he new Registrar of the University of Ilorin, Mr.Emmanuel Dada Obafemi, has charged staffmembers of the Registry Department and all

University staff in general to continue to discharge theirduties diligently and commit themselves anew to theservice of the University.

Mr. Obafemi, who gave the charge last Tuesday(April 30, 2013) during his maiden meeting with the staff,said, “There may be nothing new in what we are doing butI want us to turn a new leaf. It means that the way we havebeen contributing to this system, we will improve on itbased on our commitment which is going to arise from ourchange in attitude in the service of the University.”

Obafemi tasks staff on commitment to duty

Contrary to the prevailing impression thatgraduates produced by Nigerian universities areunemployable, the Vice-Chancellor of the

University of Ilorin, Prof. AbdulGaniyu Ambali, hasassured employers of labour within and outside thecountry that graduates of the University of Ilorin aretrained to be employable.

Prof. Ambali gave the assurance last Friday (May3, 2013) when he received members of the accreditationteam from Advertising Practitioners Council of Nigeria(APCON) who were on an accreditation visit to theinstitution's Department of Mass Communication.

‘Why Unilorin is varsity of first choice’

The Vice-Chancellor said that the University wascommitted to training students to enhance theiremployability, noting that “the University of Ilorin istrying to ensure that our graduates meet the requirementsof employers of labour and also meet all professionalrequirements that make them fit readily in theiremployment.”

“We want to ensure that the employers aresatisfied and we are keen on producing the best,” Prof.Ambali stated, adding that the University is currentlyproducing high-level man-power that now holds variouspositions of responsibilities in all sectors of the nation'seconomy.

The Vice-Chancellor stated further that theUniversity would continue to improve facilities across allFaculties, stressing that the University would continue tostrive to retain its number one position in the country.

Prof. Ambali pointed out that many parents arestruggling to secure admission for their wards in theUniversity of Ilorin because of the discipline that hasbeen seen in the University's graduates. This, the Vice-Chancellor attributed to the commitment of theUniversity to academic excellence and sound moraltraining for all students.

He described the Department of MassCommunication as the window through which the worldsees the University and assured the accreditation teamthat the University has equipped the Department to meetthe accreditation and training requirements.

The Vice-Chancellor commendedAPCON for itsmode of operation and professionalism, saying, “We are

very glad and happy that you are here. We are convincedthat you will add value to our students and programmes.”

Speaking earlier, the accreditation team leaderand APCON's Professional Development Director, Mr.Joe-Eugene Onuorah, said that APCON is a regulatoryagency of the government that ensures that only peoplewho meet the required qualifications are enrolled into theadvertising profession.

Mr. Onuorah stated further that accreditationleads to qualification into advertising without the needfor further examination for the graduates who havepassed their courses in accredited universities.

He said that the accreditation team's visit was tosee whether the University of Ilorin has complied withthe requirements that were earlier forwarded to theFaculty to ensure that students of Marketing, Graphics,Advertising and Public Relations are being taught theright courses.

The team leader commended the Universitymanagement for its prompt response to the Council'srequest for accreditation visit and towards thedevelopment of the Mass Communication course in theUniversity.

Other members of the accreditation teamincluded Dr. Rotimi Olatunji, Edohoekeh Eshiet, Mr.Rahmon Babatope Rahim and Dr. (Mrs.) Beatrice A.Laninhun. They were accompanied by the Dean, Facultyof Computer and Information Sciences, Prof. L. O. Ainaand the Head, Department of Mass Communication, Dr.MahmoudAbdulraheem.

The Industrial Training Fund (ITF), Ilorin AreaManager, Mrs. D. R. Kayode Aroloye, hascommended the University of Ilorin for the

working relationship between the two institutions on theStudent Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES).

