said, “The original motivation for satellitenavigation was for military purposes, but now satellitenavigation is finding many applications in civilian andcommercial uses. Research is at an advanced stage in thisfield, and Nigeria should not be on the side lines; researchin the development stage may appear costly, but the costof a finished work is costlier.”

He tasked members of the University of Ilorincommunity, and the nation as a whole, to rise to the

challenge of the 21 century by taking advantages of theinstalled fibre optic technology in conformity with herexercise of dominion in teaching and research.

Prof. Adimula then tasked the University ofIlorin, “being a foremost University in the country andblessed with highly resourceful manpower” to “makeextra effort in investing in radio and space research”saying that “Space is not an unlimited resource, it isalready getting congested”.

While commending the spirit behind theestablishment of agencies such as National SpaceResearch and Development Agency, (NASRDA) andNigerian Communications Satellite (NIGCOMSAT), thelecturer charged the Federal Government to ensure thatcompetent scientists with proven records are appointedto head the agencies. He said, “The matter of space andradio should be above mere political considerations”.

Stressing the need for a general overhaul of thescience curricula in secondary schools, polytechnics anduniversities, Prof. Adimula said, “A situation wheresomebody will sit in the comfort of his sitting room andprovide generalised curricula for all NigerianUniversities cannot hold in this age if there should beaccelerated match towards growth and development.”

The outgoing Registrar of the University of Ilorin,Mrs. Olufolake Oyeyemi, has enjoined membersof staff to cooperate with her successor, Mr.

Emmanuel Dada Obafemi, in moving the Universityforward as he takes over the mantle of leadership onMondayApril 29, 2013.

Speaking with in an extensiveinterview, Mrs. Oyeyemi, who rounds off her two termsof ten years as the Registrar ofthe University on April 28,2013, noted that the Universityof Ilorin has always been luckywith the quality of staff at thehigher rungs of the ladder.

The first female andlongest-serving Registrar of the3 8 y e a r- o l d U n i v e r s i t ydescribed Mr. Obafemi as anexperienced administrator whois well accepted to members ofthe University community.

S h e e x p r e s s e dconfidence in her successor'sability to manage the staff andguide them successfully assomeone who has served innearly every section in theUniversity.

“I have a stake in thismatter because one cannot besuccessful as a leader if youdon't have a good successor. In the area of performance, Ihave no doubt in my mind that he will deliver. I believehe will make a good successor to me as a person,” Mrs.Oyeyemi said.

Speaking with the experience which she hasgarnered over the years, Mrs. Oyeyemi said as Registrar,Mr. Obafemi has to advise objectively, eschewingsentiments of religion and ethnicity of any sort.

She said, “If you have sentiments of religion andethnicity, you will have problems because the personbecomes inconsistent; but if you are firm, basing your

decisions on the law, regulations and traditions of theUniversity and you have the advantage of history behindyou, you will hardly make any mistake. Sometimes youhave to take very hard decisions that are difficult butnecessary because of the system and you need todemonstrate courage and firmness.

“It is not a question of wickedness. One thing Ienjoy doing in my office is if you come to my officefrowning, I want you to go out smiling; I find a way of

making you smile and easing yourtension before you go even if Ican't do that which you want me todo.”

While revealing that sheenjoyed a robust workingrelationship with the generality ofmembers of staff, Mrs. Oyeyemisaid, “I believe that all staff areimportant. I want to tell my staffthat I love them, how I wish theyknow how much love I have forthem! In areas of welfare, we havetried our best, I have tried my bestand they know; I don't have to givedetails.”

She however stressed thatit is not possible to pleaseeverybody, saying, “You can't buthave a few who don't like yourpolicy because some may say sheis ' an iron lady' because they can'tget what they want. And not

everybody can be satisfied either, because of thetradition or the law of the University. Sometimes, I wantto really do something but because of regulations, Ican't.”

Mrs. Oyeyemi said, “If I come back ten times, under the same circumstances, I will do the same thingsthat I have done now if I have the regulations backing meup. Occasionally, one may look for loopholes to assist ifthat will help the system to grow but it doesn't happen allthe time.”

The Registrar of the University of Ilorin, Mrs.Olufolake O. Oyeyemi, has suggested theprofessionalisation of the administrative cadre

in the university system as a way of reviving thedwindling productivity of the concerned staff.

Mrs. Oyeyemi made this suggestion last Tuesday(April 16, 2013) while delivering the keynote addressduring an in-house training for Registry staff of theUniversity organised by the Centre for Research,Development and In-House Training (CREDIT), underthe Chairmanship of the Vice-Chancellor, Prof.AbdulGaniyuAmbali.

The Registrar noted that Nigerian universitiesnow churn out poor-quality graduates that areunemployable, adding that training acquired bygraduates from the universities does not prepare them tobe able to adequately tackle the needs of the country.

She therefore submitted that professionalism isimperative because, according to her, modern universityadministrators must be staff who are versed in their jobs, thorough, competent and exemplary.

Mrs. Oyeyemi stressed that universityadministrators must possess some specialisedknowledge and techniques, which will distinguish themfrom amateurs.

The Registrar stated that “the UniversityAdministrator must be able to assert himself and beready to move in the direction of the wind of changeblowing across the globe and be flexible in theapplication and interpretation of the rules andregulations of the University and be ready to recommendadjustments where necessary.”

She also advised that the 21 centuryadministrators must possess high level communicationskills as an administrative weapon of expression given

that communication is at the core of their mandate.Speaking further, she said that modern-day

administrators must be team players with excellent inter-personal skills, which she noted engender productivityand optimum performance.

