www.UNHWildcats.comSEASON OUTLOOKExpectations.are.once.again.high.in.Durham.as.the.volleyball.team.prepares.for.the.2010.season..The.Wildcats.finished.last.season.as.the.hottest.team.in.America.East.winning.five.of.the.final.six.regular-season.matches..New.Hampshire.moved.from.outside.playoff.contention.to.the.second.over.the.final.weeks.of.the.regular.season.

UNH.returns.nine.letterwinners.and.four.starters.from.the.2009.roster..Head.coach.Jill Hirschinger,.who.en-ters.her.15th.season.at.UNH,.has.added.four.newcomers.to.an.already.deep.roster..While.New.Hampshire.said.farewell.to.a.trio.of.Wildcats.that.helped.rewrite.the.record.books.in.Kirsten.Bates,.Lindsay.Fogarty.and.Kate.Uitti;.the.core.pieces.are.back.for.another.run.at.an.America.East.title.and.a.trip.to.the.NCAAs..Outside Hitters/Right-Side Hitters:.Junior.Lauren Laquerre.(Concord,.N.H.).will.be.called.upon.to.lead.an.emerging.crop.of.young.pin.hitters..Laquerre.was.fourth.on.the.team.in.kills.a.year.ago.and.was.one.of.New.Hampshire’s.most.reliable.attackers..Joining.Laquerre.are.classmates.Taylor Dressing.(Gillette,.N.J.).and.Amy Keding.(Northbrook,.Ill.)..Dressing.was.evolving.into.one.of.UNH’s.top.outside.hitters.in.2009.until.she.was.sidelined.with.a.knee.injury..The.Wildcats.are.optimistic.that.she.can.pick.up.right.where.she.left.off..Filling.in.for.Dressing.was.Keding;.the.junior.outside.hitter.was.a.mainstay.in.the.Wildcat.lineup.down.the.stretch.when.the.team.caught.fire..The.team.won.five.of.the.final.six.matches.of.the.regular.season.with.Keding.playing.in.all.six.matches..The.‘Cats.balance.experience.with.youth.by.adding.three.freshmen.pin.hitters:.righty.Leah Thomas.(Rochester,.N.H.),.lefties.Destiny Tolliver.(Rochester,.Mich.).and.Morgan Thatcher.(Brockton,.Mass.)..

Middle Blockers:.Senior.tri-captain.Justine Elliott.(Mitchellville,.Md.).anchors.a.crop.of.young.middle.block-ers.for.New.Hampshire..Elliott,.who.was.the.2009.Ed.Jentes.Coaches’.Award.recipient,.started.a.team-high.99.sets.and.tallied.a.team-best.73.blocks..Elliott.is.on.pace.to.move.into.the.top.ten.all-time.in.blocks.at.UNH.and.could.make.a.run.at.cracking.the.top.five. in.program.history..Elliott’s.experience. is.complemented.by.redshirt.sophomore Jessy Dick.(Lethbridge,.Alberta).and.incoming.freshman.Kaja Schirmer.(Pittsford,.N.Y.)..Dick.saw.increased.role.last.season.playing.in.17.sets.and.tallying.13.kills,.while.Schirmer.should.add.depth.in.the.middle.for.the.‘Cats.

Setters:.New.Hampshire.is.“set”.in.the.middle.despite.losing.just.its.second.3,000-assist.performer.in.Kate.Uitti..Senior.tri-captain.Sara Heldman.(Greenwood,.Ind.).will.return.to.her.native.posi-tion.for.her.final.season..Heldman.is.no.stranger.to.setting.for.the.Wildcats..She.has.520.assists.of.her.own.despite.playing.all.of.2009.at.the.libero.position..Heldman.dished.out.342.assists. in.20.matches.as.a.sophomore..Waiting. in.the.wings. is.sophomore.setter.Jansan Falcusan.(Plymouth,.Mich.)..Falcusan,.who.served.as.Uitti’s.backup.in.2009,.saw.action.in.10.matches.and.13.sets.as.a.freshman..She.finished.her.first.season.in.Durham.with.76.assists.including.three.double-digit.performances..