Mrs. Aroloye gave the commendation last Friday(April 26, 2013) when she led her team on a courtesy callto the Vice-Chancellor, Prof.AbdulGaniyuAmbali as partof their visit to the University

Mrs. Aroloye noted that the University of Ilorin isa key player in the SIWES programme and called on theUniversity to play a more active role, suggesting ways theUniversity could improve the SIWES office and facilitiesneeded for the smooth operation of the Programme.

She thereafter presented the Vice-Chancellorwith a copy of the ITF/SIWES manual, which she saidwould help to improve the SIWES Unit and the quality ofgraduates produced by the University.

In his response, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor(RTI), Prof. Felix Oladele, who represented the Vice-Chancellor, stated that the University is committed toensuring adequate grooming of its prospective graduates,noting that adequate structures have been put in place toachieve that objective.

He noted further that partnering with the ITF is away the University can give all-round education to itsstudents, pleading with the ITF to come up withsuggestions on how to improve the University SIWES.He tasked ITF to ensure prompt payment of students'allowances.

New Registrar holds maiden meeting with staff(Contd. from front page)

“The major part of our system that can help uswill be our conscience, it is the conscience that is theattitude, if your conscience tells you this thing you aredoing is not right, it means it is not right. Let us commitourselves anew to the service of the system,” he added.

Speaking on the importance of office etiquette, Mr.Obafemi noted that as administrators and facilitators ofacademic activities, the Registry staff must not be seen ascogs in the wheel of progress of the University.

While urging the staff to exhibit some level ofoffice etiquette so that they can be appreciated, theRegistrar said they must learn to be refined, modest inspeech and conduct in the performance of their duties.

He said, “As Registry staff, you are representingthe Registrar in your office. You can only be my friend ifyou do the job you are doing on my behalf properly andcorrectly taking note of office etiquette and taking note ofyour attitude to the work that you are doing on my behalf;you can only be my friend if you help me to succeed. Ifyour performance is not for me to succeed, definitely youare not my friend. ”

The Registrar, who restated the commitment ofthe University management to staff training and re-training, urged them to shun truancy and lateness to workbut strive to make themselves relevant in their places ofwork.

Mr. Obafemi said, “Without us, the system cannotrun. Let us give our best so that this University will keeprunning. I am sure you know that it is because there is aUniversity that is why we are here. If there is noUniversity of Ilorin, only God knows where we would be.The University of Ilorin has brought us together, so let usjoin hands together to make the University of Ilorin togrow and in doing this I can assure you of happiness andcontentment.”

“My prayer is that as we start now to have a re-think of our attitude to make up our minds not to be a cogin the wheel of the progress of this system, and to make upour minds to work together as one big family, God willnot let the bond be broken by any external force in Jesusname,” he stressed.

The immediate past Registrar of the University ofIlorin, Mrs. Olufolake Oyeyemi, has beenformally declared the Grand Patroness of the

Postgraduate Students' Association (POGSASS) of theUniversity.

Speaking at the investiture ceremony held onThursday (April 25, 2013), the President of POGSASS,Mr. Abdullahi Adam, who described Mrs. Oyeyemi as“anAmazon within the University system”, said she waschosen as the Association's Grand Patroness “becauseshe is familiar with and understands the aspirations andneeds of theAssociation.”

In his remarks, the Dean of the PostgraduateSchool, Prof. Charles Bewaji, commended thepostgraduate students for their dynamism in putting theevent together.

Prof. Bewaji, who paid glowing tributes to Mrs.Oyeyemi, said that she set records not only in sports butin the University of Ilorin by being the first femaleRegistrar.

He said, “She has set the record for being aRegistrar for ten solid years, spending two terms inoffice. I have no doubt in my mind that POGSASS hasmade the right choice.”

Responding to the encomiums showered on her,Mrs. Oyeyemi, who attributed her attainments in life toGod, pledged her commitment to the development of theAssociation. While appreciating POGSASS forchoosing her as Grand Patroness, she tasked themembers on hard work, dedication and discipline asprerequisites for attaining excellence.

