The 2012-13 season represents Cory Schwartz’s 31st year coaching with the Nordic program and 26th year as the ski coordina-tor at UNH. During his tenure, Schwartz has led the Wildcats to 23 top-10 NCAA finishes, including back-to-back seventh place finishes (‘84 & ‘85) within his first three years at the University and a 10th place tally in 2012. From 1989-96, Schwartz’s teams claimed eight consecutive top-10 NCAA finishes, the most in school history. Schwartz has mentored 29 student-athletes to a total of 39 All-America team selections. Included in that number are 17 Nordic ski-

ers compiling 11 All-America team honors. In 2012, Nordic team skier Liz Guiney earned EISA All-East honors, and she qual-ified for the NCAAs along with Elizabeth Izzo, Tristan Ramey and Erik Lindgren. The ski program merited a No. 10 national ranking, which was the highest among all UNH teams, in the final winter Division I Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup Standings. Schwartz was named EISA Coach of the Year in 1985, ‘86, 2002 and ’03 and was awarded the Al Merrill Award by the state of New Hampshire in 1998. During his collegiate career at UNH, Schwartz competed in the NCAA Champion-ships three times before graduating in 1982. The Center Conway, N.H., native had his top performance during his junior season when he placed 10th in the NCAAs. He began coach-ing the men’s squad in a post-graduate year and, the following season, took over the duties for the women’s team.

Brian Blank, a 1995 UNH graduate, is in his sixth season as UNH alpine head coach. He lettered on the UNH ski team from 1991-95 and served as team captain during his senior season The 2012 season featured a third-place finish at the EISAs and a full allotment of six alpine racers competing at the NCAAs. Four other skiers qualified but did not compete due to the three-skier limit per discipline. Paul Atkinson and Marie-Elaine Lepine were named to the EISA All-East Team. In 2011, Blank mentored a pair of All-Americans in Zach Clayton and Sam Coffey, helping the Wildcats post an eighth-place finish at

the NCAAs, the school’s best showing in 11 years. Atkinson was named to the All-East First Team. In 2009, Blank was named EISA Alpine Coach of the Year. During that season, the alpine team earned eight All-America honors. The alpine team was the top scoring team in the east and the second-highest scoring team at the NCAA Championships. Through the regular season, the men’s alpine team won 11 of 12 events. From 2001-2006, Blank coached at Stratton Mountain School. While at SMS, Blank served as the men’s FIS coach. Prior to that position, coach Blank worked at Rowmark Ski Academy (1998-2000) in Salt Lake City, Utah and with the Brighton Ski Team (1995-98).

The 2012-13 academic year marks the 13th season Marty Scarano has served as the Director of Athletics at the University of New Hampshire. During his tenure, Scarano has heightened national exposure for UNH athletics with academics, facility renovations and programmatic advancement being top priorities. His many accomplishments played a key role in UNH being named one of the Top 20 Athletic Departments in the Country in U.S. News and World Report college athletics rankings. With a Graduation Success Rate (GSR) of 89 percent among its student-athletes in 2011-12, UNH ranked third in the America East Conference and fourth in the Colonial Athletic Associa-tion. The men’s soccer, women’s cross country/track, gymnastics, women’s ski, and volleyball teams all posted perfect 100 percent GSRs while five additional programs tallied scores of 90

or above. The NCAA honored four Wildcat teams for multi-year Academic Progress Rates (APRs) in the top 10 percent of all teams in its respective sports. The Wildcat men’s ice hockey team and gymnastics both recorded perfect APRs of 1,000, while the men’s outdoor track & field team tallied 997 points and women’s indoor track & field notched 995. In 2007, Scarano was named the All-American Football Foundation Athletic Director of the Year for FCS football in the Northeast region. Scarano was also awarded the National Association of College Directors of Athletics (NACDA) AD of the Year for the FCS. Scarano has also been an active member in the leadership of UNH’s three major conferences and was the chair of the executive committees for Atlantic 10 football, Hockey East and America East from 2003 to 2007. He also served as chair of the NCAA Division I Men’s Ice Hockey Committee in 2005-06 and 2006-07 and is currently on the America East Executive Council. Most recently, Scarano was a member of the Hockey East Restructuring team that successfully recruited Notre Dame and the University of Connecticut to the conference. Outside of athletics, Scarano is in his 10th year on the Board of Corporators at Canterbury Shaker Village, a non-profit museum located in Canterbury, N.H. Before arriving at UNH, Scarano held the position of Athletics Director at Colorado College from July 1996 through June 2000. During his tenure, Colorado College was ranked among the top 20 Division III programs in the Sears Cup national standings and produced several All-Americans, all-academic award winners and NCAA post-graduate scholarship recipients. Prior to his stay in Colorado Springs, Scarano worked for 13 years at Colgate University, where he served as assistant director of athletics, director of physical education, associate director, and senior associate director. Scarano, a native of Pittsburgh, Pa., is a 1978 graduate of Penn State University, where he started his athletic career as assistant ticket manager and the athletics events manager from 1980-83. Scarano holds a Master’s Degree in Environmental History from Colgate. He and his wife, Cydney, have three children, Lyndon, Kyle, a sophomore at UNH, and Corey.

