A Message from Chairman Dr. Jeffrey J. Eckardt:

Welcome to the 2012 AAOS UCLA/OH Alumni Reception. We have had a most successful year as we remain committed to patient care, emphasizing research while maintaining our commitment to education and community service. I am glad to report that in June 2011 the Department received word from the RRC (Residency Review Committee) that we received a 5-year accreditation without any citations. This was in large part due to the diligence of Connie Sams, our Medical Education Coordinator, and Drs. Jim Luck and Nelson SooHoo, our program directors, with help from Drs. Prosper Benhaim, Gerry Finerman and David McAllister. After many years of waiting, we have now moved into our offices, clinics and operating rooms within the new Santa Monica Hospital, officially known as the Santa Monica UCLA Medical Center and Orthopaedic Hospital. Our alliance with Orthopaedic Hospital remains steadfast as Orthopaedic Hospital celebrates their 100-year anniversary. Since June 2010 we have added eight new faculty members: Drs. Frank Petrigliano in the Division of Sports Medicine, Devon Jeffcoat and Eric Farrell in Trauma, Peter

Alexakis and Bruce Brown in General Orthopaedics and Jae Jung in PM&R. Drs. Michael Daubs in Spine and Susan Bukata in Oncology and Osteoporosis will be arriving in March 2012. We were also delighted to welcome our new R1 class that represents the best of the best applicants. Our Outpatient Ambulatory Surgical Center, with eight new operating rooms on 16th Street, is due to open by March 2012 in Santa Monica. This will bring us to a total of 16 inpatient ORs and 8 outpatient ORs for surgical procedures on the Santa Monica campus. We continue to have access to outpatient surgical rooms in Westwood for hand and sports cases, with the Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center being primarily used by Drs. Eric Johnson and Devon Jeffcoat for the major trauma cases. Our new outpatient Spine Center with Neurosurgery and PM&R at Wilshire and 12th Street in Santa Monica will hopefully be opened by this summer. Our newest challenge will be the implementation of the Electronic Medical Record System, a two-year process and an administrative challenge for all. All of our faculty, residents, and fellows have diligently been working with the implementation team for a smooth transition. Historical Notes Charles O. Bechtol, M.D.

1911-1998 Our Founding Division Chief

Charles O. Bechtol, M.D. (1911-1998) was the Founding Division Chief of Orthopaedic Surgery at UCLA. Dr. Bechtol received his M.D. from Stanford Medical School in 1940. From 1952-1957, he served as Chairman of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at Yale University where he established the Yale Biomechanics Laboratory. He joined the UCLA faculty in 1957 as Founding Division Chief of Orthopaedic Surgery and served in that capacity until 1970. Dr. Bechtol became internationally known for his research in biomechanics, designed multiple orthopaedic device systems and made major improvements in artificial limbs. Among the devices were a self tapping screw in the 1950s, the Bechtol Stepped Hip Replacement Stem in 1956, the Bechtol Straight Hip Stem with Trabecular Notches in the 1960s, the Bechtol Total Hip System in 1970, the Bechtol Total Knee System in 1972, the Bechtol Total Shoulder Replacement in 1974, and the Series II Total Hip System in 1976 among others. He served as member and chairman of research committees for the AAOS, ORS, National Science Foundation, California Medical Association and LA County Medical Association. In 1991, Dr. Bechtol received the Markowitz Award from the Academy of Surgical Research for a lifetime of outstanding contributions to medicine through experimental surgery. In 1970, he founded the Los Angeles-based Joint Implant Surgery & Research Foundation, which he chaired until his death on July 16, 1998 at the age of 86.He is survived by his wife, Louise, who graciously provided this biographical information. Dr. Bechtol set the bar for clinical care and translational bioengineering research. In 2010-2011, the UCLA/Orthopaedic Hospital Department of Orthopaedic Surgery continued its mission of providing outstanding clinical care, resident and fellow education, and research at the basic science, translational, and clinical levels. Our goal as a Department is to integrate clinical care, education, and research while maintaining the highest levels of patient satisfaction with cutting-edge surgical techniques. We are honored to be a part of the UCLA Health System, consistently ranked as “Best in the West” by the US News and World Report.