Faculty of CIS marks 5th anniversary

The Faculty of Communication and InformationSciences of the University of Ilorin will this weekcelebrate its five years of establishment.Addressing newsmen last Tuesday (April 30,

2013) in the Faculty Boardroom, the Dean, Prof. LenrieAina, said that the celebration will formally start onTuesday (May 7, 2013) with a campus road show by allstaff members and students of the Faculty, adding that thefinal match of the Dean’s Cup Football Competition hasalso been slated to take place the same day at theUniversity Stadium.

Other activities lined up for the celebration,according to Prof. Aina, include a cultural show at theICT Square and launching of the students' Associationcalendar on Wednesday (May 8, 2013). The grand finalecomes up on Thursday (May 9, 2013), with a lecture,launching of the Faculty Journal and an exhibition.

The Director-General of National InformationTechnology Development Agency (NITDA), Abuja,Prof. Cleopas Angaye, is expected to be the GuestSpeaker at the lecture themed “Information andCommunication Technology (ICT): The Hub to National

Dev elopement in the 21 Century.”

The event will be chaired by the Publisher ofNewspapers, Mr. Jimoh Ibrahim, while the

Minister of Communication Technology, Mrs. OmobolaJohnson, will be the Special Guest of Honour.

Other guests expected to grace the occasioninclude the Chief Executive Officer of the NigerianCommunication Commission (NCC), Abuja, Dr. EugeneIkemefuna Juwah; the wives of the Kwara and EkitiStates Governors, Mrs. Omolewa Ahmed and Mrs.Olabisi Fayemi, respectively. The Director, AfricanRegional Centre for Science, Prof. Muta Tiamiyu, willdeliver the keynote address.

On the rationale for the celebration, Prof. Ainasaid that the Faculty had made many remarkableachievements, stating that it has blazed the trail in manyareas in the University.

The Dean disclosed that the coursewaredevelopment which was aimed at moving the Universitytowards e-learning platform for course delivery wasspearheaded by the Faculty. “This has enhancedcommunication among members of staff in the Facultyvide the internet technology. The Faculty pioneered theuse of ICT at its meetings,” the Dean explained.st

The Kwara State Council of the Non-AcademicStaff Union of Educational and AssociatedInstitutions (NASU) has commended the Vice-

Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Prof.AbdulGaniyu Ambali, for his good and visionaryleadership.

The State Chairman of the Union, Mr. A. A.Bukoye, gave the commendation last Tuesday (April 30,2013) when he led members of the State ExecutiveCommittee on a courtesy call to the Vice-Chancellor.

Mr. Bukoye noted that within the few months ofProf. Ambali's assumption of office, he had positivelyimpacted on the life of members of the Universitycommunity.

Commending the Vice-Chancellor for promptlypromoting 90 members of staff within his few months inoffice, the Union leader said, “You have not let us downand you have proven that you are a good leader. Your fewmonths in office have been marvelous. We pray God tocontinue to sustain, strengthen, and keep you.”

Mr. Bukoye noted that the Union supported thecandidacy of Prof. Ambali when he was contesting forthe post, stressing that unionists are not terrorists butpartners in progress that help Chief Executives to achievetheir goals.

He stated further that NASU is a good anddisciplined Union and assured the Vice-Chancellor of theUnion's support.

In his response, the Vice-Chancellor thanked theUnion officials for the visit, saying that members of theUniversity management team also consider themselvesas comrades striving for the good of the system.

Prof. Ambali explained that the Managementoperates the philosophy of the Union, which is to beselfless and do things for the benefit of humanity, addingthat he will continue to do things that will make everyonecomfortable.

On staff promotion, the Vice-Chancellordisclosed that he would do everything that will“motivate, make happy, and promote productivityamong members of staff within the University's legalframe work.”

He promised that a bus would be added to thefleet conveying staff from the gate to the Main Campusand told the Union that security had been beefed up at theUniversity gate to protect their motor cycles.

“We are working for the same system and I amhere to serve the people and the system,” Prof. Ambalistated.

