SeanMcDonnellbeginshis11thseasonastheheadcoachoftheUniversityofNewHampshirefootballprogramwithanimpressive70-49-0recordafterleadingthe2008WildcatstoUNH’sfifthconsecutiveappearanceintheNCAAFCSChampionshipsandfourthappearance intheNCAAquarterfinalsduringthatsametimespan.Overthe lastfiveseasons,McDonnellhasledhisteamtogreatsuccess,postinganamazing47-17overallrecord.Histeamenters2009rankedashighasNo.6insomenationalpolls. McDonnellhasreturnedUNHfootballtotheupperechelonoftheFCSandhasrecruitedseveralAll-AmericansandNFL-caliberplayers,includingthelikesofWalterPaytonAward-winningQBRickySantosandtheall-timeNCAAFCSrecordholderforTDcatchesinWRDavidBall,whosurpassedJerryRice’scollegemarkof51TDswithhis58.BallhasspenttimewiththeJetsandBearsoftheNFL. Inhisrookiedebut,McDonnellledtheWildcatstoa5-6overallrecordandimpressivevictoriesoverthelikesofNorth-eastern(33-31),Connecticut(43-18)andMaine(31-20).UnderMcDonnellandhisstaff,theWildcatsfeaturedacraftyandwideopenoffensiveattackthatledtheAtlantic10withanaverageof457.3yardspergame. SeanMcGowanentershisthirdseasonasthedefensivecoordinator,hissixthasanassistantcoach,andreturnstocoachingthedefensivebacks,whichhehandleduntil2006forthe‘Cats.Lastseasonwashissecondasmentorofthelinebackers.McGowan,

was instrumental in helping theWildcat defense to lead the nation infumblerecoveries,interceptionsandturnovermarginin2005.McGowanalsowasmentortoJeffPammer,whoearnedAll-Americahonors.McGowanalsoworkedcloselywithBuckBuchananAwardcandidateCoreyGraham,whowasdraftedinthefifthroundoftheNFLdraftin2007bytheChicagoBearsandcouldbeastarterthisseason.McGowan,althoughhedidn’thavetheofficialtitle,servedinadefensivecoordinatorcapacityin2006underheadcoachSeanMcDonnell.McGowanarrivedinDurhamafterworkingattheUniversityofNewHavenbeforetheschooldiscontinuedthefootballprogram.PriortoworkingatNewHaven,McGowanspentthe2003seasonas thedefensivecoordinatoratWestVirginiaTech.McGowanbeganhiscoachingcareeratDivisionIIIOccidentalCollege,whereheservedasthequarterbackscoach.HethenmovedontotheUniversityofPittsburghasagraduateassistantforthreeseasons.McGowanspenthisfirstseasoninrecruitingbeforemovingtodefense,whereheworkedwiththesecondary.McGowanthentookoverasdefensivecoordinatoratDuquesneUniversity,wherethedefensefinishedrankedfirstintotaldefenseinI-AA.Hewasatwo-yearletterwinnerashestartedoutasquarterbackbeforemovingtosafetyhisfinaltwoseasons.HereceivedhisbusinessdegreefromFordhamin1998.

JOE CONLINAssistant Coach/Offensive LinePittsburgh ‘02 JoeConlinentershissixthseasonasanassistantcoachandhisfirstcoachingtheoffensiveline.Hewas promoted to full-time status for 2008. Conlin,who mentored the defensive line for four years,workedwithDerekStank,whodevelopedintoone

Lastseason,theWildcatsledtheCAAinbothyardspergame(406.9ypg)–includingaleague-high621totaloffensiveyardsvs.UMass–andred-zoneefficiency(90%;45of50with32TDsand13FG). UNHscored30+pointsinnineof13games,includingaseason-high51pointsagainstRhodeIsland,toranksecondintheleagueinscoringat35.6pointspergame. UNH could be that potent again in 2009 with the return ofquarterback R.J.Toman, tight end Scott Sicko and running backChadKackert. Defensively,the‘Catsrankedsixthintheleagueinpointspergame.TheywerestoutagainsttherunwithaNo.4ranking,andthatrun-stoppingabilitywasthebackboneofthesecond-rankedred-zonedefense. ThedefensivelineofJordanLong,KevinPeters,SteveYoungandCAARookieoftheYearBrianMcNallyreturnsintact,andfourotherstartersreturnonthedefensivesideoftheball. Thecombinationofadefensethatcreatedturnoversandanoffensethatdidn’tfallpreytothemledNewHampshiretoasecond-bestmarkof+14inturnovermarginandaformulaforsuccess.