January 2012 marked the opening of the new Santa Monica UCLA/Orthopaedic Hospital, located on Wilshire and 16th Street in Santa Monica, CA.

This location will serve as the inpatient and outpatient hub of the UCLA/Orthopaedic Hospital Department of Orthopaedic Surgery for decades to come. Constructed as part of the alliance between UCLA Orthopaedic Surgery and Los Angeles Orthopaedic Hospital, this facility houses state of the art operating suites, inpatient facilities, faculty offices, and outpatient exam rooms. In addition, UCLA has signed a $147 million dollar 30 year lease

on a three-story ambulatory surgery center across

from the Santa Monica UCLA Medical Center slated to open in early 2012. Further, construction of a new UCLA Spine Center has commenced in conjunction with the Department of Neurosurgery, slated to open in 2012.

FACILITIES

The Los Angeles Orthopaedic Hospital has added and updated facilities to continue to provide world-class pediatric orthopaedic care both in the original downtown Los Angeles location and in Santa Monica. Led by Anthony Scaduto, M.D., interim President, Chief Executive Officer and Lowman Professor of Pediatric Orthopaedics, the Renee and Meyer Luskin Children’s Clinic moved into the new Santa Monica UCLA/Orthopaedic Hospital in January 2012 and will serve as the westside focal point of Pediatric Orthopaedics at UCLA. Also, over 95,000 children's orthopaedic visits are conducted at the 40,000-square-foot Orthopaedic Hospital Outpatient Medical Center on the downtown Los Angeles Orthopaedic Medical Center campus. In addition, we remain extremely proud of the Orthopaedic Hospital Medical Magnet High School. Opened as an alliance with Los Angeles Unified School District, this magnet high school emphasizes healthcare and medical science.

Despite the move of the majority of orthopaedic clinical work to the new Santa Monica facility, we still maintain a strong presence at the main Westwood UCLA campus. First, we provide Level 1 orthopaedic trauma care at the new Ronald

Reagan UCLA Medical Center which serves as the nucleus for our Orthopaedic Trauma resident education. Second, the UCLA/Orthopaedic Hospital Department of

Orthopaedic Surgery maintains the state-of-the-art 35,000 square foot Orthopaedic Hospital Research Center (OHRC).

Led by Vice Chair of Research John Adams, M.D., we harbor three goals for this facility and departmental research as a whole. The first is to become the foremost research department of orthopaedic surgery in the United States. Currently, we rank 8th among Orthopaedic Surgery departments nationally for NIH funding. The second is to build a leading training program in

regenerative-restorative orthopaedic medicine and train the next generation of leaders in the field. The third is to bring research advances to the care of children with musculoskeletal disease, a 100+ year-long mission of the Orthopaedic Hospital of Los Angeles. Third, the UCLA Division of Sports Medicine continues to provide care for over 700 UCLA intercollegiate athletes at the Acosta Athletic

Training Complex and, in addition, provides musculoskeletal care at the Arthur Ashe

Student Health and Wellness Center. Lastly, UCLA Orthopaedic Surgery will maintain a clinic and Sports Medicine Center on campus at Westwood. In the UCLA/Orthopaedic Hospital Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, we aim to provide a diverse residency experience and to provide care to the underserved as well. In 2011, we maintained our strong relationship with Harbor-UCLA Department of Orthopaedic Surgery but also added a new Orthopaedic Surgery service at the county hospital, Olive View Medical Center. This new service, led by Olive View Chief Nelson Soohoo, M.D., has been tremendously well received by residents, faculty, and patients alike. The orthopaedic service joins the already extremely busy hand service at Olive View and provides Level 2 orthopaedic trauma care and sports medicine in the North San Fernando Valley.

UCLA continues to pride itself on training some of the finest orthopaedic surgery residents in the country. Our goal is to train both future academic leaders and outstanding clinicians. Each year we are faced with the difficult task of choosing from the most outstanding applicants in the country in an increasingly competitive field. We are rewarded each year with bright young minds that provide outstanding care and strengthen our department. Led by Program Director James V. Luck, Jr., M.D. and Associate Program Director Nelson Soohoo, M.D., we currently train six residents per residency class. In addition, two residents per year choose to complete a prestigious one-year research fellowship between second and third years of residency. Our residents continue to rotate at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, Shriner’s Hospital Los Angeles, the West Los Angeles VA Hospital, and the aforementioned Orthopaedic Surgery Service at the Olive View Medical Center.