The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ilorin,Prof. AbdulGaniyu Ambali, has called on theFederal Government to make agriculture the

main stay of the Nigerian economy.Prof. Ambali made this call last Friday (April 26,

2013) through the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (RTI), Prof.Felix Oladele, when he received the National ExecutiveCouncil of the Farm ManagementAssociation of Nigeria(FAMAN) who visited him in his office.

The Vice-Chancellor recalled that agricultureused to be the main stay of the economy before thediscovery of oil and advised that the nation must go backto agriculture if the country is to be the food basket of thecontinent and also provide food for its people.

He explained that the University of Ilorin iscommitted to agriculture, adding that the Universityboasts of a very virile and strong Faculty of Agriculture.He also noted that the University planned to improve onits record in the area of agriculture by entering into

partnership with internal and external organizations suchas FAMAN.

The Vice-Chancellor thanked the Association for

choosing to have its upcoming 27 Conference at theUniversity of Ilorin.

In his remarks, the National President ofFAMAN, Prof. (Mrs.) Dicta Ogisi, thanked theUniversity of Ilorin for agreeing to host the Association's

27 Conference.She also commended the University for

operating a people-oriented and developmentaladministration, saying that the Association wasimpressed with the facilities on ground in the University.

Other members of the FAMAN NationalExecutive Council that accompanied the President on thevisit included: Dr. D. I.Agom, Vice President I; Dr. M. The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ilorin,Prof. AbdulGaniyu Ambali, has urged studentsin the country to be of good conduct and be

responsible youths, saying this would give the presentcrop of leaders confidence in them as leaders oftomorrow.

Prof. Ambali gave the charge last Tuesday (April30, 2013) when the national body of the NationalAssociation of Nigerian Students (NANS) paid him acourtesy call in his office.

The Vice-Chancellor said, “There is need for youto use conventional methods to achieve your aims andobjectivesd so that all parties can be comfortable.You arebeing assessed by the current leaders so that you can havea better future.”

While commending the students on the maturitydisplayed in pressing home their demands, the Vice-Chancellor encouraged them to always obey the laws oftheir respective institutions and be good citizens of thecountry.

Prof. Ambali pointed out that students of the

University of Ilorin are sellable commodities anywherethey go, saying that the University is always proud of itsproducts.

The Vice-Chancellor said, “The Universityprepares its students to face challenges and have modernand dynamic ways of doing things. After highereducation, the world would be looking up to the studentsand as such their manners and characters would be leftwith them.”

Prof. Ambali explained that the University of Ilorinseeks to ensure that its graduates become employers oflabour and not job seekers.

Earlier in his remarks, NANS's Deputy SenatePresident, who led the students' delegation on the visit,Mr. John Shima, said the body is committed to fightingthe anti-people and pro-rich educational policies of thefederal and state governments which, he said, areadversely affecting the Nigerian students.

He said that NANS would continually campaignfor free, functional and qualitative educational system, aswell as a conducive and enabling academic environment.

The 131 Inaugural Lecture of the University of Ilorin holds this Thursday (May 9, 2013) at the UniversityAuditorium, beginning from 5.00 p.m. prompt.

The lecturer is Prof. Sunday Harrison Umoh of the Department of Counsellor Education, Faculty ofEducation. The title of the lecture, which holds under the Chairmanship of the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. AbdulGaniyuAmbali, is “MayYour Rough Road Be Smooth.”

Members of the University community and the larger public are cordially invited.

The Head, Department of Public Affairs, AhmaduBello University (ABU), Zaria, Dr. Ismaila Shehu,has commended the Directorate of Corporate

Affairs of the University of Ilorin for what he described as“the wonderful job the Directorate is doing in ensuring theconstant visibility of Unilorin in both the print andelectronic media in the country”.