Defensive Specialists:.The.Wildcat. defensive. efforts. will. be. led. by. senior. tri-captain. Jayde Huxtable. (St..Charles,. Ill.).. Huxtable. will. likely. take. over. the. libero. duties. with. Heldman. heading. back. to. the. setter. spot..Joining.Huxtable.on.defense.will.be.sophomore,.Jessie Schnepp. (East.Longmeadow,.Mass.)..Schnepp.saw.tremendous.growth.during.the.2009.season.as.well.as.in.the.spring.season.and.will.she.her.time.dramatically.increase.this.season.

Schedule:.The.Wildcats.open.their.2010.campaign.on.Friday,.Aug..27.at.the.Army.Tournament..UNH.will.play.St..John’s.as.well.as.the.host.Black.Knights.and.Fairleigh.Dickinson.University.during.the.opening.weekend.of.competition.in.West.Point,.N.Y..Next,.the.‘Cats.will.play.at.the.Harvard.Tournament.on.Sept..3-4.against.Boston.College,.Eastern.Illinois.and.Bryant.

The. Wildcats. open. their. home. slate. with. a. single. non-conference.match.against.Northeastern.University.on.Tuesday,.Sept..7.at.7.p.m..The.following.weekend,.UNH.will.travel.to.participate.in.the.URI.Tour-nament. and. will. play. the. host. Rams,. Marist. College. and. Maryland.

Eastern.Shore..New.Hampshire.will.return.home.to.host.the.third-annual.Holly.Young.Invitational.Sept..17-18.at.Lundholm.Gymnasium..The.Wildcats.welcome.in.in-state.foe.Dartmouth.College.as.well.as.Sacred.Heart.and.Rutgers..UNH.concludes.the.non-conference.play.with.a.single.match.at.UConn.on.Sept..24.

UNH.will.open.America.East.conference.play.on.Friday,.Oct..1.as.it.plays.host.to.Hartford.(7.p.m.).and.continues.at.home.with.Stony.Brook.on.Sunday,.Oct..3.(1.p.m.)..

The.Wildcats.hope.to.earn.a.spot.in.the.four-team.America.East.tournament.slated.for.Nov..19-20.at.the.site.of. the.highest.seed..This.off-season,.Providence.College.became.an.associate.member.of. the.America.East.conference.in.volleyball.

The.Wildcats.have.won.three.America.East.tournament.titles.(1998,.2002,.2003).and.three.NCAA.appearances.in.school.history,.all.which.have.come.under.Coach.Hirschinger..UNH.has.won.20+.matches.in.six.of.the.last.13.seasons,.including.a.school.record.24.wins.in.1998.and.1999..Hirschinger,.who.is.one.of.just.15.active.coaches.to.posted.600.career.highs.has.also.amassed.over.200.win.as.UNH.head.coach.

Jill.Hirschinger,.a.four-time.America.East.Coach.of.the.Year,.enters.her.15th.season.as.head.coach.of.the.University.of.New.Hampshire.volleyball.program,.marking.her.32nd.season.as.a.head.volleyball.coach..Hirschinger.was.named.the.head.coach.of.the.Wildcat.volleyball.program.in.the.spring.of.1996.by.former.athletic.director.Judy.Ray,.in.the.second.season. that. UNH. regained. its. varsity. status.. In. her. 15. years. at. UNH,. she. has. become. the.program’s.winningest.coach.and.the.first.to.surpass.the.200-win.milestone.as.she.currently.has.230.victories..Not.to.mention.she.has.guided.the.Wildcats.to.20-win.seasons.six.times.during.her. tenure. in.Durham..Hirschinger.earned.her.200th.career.win.at.UNH.when.the.team.captured.a.3-1.win.over.Southern.Methodist.University.in.the.deciding.match.of.the.UNH.Tournament.on.Sept..15,.2007.. Hirschinger.has.spent.the.past.32.seasons.as.a.head.coach.at.both.the.Division.I.and.II.levels..She.has.accumulated.an.impressive.639-444-10.overall.record,.owning.a..589.winning.percentage..Hirschinger’s.639.career-coaching.victories. rank.her.12th.on. the.all-time.active.NCAA.wins.list..She.reached.the.600.win.plateau.in.the.second-to-last.match.of.the.regular.season.in.2006.with.a.3-2.win.over.America.East.rival.Binghamton.on.Nov..11.at.Lundholm.Gym..She.also.coached.a.pair.of.All-American.honorable.mentions.(Aly.Coler.and.Beth.Cole).during.her.tenure.at.UNH.. Last.season.Hirschinger.took.a.young.Wildcat.team,.which.struggled.out.of.the.gate.