RESIDENT/FELLOW EDUCATION

In addition, we train two Pediatric Orthopaedic Surgery Fellows, two Orthopaedic Sports Medicine Fellows, two Hand Surgery Fellows, and two Spine Surgery Fellows per year. These trainees have completed their orthopaedic surgery residencies and have chosen to spend one year at UCLA for subspecialty training. The strength of our residency program is demonstrated by the outstanding fellowships garnered by UCLA graduates. Nelson SooHoo, M.D. is Division Chief of Foot and Ankle Surgery at UCLA. Dr. SooHoo is an outstanding clinician and researcher, having received grant support, awards, and national recognition for his outcomes research. Sports Medicine continues to be a strength at UCLA. The Division of Sports Medicine is comprised of six faculty members. Along with Head Team Physician and Emeritus Chair Gerald Finerman, M.D., the group is responsible for the care of over 700 UCLA intercollegiate athletes. This group of athletes has collectively won well over 100 NCAA national championships.

SPORTS MEDICINE

David McAllister, M.D., a leader in the field of Sports Medicine and Knee Surgery, is Division Chief of the Sports Medicine service. He serves on the Board of Directors for AOSSM and the AOSSM Membership Committee, Traveling Fellowship Committee, and Abstract Review Committee. Dr. McAllister is the co-chair

of the AAOS/AOSSM annual Sports Medicine Board Review Course in Chicago, IL. Dr. McAllister was a Visiting Professor at the 14th Brazilian Congress of Knee Surgery in Praia do Forte, Bahia State, Brazil, March 29-31, 2011. He was also a Visiting Professor at the DMC Detroit Sports Medicine Institute in June 2011and the Sociedad Colombiana de Cirugía Ortopédica y Traumatología (SCCOT) in Cartagena, Colombia, in May 2011. Dr. McAllister was an invited Guest speaker on PCL reconstruction in elite athletes at the Major League Soccer Team Physicians Meeting in January 2012, Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Dr. McAllister received a VA Shared Equipment Evaluation Program grant for $48,000 and was co-investigator on two funded NIH grants: John Adams, M.D. (P.I.), “Regenerative Musculoskeletal Medicine” and Rick Wright, M.D. (P.I.), “Revision ACL Reconstructions: A Comparative Effectiveness Treatment Study.” Sharon Hame, M.D.is an associate clinical professor of orthopaedic surgery with a subspecialty in Sports Medicine. Dr. Hame has expertise in all areas of sports medicine including the anterior cruciate ligament, posterior cruciate ligament, meniscus injury, shoulder rotator cuff tears and labral tears. Most recently, Dr. Hame has become a leader in the diagnosis and treatment of hip disorders including hip labral tears and femoro-acetabular impingement (FAI).Dr. Hame has become a national leader both in sports medicine and as a woman orthopaedic surgeon. She was recently named one of the top 70 female orthopaedic surgeons in the country by Becker’s Orthopedic, Spine and Pain Management Review. She has served as the President of the Ruth Jackson Orthopaedic Society and has held committee positions in the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) and the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM). Currently she serves on the research committee and research awards and grants subcommittee for the AOSSM. At UCLA she serves on the Risk Management Committee and is the APCA representative for the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery.Dr. Hame is involved in clinical research and has over 30 publications and 50 national presentations. Dr. Hame works closely with the UCLA Athletic Department caring for the athletes at UCLA. She is an assistant team physician for the UCLA Football Team and is the team physician for UCLA Women’s Volleyball and Basketball teams. However, given her unique expertise in hip arthroscopy she

continues to evaluate and treat members from all 23 of UCLA’s Division 1 sports teams. This year she travelled to the NCAA Women’s Volleyball National Championships in San Antonio TX and helped UCLA bring home its 108th National Championship! Robert Pedowitz, M.D., Ph.D. is a Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at UCLA. He is on the editorial boards of the Arthroscopy Journal and

Sports Medicine & Arthroscopy Review. He serves on the Board of Directors for the Arthroscopy Association of North America (AANA), and currently chairs the Surgical Simulation Project Teams for AANA and AAOS.

