Waterjet Propulsion Systems

Page 2: Ultra Dynamics of ship

The UltraJet story began in the 1950s with the formation of Dowty Marine when the early Turbocraft jet boat was introduced. In those early days of innovation, Donald Campbell of speed record fame headed up the company, but manufacture of boats was eventually discontinued, leaving the waterjet range as a valuable addition to the Dowty product range, which was eventually sold off to become Ultra Dynamics Limited.

50 YEARS IN WATERJET PROPULSION

The company has been a highly successful innovator and has developed specialist markets for waterjet applications, being the major supplier to the military sector for amphibious vehicles. Both pod units and hull inserted waterjets have been engineered for this sector.

A strong presence has been developed with navies, coastguards and government agencies worldwide, supplying waterjets for pilot boats, rigid inflatables and offshore patrol vessels.

UltraJet Propulsion for High Thrust

High thrust waterjet propulsion for low to medium speed vessels used in bridging boats, towing and recovering, rescue. etc.

As a result of development in the military market and test boat programmes, UltraJets today, when comparing competitive jets size for size, provide higher thrust at low and medium speeds to allow fast and efficient acceleration to planing speeds as well as improved cruise speeds.

UltraJets’ exceptional thrust in the 0 to 20 knot range has been achieved without compromising the higher speed capability and provides an excellent alternative for both low speed displacement craft and high speed planing boats.

The U.S. Army/Marine Corp chose UltraJets because of the superior static thrust capability of the UltraJet 305, its light weight and because it provided a more

cost effective solution as competitors were being forced to use larger and more expensive waterjets to achieve the same static thrust.

Simply BetterUltraJet Propulsion for High Speed Craft

Waterjet propulsion for high-speed craft used for patrol, custom, port and harbour security, enforcement, pilot, search and rescue, etc. UltraJet propulsion systemsprovide sprint capability plus high thrust at low boat speed (for towing and recovery).

Page 10: Ultra Dynamics of ship

Pod Waterjets for Tracked and Wheeled Amphibious VehiclesMission-specific custom waterjet propulsion systems are designed in house. Pod waterjets for wheeled amphibious armoured fighting vehicles and personnel carriers provide the high thrust necessary for amphibious vehicles to maintain high swimming speeds and directional control when traversing flowing rivers and swimming from craft to beaches.

Waterjet Advantages

Successful Systems - Delivering Solutions

UltraJets not only provide high thrust, but also high speeds of over 40 knots.

UltraJets have been developed for the efficient propulsion of a wide range of workboats, SAR, fisheries protection, patrol and Customs, pollution control, rigid inflatables, small passenger, fast landing and leisure craft.

High Thrust and Rapid Acceleration

Suitable for both planing and displacement craft in single or multi-jet installations. Excellent low speed manoeuvrability due to vectored thrust. High thrust at low boat speeds, ideal for towing and recovery operations. High reversing thrust and rapid acceleration without cavitation for craft fitted with a well-matched waterjet.

Excellent Manoeuvrability

The ability to vector a jet pump thrust gives superior control of the craft across the complete speed range. Docking and holding station is much easier. The craft can easily rotate within its own length, or in the case of a twin jet installation can move bodily sideways. Changes in vessel speed and direction can be accomplished quickly. Waterjets can create side forces two to four times greater than boats equipped with propellers and rudders.

Shallow Water Operation

Craft fitted with waterjets can operate in very shallow water and tidal conditions and can be easily beached as the jet intake is flush with the hull bottom.

Ease of Installation - Compact Propulsion Package

UltraJets are supplied as factory tested, compact propulsion packages, with fully integrated control systems mounted on the jet and all cables supplied with durable waterproof connectors for “plug and play” installation.

Increased Efficiency and Fuel Economy

On craft operating above 25 knots the overall efficiency of an UltraJet installation is normally equal to, or better than a comparitive propeller installation. An UltraJet installation that is well matched to the engine and hull will allow the engines to be operated at optimum cruise throttle settings.

Low Drag

Absence of underwater appendages reduces hull resistance as well as risk of impact damage.

Page 12: Ultra Dynamics of ship

Waterjet Advantages

Improved Engine Life

Reduced long term wear and tear on the entire propulsion system. UltraJets are capable of absorbing full engine power regardless of boat speed and cannot overload the engine. A fixed pitch propeller by contrast can only absorb full power at one condition and tends to overspeed, or over torque at other conditions with the consequent loss of power and thrust. This can be very bad for the engine and seriously affect its life.

Total Safety

Greater safety for personnel in the water as the impeller is housed within a casing. UltraJets are ideal for diving and pilot operations, reduce injury or death to marine mammals, and cause less damage to delicate marine eco-systems. Using the reverse deflector the craft can be stopped in very short distances in emergencies.

