New Hampshire Innovation Research Center (NHIRC) The NHIRC is an economic development grant, created by the New Hampshire Legislature, to increase innovation, technology development, and collaboration between New Hampshire businesses and universities. Businesses match the project awards to fund research, which often leads to new products and processes. The NHIRC also provides SBIR/STTR proposal writing workshops.

Research Institutes and CentersThese are just a few of UNH’s world-renowned research institutes and centers.

Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping/Joint Hydrographic Center (CCOM/JHC)CCOM/JHC develops tools to advance ocean mapping and hydrography, and trains the next generation of hydrographers and ocean mappers. CCOM/JHC has 19 teaching and research faculty and an additional research staff whose expertise ranges from marine acoustics and deep sea photo and video mosaicking to 4D data visualization.

Hubbard Center for Genome Studies (HCGS)HCGS conducts research in comparative and environmental genomics, linking genomics to organisms and the environment; and provides technical assistance and services in high-throughput DNA sequencing, fragment analysis, and analysis of gene expression. HCGS specializes in new users and small projects that need intensive management and offers a complete pipeline of support from project design to data analysis.

RESEARCH, COMMERCIALIZATION, AND EXPERTISE Institute for the Study of Earth, Oceans, and Space (EOS)EOS is UNH’s largest research enterprise, receiving over $41 million a year in research support from NASA, NOAA, NSF, and other federal agencies. EOS is among the top-ranked U.S. university centers in NASA funding and is a NASA “Center of Excellence” in solar-terrestrial theory.

EOS research centers include:• Earth Systems Research Center• School of Marine Science and Ocean Engineering• Ocean Process Analysis Laboratory• Space Science Center

Center for Fluid Physics (CFP)CFP is a collaborative cross-disciplinary group of fluid dynamics researchers employing analytical, modeling, and experimental studies to develop a fundamental understanding of the processes underlying complex fluid dynamical problems.

Rosenberg International Franchise CenterThe Rosenberg International Franchise Center aims to explore and advance the understanding of franchising. The center interacts with industry experts and produces timely and meaningful research reports and forecasts. It is widely recognized as the first center established to study the economic impact of the multi billion-dollar international franchise industry.

Center for Advanced Materials and Manufacturing Innovation (CAMMI)CAMMI is dedicated to developing the next generation of advanced materials and manufacturing innovations through fundamental and applied research and development efforts. CAMMI collaborates with local, national, and international companies to enable innovations through research projects and shared facilities.

University Instrumentation Center (UIC)The UIC offers direct and easy access to state-of-the-art instruments available for external use and offers the following quality services:• Repair and maintenance of electronic and mechanical scientific equipment• Consultation on engineering procedures and new/used instrument purchases• Calibration of pipettes, balance, and temperature equipment using NIST standards

Research Computing Center (RCC)The RCC offers services that include software development solutions for the web, desktop, and mobile devices; data management and support; and a newly renovated 2,000 square foot data center.

Commercialization Center Rent offices in the new UNH commercialization center, a 32,000 square foot space equipped with gigabit Ethernet connectivity and access to a 3D printer.

UNH InterOperability Lab (UNH-IOL)The UNH-IOL tests networking and data communications products and is one of the industry’s premier independent proving grounds for new technologies. The UNH-IOL houses a multi-million dollar array of test equipment and the latest devices from member companies.

Magnetosphere-Ionosphere Research Lab (MIRL) The MIRL at the Institute for the Study of Earth, Oceans, and Space contributes to a variety of research projects in space physics. The lab focuses on the development of instrumentation for ground-based, rocket-based, and satellite observations of space physics phenomena and analysis of the resulting observations.

Flow Physics Wind Tunnel Facility The wind tunnel, measuring 73 meters in length, has applications in the fields of aerodynamics, atmospheric, and marine research in both the military and civilian scientific communities. It is the largest scientific quality boundary-layer wind tunnel facility in the world.

Genome Sequencer The Hubbard Center for Genome Studies houses a state-of-the-art Illumina HiSeq 2500 genome sequencer, the only one of its kind in New Hampshire. Services are available for external clients.

Cray Supercomputer UNH is home to a Cray XE6m supercomputer, which is roughly 1,000 times more powerful than a typical desktop computer. It is the only Cray supercomputer in the state of New Hampshire.

Ocean Engineering Tank The 60 x 40 x 20 foot deep water tank is the only one of its kind on the East Coast, and is used for a variety of experiments where simulating unobstructed, open water environments is required.

Wave Tank The wave/tow tank at UNH is approximately 120’ long, 12’ wide and 8’ deep. It provides a 90’ length in which test bodies can be towed, subjected to wave action, or both.

Facilities and VenuesUNH has many large and versatile meeting spaces and venues, as well as a variety of recreation facilities including sports fields, swimming pools, and tennis courts available for external rental.

Here are just a few of the other UNH instruments, labs, and facilities available for external use:• Inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometer • High resolution inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometers • Deep ultraviolet lasers• Servohydraulic testing machines• Tube hydroforming facility• Sheet hydroforming/bulge testing machine• Electromagnetic forming and welding machine• Digital image correlation and infrared camera• Thermal-vacuum chamber (simulates space conditions)• Class 10,000 clean lab for the preparation of samples for trace elemental

or isotopic analysis for applications in Earth and environmental sciences• Machine shop for creating prototypes

Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) The SEM produces high resolution, three-dimensional images of a sample’s surface topography. Scanning with a focused beam of electrons in a vacuum, this microscope is capable of imaging both materials and biological samples. UNH’s SEM is one of the only instruments of its kind available for external use in New England outside of Boston.

UNH offers a variety of business support services. From faculty expertise in many fields to small business educational programs, UNH has the resources to help your organization grow and thrive.

Peter T. Paul Entrepreneurship Center The Entrepreneurship Center’s goal is to be the premier resource supporting entrepreneurship in the state, resulting in increased business formation, investment capital, and job creation in New Hampshire.

Speakers Bureau The UNH Speakers Bureau is an outreach service made possible by volunteer speakers from among UNH faculty and staff who teach, conduct research, study, and work at UNH. Our speakers have enthusiasm for sharing their expertise and extending our learning community to every corner of New Hampshire.

The New Hampshire Small Business Development Center (NH SBDC) The NH SBDC is an outreach program of UNH’s Peter T. Paul College of Business and Economics; it is a cooperative venture of the U.S. Small Business Administration and New Hampshire’s Department of Resources and Economic Development. The NH SBDC provides business advising and educational programing to small businesses across New Hampshire.

UNH Cooperative Extension The UNH Cooperative Extension works with over 3,600 businesses a year, bringing information and education into the communities of the Granite State. Assistance in community and economic development, food and agriculture, and natural resources are available to New Hampshire individuals, businesses, and communities.

UNH Center for Family Business The UNH Center for Family Business offers services and information to entrepreneurial families and aims to make and keep family businesses successful. Membership is available to family businesses, large and small.