QUARTERBACK: TheWildcatshavefourquarterbacksontheroster,butjuniorR.J.Toman(MissionViejo,Calif.)istheonlysignalcallerwhohasseengameaction.Tomanrankedsecondintheleagueinbothpassingyards(239.2pergame)andpassefficiency(156.2)in2008toearnCAASecondTeamrecognition. Tomancompleted65.1percentofhispassattempts(231of355)for3,110yardsand28touchdowns.TheyardageranksfourthonUNH’slistofsingle-seasonsuperlativesandonlyhispredecessor,RickySantos,isaheadofTomanonthatlist.His231completionsareNo.8ontheprogram’ssingle-seasonlistandthe355attemptsareninth. Toman’sseasonhighlightsincludedapairof300-yardpassinggames(309atRhodeIsland;305vs.William&Mary)aswellasa295-yard,four-TDperformanceagainstUMassinwhichheaveraged16.4yardsperattemptand29.5yardspercompletion,bothofwhichrankedsecondintheleaguefor2008single-gameefforts. Inadditiontotheaerialattack,Tomancarriedtheball106times–secondmostontheteam–for214yardsandsixtouchdowns,whichtiedforsecondamongallWildcats.Inthatbattlevs.UMass,Tomanrushedfivetimesfor61yardsandonescore. RedshirtfreshmanMattWelch(Lowell,Mass.)isprojectedasthebackupQB.ClassmateJoshVick(Appolo,Pa.)andjuniorMikeRoberto(Rumsin,N.H.)willbecompetingforthatspot.

RUNNING BACK:SeniorChadKackert(SimiValley,Calif.)isaversa-tileweaponoutofthebackfield.Despitemissingfourgamesin‘08,Kackertrankedsecondontheteamincarries(99),rushingyards(630)andrushingtouchdowns(six). Andwithhisexplosivespeed,Kackertledtheteamat6.4yardspercarry.His72-yardrunatRhodeIslandwasthesecond-longest

intheCAAlastyear.Kackertfinishedthatgamewith310all-pur-poseyards,whichalsorankedsecondintheleague.Hefinishedtheseasonwithapairof100-yardrushinggames–164atURIand106vs.Albany. Kackertalsostretchesdefenseswithhispassreceivingskills.Hetallied15catchesfor176yards–an11.7averagepercatch–andtwotouchdowns. Whenyouaddhis441kickoffreturnyards,Kackertamassedatotalof1,247all-purposeyardstoaverageateam-high138.6yardspergame. WIDE RECEIVER: UNH will have a new leading receiver for thefourthconsecutiveyearin2009followingthegraduationofMikeBoyle(67catches;1,116yards;10TD). SeniorTravis Negron (San Diego, Calif.) is the top returningwidereceiver. Sickorecorded50catchesfor660yardsandseventouchdownstoranksecondontheteaminallthreestatistics.Hewasseventhintheleagueinreceivingyards/gameat55.0.Withthose660receiv-ingyards,Sickorankedfifthontheteaminall-purposeyardsandaverageyardspergame. Sophomore Chris Jeannot (MoonTownship, Pa.) and juniorKamalMohamed(SanDiego,Calif.)alsobringexperienceattightend.Jeannotcaughtjustfivepassesinninegames,butatateam-high27.4yardspercatchhetotaled137receivingyards.His46yards/catch(2-92)againstUMasswasthesecond-highestaverageintheCAAayearago.Mohamedalsoplayedinninegamesandhadonecatch(twoyards).

OFFENSIVE LINE: NewHampshirewillhaveatotallyrevampedof-fensivelinein‘09afterlosingfourmemberstograduation.SeniorcenterTomNeill(Syracuse,N.Y.;6-foot-4,285pounds)istheleaderofthisyear’sgroupthatwillbattleinthetrenches,asheistheonlyreturningstarterontheO-line. Classmate Dan Larkin (Rochelle Park, N.J.; 6-4, 300) also hasconsiderableexperienceandistheprojectedstarteratrightguard.SethPrice(GroveCity,Ohio;6-6,280),ajunior,isaconvertedtightendandhasthestartingnodatlefttackle. Beyondthoseseniors,theoffensivelinehasyoungtalent.

Sophomores Jayson Elmore (Hershey, Pa.; 6-3, 260) and GeorgePecoraro(Cresskill,N.J.;6-4,270)endedthe2008seasonsecondonthedepthchart,andthroughtheyeartheysawgameactionthatwillpreparethemforthisyear’sstartingrole. Elmore will line up alongside Larkin on the right side whilePecorarowillflankNeilltotheleft.