Seth Gamradt, M.D. joined the UCLA faculty in 2007 after completing a sports medicine and shoulder fellowship at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York. Dr. Gamradt has a special interest in complex arthroscopic and open shoulder surgery. In April/May 2011, Dr. Gamradt traveled to Mexico and six cities in South America as an American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine Traveling Fellow and made 9 international

presentations regarding revision shoulder and knee surgery. He serves as one of the team physicians for United States Women’s Soccer and will be serving as a Team Physician for the U-17 Women’s National Team in 2012. Dr. Gamradt is on the editorial board of the journal Techniques in

Dr. Gamradt was an invited guest speaker on Ulnar Collateral Ligament Reconstruction at the Kaiser Permanente Upper Extremity Symposium, in Mammoth Lakes, CA, April 2011 and at the Kaiser Permanente Winter Symposium, Beaver Creek, CO, February 2011. Frank Petrigliano, M.D. joined the sports medicine faculty in 2010 after completing his fellowship at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York. Dr. Petrigliano has already garnered a $100,000 Young Investigator Award research grant from the Musculoskeletal Transplant Foundation for “A Bioengineered Biphasic Scaffold for Ligament Replacement.” He also received the Academic Senate Faculty Research Grant for “A novel non-invasive device for quantification of the pivot shift test.” Dr. Petrigliano has been instrumental in developing the Olive View Medical Center orthopaedic surgery service and also performs complex shoulder surgery and reconstruction at the West LA VA Medical Center. Dr. Petrigliano also recently received a Career Development Award from OREF to study the rotator cuff in an animal model. Prosper Benhaim, M.D. is Division Chief of Hand Surgery at UCLA. Dr. Benhaim is a hand surgeon, microsurgeon and reconstructive plastic surgeon at the UCLA School of Medicine and joined the

Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and the Division of Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery in 1998. He is currently an associate professor and Chief of Hand Surgery at UCLA and Olive View-UCLA Medical Centers. He has numerous local and national committee positions, including

an editorial position for the Journal of the American Society for Surgery of the Hand. Dr. Benhaim remains very active in research on Dupuytren's disease, stem cells, and in the clinical practice of hand surgery and reconstructive plastic surgery.

HAND SURGERY

Kodi Azari, M.D. came to UCLA from the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. Dr. Azari has been involved in both clinical and laboratory research for over 18 years and is the author of numerous

research articles, book chapters, and presentations. He lectures extensively both nationally and internationally on hand surgery as well as plastic surgery. Dr. Azari is the surgical director of the newly established UCLA Hand Transplant Program. In

2011, he led a team of Surgeons at Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center that performed the first hand transplant in the western United States in an operation that lasted 14-1/2 hours and concluded on Saturday, March 5.

The transplant was performed on a 26-year-old woman from northern California who lost her right hand in a traffic accident nearly five years ago. UCLA is only the fourth center in the nation to offer this procedure, and the first west of the Rockies. It was the 13th hand transplant surgery performed in the United States. Dr. Azari has been one of the lead surgeons on seven hand transplantation operations including the first double hand

Our outstanding primary care sports medicine team is headed by Division Chief John DiFiori, M.D. Dr. DiFiori is the Chief of the Division of Sports Medicine in the Department of Family Medicine and serves as Co-Director for the Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship Program at UCLA (three fellows per year). He is a Team Physician for UCLA Department of Intercollegiate Athletics. Dr. DiFiori continues to be active in many national leadership roles. He was recently elected to serve on the Executive Board of Directors for the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine. He was also appointed to the Scientific Advisory Board for the National Youth Sports Health and Safety Institute. the Athlete. He is also a Co-Director for the UCLA Musculoskeletal Ultrasound Course. Dr. DiFiori is an Associate Editor for the Clinical Journal of Sports Medicine and is a section editor for joint conditions for Current Sports Medicine Reports. Aurelia Nattiv, M.D. serves as Director of the UCLA Osteoporosis Center. Her areas of research include assessment of bone health in young athletes with amenorrhea, disordered eating and stress fractures, as well as risk taking behaviors in athletes. Dr. Nattiv is a team physician at UCLA and USA Track and Field, and is the medical representative for the USA Gymnastics National Health Care Advisory Board. Heather Gillespie, M.D., M.P.H. joined the faculty