Dr. Shehu, who made the commendation whilebriefing the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ilorinduring a courtesy call on him in his office penultimateWednesday (April 23, 2013), said he was enthralled by “thewidely acknowledged achievements and innovations in theUnilorin's Directorate of Corporate Affairs and that waswhy we in the Public Affairs Department of Ahmadu BelloUniversity, Zaria, decided to pay you a courtesy visit tofamiliarise ourselves with your operations, share ideas, andpossibly learn from your records of achievements.”

He stressed that ABU would love to develop itsown Public Affairs Unit, adding that he had no problemsecuring the consent of his Vice-Chancellor, Prof.

Abdullahi Mustapha, to travel down to the University ofIlorin to understudy its CorporateAffairs Directorate.

In his response, the Vice-Chancellor of theUniversity of Ilorin, Prof. AbdulGaniyu Ambali, who wasrepresented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (RTI), Prof.Felix Oladele, thanked ABU for choosing to visit theUniversity as a case study, pointing out that the Universitymanagement is committed to the development of a robustDirectorate of CorporateAffairs.

Noting that the visit by the ABU team is mutuallybeneficial to the two institutions, the Vice-Chancellor said,“We gain a lot from interaction. We hope to gain from youas you also gain from us. We place premium on informationbecause we want our students to be well informed to manthe economy of the nation.”

With Dr. Shehu on the two-day visit was Alhaji A.Adamu, his assistant.

The administrative staff of the University of Ilorinhave showered encomiums on the immediate pastRegistrar, Mrs. Olufolake Oyeyemi, at a send off

programme organised in her honour penultimate Friday(April 26, 2013) at the University Dam site.

The occasion, attended by many dignitariesincluding the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (RTI), Prof. FelixOladele, who represented the Vice-Chancellor, Prof.AbdulGaniyu Ambali; and the Deputy Vice-Chancellor(Academic), Prof. Bayo Lawal, was also used to formallywelcome the new Registrar, Mr. Emmanuel Dada Obafemi.

In his message, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ambali,commended the role played by Mrs. Oyeyemi in raising thestandard and moving the University to greater heights.

On his part, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor(Academic), Prof. Bayo Lawal, said Mrs. Oyeyemi's tenureas Registrar is a watershed having served the University forone full decade.

Referring to her as “my wife”, whom he “welcomedback home”, being married to a fellow Offa indigene, Prof.Lawal commended the elegant penmanship of the formerRegistrar, saying, “Not only has she served creditably andcommendably, she has also been able to hand over thebaton to a worthy successor.”

In his tribute, the Chairman of the Non-AcademicStaff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions(NASU), Mr. J. J. Bello, recalled the former Registrar'srole in advancing the interests of members of the juniorstaff cadre..”

Mr. Bello then pledged the support and cooperationof the union for the new Registrar, Mr. Obafemi.

Also paying tribute, the Chairman of the SeniorStaff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), Mr.Alfanla, pointed out that one of the high points of Mrs.Oyeyemi's tenure is her penchant for sharing ideas to movethe University forward, saying, “Whether we like it or not,during her tenure, the Registry and the University in itsentirety witnessed a great transformation and I equallybelieve that the incoming Registrar will consolidate onwhat we have on ground.”

Responding, Mrs. Oyeyemi, who was emotionallyoverwhelmed by the torrents of tributes, acknowledged therole of her mentor and foundation Registrar of theUniversity, late Mr. Olu Daramola, whose wife, Ibidunni,was present at the ceremony.

She thanked the organisers of the send-offceremony for recognising her modest contributions to theUniversity, saying, “I am happy today because you havemade me proud and to stand tall. You are the ones that mademe what I am today. You tax yourselves to do somethinglike this, God will bless you. I reached the pinnacle of mycareer; you will also reach yours.”

While calling on the new Registrar, Mr. Obafemi,to take advantage of his qualities as “a widely admired andaccepted grassroots man among members of staff”, Mrs.Oyeyemi urged the staff to pray for her successor as hetakes over from her.

The final phase of the competition holds between the Department of Linguistics and Nigerian Languages and the

Towards Ilorinising Nigeria

This month, history will be made again as the University

of Ilorin spotlights the historic city of Ilorin as a

paradigm for what is urgently needed in Nigeria: peace.