Mark W. Huddleston became the 19th president of the University of New Hampshire in July 2007, bringing three decades of experience in public and private education as a fac-ulty member, dean, and senior administrator. Huddleston has been a strong advocate for increasing affordability and accessibility in higher education, and has argued that we need to rethink much of what we do to protect our core missions, and to ensure that higher education remains vital and financially sus-tainable in the 21st century. In February 2010, he presented a 10-year strategic plan for UNH, the result of an in-tensive collaboration between faculty, students, staff, alumni, and the University’s wider communities. Emphasizing innovation and entrepreneurship, the plan is helping to guide

the University’s response to a historic state budget cut passed by the 2011 New Hampshire Legislature. Huddleston was raised in Syracuse, N.Y., and was the first member of his family ever to attend college. He earned his bachelor’s degree in political science from the State University of New York-Buffalo, and both a master’s degree and Ph.D. in political science from the University of Wisconsin–Madison. He began his academic career at SUNY-Buffalo in 1977 as an assistant professor of political science. In 1980, he joined the faculty of the University of Delaware, where he served for the next 24 years. There, he chaired the Department of Political Science and International Relations and served as associate provost for in-ternational programs. In 2001, he was named dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, overseeing 45 academic departments and centers with nearly 900 full-time faculty and staff, and serving in that capacity until he was named president of Ohio Wesleyan University in 2004. An author of numerous books and articles, he has been a consultant for both the U.S. government and interna-tional organizations. He also served as an adviser in Bosnia on rebuilding financial and administrative infrastructures after the Dayton accords. Huddleston is chair of the Presidents Council of the America East Conference, an incorporator of the New Hampshire Charitable Foundation, and a member of the Board of Trustees of the Speedway Children’s Charities. Huddleston and his wife, Emma Bricker, have three children, Andy, Kate, and Giles.

Steve Metcalf is in his 16th year at UNH, having served the athletic department in a number of differ-ent capacities over the years. As the Deputy Athletic Director, he over-

sees all internal operations, as well as the women’s ice hockey, men’s soccer, field hockey, women’s lacrosse, men’s and women’s skiing, men’s and women’s cross country and men’s and women’s indoor and outdoor track & field programs, and the areas of strength & conditioning and sports medicine. Additional duties in-clude a role as Marty Scarano’s designate for all league affiliations and NCAA Championships, as well as in the daily operation of the department. UNH has served as the host for numerous NCAA championships in men’s and women’s ice hockey, gym-nastics and skiing, including two Women’s Ice Hockey National Championships and the NCAA Skiing Nation-al Championship. At the conference level, Metcalf serves on the Amer-ica East Championship Committee and recently com-pleted a two-year term as chair. He currently serves as the chair of the NCAA National Collegiate Ski commit-tee and previously was a member of the NCAA Wom-en’s Ice Hockey Committee with three years service as the chair.

John Ciani is in his 11th year with the University of New Hamp-shire athletic department. After four years as an assistant coach in the University’s strength and condition-

ing office, Ciani was promoted to the position of Asso-ciate Director of Strength and Conditioning in 2006. Ciani’s efforts have been key in guiding UNH stu-dent-athletes to NCAA appearances in both women’s and men’s ice hockey, football, gymnastics, women’s volleyball, women’s lacrosse, skiing and track & field. Ciani came to UNH from the University of North Da-kota, where he worked under Paul Chapman, the Wild-cats’ current director of strength and conditioning, as an assistant with the men’s ice hockey, football, men’s and women’s swimming, men’s basketball and baseball teams. Ciani is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Spe-cialist through the National Strength and Conditioning Association and Certified Level 1 Coach through USA-Weightlifting. He is completing his Master’s Degree in Exercise Physiology. After graduating from Escondido High School, Ciani went on to Long Beach State University, where he earned his B.A. in Psychology in 2000.

Athletic excellence is part of the formula for success in the collegiate experience for University of New Hampshire ski team. The primary measure of achievement is the stu-

dent-athlete’s success in the classroom. New Hampshire also has one of the top graduation rates in the country for student-athletes. UNH is dedicated to enhancing the student-athlete’s ability to achieve academic excellence. Realizing the time commitment the athletes give to the school, the University administers a comprehensive program of ac-ademic support services that is available to Wildcat ski-ers and all other student-athletes. This program includes the monitoring of academic progress and providing tu-torial services, as well as interacting with the academic advisors within the various colleges. Serving as Assistant Athletic Director for Academic Services since 1994 is Joanne Maldari, a 1990 gradu-ate of Holy Cross who went on the earn her master’s degree in Athletic Counseling at Springfield College. She was recognized for her outstanding efforts at UNH by receiving the University’s 2001 Academic Advising Award. Before coming to Durham, Maldari served ath-letic counseling internships at Springfield and Central Connecticut State University.