in 2007after completing her fellowship training at Maine Medical Center in Portland, Maine. She is a team physician for the UCLA Department of Intercollegiate Athletics and has a sports medicine practice at Santa Monica-UCLA. Additionally, she

runs a pediatric sports medicine specialty clinic at Orthopaedic Hospital. been on faculty since then specializing in joint replacement and tumor surgery. Dr. Cyran’s teaching evaluations from the residents are consistently among the highest in the group and he recently was awarded a prestigious teaching award from the UCLA residents. James V. Luck, Jr., M.D. is a senior faculty member in Joint Replacement and one of the world leaders in research and treatment of hemophilic arthropathy. Dr. Luck is Former President and Chief Executive Officer, Los Angeles Orthopaedic Hospital. He is also President and Director of the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery, Inc. (ABOS). He does an outstanding job as program director for our highly sought after residency program.

Eric Johnson, M.D., a world expert in orthopaedic traumatology and fracture surgery, is Division Chief of the UCLA Orthopaedic Trauma service. He serves as a Member of the Board of Directors of the AO Foundation and was awarded an Honorary Fellowship in the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, July 13, 2009, Dublin, Ireland. In

2011, Dr. Johnson gave an impressive array of national and international presentations.

ORTHOPAEDIC TRAUMATOLOGY

First, Dr. Johnson was the Guest of Honor in Paris, France at the 23rd at the Letournel Pelvic and Acetabular Fracture Course, Paris, France, in September 2011, giving the Keynote Lecture: 30 Years of Acetabular Fracture Surgery. Second, Dr. Johnson traveled to Ireland in November 2011 to give four lectures at the 10th Current Controversies in Trauma Management, Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, Dublin, Ireland. Third, Dr. Johnson continues to travel, lecture, and teach as part of his

commitment to the AO Foundation, traveling to Sun Valley, Idaho and Puerto Rico in 2011. Devon Jeffcoat, M.D. joined the faculty at UCLA in 2010 after completing his fellowship at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York under the tutelage of Dr. David Helfet. Dr. Jeffcoat volunteered his time during the earthquake crisis in Haiti. He has already developed a busy trauma surgery practice in his first year of practice. Eric D. Farrell, M.D. has recently joined the UCLA orthopaedic trauma staff in August of 2011. He previously spent almost 6.5 years as Assistant Director of Orthopaedic Trauma at Cooper University Hospital in Camden N.J. His training consists of a trauma fellowship at Haborview Medical Center in Seattle, Washington; AO Fellowship in Salzburg Austria and an Ilizarov Fellowship in Lecco, Italy. He has a particular interest in nonunions and deformity correction.

MUSCULOSKELETAL ONCOLOGY Chair Jeffrey Eckardt, M.D., world expert in limb salvage surgery, endoprosthetic reconstruction, and musculoskeletal tumor surgery, heads our Division of Musculoskeletal Oncology. SPINE SURGERY

Jeffrey C. Wang, M.D. is the Division Chief of Orthopaedic Spine Surgery and an exceptional academic orthopaedic surgeon. He maintains a high-volume clinical practice while conducting a tremendous amount of both basic science and

clinical spine research. He is recognized as one of the important leaders in spine surgery in our country. Dr. Wang was the program chair of the Cervical Spine Research Society Meeting for 2011. He was selected as Program Chair of the North American Spine Society meeting for 2012, the only person in history to be selected twice (2005). Dr. Wang was on the Board of Directors for the Cervical Spine Research Society for 2011 and is on the Board of Directors for the California Orthopaedic Association. He is also on the Board of Directors for the North American Spine Society, and was elected as Education Council Director starting in 2011. Dr. Wang was also just elected as the Chair

of AOSpine International. His three-year term as the Chair of all AOSpine globally starts in 2012. He also was the sole editor of the North American Spine Society’s Advanced Reconstruction Spine Textbook published by the AAOS in 2011.

contributor to both basic science and clinical spine research as noted below. Arya (Nick) Shamie, M.D. is an attending spine surgeon at UCLA. He was elected for a second

term as President, American College of Spine Surgery. He serves as Medical Director for Vertiflex Spine and is overseeing an IDE Trial for percutaneous

interspinous device for lumbar stenosis. He was named on the Becker’s list of "10 Spine Surgeon Leaders of Academic Medical Centers to Know.”