This spotlighting is coming through the first national

conference of the Centre for Ilorin Studies. The Centre, I

understand, has been working round the clock to make the

conference a reference point in the annals of the University.

From all indications, making Ilorin the cynosure of all

eyes, academic and otherwise, is a compelling desideratum as

the city is both like and unlike Nigeria of today. Like Nigeria,

Ilorin is a melting pot of diverse cultural and linguistic

traditions. Unlike Nigeria, Ilorin is a bastion of peace and

harmony where diversity has been converted to the beauty that

is usually associated with a rainbow.

With the security challenges facing the country today,

it is pertinent for all Nigerians to pause and cast their looks at

Ilorin and their various cities and communities. What

this means is that despite differences as the case is here, Nigeria

can still be a peaceful and harmonious country with more

efforts on the part of the leaders, who have obviously not been

doing enough to stem the tide of violence ravaging the nation.

By drawing our attention to “Ilorin: History, Culture

and Lessons of Peaceful Co-existence” between the 26 and

29 of this month, the Centre for Ilorin Studies is blazing the

trail in directing our attention to issues that appertain to our

survival as a nation. Nigeria certainly needs to understand and

appreciate her history, promote and nurture her cultures and

draw appropriate lessons from the peaceful co-existence that

characterises the capital city of Ilorin.

By conceiving such a timely and relevant conference,

the Centre for Ilorin Studies under the pioneering leadership of

Prof. A.G.A.S. Oladosu deserves a pat on the back for

thematising issues of national significance from the standpoint

of its mandate and setting agenda for other Centres in the

University. One recalls that the Centre has become a beehive of

activities of late: apart from collaborating with the Faculty of

Arts to organise the International Conference on the Life and

Works of Shaykh Adam Abdullahi Al-Ilory (1917 – 1992) in

August 2012, which resulted in the publication of a book of

over 1,200 pages in two volumes, one of the biggest books

anywhere, the Centre also organised a successful public lecture

in December 2012.

As the University of Ilorin awaits the arrival of

scholars from all walks of life who will be drawing from their

various academic backgrounds to espouse and analyse crucial

issues of national importance, it is pertinent to emphasise the

need to always be conscious of history in whatever we do while

remaining cultured and peaceful.

It is also important for the entire members of the

University community and the larger public to participate in the

programme especially the opening ceremony coming up on

May 27. This is because as the words of the elders are words of

wisdom, the participants will be tapping from the judicial and

academic wisdom of two accomplished octogenarians and

statesmen and a world renowned peace scholar.

In other words, while the pioneer Chairman of the

Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences

Commission (ICPC), Hon. Justice Mustapha Akanbi (rtd.),

who is the keynote address presenter, will be speaking on the

conference theme, “Ilorin: History, Culture and Lessons of

Peaceful Co-existence”, the retired Professor of the University

of Ibadan and Executive Secretary of the Muslim Ummah of

South-Western Nigeria (MUSWEN), Prof. Dawud Noibi, will

be making a lead presentation on “Ethno-religious Plurality

and harmonious Co-existence in Nigeria: the Ilorin Lessons”.

Also on hand to make another lead presentation during

the conference on “Rethinking Peaceful Co-existence in a

Multicultural Setting” is the pioneer Director of the Centre for

Peace and Strategic Studies, University of Ilorin and Director

of the Institute of African Studies, University of Ibadan, Prof.

Isaac Albert, apart from other leading intellectual lights who

have been slated to address various sessions of the conference.

As there can be no development without peace,

looking for models outside the Nigerian borders may be

counter-productive because there are institutions and

paradigms here that can inspire and galvanise Nigeria to glory.

And, when it comes to peaceful co-existence in diversity, the

most significant need of the world at large and Nigeria in

particular today, there are few places that can compete with

Ilorin. It is time to Nigeria and make her an abode of

peace for all!