and.developed.a.formidable.team.that.rattled.off.wins.in.its.final.four,.and.five.of.the.last.six.regular.season.matches..The.‘Cats.surged.from.out.of.the.playoff.hunt.to.becoming.the.second.seed.in.the.tournament,.falling.to.eventual.champion.Binghamton.in.the.America.East.semifinals.. Hirschinger.won.the.2003.America.East.Coach.of.the.Year.after.guiding.the.program.to.its.second-straight.confer-ence.championship.with.a.23-12.overall.record.and.a.12-2.mark.in.conference.play..UNH.faced.No..1-.and.eventual.national.champion-.Southern.California.in.the.team’s.third.appearance.in.the.NCAA.Tournament.under.Coach.Hirschinger.. In.2002,.Hirschinger.guided.the.’Cats.to.a.23-11.overall.record.and.the.team.earned.its.second.America.East.title.in.school.history,.along.with.the.second.NCAA.Tournament.berth.in.UNH.history..The.Wildcats.fell.to.Big.Ten.champion.Minnesota.in.four.games,.becoming.the.first.team.in.America.East.to.win.a.game.in.the.NCAA.Tournament.since.the.NCAA.went.to.a.64-team.format.. In.1998,.Hirschinger.led.UNH.to.a.24-11.overall.record.with.a.perfect.14-0.mark.in.America.East.action..The.Wildcats.had.a.banner.season,.defeating.conference.rival.Hofstra.for.the.school’s.first-ever.America.East.championship.and.first.appear-ance.in.the.NCAA.Tournament.against.the.nationally.ranked.University.of.Arkansas..The.Wildcats.tallied.the.second-most.wins.in.school.history.with.24.(26.in.1980)..Hirschinger.also.earned.America.East.Coach.of.the.Year.for.the.second.year.in.a.row,.while.several.players.garnered.all-conference.awards..She.also.guided.the.‘Cats.to.a.school-record.14.consecutive.wins.in.1998.. Hirschinger.took.over.the.Wildcat.program.in.1996,.when.the.team.was.in.just.its.second.year.at.the.Division.I.var-sity.level.since.1984..She.led.the.young.team.to.a.6-26.overall.record,.which.included.victories.in.four.of.the.Wildcats’.final.six.matches.. Hirschinger.recorded.her.500th.career.coaching.victory.Oct..15,.2000.vs..Drexel.and.she.posted.her.100th.career.vic-tory.at.UNH.on.Nov..18,.2000.vs..Northeastern.in.the.America.East.semifinal.match.. She.was.appointed.to.the.17-member.AVCA.Board.of.Directors.in.May.of.2005..Hirschinger.also.serves.as.Chair.for.the.AVCA.All-America.committees..Hirschinger.will.serve.on.the.regional.ranking.advisory.committee.for.the.NCAA..She.served.three.years.as.the.Senior.Women’s.Administrator.in.UNH’s.Athletic.Department.from.2001-2004.. Before.coming.to.Durham,.Hirschinger.spent.the.previous.12.seasons.at.Ferris.State.University,.located.in.Big.Rapids,.Mich..Hirschinger.registered.11.winning.seasons.and.ended.her.stay.at.Ferris.as.the.winningest.coach.in.Bulldog.history.with.a.330-151.(.686).overall.record..She.led.FSU.to.seven.Division.II.postseason.playoff.appearances.and.recorded.a.milestone.400th.victory.in.that.span..Hirschinger.was.named.Great.Lakes.Intercollegiate.Athletic.Conference.Coach.of.the.Year.(GLIAC).on.four.occasions,.regional.Coach.of.the.Year.three.times,.and.led.the.Bulldogs.to.an.NCAA.Final.Four.appearance.in.1987.and.Elite.Eight.appearance.in.1989..She.also.coached.nine.All-Americans.and.two.academic.All-Americans.while.coaching.the.Bulldogs..Hirschinger.also.owns.the.NCAA.record.with.46.consecutive.wins,.while.at.FSU..In.addition.to.her.coaching.duties.at.Ferris.State,.Hirschinger.served.as.an.Assistant.Athletic.Director.and.was.in.charge.of.NCAA.compliance.at.the.school..She.was.a.member.of.the.NCAA.Division.II.national.volleyball.committee,.and.also.served.on.the.All-America.and.National.Golf.Committees..Hirsch-inger.was.inducted.into.the.FSU.Athletic.Hall.of.Fame.in.the.summer.of.2008.