Secondary Propulsion

UltraJets are an efficient solution for secondary propulsion and can add all the benefits in terms of manoeuvrability and fuel efficiency. UltraJets can also be used to boost acceleration and top speed.

Lower Vibration and Waterborne Noise Improves Onboard Comfort

Absence of vibration and torque effects improves comfort levels on-board, especially important for leisure craft. A smoother ride and less cracking and fatigue in hull superstructures.

Low Maintenance Costs & Easier Servicing

Integral corrosion and wear protection means routine maintenanceinvolving monitoring lubricant levels and checking for anode depletion. If operated in relatively clean water many years of service can be expected from the encased impeller. Revenue producing applications that need to be in service for 2000 hours or more per year benefit from lower operating costs. If required, servicing including impeller change can be carried out without hauling the boat, especially in tidal areas. Work can also be carried out on a beach or rack, that is exposed at low tide.

Minimum Damage Potential/Downtime

Reliability is a priority for working craft. There are no rotating under-water propellers to foul. A jet propelled boat will simply ride over floats and lines attached to lobster and crab pots. It will also ride over floating debris which can destroy a stern drive or propeller, meaning less time spent in drydock on repairs.

UltraJet Quality in DesignUltraJets are based on high efficiency axial flow pumps incorporating the latest computer generated impellertechnology. This gives our jets high propulsive coefficients with outstanding resistance to cavitation. Mounted partly inboard at the stern of a vessel UltraJets are supplied as complete compact propulsion packages, control systems are fitted on-jet and all cables have plug and play fittings for ease of installation.

Water is drawn through the intake which is mounted flush with the bottom of the hull. The impeller accelerates the water through the jet to the rear where it is discharged through the outlet nozzle, creating high forward thrust. A steering nozzle directs the flow to port or starboard as directed from the helm, giving maximum turning force.

The split duct reverse deflector redirects the water forward and underneath the boat giving powerful astern thrust. The control system enables positioning of the reverse deflector for “zero speed” and precise vessel control. Safe manoeuvres such as 360o on the spot rotation with a single jet and true sideways movement in multi-jet applications are achievable.

The intake-mounting block simplifies installation. This is fixed to the hull bottom and the UltraJet is then simply bolted to the block and driveline and control system connections made.

Proven ThrustUltraJets have proven they provide more static and mid-range thrust than any other waterjet on the market, when comparing jets size for size. Our jets excel where high bollard pull and exceptional acceleration is a craft requirement and boat speed must not be sacrificed to achieve this. This mid range thrust is also critical on heavily laden craft to ensure that the transition to planing speeds is reliably achieved and to provide fuel-efficient cruise speeds.

Attention to detail in design for installation, product life, maintenance and fail safe mode. Detail so well thought out, our most prestigious competitor has copied these features. Many of the detail design features have now been adopted by other jet manufacturers.

Flexible design philosophies and technological expertise, ensure that products are tailored to customers’ specific requirements. Efficient manufacturing procedures are geared to providing superior quality, prompt delivery and maximum in-service reliability.

Ultra Dynamics has Lloyds ISO 9001 quality registration and many other multi-national quality approvals.

Customer support is provided by Ultra companies and authorised distributors world-wide.

Today, Ultra’s range of waterjets represents 50 years of continuous research, development and product advancement.

Extensive use is made of computer technology in the design, application and performance assessment of each waterjet system.

Intelligent Control Systems

UltraJet waterjet control systems put you in total control and

allow you to confidently manoeuvre in any direction –

port/starboard, ahead/astern, diagonally, or rotate - with just

one hand.

The twin duct reverse deflector, in conjunction with the

adjustable steering nozzle, provides excellent low speed

manoeuvrability, especially when docking, in confined

harbours, difficult tide and wind conditions, and emergency/

rescue situations.

A range of steering and reverse control systems are

available, from the most simple system to intelligent

UltraJet joystick control system, providing the ultimate in

vessel manoeuvrability for single, twin and multi-jet systems.

The result of continuous innovation has seen the

introduction of the Jetronic intelligent joystick control

system and JetMaster Joystick, offering unparalleled

manoeuvring power. The PLC (Programmable Logical

Computer) has a specially developed digital network which

converts the joystick commands to boat movements,

harnessing the full benefits of the UltraJets.

The system can also interface with Autopilots.

Easy and logical to use even inexperienced boat users

can operate it, making close quarter manoeuvring simple.

One hand manoeuvring gives you total control of your

boat and the possibility to move in any direction. Docking has been made simple just by moving the joystick in the

direction you want the boat to move to.