Daniel Lu, M.D., Ph.D. is a surgeon-scientist who has recently joined the Departments of

Neurosurgery and Orthopaedic Surgery. He employs minimally invasive surgical techniques in the treatment of spinal disorders in the operating room. As a principal investigator in the Orthopaedic Hospital Research

Center, he is elucidating the molecular mechanisms and potential therapeutic treatments for spinal degeneration. Additionally, in the field of spinal cord injury, he is investigating the interneuronal spinal cord circuitry in hopes of improving the spinal cord function after injury. He currently is conducting 4 clinical trials in this effort. Division Chief Bruce Brown, M.D., specialist in joint replacement and general orthopaedics, leads a group of three generalists on staff: S. Andrew Schwartz, M.D. and Peter Alexakis, M.D. With the addition of these excellent faculty members, we have greatly improved the access and community service aspects of our group while streamlining surgical referrals. Dr. Schwartz also serves as director of medical student education. Steven Zeitzew, M.D. (West LA VA) was selected as one of the Fellows for the Institute for Science in Medicine. S. Andrew Schwartz, M.D., F.A.C.S. has been working on the Medical School Orthopaedic Education and has been helping to rewrite the Musculoskeletal block, both for the anatomy section as well as the lectures. He has received the Outstanding Tutor Award for each of the past 2 years and well as Teaching Humanism Award which included a $2500honorarium. He is also happy to announce that the final payment has been received which completes the $5,000,000grant he obtained from the Lincy Foundation for the Orthopaedic

Department. The grant was secured to help in all aspects of the department, especially in student education and special research projects.

GENERAL ORTHOPAEDIC SURGERY

The UCLA Metabolic Bone Disease and Osteoporosis Center, headed by Division Chief Aurelia Nattiv, M.D. and also including John Adams, M.D., Deborah Kado, M.D., and Benjamin Bengs, M.D. provides comprehensive service for

patients with osteoporosis including diagnosis and treatment. These physicians work closely with a

variety of health professionals, beginning with the patient’s own referring physician. When referring patients to the center, physicians can request only a DXA for accurate assessment of bone health or refer patients for complete evaluation and consultation with UCLA’s team of experts for interpretation of test results and recommendations for fracture prevention. Center physicians work closely with other health professionals at UCLA to offer patients a full spectrum of health expertise. This includes physical therapists who specialize in balance and fall prevention, occupational therapists who help patients with the activities of daily life, and dieticians who provide guidance in nutrition.

OSTEOPOROSIS/METABOLIC BONE DISEASE

Deborah Kado, M.D., M.S., clinician scientist, internist and geriatrician, joined the Orthopaedic Surgery faculty in 2008 from the UCLA Department of Medicine. Clinically, she sees patients in the UCLA Osteoporosis Center. Her research expertise is in osteoporosis and spinal changes with aging. In 2011, she was awarded a new $1 million NIH/NIAMS RO1 four year grant to study the biological and structural predictors of kyphosis progression in over 3,000 older men from six clinical centers across the United States. Drs. Karen Lyons & John Adams secured the first ever NIH postdoctoral training grant for the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery. It is one of the eleven funded training grants in Orthopaedic Surgery in the country and the only one on the West Coast. The first two trainees were recently

appointed (see picture). The total award is for $1.9M, supports four trainees per year, and runs through July 31, 2016. Jia Jiang and Michael

Weinstein are our first awardees.

ORTHOPAEDIC RESEARCH Highlights from the Orthopaedic Hospital Research Center: Our Orthopaedic Surgery Department boasts a tremendous array of non-clinical faculty that contribute a great deal to our academic output as a group. Led by Division Chief and Vice Chair of Research John Adams, M.D., our research center boasts over 30,000 square feet of research space. Recently, Dr. Adams was part of a successful team obtaining a $5 million grant in tissue engineering.