Prior.to.her.arrival.at.Ferris.State,.Hirschinger.be-gan.her.collegiate.volleyball.coaching.career.at.Drake.University.in.Des.Moines,.Iowa..During.her.five-year.stint.at.Drake,.she.guided.the.NCAA.Division.I.program.to.two.appearances.at.the.U.S..Volleyball.Association’s.National.Tournament.and.an.Iowa.Division.I.state.title..She.compiled.a.79-90-10.(.469).re-cord.during.her.tenure.at.Drake.. . A.1979.graduate.of.Utah.State.University,.Hirschinger.compiled.an. impressive.athletic. re-sume.during.her.collegiate.career,.excelling.in.volleyball,.garnering.all-conference,.all-region.and.team.captain. recognition. while. helping. the. Aggies.claim. the. AIAW. Division. I. national. champion-ship. and. Collegiate. Classic. North. America. Cup.championship. in. 1978.. Hirschinger. was. also. a.standout.in.track.and.field,.qualifying.nationally.(1976-79).in.the.javelin.and.placing.10th.in.1977..She.received.her.Bachelor.of.Science.Degree.in.Physical. Education. at. Utah. State.. In. the. winter.of.2008,.Hirschinger.and.the.rest.of.the.1978.Na-tional. Championship. team. were. inducted. into.the.Utah.State.Athletic.Hall.of.Fame.

. Born.in.West.Allis,.Wis.,.Hirschinger.graduated.from.West.Allis.Central.High.School.and.attended.New.Mexico.State.University.for.one.year..A.two-sport.athlete.at.New.Mexico.State,.she.led.her.team.to.a.10th-place.finish.at.the.National.Volleyball.Championships.in.1975.

McLamb.started.as.coach.of.the.Radford.University.women’s.club.volleyball.team..He.was.also.instrumental.in.starting.the.men’s.club.team.at.Radford..Upon.graduation.from.Radford,.he.continued.his.coaching.as.head.coach.of.the.16.Gold.Team.of.the.Coastal.Virginia.Volleyball.Club..McLamb’s.team.finished.first.at.the.Monument.City.Classic.and.Omaha.Invitational.in.2007.and.placed.fourth.at.the.Northeast.Qualifier.in.2008..McLamb.left.Coastal.Virginia.in.2009.when.we.became.head.coach.of.the.Northern.Virginia.Volleyball.Association.Boys.16.Select.team..Under.his.direction.the.team.placed.third.at.the.Can-Am.National.Qualifier.and.the.Nittany.II.National.Qualifier,.receiving.a.bid.from.both.tournaments.. Marty.Scarano.is.in.the.midst.of.his.11th.year.as.Director.of.Athletics.at.the.University.of.New.Hampshire..During.his.tenure,.Scarano.has.heightened.national.exposure.for.UNH.athletics.with.academics,.facility.renovations.and.programmatic.advancement.being.top.priorities.. According.to.numbers.released.in.2010,.UNH.athletics.ranks.highest.in.the.America.East.Conference,.the.Colonial.Athletic.Association.and.second.nationally.among.all.public.institutions,.trailing.only.the.U.S..Naval.Academy,.for.the.Graduation.Success.Rate.(GSR).of.its.student.athletes.with.a.mark.of.97.percent..Of.its.20.current.sport.teams,.14.of.them.submitted.perfect.GSRs.of.100.percent.. UNH.finished.second.in.the.America.East.Academic.Cup.this.past.season,.achieving.a.3.16.cumulative.grade-point.average,.which.surpassed.the.league.record.for.highest.GPA..