In his welcome address, the Vice-Chancellor, whowas represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor(Academic), Prof. Bayo Lawal, described the training aspart of education for the Registry staff.

Reminding the Registry staff that education is alife long journey, which starts in the womb and ends inthe tomb, Prof. Lawal exhorted them to continuouslylearn and renew their knowledge.

He noted that the Registry in a knowledge-drivenglobal economy is the driving force of the University andthat administrative staff are crucial to the survival of theUniversity.

He commended the CREDIT for putting togethersuch a training programme and tasked Registry staff toread the Registry Manual.

Earlier in her remarks, the Director, CREDIT,Prof. (Mrs.)A. T. Oladiji, stated that good administratorsare not born but trained, noting that training can onlymake a person better.

Prof. Oladiji described the training as a goodinvestment by the University in line with the Vice-Chancellor's commitment to the training of all staff forefficiency and productivity.

Resource persons at the workshop included Mr.Michael O. Abikoye, Principal Assistant Registrar,National Open University (NOUN), Chief M. O.Ogunniyi, former Registrar, Ekiti State University, Dr.E. O. Sanya, Consultant Physician and Neurologist, andMr. E. D. Obafemi, Registrar-designate of the Universityof Ilorin.

Did you know?AST FACTS FILE

Bee and honey to the rescue

There is no insect in the entire creation that is as usefulto human beings as the bee. There is also no productthat is as beneficial to man as its honey. If you have

been stung recently by the bee, it is so good for you and ifyou have not been stung, you need to get a sting. Also, if youdon't have honey at home, it is not a good idea; and if youdon't take it often, you are missing something. The reason isnot far-fetched.

The bee is the most important insect to us, thesignificance of which is accentuated by the Qur'an whichnames a whole chapter after it (Chapter 16). As socialinsects that have Queens, workers, carpenters, soldiers, etc.,bees for many years have maintained a sort of city-life thathas inspired many people on social organisation. At anotherplane, the bee is so fascinating that its uniquecommunication system, especially its “tail-wagging dance”in the form of a squared figure eight with a straight middlesection, through which it communicates the source of nectarto its fellow bees, has attracted the attention of manyresearchers starting from the Austrian ethologist, Karl vonFrisch. But that is a different matter for another day.

In terms of their functionality, bees alone pollinateabout 80 per cent of crops and it is not an overstatement thatwithout the bee, we cannot be. This is because bees pollinateour crops, produce honey, beeswax, propolis, pollen, royaljelly, among other useful products. In terms of hard workand diligence, there are lessons to learn from the busy bee.

Of the many uses and products of the bee, the mostimportant is its honey, which is the only food in the worldthat does not expire. If you keep honey for years, it will stillremain good. The honey contains about 80 differentsubstances that are crucial to human nutrition. As FemiAbbas of recently noted, “honey contains all ofthe B-complex minerals like vitamins A, C, D, E and K aswell as trace elements such as magnesium, sulphur, phosphorous, iron, calcium, chlorine, potassium, iodine, sodium, copper and manganese.”

The usefulness of honey cannot be over-emphasised. It is the best medicine for various kinds ofdiseases. If you take honey, you are immunising yourself agreat deal. It is a good antidote for eye and ear diseases.Honey also cures tooth ache, insomnia, staphylococcus, constipation, whitlow and it is excellent for wounds andburns. It can be taken alone and can be taken with otherfoods. It is on record that honey cures 99 ailments andmedical conditions, including obesity, infections, Gingivitis

The Nation

(inflamed gums) and tooth decay, fungal infection, eczema, cold, arthritis, acne and cough.

It is the MTN that actually reignited my interest inthe bee and by implication, its honey. Like othersubscribers, I suppose, I received an alert this month on thenew cure for HIV/AIDS and I followed the link to a

report. It was exciting to realise that it has beenfound that the solution to the HIV/AIDS and cancer now liesin the bee, particularly the bee venom.

According to a research report published in thecurrent issue of , we are told, a team ofscientists at the Washington University School of Medicine,USA, “used nanoparticles carrying a toxin found in beevenom to destroy HIV without harming nearby cells.” Oneof the researchers, Dr. Samuel A. Wickline, said, “Beevenom contains a potent toxin called melittin that can pokeholes in the protective envelope that surrounds HIV andother viruses. It has even shown melittin-loadednanoparticles to be effective in killing tumor cells.”

When the newspaper interviewed anapiculturist in Ibadan in its edition of the 4th of this month, the response the man gave collaborated the results of the USresearchers. “The bee sting is very medicinal. A bee keeperwho is stung by a bee every now and then will not complainof any ailment because the bees have taken those thingsaway from you by enhancing your immunity. That is one ofthe best works of the bee venom,” he said. So, it is not a badthing if you are stung by a bee (please note the article)!

Realising the significance of honey, the alwaysforthright authorities of the University startedan Apiary project 10 years ago in partnership with theNational Youth Service Corps. Increased investment in theproject over the years has made the Unilorin bee farm haveabout 100 hives which have the capacity of producing500,000 litres of processed honey per year.

In a country filled with adulterated products, getting theoriginal honey is always hectic. But this is not so for themembers of the University community. “Unilorin Honey” isstrongly recommended as it has been tested and trusted bymany users and customers as original and unadulterated. Itis indeed than those marketed elsewhere to thebest of our knowledge. It is in one's own interest to alwaysuse or take honey and the best honey around here is that ofthe University of Ilorin. It is also in one's interest, seriously,to get stung by the bee occasionally. Won't you ratherreceive a bee sting today?