The initial NIH-supported Clinical and Translational Science Award was made to UCLA and its partners, Cedars-Sinai, Harbor-UCLA and King-Drew Medical Centers in June of 2011 (see logo); it generates $16.4M per year in support of clinical and translational research at UCLA. Dr. John Adams is the Associate Director. The Third Edition of the two-volume text Vitamin D was published in 2011. It is considered the definitive text in

the field. Dr. John Adams is one of the three editors. The Orthopaedic Hospital Research Center (OHRC; pictured) hosted its 4th annual research retreat on November 19, 2011. The theme of the retreat was “Advances in Translational Orthopaedic Research.” Faculty, fellows, and residents of the Department were joined by Dr. Randy Rosier (University of Rochester) and Dr. Tom Clemens (Johns Hopkins University), members of our External Advisory Board, as well as representatives from Amgen and the Executive Committee for Research of the Board of the Orthopaedic Hospital. Dr. Gerald Finerman was recognized in appreciation for his vision and role in creation of the OHRC. The J. Vernon Luck Sr. M.D. Orthopaedic Research Center at Orthopaedic Hospital has a goal to

develop a deeper understanding of the biology and biomechanics of the musculoskeletal system, and to apply this knowledge to the improvement of orthopaedic implants and the treatment of musculoskeletal injuries, including the associated surgical instrumentation and techniques, thereby improving the quality of care to orthopaedic patients world-wide. To accomplish this goal, the Luck Center investigators welcome and, indeed, depend on close collaboration with the clinical faculty, fellows, and residents in identifying appropriate targets for research and development that will have immediate and substantial impact on their ability

to treat patients effectively. The value of this collaborative approach is evident from the many journal publications and award papers from the Luck Center that include clinicians and basic science faculty as co-authors. Implant Tribology Laboratory The faculty of the Tribology lab includes Harry McKellop, Ph.D. as director, Zhen Lu, Ph.D. as lab manager, and Fu-Wen Shen, Ph.D. as materials scientist. For the past twenty years, a key program of the Tribology lab has been the development and ongoing improvement of highly wear-resistant crosslinked polyethylenes for hip and knee arthroplasty. Since clinical use began in 1998, several hundred thousand hips and knees using crosslinked polys from the Luck Center have been implanted. To date, none have required replacement due to clinically significant osteolysis. During the past year, Drs. McKellop and Shen were awarded several additional US and international patents for improvements in the crosslinked polyethylene. Biomaterials, Ions and Particle Analysis Laboratory In 2011, this research team, led by Fabrizio Billi, Ph.D., and Paul Benya, Ph.D., received the John Charnley Award from the Hip Society for their development of a new method to isolate and characterize wear particles from joint replacements, which has enabled several important new lines of research. The group is developing an animal model to evaluate the biological effects of nano-sized wear particles on osteolysis. Another project will identify the specific TCR-cognate antigens that are responsible for T-cell mediated response in patients with hip replacements. Both studies will eventually lead to the development of pharmacological approaches to minimize the adverse local and systemic reactions to all types of wear particles and ions.

A project being developed with Dr.Luck will monitor the level of ions and particles in blood serum and joint fluids from patients with metal-on-metal hip replacements, with the goal of identifying why severe tissue reactions occur in some patients. Another project with Dr.Pedowitz is studying the effect of metal particles on chondrolysis. Collaboration with Drs. Lloyd Miller and Nick Bernthal is directed at minimizing the occurrence of implant-related infections, and Drs. Niska, Miller, and Billi are developing an animal model to study the effect of wear nanoparticles on the propagation of bacterial infections. Finally, a study with Maria-Grazia Ascenzi, Ph.D. on bone architecture was recently published in the Journal of Biomedical Materials Research. Implant Retrieval Laboratory The faculty of the Implant Retrieval lab includes Patricia Hosseinian-Campbell, Ph.D., director, and Sang-Hyun Park, Ph.D., manager of the ASR metal-metal retrieval project. In 2011, the Implant Retrieval lab was awarded a competitive, multi-year contract to provide detailed analysis of all of the ASR metal-metal hip prostheses that are retrieved in the US – in close collaboration with the London Implant Retrieval Center at the Imperial College, which will analyze ASRs recovered outside the US. In 2006, Dr. Campbell led an international team that received the John Charnley Award from the Hip Society for their study of the causes of failure of metal-metal hip surface replacements, and she is a member of another international team that will receive the Hip Society’s 2012 Otto Aufranc Award for their study of "The Interpretation of Metal Ion Levels in Unilateral and Bilateral Hip Resurfacing." In collaboration with Koen De Smet, M.D., and Catherine Van Der Straeten, M.D., Dr. Campbell has just completed a textbook on the techniques of hip resurfacing that will be published by Woodhead in 2012.

Implant Biomechanics Laboratory The faculty of the Implant Biomechanics Laboratory includes Edward Ebramzadeh, Ph.D., director, and Sophia Sangiorgio, Ph.D., lab manager. Dr. Sangiorgio has been a member of the J. Vernon Luck Research Center at Orthopaedic Hospital since 2000, and faculty in the UCLA Department of Orthopaedics since 2007, after receiving her Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering from UCLA in 2006. Dr. Ebramzadeh has been a member of the J. Vernon Luck Research Center at Orthopaedic Hospital in the Implant Biomechanics Laboratory since 1982. He joined the UCLA faculty in 1998. He has been awarded the John Charnley Award by the Hip Society twice over the last decade for his work in total hip replacement research, most recently in 2011. The focus of the lab’s research is to evaluate existing and prototype implants and the associated surgical techniques, in order to improve their function and avoid clinical failures. Historically, much of the research focused on the optimization of the design of hip and knee prostheses. During the past few years, the scope of the research has been substantially expanded to include spinal and pediatric devices and procedures. Current clinical collaborators include Drs. BIOMECHANICS, of which Maria-Grazia Ascenzi, Ph.D. was guest editor, featured papers presented at the April 2010 interdisciplinary workshop Bone Tissue: Hierarchical Simulations for Clinical Applications, held at UCLA in our Department with co-sponsorship of UCLA’s Institute of Pure and Applied Mathematics and the Dean’s Office of Continuous Medical Education. Contributions authored by Department members addressed spine disorders (Drs. Jeff Wang, Jeremy Reid, and Jared Johnson), bone-implant interface (Drs. Sophia Sangiorgio and Edward Ebramzadeh), and cancellous structure in osteoporosis (Drs. Maria-Grazia Ascenzi and Aurelia Nattiv). In furtherance of the interdisciplinary exploration of bone structure that probes the factors that reduce bone quality and heighten the risk of fracture, Dr. Ascenzi’s research uses novel techniques of micro-dissection, innovative applications of imaging technologies, and multi-scale finite element modeling to create realistic virtual bone. In the last year the Vitamin D Group, headed by Martin Hewison, Ph.D., had published 13 papers (including 7 reviews and a Commentary), with a further manuscript in press. Prominent in this work was a FASEB Journal paper demonstrating a link between vitamin D and the mTOR signaling pathway in bone forming osteoblastic cells. Dr. Hewison has also published 2 book chapters. Work by the Hewison group has been presented at many meetings. Dr. Hewison was an invited speaker at 11 national and international meetings, presenting plenary and seminar talks on various aspects of vitamin D function. This included two presentations at the ASBMR meeting in San Diego and a further talk at the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America’s Pediatric Bone Meeting in New York. Lloyd S. Miller, M.D., Ph.D., is a member of the orthopaedic surgery research faculty who studies the pathogenesis and novel therapeutic strategies to combat infections associated with orthopaedic implants and prostheses. Dr. Miller’s research utilizes state-of-the-art imaging technology to monitor these infections in real-time. His work has been highly regarded among the orthopaedic surgery scientific community as his research was awarded the Lloyd Taylor Western Orthopaedic Association Award and the Longmire Surgical

A Message from Alumni Director, Seth C. Gamradt, M.D.: Welcome to the 2012 AAOS UCLA/Orthopaedic Hospital Alumni Reception. I have put together this alumni bulletin with great pride in 2012. We have an outstanding group of faculty, researchers, and residents and their achievements deserve to be recognized and collected each year. It is my intention for this bulletin to serve as a template for a Departmental Annual Report in the future and to formalize and strengthen the UCLA Alumni Association.

Having graduated from UCLA Orthopaedic Surgery residency in 2006, I am honored to be among such a distinguished and accomplished group of alumni. Moving forward my goal is to engage alumni and connect peers. The UCLA Alumni Association should serve as a network for career opportunities, referrals, collaboration, and collegiality.
